Theory of Demand and Supply
1. Supply and Demand
Economists Are a Joke?
________________________________________
A smarty pants old story says that if you want a learned economist, all you have to do is get a parrot
and train the bird to squawk supply and demand in response to every question.
Not fair, but ...
It s true that the theory of supply and demand is a central part of economics. It is widely applicable,
and also is a model of the way economists try to think most problems through, even when the theory
of supply and demand is not applicable.
A Theory of Price
________________________________________
What is it? The theory of supply and demand is a theory of price and output in competitive markets.
Adam Smith had argued that each good or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
You have to have both.
Accordingly, we will first analyze competitive markets, by discussing demand and supply separately.
Then we will try to put them back together (synthesize them) in order to understand the working of
competitive markets.
Thus, in the next few pages, we will look at
demand
supply
equilibrium of demand and supply
First, demand.
Demand
________________________________________
In economics, we need to use terms a little more carefully than they are sometimes used in ordinary
discussions. In general use, Demand is a word that can have more than one meaning, but in
microeconomics we define it more carefully so that it has only one meaning. Here is the definition:
Definition: Demand
Demand is the relationship between price and quantity demanded for a particular good and service in
particular circumstances. For each price the demand relationship tells the quantity the buyers want to
buy at that corresponding price. The quantity the buyers want to buy at a particular price is called the
Quantity Demanded.
The key point is to distinguish between demand (the relationship) and quantity demanded. That
distinction is important for microeconomics, although people often do not make it in ordinary
discussion.
Why do we define demand in this specialized

Egyptian Pyramids And The Pyramids
The Egyptian pyramids were an important aspect of the Egyptian life and culture constructed around
2500 BCE with their geographical location being at the West bank of the River Nile. The three
pyramids on the Giza plateau were built in a span of three generations by three Pharaohs namely
Khafre, Menkaure and Khufu. These monuments are unsurpassed in terms of height and mass with the
architects of the pyramids building them in a way that they could face the setting sun as they served as
a resting place for the dead. In stead of that, each pyramid acted as a royal mortuary which included a
temple on its base and a causeway which was made out of stone leading from the east of the plateau.
These temples were used by the living to honor the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The completion of the upper hemisphere of the Pantheon is connected to a hypothetical lower
hemisphere that touches the central point of the floor. This central point is referred to as the Oculus
and has an opening of about 8.3 meters wide at the top of the cupola that serves as the only source of
light for the building as shown in figure 1.1. Its basic design was devised in a way whereby the portico
had columns attached to a rotunda with a dome shape. An intermediate block was put in between the
rectilinear portico and the round rotunda to help in transition between the two. Its walls are made from
concrete that is brick faced which was witnessed in most ancient buildings and the Roman aqua ducts.
The concrete of the dome was graded into 6 layers with the architects mixing scoria and a low density
volcanic rock at the top of the dome as derived from Tod Marder and Mark Wilson. Scholars have
indicated that Egypt was a kingdom formed and united under a single ruler in which the government
was centralized thus enhancing engagement between the political elite and the citizens. Earlier
Egyptian Pharaohs had absolute power owing to the fact that they appointed members of the royal
family to prestigious positions but with time the government positions became hereditary and most of

Black Death Of The 14th Century Analysis
The Black Death of the fourteenth century was an extremely deadly pandemic that killed off around
half of Europe s population. It acted quickly, killing the people who contracted it within three days
once they displayed any symptoms. It s no surprise that the people who were affected reacted the way
they did. In terms of the responses, those of the Black Death and those of Zika, Ebola, and HIV AIDS
were actually very similar in how the fear the outbreaks produced overwhelmed the masses into being
overprotective and paranoid for their own wellbeing.
According to Giovanni Boccaccio s The Decameron, hundreds of Florentine citizens would die daily,
and those who have not met that fate yet would have to walk along the streets inhaling putrid scents ...

HIV AIDS was a sexually transmitted disease that preyed on the gay community in many areas of the
world. No one had an idea of what it was and how it worked; everyone simply relied on the fact that
once you had it, you were as good as dead. On top of sex being somewhat of a taboo topic in
American society, there was also a significant amount of discrimination towards the gay communities,
and once it was known that it was common because of members having several partners, HIV became
more of a stereotype. Gay members were shunned and isolated even more than they already were,
with people not wanting to even be near them. Fear was not the only factor that affected society and
fostered hostility towards others; the pre existent stigma against gay people always played a

Object Permanence
The third time I visited Vera, I started testing her understanding of object permanence. I did the same
test as last time, with putting her teddy under the blanket. Right when I put the bear under the blanket,
Vera reached under and retrieved the teddy. Since she was able to do that, I tried the A not B error.
When I put the teddy under the first blanket, she got it. Then when I put it under the second blanket,
she looked under the first blanket. This confirmed Piagets theory of the A not B error (Crosby, 108). I
also noticed that Vera enjoys solitary play. If I am in the room with her and sitting on the couch, she
will gladly play with her toys alone. This is not an issue at her age. If she continued this past age five
or six, then it could be a red flag of something such as anxiety according to Burgess, Rubin, Cheah,
and Nelson (Crosby, 489). She also responded to simple requests. For example if you asked for a high
five, she would do it. When I started singing When You re Happy and You know it, she could clap.
The next thing I did was giving Vera her bottle, and to my surprise, she now holds the bottle with one
hand. In addition, I noticed that she was eating most all normal foods now. She had a peanut butter
sandwich cut up in very small pieces. The last thing I did was ask ... Show more content on

It is also harder to measure her social development of Vera because she is not yet talking and does not
have friends to measure the social ability. She smiles and babbles at people but that is mostly it. In
addition, it is more difficult to measure her mental development because she cannot talk yet and
understand her mental state. The only way we can understand her emotions is through her face and
body language. Lastly, there is limited information about things such as key life events because she is

Themes in Blue Velvet
Exploring the Dark Side: Contrasting Themes in Blue Velvet
The subconscious psyche is one of the most fascinating and almost completely inexplicable aspects of
human behavior. Even more intriguing than merely the subconscious is the notion of a darker, more
repressed side that many individuals refuse to acknowledge exists within them. In David Lynch s film
Blue Velvet, the director attempts to explore the psyche of a young man named Jeffrey Beaumont,
most notably the clash between his darker side and good side for the first time in his life. Using
themes that sharply contrast one another, Lynch provides insight into the character of Jeffrey and the
struggle that he is faced with. Jeffrey is in a transitional period of his life, ... Show more content on

Lynch chooses to use such stark contrast in an effort to establish not only the differences in one s
perception, but of the psyche as well. The opening sequence is used by Lynch as a metaphor for
Jeffrey s state of mind throughout the entire film, as Jeffrey realizes he has a dark side yet is trying
(most of the time) to suppress it. The town of Lumberton, like Jeffrey, is an idealized version of what
America and Americans should be like and yet, much like Jeffrey s mind, it is full of dark secrets and
contradictions. One aspect of Jeffrey s psyche being explored is the notion of his battle between
innocent love for a young girl and the animalistic lust he possesses for an older, more mature woman.
The good or innocent side of Jeffrey is personified in the character of Sandy. Sandy is often depicted
wearing light colors, with blue eyes and perfectly brushed blonde hair. When Sandy is first introduced
into the film, she enters through utter darkness, stepping out of the shadows and into the light in a
medium shot. Lynch follows this up with a long reverse tracking two shot in which Jeffrey and Sandy
make small talk and innocently flirt with one another. Dorothy s introduction into the film, however, is
quite different. The film first truly introduces the audience and Jeffrey to Dorothy with a subjective
shot from her closet. After breaking into Dorothy s apartment and

Banning The Freedom Of The Press
Although some may consider these books controversial or inappropriate, many English classes have
required us to read these books. Like the teachers that assigned us these books, I believe that even
controversial books can ultimately boost, not deter, our educational wealth. I oppose book banning for
three main reasons. First, I believe that education should be open to everyone. Everyone should have
an opportunity to read any literature of their choosing and form his or her own opinions based on the
reading. Micah Issitt lists three basic rights covered under the freedom of the press: the right to
publish, the right to confidentiality of sources, and the right of citizens to access the products of the
press. My second reason specifically addresses the last right stating that citizens should have access to
the press. The government should not restrict books from being published or interfere into personal
affairs as this is an infringement of the First Amendment. Finally, I believe that parents should monitor
what their own children read, but not have the authority to ban other children from reading these
novels. For these reasons, I conclude that the government should play no role in the issue what
citizens do and do not read, and that book restriction should remain a solely private matter. hile I agree
that parents should play an active role in educating their children and as their primary guardians, have
the legal right to monitor what their children read, I disagree that

Emily Dickinson Essay
amp;#8220;Best Things dwell out of Sight ;(#998) describes one of America amp;#8217;s greatest
poets. She dwelled out of sight for most of her life and her poems, with the exception of seven
published anonymously, remained out of sight until well after her death. Many literary scholars have
attempted a biography on this mysterious woman and poet and yet none are conclusive. Dickinson
remains an enigma even today but biographical speculation allows us to analyze some of her poetry
even though we may be completely inaccurate about what we presuppose.
There are some facts about Emily Elizabeth Dickinson that we know for certain. She was born on

After leaving school she returned home and spent the remainder of her life there. She took occasional
trips but always returned home to her sanctuary and eventually stopped travelling and even leaving her
house completely. She corresponded with her confidantes and friends through letters, rarely seeing
them.
The men she corresponded with during her life include Benjamin Newton, a law student; Reverend
Charles Wadsworth, a Philadelphia minister; Thomas Higginson, a literary critic and Civil War hero,
and Otis Lord, a judge who had been her father amp;#8217;s closest friend. She regarded these men as
intellectual advisers as well as friends. Although many of them found her poetry to be fascinating,
none advised her to publish them.
Dickinson wrote the majority of her poetry during the 1860 amp;#8217;s at which time she had
become increasingly reclusive. She began wearing only white dresses and she hardly left her home, let
alone Amherst. Although she occasionally visited friends, by the time she was forty years of age, she
refused invitations to leave home and spent the remainder of her life taking care of her parents until
they died (her father died in 1847, her mother died in 1882). Emily herself became bedridden during
the last year of her life and her sister, Lavinia, nursed her until

The Dangerous Game Compare And Contrast
In The Dangerous Game, Rainsford is stuck on an island known as ship trap island, after falling off his
yacht, and is met by a ruthless, hunter who murders for sport. In High Noon, The newly married Will
Kane is scares by the news that Frank Miller is coming back to town. He sent him to jail for murderer,
but now, him and his gang are back for revenge. Although the film High Noon and the short story, The
Dangerous Game have many differences like conflicts, there are a lot of similarities like setting and
characters.
It is amazing how a rogue, western town and a isolated, wild island can be so similar in setting. The
setting of these stories are both presented really well in these quotes. In High Noon, it says, But when
they read about shooting and killing in the streets, what are they going to think then? (Foreman, 315).
This quote represents the lawlessness of the western town because there is shooting in the streets
without any restriction. Another quote with many similarities in the Dangerous Game states, Hunting?

this is proven very well in The Dangerous Game. It says, If my quarry eludes me for three whole days,

Will, as he can and will set traps, but Will is stuck with only approximately one hour. Amy says that at
10:51, and the train comes at noon. It says, We ve got an hour! (Foreman, 297). That quote helps
pinpoint how long they have, as soon as they know. In comparison, there is a big difference because
Will has to scramble and decide whether to stay or leave, which takes time, and then has to get
deputies, which takes even more time, and really cuts it close. Rainsford, on the other hand, has a lot
more time to think and set up traps, but Zaroff knows the forest well, which is another

Crime And Social Control Theory Essay
Social control theory refers the ideas that society is responsible for maintaining law abiding citizens
and/or producing deviant behavior (Hagan, 2016). The textbook generalizes that social control
theories view crime as taking place when social control or bonds to society break down (Hagan, 2016,
p. 170). This is concluded by the theories of four theorists Walter Reckless, Travis Hirschi, Michael
Gottfredson, and John Hagan who investigated and theorized different philosophies that explain the
relationship between crime and social control (Hagan, 2016). Reckless s theory of containment is one
of the most prominent and earliest models of social control theory (Hagan, 2016). Reckless theorized
that individuals have various social controls (containments) that assist them in resisting pressures that
draw them toward criminality (Hagan, 2016, p. 170). This theory holds that social factors and external
or internal pressures influence individuals to either abide by the law or produce criminality (Hagan,
2016). A second theory is Hirschi s social bond theory that states delinquency takes place when a
person s bonds to society are weakened or broken, thus reducing personal stakes in conformity
(Hagan, 2016, p. 170). Hirschi posited that the bonds consist of four components: Commitment,
belief, involvement, and attachment (Hagan, 2016). Commitment refers to an individual s
responsibilities, such as a job or providing for a family (Hagan, 2016). It states if an individual

In such a scenario, the integrity of the profession of journalism comes into question. Any acts of bias
by the journalists may adversely affect the profession of journalism. Therefore, the question of ethical
considerations takes a very serious turn with regard to war reporting. Journalists need to be sure that
the information being imparted is precise and accurate and it does not disclose any confidential
information. Journalists must also ensure that the sources from which the information is being
collected are credible and the risk of misreporting is acceptably low. Debate on War Journalism The
extent of war journalism is still contentiously debated, and mostly due to the same reasons as
previously mentioned, i.e. Safety, Security and Strategic disclosure. International journalism has
comprehensively dealt with the coverage of war and this is because of the dramatic nature of conflicts.
The trend of sensational reporting has been observed to be on rise in the recent past and this practice
compromises on the professionalism of journalism. As mentioned already, the main objective of
journalists is to impart the true and necessary facts to the media consumers; however, the recent wave
of sensationalism and commercialism has diverted professional journalism in a completely new
direction. Stories which are considered

What Is The Critical Criticism Of Waiting For The Barbarians
3. J.M. Coetzee s Waiting for the Barbarians
3.1 Critical Discourse Analysis
In Coetzee s slim novel Waiting for the Barbarians, the author focuses on the abiding problems of man
s malicious treatment of men and women. During the composition of Coetzee s third novel, the anti
apartheid activist Stephen Biko was murdered in prison. The subsequent media coverage of the public
inquiry provided Coetzee with his theme for Waiting for the Barbarians; The effects of totalitarianism
and torture on the life of liberal conscience [and] the simultaneous processes of distancing and
homecoming (Attwell 201). Throughout the novel, the Magistrate is repulsed, and questions, the acts

Eventually, the Magistrate realizes that true reciprocation between him and the barbarian girl proves to
be impossible, and he makes the determination of taking her back to her own Place. This literary
cocktail invented by Coetzee in Waiting for the Barbarians is incredibly powerful: an intricate merger
of cultural Otherness, an idiosyncratic sexual desire involving a tortured body, and an Empire
teetering on the brink of collapse. What is more, the Magistrate s decision to bring the barbarian girl
back to her own Place, has far reaching implications for himself, and subsequently positions him upon
his return to the frontier, in the role of the Other: There is not one face among them that I recognize,
their eyes are stony, they do not answer my questions but march us back like prisoners through the
open gates (Coetzee, WftB 82). During his incarceration, the Magistrate has ample opportunity for self
reflection, or more eloquently put his self recriminating psychology; I wanted to do what was right, I
wanted to make reparation: I will not deny this decent impulse, however mixed with more
questionable motives: there must always be a place for penance and reparation (Coetzee, WftB 88).
The old Magistrate feels like he is turning into an animal and eventually escapes from captivity, but
having nowhere else to go he returns to his cell. Finally, Colonel Joll returns from his military
expedition into the barbaric lands, bringing back twelve miserable captives, to prove to his children
that the barbarians are real (Coetzee, WftB 113). The colonialist inclinations, which are attached to the
barbarians, are described in a diabolically literal

The Shema Research Paper
The Shema
The Shema is a Jewish prayer that serves as a daily declaration of faith. Jews recite the Shema twice
each day, in the morning and in the evening, as well as on holidays and during Shabbat, the Jewish
Sabbath. The Shema consists of three excerpts from the Torah, and Jews follow certain rules when
reciting it. It begins with a six word phrase Shema Yisrael, Adonai Eloheinu, Adonai Echad which
translates as Hear O Israel, the Lord is our God; the Lord is One. The phrase Shema Yisrael is one of
the most well known Jewish sayings in the world.
An Overview of the Shema
Faithful Jews have been reciting the Shema since ancient times. The Shema consists of three biblical
excerpts: Deuteronomy 6:4 9, Deuteronomy 11:13 21, and Numbers ... Show more content on

Children who are capable of saying the Shema generally are expected to learn not only to recite it
accurately but also to recite it at the appropriate time of day.
Customs
Jews may sit or stand when reciting the Shema, depending on the congregation to which they belong.
Before commencing their recital of the Shema, Jews should take time to think about its meaning.
Jewish law requires more focused concentration on the first verse of the Shema than on other verses of
the prayer. As a result, it is common for people to close their eyes or cover them with their right hand
to block out distractions as they speak this verse. They usually speak the first verse aloud; again, this
is to sharpen concentration and focus on the meaning of the declaration of faith. The other verses may
be spoken in quieter tones. When people recite the Shema, they should take care to avoid speaking too
quickly and slurring words together; each word should be articulated clearly and deliberately. Many
recite the Shema in Hebrew, but those who cannot speak Hebrew may recite the Shema in their native

Differentiating the Renaissance Period and Middle Ages...
The Renaissance was a time of change and prosperity. The decision was made depending on the
difference of two eras. Unlike the Renaissance, the Middle Ages were a thousand years of ignorance
and superstition. The Renaissance men were leaders in an era of rebirth and learning looked to the
Ancient Greeks and Romans for models of advance. Many historians felt that the Middle Ages and the
Renaissance were one era. The debate centers around whether the Renaissance was a unique age or a
continuation of the Middle Ages.

Burchardt s ideas fall into the lap of Petrarch. (Doc. 4) Petrarch believed that there was a new era; he
said this by stating that presently people believed again in salvation in the afterlife. Many writers,
Petrarch and Erasmus, show evidence of a new era which support my hypothesis stated in my thesis.
Many Historians such as W.T. Waugh found little or no evidence to support the fact that there was a
significant difference between the Renaissance and the Middle Ages. It cannot even be said that the
Humanists of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries revived the study of the classics. Scholars had
been nourished on the classics for centuries... (Doc. 3) This quote from A History of Europe tells
Waugh s view of no change. He concludes that since the scholars read Greek and Roman classics he
felt that the reoccurrence of bringing back these texts was just a high point of the Middle Ages. I
further disagree with Mr. Waugh because there was a significant change in both times; in the
Renaissance people looked towards religion, afterlife, and luxury. These were humane personalities
that were not shown in the Middle Ages. Many scientists, writers and philosopher s opposed the
negative views of people like W.T. Waugh. Ingenious men like Leonardo Da Vinci and Michelangelo
di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni with their futuristic ideas and burrokh style art preferred to differ from
the views of the opposition. Da Vinci was a complex man with artistic and anatomic skills. Da Vinci

Genetic Counselor Career Essay
Genetic counseling is the job path I want to take when I am older. This profession has a tough price to
pay, especially when talking to patients, because sometimes the truth is hard to hear. This challenge is
a daily task for genetic counselors, but the job also has great pay, credibility, and work conditions. If I
were to go into this field, it will not only be suitable, it will be enjoyable. Becoming a genetic
counselor requires a lot of prep in college and tertiary levels of education, but this career is worthy
because of the credibility and enjoyment of the field. The definition of genetic counseling is, an
educational counseling process for individuals and families who have a genetic disease or may be at
risk for a disease to facilitate informed decision making (Definition of genetic counseling). In years
past many genetic counselors have received all different types of School Improvement Grant awards
(SIG). In order to become a genetic counselor one must first need to graduate college with a masters
degree, pass 31 programs and then a few comprehensive exams, and constantly continue my education

Social Expectations Of Marriage
Marriage is known to be a serious commitment by both the husband and wife in the past and to present
day. Therefore, it is believed that it comes with many responsibilities and expectations. They also feel
that to be married there are certain eligibilities. Before current society the husband expected for the
wife to be a stay at home mother and have all the house duties complete when he arrived home from
work. The expectations from the wife was that her husband would provide the income. Now, the
expectations are entirely different. They both are expected to provide for the family as well as help
with duties around the house. These modern expectations are concluded from many different reasons
and a main one recently is from viewing of social media or from seeing family relationships such as
parents or grandparents. The couple in the marriage then set their expectations so high that the
outcome is usually negative. Why are there so many expectations for marriage that people feel obliged
to have some sort of qualifications? While social media and impact from relative relationships can be
an influence to the expectations for a marriage the outcome may not appear to come out like desired
and much conflict between the couple can be expected. Present day beliefs are that enable to marry
there has to be goals met. Marriage is believed to come with many expectations of how a marriage

The Importance Of Toxic Leadership
The Corps of the Noncommissioned Officer (NCO) has been around since the formation of the
Continental Army in 1775. The basic responsibility of the NCO was to fill gaps in the lines and keep
soldiers quiet on mission while leading (Perkioniemi, 2009). Currently, the responsibilities of the
NCO focus on soldier welfare and accomplishing the mission (NCO Creed). Toxic leadership is a
serious concern for the military, and it is undermining the reputation of the NCO Corps. What is toxic
leadership, how can it be addressed, and what will happen to the Corps if it is allowed to continue?
Toxic leadership as defined by Wilson (2014) is a combination of self centered attitudes, motivations,
and behaviors that have adverse effects on subordinates, the organization, and mission performance .
NCOs, just as civilians, range from poor leaders to excellent leaders; but when does poor leadership
become toxic leadership and what causes this toxic leadership? Not every soldier is born to lead. Some
soldiers are bad decision makers, poor time managers, or just unable to inspire confidence in their
fellow soldiers. There is nothing wrong with being a follower if you are a competent individual who
can perform the given tasks. A NCO who cannot step up and lead is not a toxic leader, they are a bad
leader. With education and training NCOs with poor leaderships skills develop into competent leaders.
Toxic leadership is a result of narcissistic leaders, individuals who have an

Middle Childhood Standing Out
Middle childhood fitting in or standing out Middle childhood is a crucial time when children start to
establish their own sense of identity, independence, and start to be more involved in the world beyond
their family. When children get older there values and behaviors start to change. Many children try to
be individuals, but most of the time it makes them feel vulnerable, so they tend to conform to a group.
During middle childhood cognitive changes begin to transform a child s mind and body therefor
having stability at home and in school is crucial. Vygotsky realized that children learn from one

Siopis In Face The Drink
Penny Siopis and Egon Schiele influenced the use of colour in my piece Face the Drink . Siopis
influenced it by her lithograph Model Prisoners , which showed me how expressive colour really is.
Egon Shciele influenced my work, by the way he uses distorted figures and faces to express emotion,
as well as his use of arbitrary colour. Both Schiele and Siopis has taught me many different techniques
that I am excited to use in the future. Penny Siopis influenced my drawing style by the use of her
emotive colours (predominately red) and her semi distorted faces, from her Pinky Pinky series. In her
lithograph Model Prisoners a lot of emotion is shown through her use of red, to symbolising intense
passion, aggression, and courage. My goal for my piece Face the Drink would be, like Siopis, to show
emotion through the colour and distortion of tone. My concept behind Face the Drink is to express
alcohol abuse and how it makes one feel, by simply using colour to make viewers feel the dizzy effect
alcohol gives people. My main aim is to fill the wall with my distorted, colourful faces to make people
feel over whelmed and uncomfortable. Siopis taught me that a message can still be strong without the
use of many colours, but in my case I felt like my piece needed many colours to portray the message.

Analysis Of Casablanca By Humphrey Bogart
Casablanca is a film set and made in the 1940s. A person watching this film in 2016 might think that
there would be no way he or she would like this film. With the film set in the 1940s, in black and
white, and the dialogue not being something one might see in 2016 or find interesting or good.
Casablanca is a good film because it has good actors and acting, a complex plot, and action highly
involved.
The actors in Casablanca create great emotional ties for the audience to connect with each of them.
Humphrey Bogart does a great job as Rick Blaine; especially in his demeanor to stay distant to
everyone, including the audience. Bogart does a great job as well by pulling at one s heart strings to
stay as emotionless as possible throughout the entire film, but one can see deep down his true feelings
and intentions, especially towards Ilsa and at the end of the film when he makes the ultimate sacrifice
to not use the letters of transit on himself, but instead on Ilsa and her husband. Ilsa Lund, played by
Ingrid Bergman, showed the audience pure emotion from the beginning. She made the audience
sympathize with her and wanted her to triumph along with her husband to get out of Casablanca. But
the audience also saw the great onscreen chemistry performed by Bogart and Bergman, so one was ...

Artemisia Gentileschi Essay
Artemisia Gentileschi (1593 1652 4) was a female painter who has depicted a scene of the story in the
Book of Esther in her painting Esther before Ahasuerus. She was born in Rome, Italy as the daughter
of the painter Orazio Gentileschi (1563 1639), and this is most certainly the way how she came into
contact with the artistic world (Papi). In 1612, when her promising career had only just begun, a long
trial for the rape of Artemisia had serious repercussions for her reputation, even though the culprit,
Agostino Tassi, was convicted (Papi). After an arranged but reparative marriage with the brother of a
family associate immediately after the trial, the couple moved to Florence, where Artemisia was

depicted by Artemisia Gentileschi. Her work includes depictions of biblical heroines and strong
biblical female figures victimized by men and women having power over men, like Judith, Lucretia,
Susanna and the Elder, and Bathsheba (Kaufmann, pp. 165). Many scholars have attributed the event
of the rape to explain the recurring motives in her paintings, however, as Cohen states in her paper,
this conclusion should not be made so easily (Cohen, pp. 48). In an extensive research of documents
documenting the trial concerning Artemisia s rape, examining the event from a seventeenth century
perspective, she came to the conclusion that the event was significant for her development, but that it
did not define her life, as some would suggest (Cohen, pp. 74). Cohen believes that if Artemisia,
indeed, consciously painted feminist images, its roots cannot only have been in the event of the rape
and its aftermath (Cohen, pp.

one line, there is no mention of international development of the attempted ending of FGM. I

the United States or United Nations dealing with this issue? What are more specific plans made by
international organizations like the UN doing to follow their general statements? I also understand that

How Does Love Cause Conflict In A Midsummer Night s Dream
In the play, A Midsummer Night s Dream, William Shakespeare tries to tell the readers that love can
often sway people into performing illogical decisions. First of all, love can cause conflict amongst
people. This is shown when two of the main characters, Demetrius and Lysander, were fighting with
each other for Hermia s love. Demetrius scorns: Relent, sweet Hermia and Lysander, yield. Thy crazed
title to my certain right. (1.1.91 92). The conflict between the two men created tension amongst
themselves, Hermia, Helena, and the Noblemen of Athens. Moreover, love is also shown to cause
betrayal amongst friends. In the first act of the play, Demetrius was in love with Hermia; and Helena,
her best friend, was willing to betray her just for his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Furthermore, affection amongst people can require some sacrifices to be made. Since the Duke of
Athens (Theseus) strictly forbade Lysander and Helena to be wed, they had to find another way to do
so. Lysander whispers: {To Helena} If thou lovest me then, steal forth thy father s house tomorrow
night. And in the wood, a league without the town...There I will stay for thee. (1.1.163 168). Instead of
talking to the Duke about their situation, they decided that leaving Athens and their things behind for
the cause of love would be a better plan. Likewise, anger between people has also been proven to be
caused by love. When the magical fairy Puck applied the love potion on Demetrius and Lysander, they
both ended up falling in love with Helena, which threw Hermia into a rage. Hermia yells: You thief of
love! What, have you come by night and stolen my love s heart from him? (3.2.290 291). Hermia had
thought that Helena had stolen Lysander s affection from her, enraging her and thus creating an even

Different securities are expected to generate different returns. WACC is calculated taking into account
the relative weights of each component of the capital structure. Broadly speaking, the assets of a
company are financed by either debt or equity. WACC is the average of the cost of each of these
sources of financing weighted by their respective usage in the given situation. By taking a weighted
average, we can see how much interest the company has to pay for every dollar it borrows. A firm s
WACC is the overall required return on the firm as a whole. It is the appropriate discount rate to use

Contemporary Issues In China Essay
The economy of China currently stand as the second largest economy in the world only beaten by that
of the United States of America. However, the Chinese GDP stands also to be rising fast up 12.4% in
dollar terms was recorded in 2013. For various other nations, such a figure would be much of a stellar
year. Example is the United States of America managed merely 3.2% in the fourth quarter of last year
compared to China which had registered 18% or more each year from 2006 to 2011 (Gough, January
19, 2016). Nonetheless, such massive growth of the nation stand widely clouded by a dark sky of
biting inequality and massive concerns of environmental dilapidation. Biting human inequality and
Environmental pollution has been for long time and continues to be a serious problem in China. These
two closely tied problems are evident mostly in education, health, economic situations, politics and the
Chinese labor which is more of Modern Slavery (Chen, 2005). Putting these to context, the themes
most relating to these Chinese contemporary issues are those of human and environment and
inequality. Consequently, this paper seeks to look at the historical roots of environmental dilapidation
and human inequality as a contemporary issue through time and across space paying attention to
China and other world destinations.
Contemporary Issues
Through the progression of world history, society progressively grow to become more and more
sensitive to concerns of equality and human right focus owed

selfish, greedy, and only interested in himself, not another life. Sometimes the respondents become so
angry with the druggist that they say that he ought to be put in jail (Gibbs et al., 1983, pp. 26 29, 40
42). A typical stage 3 response is that of Don, age 13:
It was really the druggist s fault, he was unfair, trying to overcharge and letting someone die. Heinz
loved his wife and wanted to save her. I think anyone would. I don t think they would put him in jail.
The judge would look at all sides, and see that the druggist was charging too much. (Kohlberg, 1963,
p. 25)
We see that Don defines the issue in terms of the actors character traits and motives. He talks about the
loving husband, the unfair druggist, and the understanding judge. His answer deserves the label
conventional morality because it assumes that the attitude expressed would be shared by the entire
community anyone would be right to do what Heinz did (Kohlberg, 1963, p. 25).
As mentioned earlier, there are similarities between Kohlberg s first three stages and Piaget s two
stages. In both sequences there is a shift from unquestioning obedience to a relativistic outlook and to
a concern for good motives. For Kohlberg, however, these shifts occur in three stages rather than two.
Stage 4. Maintaining the Social Order.

  • 2. Theory of Demand and Supply 1. Supply and Demand Economists Are a Joke? ________________________________________ A smarty pants old story says that if you want a learned economist, all you have to do is get a parrot and train the bird to squawk supply and demand in response to every question. Not fair, but ... It s true that the theory of supply and demand is a central part of economics. It is widely applicable, and also is a model of the way economists try to think most problems through, even when the theory of supply and demand is not applicable. A Theory of Price ________________________________________ What is it? The theory of supply and demand is a theory of price and output in competitive markets. Adam Smith had argued that each good or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... You have to have both. Accordingly, we will first analyze competitive markets, by discussing demand and supply separately. Then we will try to put them back together (synthesize them) in order to understand the working of competitive markets. Thus, in the next few pages, we will look at demand supply equilibrium of demand and supply First, demand. Demand ________________________________________ In economics, we need to use terms a little more carefully than they are sometimes used in ordinary discussions. In general use, Demand is a word that can have more than one meaning, but in microeconomics we define it more carefully so that it has only one meaning. Here is the definition: Definition: Demand Demand is the relationship between price and quantity demanded for a particular good and service in particular circumstances. For each price the demand relationship tells the quantity the buyers want to buy at that corresponding price. The quantity the buyers want to buy at a particular price is called the Quantity Demanded. The key point is to distinguish between demand (the relationship) and quantity demanded. That distinction is important for microeconomics, although people often do not make it in ordinary discussion. Why do we define demand in this specialized

  • 4. Egyptian Pyramids And The Pyramids The Egyptian pyramids were an important aspect of the Egyptian life and culture constructed around 2500 BCE with their geographical location being at the West bank of the River Nile. The three pyramids on the Giza plateau were built in a span of three generations by three Pharaohs namely Khafre, Menkaure and Khufu. These monuments are unsurpassed in terms of height and mass with the architects of the pyramids building them in a way that they could face the setting sun as they served as a resting place for the dead. In stead of that, each pyramid acted as a royal mortuary which included a temple on its base and a causeway which was made out of stone leading from the east of the plateau. These temples were used by the living to honor the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The completion of the upper hemisphere of the Pantheon is connected to a hypothetical lower hemisphere that touches the central point of the floor. This central point is referred to as the Oculus and has an opening of about 8.3 meters wide at the top of the cupola that serves as the only source of light for the building as shown in figure 1.1. Its basic design was devised in a way whereby the portico had columns attached to a rotunda with a dome shape. An intermediate block was put in between the rectilinear portico and the round rotunda to help in transition between the two. Its walls are made from concrete that is brick faced which was witnessed in most ancient buildings and the Roman aqua ducts. The concrete of the dome was graded into 6 layers with the architects mixing scoria and a low density volcanic rock at the top of the dome as derived from Tod Marder and Mark Wilson. Scholars have indicated that Egypt was a kingdom formed and united under a single ruler in which the government was centralized thus enhancing engagement between the political elite and the citizens. Earlier Egyptian Pharaohs had absolute power owing to the fact that they appointed members of the royal family to prestigious positions but with time the government positions became hereditary and most of the district ... • 5. Black Death Of The 14th Century Analysis The Black Death of the fourteenth century was an extremely deadly pandemic that killed off around half of Europe s population. It acted quickly, killing the people who contracted it within three days once they displayed any symptoms. It s no surprise that the people who were affected reacted the way they did. In terms of the responses, those of the Black Death and those of Zika, Ebola, and HIV AIDS were actually very similar in how the fear the outbreaks produced overwhelmed the masses into being overprotective and paranoid for their own wellbeing. According to Giovanni Boccaccio s The Decameron, hundreds of Florentine citizens would die daily, and those who have not met that fate yet would have to walk along the streets inhaling putrid scents ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... HIV AIDS was a sexually transmitted disease that preyed on the gay community in many areas of the world. No one had an idea of what it was and how it worked; everyone simply relied on the fact that once you had it, you were as good as dead. On top of sex being somewhat of a taboo topic in American society, there was also a significant amount of discrimination towards the gay communities, and once it was known that it was common because of members having several partners, HIV became more of a stereotype. Gay members were shunned and isolated even more than they already were, with people not wanting to even be near them. Fear was not the only factor that affected society and fostered hostility towards others; the pre existent stigma against gay people always played a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Object Permanence The third time I visited Vera, I started testing her understanding of object permanence. I did the same test as last time, with putting her teddy under the blanket. Right when I put the bear under the blanket, Vera reached under and retrieved the teddy. Since she was able to do that, I tried the A not B error. When I put the teddy under the first blanket, she got it. Then when I put it under the second blanket, she looked under the first blanket. This confirmed Piagets theory of the A not B error (Crosby, 108). I also noticed that Vera enjoys solitary play. If I am in the room with her and sitting on the couch, she will gladly play with her toys alone. This is not an issue at her age. If she continued this past age five or six, then it could be a red flag of something such as anxiety according to Burgess, Rubin, Cheah, and Nelson (Crosby, 489). She also responded to simple requests. For example if you asked for a high five, she would do it. When I started singing When You re Happy and You know it, she could clap. The next thing I did was giving Vera her bottle, and to my surprise, she now holds the bottle with one hand. In addition, I noticed that she was eating most all normal foods now. She had a peanut butter sandwich cut up in very small pieces. The last thing I did was ask ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is also harder to measure her social development of Vera because she is not yet talking and does not have friends to measure the social ability. She smiles and babbles at people but that is mostly it. In addition, it is more difficult to measure her mental development because she cannot talk yet and understand her mental state. The only way we can understand her emotions is through her face and body language. Lastly, there is limited information about things such as key life events because she is so ... • 7. Themes in Blue Velvet Exploring the Dark Side: Contrasting Themes in Blue Velvet The subconscious psyche is one of the most fascinating and almost completely inexplicable aspects of human behavior. Even more intriguing than merely the subconscious is the notion of a darker, more repressed side that many individuals refuse to acknowledge exists within them. In David Lynch s film Blue Velvet, the director attempts to explore the psyche of a young man named Jeffrey Beaumont, most notably the clash between his darker side and good side for the first time in his life. The opening sequence is used by Lynch as a metaphor for Jeffrey s state of mind throughout the entire film, as Jeffrey realizes he has a dark side yet is trying (most of the time) to suppress it. The town of Lumberton, like Jeffrey, is an idealized version of what America and Americans should be like and yet, much like Jeffrey s mind, it is full of dark secrets and contradictions. One aspect of Jeffrey s psyche being explored is the notion of his battle between innocent love for a young girl and the animalistic lust he possesses for an older, more mature woman. The good or innocent side of Jeffrey is personified in the character of Sandy. Sandy is often depicted wearing light colors, with blue eyes and perfectly brushed blonde hair. When Sandy is first introduced into the film, she enters through utter darkness, stepping out of the shadows and into the light in a medium shot. Lynch follows this up with a long reverse tracking two shot in which Jeffrey and Sandy make small talk and innocently flirt with one another. Dorothy s introduction into the film, however, is quite different. The film first truly introduces the audience and Jeffrey to Dorothy with a subjective shot from her closet. • 9. Banning The Freedom Of The Press Although some may consider these books controversial or inappropriate, many English classes have required us to read these books. Like the teachers that assigned us these books, I believe that even controversial books can ultimately boost, not deter, our educational wealth. I oppose book banning for three main reasons. First, I believe that education should be open to everyone. Everyone should have an opportunity to read any literature of their choosing and form his or her own opinions based on the reading. Micah Issitt lists three basic rights covered under the freedom of the press: the right to publish, the right to confidentiality of sources, and the right of citizens to access the products of the press. My second reason specifically addresses the last right stating that citizens should have access to the press. The government should not restrict books from being published or interfere into personal affairs as this is an infringement of the First Amendment. Finally, I believe that parents should monitor what their own children read, but not have the authority to ban other children from reading these novels. For these reasons, I conclude that the government should play no role in the issue what citizens do and do not read, and that book restriction should remain a solely private matter. hile I agree that parents should play an active role in educating their children and as their primary guardians, have the legal right to monitor what their children read, I disagree that ... • 14. Crime And Social Control Theory Essay Social control theory refers the ideas that society is responsible for maintaining law abiding citizens and/or producing deviant behavior (Hagan, 2016). The textbook generalizes that social control theories view crime as taking place when social control or bonds to society break down (Hagan, 2016, p. 170). This is concluded by the theories of four theorists Walter Reckless, Travis Hirschi, Michael Gottfredson, and John Hagan who investigated and theorized different philosophies that explain the relationship between crime and social control (Hagan, 2016). Reckless s theory of containment is one of the most prominent and earliest models of social control theory (Hagan, 2016). Reckless theorized that individuals have various social controls (containments) that assist them in resisting pressures that draw them toward criminality (Hagan, 2016, p. 170). This theory holds that social factors and external or internal pressures influence individuals to either abide by the law or produce criminality (Hagan, 2016). A second theory is Hirschi s social bond theory that states delinquency takes place when a person s bonds to society are weakened or broken, thus reducing personal stakes in conformity (Hagan, 2016, p. 170). Hirschi posited that the bonds consist of four components: Commitment, belief, involvement, and attachment (Hagan, 2016). Commitment refers to an individual s responsibilities, such as a job or providing for a family (Hagan, 2016). It states if an individual ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Coetzee s Waiting for the Barbarians 3.1 Critical Discourse Analysis In Coetzee s slim novel Waiting for the Barbarians, the author focuses on the abiding problems of man s malicious treatment of men and women. During the composition of Coetzee s third novel, the anti apartheid activist Stephen Biko was murdered in prison. The subsequent media coverage of the public inquiry provided Coetzee with his theme for Waiting for the Barbarians; The effects of totalitarianism and torture on the life of liberal conscience [and] the simultaneous processes of distancing and homecoming (Attwell 201). This literary cocktail invented by Coetzee in Waiting for the Barbarians is incredibly powerful: an intricate merger of cultural Otherness, an idiosyncratic sexual desire involving a tortured body, and an Empire teetering on the brink of collapse. What is more, the Magistrate s decision to bring the barbarian girl back to her own Place, has far reaching implications for himself, and subsequently positions him upon his return to the frontier, in the role of the Other: There is not one face among them that I recognize, their eyes are stony, they do not answer my questions but march us back like prisoners through the open gates (Coetzee, WftB 82). During his incarceration, the Magistrate has ample opportunity for self reflection, or more eloquently put his self recriminating psychology; I wanted to do what was right, I wanted to make reparation: I will not deny this decent impulse, however mixed with more questionable motives: there must always be a place for penance and reparation (Coetzee, WftB 88). The old Magistrate feels like he is turning into an animal and eventually escapes from captivity, but having nowhere else to go he returns to his cell. Finally, Colonel Joll returns from his military expedition into the barbaric lands, bringing back twelve miserable captives, to prove to his children that the barbarians are real (Coetzee, WftB 113). Siopis influenced it by her lithograph Model Prisoners , which showed me how expressive colour really is. Egon Shciele influenced my work, by the way he uses distorted figures and faces to express emotion, as well as his use of arbitrary colour. Both Schiele and Siopis has taught me many different techniques that I am excited to use in the future. Penny Siopis influenced my drawing style by the use of her emotive colours (predominately red) and her semi distorted faces, from her Pinky Pinky series. In her lithograph Model Prisoners a lot of emotion is shown through her use of red, to symbolising intense passion, aggression, and courage. My goal for my piece Face the Drink would be, like Siopis, to show emotion through the colour and distortion of tone. My concept behind Face the Drink is to express alcohol abuse and how it makes one feel, by simply using colour to make viewers feel the dizzy effect alcohol gives people. My main aim is to fill the wall with my distorted, colourful faces to make people feel over whelmed and uncomfortable. Siopis taught me that a message can still be strong without the use of many colours, but in my case I felt like my piece needed many colours to portray the message. • 31. Analysis Of Casablanca By Humphrey Bogart Casablanca is a film set and made in the 1940s. A person watching this film in 2016 might think that there would be no way he or she would like this film. With the film set in the 1940s, in black and white, and the dialogue not being something one might see in 2016 or find interesting or good. Casablanca is a good film because it has good actors and acting, a complex plot, and action highly involved. The actors in Casablanca create great emotional ties for the audience to connect with each of them. Humphrey Bogart does a great job as Rick Blaine; especially in his demeanor to stay distant to everyone, including the audience. Bogart does a great job as well by pulling at one s heart strings to stay as emotionless as possible throughout the entire film, but one can see deep down his true feelings and intentions, especially towards Ilsa and at the end of the film when he makes the ultimate sacrifice to not use the letters of transit on himself, but instead on Ilsa and her husband. Ilsa Lund, played by Ingrid Bergman, showed the audience pure emotion from the beginning. She was born in Rome, Italy as the daughter of the painter Orazio Gentileschi (1563 1639), and this is most certainly the way how she came into contact with the artistic world (Papi). In 1612, when her promising career had only just begun, a long trial for the rape of Artemisia had serious repercussions for her reputation, even though the culprit, Agostino Tassi, was convicted (Papi). After an arranged but reparative marriage with the brother of a family associate immediately after the trial, the couple moved to Florence, where Artemisia was notably more successful with her work (Papi). Esther is not the only biblical female figure depicted by Artemisia Gentileschi. Her work includes depictions of biblical heroines and strong biblical female figures victimized by men and women having power over men, like Judith, Lucretia, Susanna and the Elder, and Bathsheba (Kaufmann, pp. 165). Many scholars have attributed the event of the rape to explain the recurring motives in her paintings, however, as Cohen states in her paper, this conclusion should not be made so easily (Cohen, pp. 48). In an extensive research of documents documenting the trial concerning Artemisia s rape, examining the event from a seventeenth century perspective, she came to the conclusion that the event was significant for her development, but that it did not define her life, as some would suggest (Cohen, pp. 74). Cohen believes that if Artemisia, indeed, consciously painted feminist images, its roots cannot only have been in the event of the rape and its aftermath (Cohen, pp. ... How Does Love Cause Conflict In A Midsummer Night s Dream In the play, A Midsummer Night s Dream, William Shakespeare tries to tell the readers that love can often sway people into performing illogical decisions. First of all, love can cause conflict amongst people. This is shown when two of the main characters, Demetrius and Lysander, were fighting with each other for Hermia s love. Demetrius scorns: Relent, sweet Hermia and Lysander, yield. Thy crazed title to my certain right. (1.1.91 92). The conflict between the two men created tension amongst themselves, Hermia, Helena, and the Noblemen of Athens. Moreover, love is also shown to cause betrayal amongst friends. Instead of talking to the Duke about their situation, they decided that leaving Athens and their things behind for the cause of love would be a better plan. Likewise, anger between people has also been proven to be caused by love. When the magical fairy Puck applied the love potion on Demetrius and Lysander, they both ended up falling in love with Helena, which threw Hermia into a rage. Hermia yells: You thief of love! What, have you come by night and stolen my love s heart from him? (3.2.290 291). WACC is the average of the cost of each of these sources of financing weighted by their respective usage in the given situation. By taking a weighted average, we can see how much interest the company has to pay for every dollar it borrows. A firm s WACC is the overall required return on the firm as a whole. However, the Chinese GDP stands also to be rising fast up 12.4% in dollar terms was recorded in 2013. For various other nations, such a figure would be much of a stellar year. Example is the United States of America managed merely 3.2% in the fourth quarter of last year compared to China which had registered 18% or more each year from 2006 to 2011 (Gough, January 19, 2016). Nonetheless, such massive growth of the nation stand widely clouded by a dark sky of biting inequality and massive concerns of environmental dilapidation. Biting human inequality and Environmental pollution has been for long time and continues to be a serious problem in China. These two closely tied problems are evident mostly in education, health, economic situations, politics and the Chinese labor which is more of Modern Slavery (Chen, 2005). Putting these to context, the themes most relating to these Chinese contemporary issues are those of human and environment and inequality. Consequently, this paper seeks to look at the historical roots of environmental dilapidation and human inequality as a contemporary issue through time and across space paying attention to China and other world destinations. To the Heinz dilemma, the child typically says that Heinz was wrong to steal the drug because It s against the law, or It s bad to steal, as if this were all there were to it. If Heinz s motives were good, the druggist s were bad. The druggist, stage 3 subjects emphasize, was selfish, greedy, and only interested in himself, not another life. Sometimes the respondents become so angry with the druggist that they say that he ought to be put in jail (Gibbs et al., 1983, pp. 26 29, 40 42). A typical stage 3 response is that of Don, age 13: It was really the druggist s fault, he was unfair, trying to overcharge and letting someone die. Heinz loved his wife and wanted to save her. I think anyone would. I don t think they would put him in jail. The judge would look at all sides, and see that the druggist was charging too much. (Kohlberg, 1963, p. 25) We see that Don defines the issue in terms of the actors character traits and motives. He talks about the loving husband, the unfair druggist, and the understanding judge. His answer deserves the label conventional morality because it assumes that the attitude expressed would be shared by the entire community anyone would be right to do what Heinz did (Kohlberg, 1963, p. 25). As mentioned earlier, there are similarities between Kohlberg s first three stages and Piaget s two stages.
