empiricism Essay
Empiricism
Empiricism by nature is the belief that there is no knowledge without experience. How can one know
what something tastes like if they have never tasted it? For example, would someone know that an
apple is red if they have never actually have seen one. Someone can tell you an apple is red, but, if
you never have seen one, can you really be sure?
Empiricists use three anchor points in which they derive their opinions from. The first of these points
is; the only source of genuine knowledge is sense experience. An easier way to understand this is to
compare the mind to a clean sponge. As the sponge touches things, it takes with it, a piece of
everything it touches. Without this, the sponge would remain clean and be void of anything ... Show

Another of the classic empiricists is George Berkeley (1685 1753), who believes that knowledge is
possible. He believed that it was only through experience and not reason that we have knowledge of
reality (p.99). The best way to describe what Berkeley was trying to say would be found in what we
call today idealism. Idealism by definition is a position that maintains that ultimate reality is mental or
spiritual in nature. He believed that reality is made up in many individual minds rather than one
cosmic mind. Hence, when Berkeley says that we have an idea of something he is not necessarily
referring to a particular concept but to the experience of our memory of the combined ideas.
The third empiricist is David Hume (1711 1776) and he does not answer this question as easily as the
first two have. He believes that knowledge is possible but is limited by what we cannot know about
the world outside of our own experience. Since we can only know the contents of our individual
minds, knowledge would and can be different for each person. Hume believes that sensory data is key
for any individual in order to know something is real. For example, if two people were sitting together,
one possessing the ability to see and hear and the other does not, could the one the latter really know
that a car drove by and that fact that it was red? Examples like this one are why Hume

Passenger Pigeons In America
Passenger Pigeon The world has experienced many mass extinctions within its lifetime. More and
more are occuring today with the help of homo sapiens. Everyone in the modern age has heard of the
most recent extinction of the white rhino, that was hunted for their prized horns. However, not many
have heard of the passenger pigeons claim to fame. There was an overabundance of them in the United
States, particularly in eastern North America. Passenger pigeons had been in America before the
Europeans dropped by and the United States was not even an idea yet. Following the colonization of
America was the deconstruction of the passenger pigeon s habitat and then eventually pigeons
attacking the crops belonging to the farmers for provisions. They would fly in gargantuan flocks that

With the new developments in human technology throughout the years, like the train, hunting these
animals became easier to accomplish. Hunters would travel from all over the US and Canada to get a
piece of the creatures with the delectable meat. Nevertheless, this species might have been able to
survive the slaughter of man if it were not for the fact that these hunters disrupted their breeding and
nesting grounds. In 1900, Republican Congressman John F. Lacey of Iowa introduced the nation s first
wildlife protection law, which banned the interstate shipping of unlawfully killed game. That year
Congress passed the Lacey Act, followed by the tougher Weeks McLean Act in 1913 and, five years
later, the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, which protected not just birds but also their eggs, nests, and
feathers. However it was too late for the passenger pigeons, all the flocks were dying out and only
Martha, a 29 year old pigeon in the Cincinnati zoo remained. That was of course until 1914 when she
passed, ending the

Hector Berlioz, My Favorite Composer
Hector Berlioz, my favorite composer, (born December 11, 1803ㅡdied March 8, 1869) is deemed one
of the greatest who, ...[contributed] to the modern orchestra with his Treatise on Information. His
mental state and life shaped a composer who had such a raw, creative sound that is reflected
prominently in his works, such as Symphonie fantastique and La Damnation de Faust.
During the age of where he was to attend school, France was at war and as a result he had to be taught
by his father who first introduced the young boy to music, which I think was the moment he sparked
an interest in music. By the age of twelve he was composing for large chamber groups where he was
taught to play the flute and guitar. As every father has dreams for their kids, he sent Berlioz off to
Paris to study medicine where he obtained his first degree in science. With the love of music in his
heart, he forced his acceptance to where he would be a pupil of Jean François Lesueur, professor at
Paris Conservatoire.
Having Manic Depressive illness, or bipolar disorder, is probably the reason he was so creative in his
works which is exemplified in Symphonie fantastique. In 1826, he was enrolled into Paris
Conservatoire, and a year after ... [he was] inspired to write Symphonie fantastique, a piece that broke

Outline And Explain Abrahams Behaviour Using 2 Different...
Abrahams Problem Abraham has a problem with alcohol. He started drinking his father s whiskey
when he was 12 and had difficulties attending school. Abraham s family all like to have a drink and at
family parties they tend drink to excess. Abraham says that drinking makes him feel like a big man ,
without a drink Abraham is quiet and unhappy. Abraham is unemployed and he spends most of his
benefits money on cheap alcohol. The aim of this study is to outline and explain Abrahams behaviour
using 2 different psychological Psychodynamic Approach The first thing to look at is that Abraham
has a problem with drinking, this problem can be explained with the fixation on a certain stage of
childhood development. According to Freud growing up we go through certain stages of development
he named psychosexual because they all represent certain erogenous zones of the body these are oral,
anal, phallic, latent and genital (Catatan ku, seorang doktor 2011). We are said to go through these
stages from birth all the way to adulthood, at different ages we gratify these different sexual areas with
different stimulation (breast feeding, expulsion of faeces, etc.) Abraham should be in the genital stage
that effects a child from puberty onwards, he should show heterosexual interest in people of a similar
age and have the ability to form mature relationships assuming he has successfully transitioned
through each stage. Failure to transition a stage would result in what is called a fixation

The Architecture in Melbourne
The architecture in Melbourne is characterised by a substantial juxtaposition of old and new
architecture. Where there are old architectural buildings that are an icon of Melbourne, there are also
more recent buildings that have built a reputation of a Melbourne Icon. These more recent icons are
known as The Melbourne Museum and Federation Square.
Both the Melbourne Museum and Federation Square started off as a competition for architects to
design the new building, whoever came up with the best concept/design would be the designer of the
building or space. The Melbourne Museum competition was announced in 1994 where it was also
opened for architects to design. The same chance for architects was given to design a new civic square
, known as Federation Square we see today. The Victorian Government held this competition in 1996
and was announced to be an international competition. With the Centenary of Federation celebrations
coming up in 2001, the main idea of the design was to generate a cultural space in the Melbourne
CBD. The designs and the final plans for the Melbourne Museum were presented in May 1995, where
Denton Corker Marshall (DCM) Architects won the competition. Lab Architects, which was based in
London at that time, was to partner up with Bates Smart to design this new cultural space, where Bates
Smart was considered to be one of the most prominent architecture firms in Melbourne. Federation
Square began construction in 1998. These two buildings/spaces were

Irony In Shirley Jackson s The Lottery

October 10, 2017
Formal Essay I
The Many Instances of Irony in The Lottery In Shirley Jackson s short story The Lottery, she uses
many examples of irony. Irony is the use of words that are the opposite of their usual meaning or what
is expected to happen. The use of irony plays an important role in delivering Jackson s sarcasm. The
author holds our attention all throughout the story and builds our suspense by using irony with the
characters and events that take place. Some instances of irony that she uses during the story to hold
our attention are: The title, the weather, the stones, the lunch and even some of the characters. The
very first use of irony starts with the title The Lottery. When the ... Show more content on

73) The villagers act as if the lottery is something that happens every day. They finish with the lottery
and then continue doing their daily chores. They act like nothing can stop them from doing their daily
activities. Not even murdering somebody! Some of the villagers want to hurry up and finish the lottery
so that they can go home and eat lunch. They pay no mind that they are eating lunch with blood on
their hands. The sentence Although the villagers had forgotten the ritual and lost the original black
box, they still remembered to use stones. (par. 74) shows that the villagers didn t care about the box or
the ritual, but they did care about the tool that would be used to kill somebody. The author is trying to
tell that the villagers didn t find pleasure in the ritual, but they did find pleasure in using the rock.
Although the villagers find the ritual to be long and boring, they find pleasure in using the rocks to
murder one of their family members or friends. The villagers find pleasure to be more important than
the ritual itself. Mrs. Hutchinson is washing dishes whenever she realizes what day and time it is.
After she realizes what day it is, she hurriedly runs to where the ritual is taking place. As she is on her
way to the ritual she doesn t stop to dry her hands, and this suggest that she s in a huge rush. Why is
she in such a hurry to get to a place where such a horrible thing is fixing to happen? Once she arrives
at the ritual she is chatting

Jeff Koons Analysis
Jeff Koons s Easyfun Ethereal series is a collection of seven paintings commissioned for the Deutsche
Guggenheim museum in Berlin and now on view at Gagosian gallery. The collection of paintings later
evolved into twenty four distinctive paintings. Koons utilized many images from magazines,
combined with his compelling backgrounds and varying curves. His paintings includes everyday
objects, female clothing, and many desserts to communicate with any culture or society. Koons s
Easyfun Ethereal series bridges the gap between sensualism, fun, and art by disguising each painting
with delicious foods, everyday objects, and women s body parts to create sexual references. Koons

In his piece, Bluepoles, he makes a direct reference to Jackson Pollock s Blue Poles (1952), with blue
roller coaster poles. Koons paints an amusement park layered above a beach. The background is
covered with buttermilk pancakes while the foreground contains four figures in costumes, having
Cheerios replace their faces. Koons s Bluepoles was intended for his works to be fun and enjoyable, as
Jackson Pollock wanted his artwork to be enjoyable as well. Koons involves the past and present,
using digital technology to create historical references in favors of abstract expressionism and pop art.
Not only does Koons s painting include historical references, but his paintings consists of hidden
sexual references that hides in plain sight. In Koons s, Junkyard, he creates a compelling painting,
revealing the female genitalia. A set of blonde hair flow above pea pods, and a chain link fence stacks
on top of each other, layering above the fishnet stocking legs, silhouette cuttings, and junkyard
background. The title, Junkyard, could suggest Koons s exploration between feminism, poverty, and
sex. Some females that live in poverty are forced to work as a

Examples Of Sorrow In The Odyssey
Can you know true happiness without knowing sorrow? Happiness is a subjective emotion. Some
people say they cannot be happy without first experiencing bad things. I do not think this is entirely
true. Babies know happiness when they get to play with their favorite toy or when they see something
new that excites them. Now some might argue that babies have experienced sorrow or unhappiness
when they are crying however, I think their short attention span makes them forget sorrow much easier
than happiness.
When you apply this concept to adults like Odysseus things become slightly different, he has
experienced a lot of sorrow in his life and his definition of happiness is probably very different than
mine; I do not think finally making it back to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sometimes it can be their wife or another man. If Odysseus had left a regent king in charge for ten
years during the Trojan War and for another ten after it ended and he was wandering the likelihood
that the regent king had not taken over is highly unlikely they would have waited around for that much
time for Odysseus. Now since The Odyssey does not mention one He does not specifically have to
worry about this problem however, he has to worry about someone seizing his throne. Telemachus is
around twenty or twenty one years of age now, having not known his father it is surprising he has not
been appointed to king yet or killed by the suitors so they can be king. Telemachus could also turn on
his father, remember he has never known him and does not have a bond with him, so he could be king.
Before Telemachus went on his journey he was very timid but after his journey he became brave
(Homer ). People change can change so much in twenty years that even Penelope, who has been
faithful to Odysseus the whole time, might not be the same. Everything Odysseus knows could be

Symbolism By Nathaniel Hawthorne s The Scarlet Letter
Symbolism; the use of symbols to represent something abstract by something concrete. It can be
powerful in a novel when used correctly. Nathaniel Hawthorne s The Scarlet Letter is a prime example
of Symbolism being used creatively in a work. This is what Hyatt H. Waggoner has to say about the
Hawthornes creativity. But in between the surface and the depths movement is constant and complex,
and it is in this middle that the principal value of the work lies. (Waggoner 73)What Waggoner is
talking about is the Symbolism that is used by Hawthorne. Hawthorne s symbolism is complex and
creative. When symbolism is used there must always be symbols. Symbols can take many forms and
three of these forms are, places, things, and people. Hawthorne uses these forms of symbols in his
novel. The three symbols I will highlight are; the scaffold, the scarlet letter and Reverend
Dimmesdale. To give background, The Scarlet Letter takes place in colonial Boston where the
separation of church and state is not yet in place. Hester Prynne is a normal puritan woman and is
sentenced to wear a scarlet letter A on her bosom for the remainder of her life. This is because she was
sentenced with adultery after having sexual relations with Reverend Dimmesdale, while being married
to her husband, Roger Chillingworth. Hester Prynne will not tell Roger Chillingworth who she had
relations with, but he is determined to find Hester Prynne s lover. Later in the story, Reverend
Dimmesdale becomes ill and Roger

Cognitive Exam Face Recognition Essay
FACE RECOOGNITION
This essay will talk about face recognition and several reasons why it has been studied separately. The
ability to recognise faces is of huge significance of people s daily life and differs in important ways
from other forms of object recognition (Bruce and Young, 1986). Than this essay will talk about the
processes involved in face recognition which comes from the diversity of research about familiar and
unfamiliar faces it includes behavioural studies, studies on brain damaged patients, and neuroimaging
studies. Finally, it will discuss how face recognition differs from the recognition of other object by
involving more holistic or configuration processing and different areas of the brain (Eysenck amp;
Keane, 2005). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Support for Bruce s amp; Young s (1986) model comes from studies on prosopagnosia a condition
caused by brain damage in which the patient cannot recognise familiar faces but can recognise
familiar object. For example, some prosopagnosics patients demonstrate good performance of face
recognition but poor performance of identifying facial expression, whereas others show opposite
pattern (Young et al., 1993).
Moreover, Bruce and Young (1986) suggested that the name generation component can be accessed
only via the appropriate person identity node. Thus, assuming that no brain damaged patients can put
names to face without knowing anything else about the person, however several patients showed the
opposite pattern. For instance, Flude et al. (1989) reported that patient, EST, demonstrated greater
retrieval of the occupations of familiar people when presented with their faces than when recalling
their names. Such studies show that the processing of familiar faces differs from that of unfamiliar
ones, because only relevant stored knowledge (e.g., name or occupation) with familiar faces is
accessible.
Overly, the model provides coherent explanation of many kind of information about faces and how
they relate to each other. It provides evidence about significant differences in processing of familiar
and unfamiliar faces. Nonetheless there are limitations. For instance, there is not enough information
about processing unfamiliar faces. Burton et al. (1999)

Museum Report At Los Angeles County Museum Of Art
Museum Report After visiting the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), I felt as if this was
an entire new experience for me, seeing that this was my first time to visit a museum. Before entering
the museum, I decided to analyze the front entrance of the Ahmanson building. What I observed is that
the inventor of the building kept it simple and precise, which there were red metal bars that supported
the front entrance. And there was a glass door incorporated into the entrance as well, this glass door
would consist of information of what type of art is inside. For example, modern art, Islamic art,
European art, and so on. As I went inside, I was welcomed with an enormous piece of art that
encompassed several geometric shapes. Likewise, this art piece could be studied from multiple
perspectives, from the first floor and second floor. As for the work of arts, most of the art was
displayed on white walls, it should be noted that the walls were beginning to become dirty. One last
thing about the interior of the building is that I appreciated the atmosphere, since there was sufficient
space to observe the art from different viewpoints. That being said, I will now go on and discuss about
the piece of art that spoke to me (not literally). The piece of art that spoke to me was called The
Liberator, in 1947, created by Rene Magritte. Oil and canvas were the foundation that was utilized by
Magritte, leading to the formation of his painting. One of the main reasons why this piece

Bebop Research Paper
Bebop Jazz
Jazz is a genre of music in which improvisation is typically an important part. Jazz has had a major
influence on most popular music genres in the 20th century such as rock, hip hop, Latin and the list
goes on. There s a genre of jazz for every single individual out there which makes it such an
interesting topic and from there branches another very popular subgenre of jazz called Bebop.
Bebop is a style of jazz which was developed in the 1940s. Bebop had the effect of removing jazz
from the mainstream of popular tunes which was mainly for dancing and focused on music that was

same effort put into them and has Parkers signature alto sax. The history behind the pieces, Parkers
story of how his father left and his rough childhood send shivers down my spine and I think that
everyone can learn a lesson from this musical hero. You can be anything your pursuit to be but should
be wise as well. Parker followed his dreams and what he wanted to do but because he didn t make
smart choices with his life, it ended too soon. I think without Parkers story and music; the world
would be different. Without his tragic passing, the legend would have lived on and continued to stun
us with more music. I strongly believe he is up there looking down at his music and is proud of what
he has contributed to this generation. As the sayings go Legends die but their music will continue to

Charles W. Chesnutt s The Passing Of Grandison
All throughout history humans have always tried to gain power over each other. In America it was the
white people who believed all others were inferior and should be treated as such, thus enslaved these
people. Many slave owners felt that it was their duty to take care of these slaves because they were not
mature enough to take care of themselves. The Passing of Grandison By Charles W. Chesnutt
Grandison is a slave owned by the Owens family. The plantation owner thinks Grandison is dumb and
incapable of being independent from the plantation. Thus Colonel Owens thinks Grandison is a good

also mentions to Dick to keep your eyes and ears open to find out what the abolitionists are saying and

the information back to the south. The Colonel is trying to keep his property safe from the north but
has no idea that letting Dick bring a slave up north is exactly the opposite of keeping them safe.

will be easy to free. The Colonel also knows that Tom would escape in a heartbeat up north and

Essay on Wuthering Heights

Word Count:
Identify and discuss various representations of woman in Wuthering Heights
The depictions of women in Wuthering Heights reveal that despair and happiness are direct outcomes
of one s decision to either be submissive to or oppose patriarchal constructs respectively. Catherine
and Cathy II are portrayed as examples of both how giving power to patriarchal demands leads to
misery and pain in contrast to how resisting patriarchal demands will lead to hope and joy. Firstly, the
underlying theme of freedom illuminates how the women are influenced to make such critical
decisions regarding their respective futures. Secondly, the concept of upbringing illustrates how

Catherine views freedom as something unsafe and untameable and following patriarchy as safe and
more suitable despite it also constraining her natural ambitions (Garofalo, 2008: 831). Her choice
reflects the idea that freedom is undesirable as it dangerously goes beyond social norms and putts her
at odds with society (Hanlon, 1996: 506). Giving power to patriarchal demands results in negative
outcomes for Catherine s character continued conflict with other characters, depression, sickness, in
the end, untimely death. Cathy II, who in her childhood had the idea of freedom kept away from her,
constantly attempts to resist patriarchal constructs in order to achieve being free. Cathy II is
represented as a tough, strong willed female who opposes what others expect for her, in the way she
often uses the word defy (REFERENCE), the way she aims to draw pleasure from the grief of her
enemies (REFERENCE) and how she challenges Heathcliff to be physically violent towards her
(REFERENCE). A feminist perspective of the novel notes how Cathy II empowers both herself and
the female gender in the way she attempts to escape Wuthering Heights and make her own,
independent decisions (Hoeveler, 2000: 212 214). Cathy II s view of freedom is that it s a treasure that
should be earned, and because she s been denied it by

Stewart as Macbeth,Kate Fleetwood as Lady Macbeth, and Sophie Hunter, Polly Frame, and Niamh
McGrady as the three witches. Patrick Stewart is a great actor, but I did find it hard to get past his age.
He was way too old for the part and was subpar compared to other movies I have seen him in. He
plays Macbeth as a deranged psychopath were as I see Macbeth more as an arrogant man who became
drunk on power. He has obviously gone mad by the end of the play, but Stewart s adaptation is
disturbed. Stewart nevertheless brought a fantastic element of suspense to the film. He is the best
angry sandwich maker I have ever seen. The scenes did drag on though. So much focus was on
Macbeth creating suspense that it became dry. Lady Macbeth, played by Kate Fleetwood did an ...

I appreciate Goold s attempt to attract a younger audience by making the play like a horror film, but
he went very much off the beaten path. They became distracting especially during the cauldron scene.
Nothing they were doing during that scene made any sense. The unworldly movements and rapping
was awful. I would have like the scene a bit more if the bodies would rise and say the prophecies
themselves. It was very disappointing when the witches just said them. It is one of many

Concept of Piglovian Taxes
On the one hand, Piglovian taxes are certainly a useful function in that they may serve to deter a
certain type of individual from perpetrating the crime or social offense (e.g. smoking, traffic violation,
and alcohol). These individuals would typically be those who are low risk in nature (not willing to run
the risk of being caught), concerned with their money and unable to afford the economic consequent
of being caught, rational (in stat economic issues factor higher than the emotional drive of being on a
high does), and likely of a certain age (since adolescents, for instance, are more likely to remain
undeterred by rational consequences and absorbed in the thrill of the moment.) On the other hand, the
concept of Piglovian taxes seem to me to be no different than that of the many other type of
consequences that involve economic consequences just as much as taxing does. Taking the example of
drugs and evaluating the battery of response that America has employed to treat the situation, we see
that America s endeavors in this regard are largely counterproductive. US penalties for drug
involvement are severe. Third felony drug offences involving Substance I drugs carry a mandatory life
sentence without possibility of release. The penalties also involve any sample carrying a certain
amount of the proscribed drug, regardless of the material of the sample involved. Contrast this with
the environment that exists in eh Netherlands where drugs are categorized its drugs into

The Devastating Power of Western Colonialism Essay
The colonial efforts of an imperialist power leave a wake of suffering and death, usually for the mere
purpose of propagating political, economic or military advantages. The culture and status of the
colonized is forever altered by the often cruel and violent actions taken by the colonizers during their
initial struggle for influence, along with the long term impacts that slavery, subjugation, cultural
appropriation and linguistic imperialism have over a colonized region. Hegemonic rule and full scale
imperial endeavors defined English and France foreign affairs during the 19th and early 20th
centuries. As the two largest imperialist superpowers of the time, France and Britain made countless
imperial acquisitions, not the least of which ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During the nineteenth century, a significant gap started to emerge between the dominant Western
powers an the rest of the world (Marks). The effects of this gap, built in large part on circumstance and
chance can still be seen to this day. The long term impacts of western colonialism extend far beyond
the boundaries of the newly industrialized societies, helping build the foundation for western peri
industrial imperialist culture. The causes for a nation s transition into a more nationalistic identity are
usually complex and nuanced, historically these shifts tend to correspond to reactions to periods of
great pressure and struggle or periods of great economic triumph and innovation. It can be difficult to
ascertain why an entire culture can become compliant in the often atrocious actions that are carried out
through imperialist . A sense of unity within a culture can often emerge as a reaction to a general
feeling tremendous power and influence or of great weakness and vulnerability. While cultural unity
has the potential to be massively beneficial, it can also have horrific consequences. Attempts towards
unification of cultural attitudes towards another group of people is a common tactic towards gaining
support for war, but it s also used as a means for justifying the inhumane treatment of individuals that

South Dakota
The third state with no state income tax, South Dakota s weather leans to both extremes: the hottest

O2o2 Research Paper
Scientists have discovered and invented numerous mediums by which oxygen can be utilized to treat
illnesses; such as hyperbaric chambers, hydrogen peroxide, ozone, and controlled hyperventilation
breathing techniques. Hyperbaric chambers use 100% oxygen at higher than normal pressures, usually
3 atm, to flood the body with oxygen. This method allows oxygen to permeate muscle tissue much
quicker, due to the abundance of oxygen and the higher atmospheres of pressure pushing the O2
molecules into the body. Normally used as a means of wound sterilization, hydrogen peroxide saw
popularity with scientists and doctors in the early to mid 20th century and is now once again garnering
interest in the scientific world. This liquid has the chemical formula of H2O2, which can be broken
down by the body to form oxygen radicals. H2O2 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
H2O2 can also be found in lysosomes, which are organelles that clean the cell of debris. Typically
seen and thought of in an environmental setting, ozone (O3) can also be used medically. This
compound is found naturally in our atmosphere, where O2 absorbs UV ray energy from the sun
allowing O3 to be formed, and in our air after lightning storms. In the medical field, ozone can be
produced by exposing oxygen (O2) to exorbitant amounts of energy, such as UV light or electricity.
Championed by Wim Hof and scientifically backed by the Roudbad University Medical Center,
controlled hyperventilation combined with meditation (trained focus) and exposure to extreme cold
has been shown to increase intracellular oxygen and aid the body in eliminating disease (Kox et al.
2014). The Wim Hof method results in the ability to voluntarily control the autonomic nervous system
and immune system, which was previously thought to be impossible. Throughout the following
paragraphs, we will examine various studies that utilize these oxygen therapies in an attempt to assess

Describe In Detail 5 Forms Of Punishments
In medieval times the community believed the only way to ensure a crimeless village was to make the
villages afraid of the punishments they could receive. They aimed to create the punishments painful,
humiliating and possibly permanent. Describe in detail 5 different forms of punishments Ducking
stool The ducking stool was a hand crafted wooden chair connected to an adjustable beam. This was a
form of imprisonment and torture. This punishment could vary from 1 or a couple dunks to a large
amount of dunks spread out throughout the day. This punishment was made for women who were
prostitutes or nagging wives. For example a woman who was a nagging wife, would be strapped to the
stool, paraded around the village and then taken to the river. She was then dunked into the water 3
times. Scold s bridle The scold s bridle was a metal head piece, that was strapped to a woman s head.
The head piece came with a spiky metal strip that would sit on top of the tongue. This was a form of
imprisonment and torture. This punishment was made for women was were gossips. If a woman was
caught gossiping, her husband would strap the scold s bridle on her head and would parade her around
the village with a chain which was attached to the side of the head piece. During the punishment
women could not eat or drink, they would also get verbally abused, spat at and worse. They would get
beaten and knocked around which caused broken jaws and teeth as well as blood and vomiting. Pillory

The thing that I find most compelling about this culture is how they have manage to stand the test of
time with there harsh standards they have placed upon themselves do to their beliefs in these magical
rituals and ceremonies. The one type of ritual that I think is the most interesting to me is the fact hat
they believed in some of these magical rituals and ceremonies so much that they would actually
sometimes toucher themselves to complete these rituals that are supposed to heal or help you but in
the process bring unbelievable pain in some cases. Another thing that I found to actually be crude and
unsetting is the fact that if you were sick they would literally quarantine you and if you don t get better
you are just left to die. Especially young children the fact they they would have a place designated for
sick kids to basically go and die since younger kids have a lesser chance of surviving then adults do.
The temple that was used was literally the place they kids where supposed to go to die. There were
things that I found interesting and there are thing that I have strong feeling against because they go
against my morals. These groups of humans and the culture that they believe in is very harsh due to all
the different rituals and ceremonies that they have. The culture that they believe in also dictates

The Financial Crisis Of 2008
The world before the financial crisis of 2008 had stability. Iceland in 2000 was viewed as the perfect
place to live and have your family grow. Iceland had clean energy, high standard of living, jobs, and
low government debt. Iceland was a place were children played and parents laughed and enjoyed their
life. Everyone lived well; Iceland was the role model of finance, until it all melted away. Iceland let
giant corporations come into its territory and exploit its geothermal and hydroelectric resources and its

This created a toxic situation where people took out a mortgage loan, with a high rate, could not pay it
back creating a bubble to where the investment banks had no one else to lend to, and needed to be

money that became the big investment banks bonuses. This created a global panzi scheme.
The problem is deregulation. The definition of deregulation is the elimination of government power
with in an industry. In this case banks and financial institutions of the world. Deregulation could be
seen as greed, big corporations, monopolies, where the rich get richer. Deregulation is the cause of the
financial crisis of 2008. Deregulation means no one is watching over the banks and CEO is saying no

Financial deregulation made for risky investments and looting companies. An example of this is the

Even so, many more could have died if bombs had not been dropped. Although the atomic bombs
killed thousands in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, it is widely believed that if the bombs were not dropped,
many more would have died from air raids, and ongoing warfare. According to Michael Schaller, On
June 18 Truman approved plans for a November invasion of Japan on the assumption that the atomic
bomb would not be ready and it would be desirable to have Russian assistance. ⁜ Had this November
invasion happened, it can be concluded that there would have been a staggering amount of deaths, in
addition to the deaths that would occur from the air raids and other causes. After the bombs dropped,
Hirohito, the Emperor of Japan at the time said, prolonging the war would only destroy Japan and
threaten all human civilization. ⁡ However, prior to the bombs, the Japanese would have fought to the
death for their country and their pride due to their relentless fighting. Therefore, by dropping the
atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the U.S saved lives that would have otherwise been killed
in an invasion by the Allied forces. The lives that were lost in the bombs are a significant reminder of
how powerful that technology was.

My wife is a market analyst for a financial firm in Southern California. She has described to me what
it is like on the trading floor when the market takes a significant dip, or even something as bad as a
crash, on more than a few occasions. Reports come in, numbers start tumbling, and for a brief time
everyone just stares at their computer screens trying to take in all the implications of what those
numbers mean, what can be done, and how bad the situation actually is. And, obviously, some people
lose their heads. There is cursing. There is a sense of doom and a certain degree of fatalistic thinking.

What Is The 1988 Reform Act To Present
There s little disbelief that education, as a social institution, has an important role to play in our
society (Moore, Aiken, Chapman, 2005). This essay will look further into the influences of social,
economic and political changes in Britain s education over the last 30 years. The essay will mainly
review and focus on the eras between the 1988 reform Act to present. This essay will explore further
into the influences of the national curriculum, how conservatives, labour and the coalition have
affected social and economic environments in education and comparisons between the conservatives
and labour. It will also discuss, philosophers Dewey and Freire reviewing how both of their methods
of pedagogy has influenced teachers methods and approaches to teaching.
Successive conservatives in the 1980s increased the pace of improvement and reform and introduced
Market Mechanisms into the education system, in aim to force schools to increase their standards of
teaching (Ross Gibson, 2007). The real uprising in Britain s education legislation came in 1988 when
the education Reform Act was introduced, this Act is widely known to be the most important since the
1944 Butlers Act (Meredith, 1989). The Act introduced the National curriculum, so far being the most
important provision, presenting new outcomes for secondary and primary education. The National

  • 2. empiricism Essay Empiricism Empiricism by nature is the belief that there is no knowledge without experience. How can one know what something tastes like if they have never tasted it? For example, would someone know that an apple is red if they have never actually have seen one. Someone can tell you an apple is red, but, if you never have seen one, can you really be sure? Empiricists use three anchor points in which they derive their opinions from. The first of these points is; the only source of genuine knowledge is sense experience. An easier way to understand this is to compare the mind to a clean sponge. As the sponge touches things, it takes with it, a piece of everything it touches. Without this, the sponge would remain clean and be void of anything ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another of the classic empiricists is George Berkeley (1685 1753), who believes that knowledge is possible. He believed that it was only through experience and not reason that we have knowledge of reality (p.99). The best way to describe what Berkeley was trying to say would be found in what we call today idealism. Idealism by definition is a position that maintains that ultimate reality is mental or spiritual in nature. He believed that reality is made up in many individual minds rather than one cosmic mind. Hence, when Berkeley says that we have an idea of something he is not necessarily referring to a particular concept but to the experience of our memory of the combined ideas. The third empiricist is David Hume (1711 1776) and he does not answer this question as easily as the first two have. He believes that knowledge is possible but is limited by what we cannot know about the world outside of our own experience. Since we can only know the contents of our individual minds, knowledge would and can be different for each person. Hume believes that sensory data is key for any individual in order to know something is real. For example, if two people were sitting together, one possessing the ability to see and hear and the other does not, could the one the latter really know that a car drove by and that fact that it was red? Examples like this one are why Hume ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Passenger Pigeons In America Passenger Pigeon The world has experienced many mass extinctions within its lifetime. More and more are occuring today with the help of homo sapiens. Everyone in the modern age has heard of the most recent extinction of the white rhino, that was hunted for their prized horns. However, not many have heard of the passenger pigeons claim to fame. There was an overabundance of them in the United States, particularly in eastern North America. Passenger pigeons had been in America before the Europeans dropped by and the United States was not even an idea yet. Following the colonization of America was the deconstruction of the passenger pigeon s habitat and then eventually pigeons attacking the crops belonging to the farmers for provisions. With the new developments in human technology throughout the years, like the train, hunting these animals became easier to accomplish. Hunters would travel from all over the US and Canada to get a piece of the creatures with the delectable meat. Nevertheless, this species might have been able to survive the slaughter of man if it were not for the fact that these hunters disrupted their breeding and nesting grounds. In 1900, Republican Congressman John F. Lacey of Iowa introduced the nation s first wildlife protection law, which banned the interstate shipping of unlawfully killed game. That year Congress passed the Lacey Act, followed by the tougher Weeks McLean Act in 1913 and, five years later, the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, which protected not just birds but also their eggs, nests, and feathers. However it was too late for the passenger pigeons, all the flocks were dying out and only Martha, a 29 year old pigeon in the Cincinnati zoo remained. • 4. Hector Berlioz, My Favorite Composer Hector Berlioz, my favorite composer, (born December 11, 1803ㅡdied March 8, 1869) is deemed one of the greatest who, ...[contributed] to the modern orchestra with his Treatise on Information. His mental state and life shaped a composer who had such a raw, creative sound that is reflected prominently in his works, such as Symphonie fantastique and La Damnation de Faust. During the age of where he was to attend school, France was at war and as a result he had to be taught by his father who first introduced the young boy to music, which I think was the moment he sparked an interest in music. By the age of twelve he was composing for large chamber groups where he was taught to play the flute and guitar. As every father has dreams for their kids, he sent Berlioz off to Paris to study medicine where he obtained his first degree in science. With the love of music in his heart, he forced his acceptance to where he would be a pupil of Jean François Lesueur, professor at Paris Conservatoire. Having Manic Depressive illness, or bipolar disorder, is probably the reason he was so creative in his works which is exemplified in Symphonie fantastique. He started drinking his father s whiskey when he was 12 and had difficulties attending school. Abraham s family all like to have a drink and at family parties they tend drink to excess. Abraham says that drinking makes him feel like a big man , without a drink Abraham is quiet and unhappy. Abraham is unemployed and he spends most of his benefits money on cheap alcohol. The aim of this study is to outline and explain Abrahams behaviour using 2 different psychological Psychodynamic Approach The first thing to look at is that Abraham has a problem with drinking, this problem can be explained with the fixation on a certain stage of childhood development. According to Freud growing up we go through certain stages of development he named psychosexual because they all represent certain erogenous zones of the body these are oral, anal, phallic, latent and genital (Catatan ku, seorang doktor 2011). We are said to go through these stages from birth all the way to adulthood, at different ages we gratify these different sexual areas with different stimulation (breast feeding, expulsion of faeces, etc.) Abraham should be in the genital stage that effects a child from puberty onwards, he should show heterosexual interest in people of a similar age and have the ability to form mature relationships assuming he has successfully transitioned through each stage. Failure to transition a stage would result in what is called a fixation ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. The Architecture in Melbourne The architecture in Melbourne is characterised by a substantial juxtaposition of old and new architecture. Where there are old architectural buildings that are an icon of Melbourne, there are also more recent buildings that have built a reputation of a Melbourne Icon. These more recent icons are known as The Melbourne Museum and Federation Square. Both the Melbourne Museum and Federation Square started off as a competition for architects to design the new building, whoever came up with the best concept/design would be the designer of the building or space. The Melbourne Museum competition was announced in 1994 where it was also opened for architects to design. The same chance for architects was given to design a new civic square , known as Federation Square we see today. The Victorian Government held this competition in 1996 and was announced to be an international competition. With the Centenary of Federation celebrations coming up in 2001, the main idea of the design was to generate a cultural space in the Melbourne CBD. The designs and the final plans for the Melbourne Museum were presented in May 1995, where Denton Corker Marshall (DCM) Architects won the competition. Lab Architects, which was based in London at that time, was to partner up with Bates Smart to design this new cultural space, where Bates Smart was considered to be one of the most prominent architecture firms in Melbourne. • 7. Irony In Shirley Jackson s The Lottery Caleigh Bishop English 101 October 10, 2017 Formal Essay I The Many Instances of Irony in The Lottery In Shirley Jackson s short story The Lottery, she uses many examples of irony. Irony is the use of words that are the opposite of their usual meaning or what is expected to happen. The use of irony plays an important role in delivering Jackson s sarcasm. The author holds our attention all throughout the story and builds our suspense by using irony with the characters and events that take place. Some instances of irony that she uses during the story to hold our attention are: The title, the weather, the stones, the lunch and even some of the characters. The sentence Although the villagers had forgotten the ritual and lost the original black box, they still remembered to use stones. (par. 74) shows that the villagers didn t care about the box or the ritual, but they did care about the tool that would be used to kill somebody. The author is trying to tell that the villagers didn t find pleasure in the ritual, but they did find pleasure in using the rock. Although the villagers find the ritual to be long and boring, they find pleasure in using the rocks to murder one of their family members or friends. The villagers find pleasure to be more important than the ritual itself. Mrs. Hutchinson is washing dishes whenever she realizes what day and time it is. After she realizes what day it is, she hurriedly runs to where the ritual is taking place. His paintings includes everyday objects, female clothing, and many desserts to communicate with any culture or society. Koons s Bluepoles was intended for his works to be fun and enjoyable, as Jackson Pollock wanted his artwork to be enjoyable as well. • 9. Examples Of Sorrow In The Odyssey Can you know true happiness without knowing sorrow? Happiness is a subjective emotion. Some people say they cannot be happy without first experiencing bad things. I do not think this is entirely true. Babies know happiness when they get to play with their favorite toy or when they see something new that excites them. Now some might argue that babies have experienced sorrow or unhappiness when they are crying however, I think their short attention span makes them forget sorrow much easier than happiness. Now since The Odyssey does not mention one He does not specifically have to worry about this problem however, he has to worry about someone seizing his throne. • 10. Symbolism By Nathaniel Hawthorne s The Scarlet Letter Symbolism; the use of symbols to represent something abstract by something concrete. It can be powerful in a novel when used correctly. Nathaniel Hawthorne s The Scarlet Letter is a prime example of Symbolism being used creatively in a work. This is what Hyatt H. Waggoner has to say about the Hawthornes creativity. But in between the surface and the depths movement is constant and complex, and it is in this middle that the principal value of the work lies. (Waggoner 73)What Waggoner is talking about is the Symbolism that is used by Hawthorne. Hawthorne s symbolism is complex and creative. When symbolism is used there must always be symbols. Symbols can take many forms and three of these forms are, places, things, and people. Hawthorne uses these forms of symbols in his novel. The three symbols I will highlight are; the scaffold, the scarlet letter and Reverend Dimmesdale. To give background, The Scarlet Letter takes place in colonial Boston where the separation of church and state is not yet in place. Hester Prynne is a normal puritan woman and is sentenced to wear a scarlet letter A on her bosom for the remainder of her life. This is because she was sentenced with adultery after having sexual relations with Reverend Dimmesdale, while being married to her husband, Roger Chillingworth. The ability to recognise faces is of huge significance of people s daily life and differs in important ways from other forms of object recognition (Bruce and Young, 1986). Than this essay will talk about the processes involved in face recognition which comes from the diversity of research about familiar and unfamiliar faces it includes behavioural studies, studies on brain damaged patients, and neuroimaging studies. Finally, it will discuss how face recognition differs from the recognition of other object by involving more holistic or configuration processing and different areas of the brain (Eysenck amp; Keane, 2005). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Support for Bruce s amp; Young s (1986) model comes from studies on prosopagnosia a condition caused by brain damage in which the patient cannot recognise familiar faces but can recognise familiar object. For example, some prosopagnosics patients demonstrate good performance of face recognition but poor performance of identifying facial expression, whereas others show opposite pattern (Young et al., 1993). Moreover, Bruce and Young (1986) suggested that the name generation component can be accessed only via the appropriate person identity node. Thus, assuming that no brain damaged patients can put names to face without knowing anything else about the person, however several patients showed the opposite pattern. For instance, Flude et al. (1989) reported that patient, EST, demonstrated greater retrieval of the occupations of familiar people when presented with their faces than when recalling their names. Such studies show that the processing of familiar faces differs from that of unfamiliar ones, because only relevant stored knowledge (e.g., name or occupation) with familiar faces is accessible. Overly, the model provides coherent explanation of many kind of information about faces and how they relate to each other. It provides evidence about significant differences in processing of familiar and unfamiliar faces. Nonetheless there are limitations. For instance, there is not enough information about processing unfamiliar faces. Burton et al. (1999) ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Museum Report At Los Angeles County Museum Of Art Museum Report After visiting the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), I felt as if this was an entire new experience for me, seeing that this was my first time to visit a museum. Before entering the museum, I decided to analyze the front entrance of the Ahmanson building. What I observed is that the inventor of the building kept it simple and precise, which there were red metal bars that supported the front entrance. And there was a glass door incorporated into the entrance as well, this glass door would consist of information of what type of art is inside. For example, modern art, Islamic art, European art, and so on. As I went inside, I was welcomed with an enormous piece of art that encompassed several geometric shapes. Likewise, this art piece could be studied from multiple perspectives, from the first floor and second floor. As for the work of arts, most of the art was displayed on white walls, it should be noted that the walls were beginning to become dirty. One last thing about the interior of the building is that I appreciated the atmosphere, since there was sufficient space to observe the art from different viewpoints. That being said, I will now go on and discuss about the piece of art that spoke to me (not literally). The piece of art that spoke to me was called The Liberator, in 1947, created by Rene Magritte. Oil and canvas were the foundation that was utilized by Magritte, leading to the formation of his painting. One of the main reasons why this piece ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Essay on Wuthering Heights Jordan smith EGL120 Essay Student ID: 1051867 Word Count: Identify and discuss various representations of woman in Wuthering Heights The depictions of women in Wuthering Heights reveal that despair and happiness are direct outcomes of one s decision to either be submissive to or oppose patriarchal constructs respectively. Catherine and Cathy II are portrayed as examples of both how giving power to patriarchal demands leads to misery and pain in contrast to how resisting patriarchal demands will lead to hope and joy. Firstly, the underlying theme of freedom illuminates how the women are influenced to make such critical decisions regarding their respective futures. Secondly, the concept of upbringing illustrates how childhood, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Catherine views freedom as something unsafe and untameable and following patriarchy as safe and more suitable despite it also constraining her natural ambitions (Garofalo, 2008: 831). Her choice reflects the idea that freedom is undesirable as it dangerously goes beyond social norms and putts her at odds with society (Hanlon, 1996: 506). Giving power to patriarchal demands results in negative outcomes for Catherine s character continued conflict with other characters, depression, sickness, in the end, untimely death. Cathy II, who in her childhood had the idea of freedom kept away from her, constantly attempts to resist patriarchal constructs in order to achieve being free. Cathy II is represented as a tough, strong willed female who opposes what others expect for her, in the way she often uses the word defy (REFERENCE), the way she aims to draw pleasure from the grief of her enemies (REFERENCE) and how she challenges Heathcliff to be physically violent towards her (REFERENCE). A feminist perspective of the novel notes how Cathy II empowers both herself and the female gender in the way she attempts to escape Wuthering Heights and make her own, independent decisions (Hoeveler, 2000: 212 214). Some things about his character I liked, however, I did have many complaints. Goold chose Patrick Stewart as Macbeth,Kate Fleetwood as Lady Macbeth, and Sophie Hunter, Polly Frame, and Niamh McGrady as the three witches. Patrick Stewart is a great actor, but I did find it hard to get past his age. He was way too old for the part and was subpar compared to other movies I have seen him in. He plays Macbeth as a deranged psychopath were as I see Macbeth more as an arrogant man who became drunk on power. He has obviously gone mad by the end of the play, but Stewart s adaptation is disturbed. Stewart nevertheless brought a fantastic element of suspense to the film. He is the best angry sandwich maker I have ever seen. The scenes did drag on though. So much focus was on Macbeth creating suspense that it became dry. O2o2 Research Paper Scientists have discovered and invented numerous mediums by which oxygen can be utilized to treat illnesses; such as hyperbaric chambers, hydrogen peroxide, ozone, and controlled hyperventilation breathing techniques. Hyperbaric chambers use 100% oxygen at higher than normal pressures, usually 3 atm, to flood the body with oxygen. This method allows oxygen to permeate muscle tissue much quicker, due to the abundance of oxygen and the higher atmospheres of pressure pushing the O2 molecules into the body. Normally used as a means of wound sterilization, hydrogen peroxide saw popularity with scientists and doctors in the early to mid 20th century and is now once again garnering interest in the scientific world.
