The Rosetta Stone Essay
The Rosetta Stone
In 1799, when Napoleon s army was dismantling a wall in Rashid, Egypt, they discovered the Rosetta
Stone. Little did they know that this 11 inch thick piece of rock would be one of the greatest
discoveries in history! It contained Egyptian scripture, with Greek also on the stone. This was used to
decode the once lost Egyptian writing system. Before the 1800 s, attempts at trying to uncover the
secrets held by the ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics found on walls inside numerous tombs were
useless. The pictures were falsely believed to be symbolic, representing some sort of object or idea.
Something soon changed all of this misconception. 1799 was the year of a great breakthrough in
Egyptology. French troops, under ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another man who devoted many years of his life to studying the stone was Jean Francois
Champollion. After many years of perseverance, Champollion finally translated the stone in 1822. He
accomplished this feat by first recognizing that hieroglyphs were not symbols, but instead were
associated with phonetics, as Thomas Young had proved. (Andrews 166) His first major breakthrough
in his studies was in 1808, when he resolved those fifteen signs of the demotic script related with
alphabetic letters from the Coptic language. From this he concluded that Coptic language must be
based on the remnants of the last of the ancient Egyptian language, and written with the Greek
alphabet, which is why it was readable to Champollion and other scholars researching the stone. Also,
that the hieroglyphic text was a translation of the Greek, not the reverse, as had been previously
believed. By 1818, Champollion had successfully concluded that though some signs were basically
ideograms, many of the glyphs had phonetic value, meaning the ancient Egyptian script was at least
partially alphabetic. (Giblin 83) He came to this conclusion after referring back to three other different
forms of Egyptian writing and also using Coptic as a reference. Recognizing the name Ptolemy and
Cleopatra in the Greek and demotic sections of the stone allowed him to identify those same names in
hieroglyphics. Still wondering, he didn t think that hieroglyphs were

Birth Control Access to Teens
Formal Outline
Topic: Birth control access to teenage girls
Thesis statement: Although teenage girls are prohibited from purchasing birth control, laws should be
implemented to allow access to birth control as a means of managing safer sex, preventing the health
risks and guarding them from the cycle of poverty.
1. Reasons for not allowing birth control to be given to teenagers A. It encourages sexual activity (Sex
with many partners promiscuity) B. Abstinence should be promoted 1. It is 100 percent effective 2.
Sex is not for teenagers

But they get the message that sex is risky. They begin to see sex as a sensitive issue that should be
taken very seriously because it involves life changing consequences. Additionally, a study published in
the Journal of Adolescent Health found that teaching about contraception and making them available
to teenagers was not associated with increased risk of sexual activity as many abstinence only
supporters have insisted. Therefore, the availability of birth control along with education about it does
not increase sexual activity but informs teenagers to practice good decision making for their bodies
and their future.
The opponents of birth control to teens overlook the fact that providing birth control to teenage girls
would make sex much safer. Certainly, the unsteady rate of teenage pregnancies would decrease. In
previous times, girls between the ages of 16 17 would get pregnant unintentionally. However, in this
era, 13 and 14 year old girls are having babies teens who are completely unprepared to give birth and
raise a child. In these instances, if the child is not given up for adoption, the responsibility usually
becomes that of the parents. In addition, when teenagers are protected from unwanted pregnancies the
number of teen abortions taking place each year could be reduced significantly. According to
Guttmacher.org, some states in the U.S have reported that 50 percent of pregnant teens receive an
abortion. Not only is this a costly procedure, but it is also

Analysis Of Proust And The Squid By Maryanne Wolf
# Essay 3
*Proust and the Squid,* by Professor Maryanne Wolf, unveils and celebrates reading, one of the single
most remarkable inventions in history. (3) While it might seem absurd today, reading was invented
only a few thousand years ago, and consequently it has had an undeniably colossal influence on
humanity. Imagining a world without text seems unbelievable now, but for the better part of humanity
this medium of communication was nonexistent. In this book,
[Wolf] hope[s] to push [the readers] gently toward reconsidering things [they] might long have taken
for granted such as how natural it is for a child to learn to read. In the evolution of our brain s capacity
to learn, the act of reading is not natural, with consequences both ... Show more content on

Far from being a one dimensional action, reading depends on hundreds of interweaving threads and
neurons in the human brain. In an infinity loop, whenever a new experience occurs, the human brain
constructs new connections among already existing structures. These new structures enhance the
action of doing the original, causative experience; then those same structures strengthen, and so forth.
This positive feedback loop in known as *neural plasticity,* and is, in short, the basis for much of who
we are, and who we might become. (3)
Reading is an intellectual feat of monstrous proportions. It changes the brain, and thus [it is a]
powerful mirror of... how the brain learns anything new. (4) To better comprehend its magnitude, Wolf
divides her work into three topics: the history of reading, how a modern child learns to read, and the
case when a child struggles to learn to read. These three sections, when taken together, provide a
holistic and nuanced view of the act of reading, making the reader appreciate the things once taken for
granted. Out of the three sections, it is the beginning section, which illustrates the invention of reading
in history, that is most

The Most Bizarre Cults in the World
Cults basically refer to groups that happen to believe in cultures and beliefs even if people are
responding positively or negatively. There are numerous cults that are either public or private but even
so, they managed to be known by people and convince to be powerful enough to take down anything.
Here are the most bizarre cults in the world.

The Manson Family cult originated with Charles Manson, an abandoned boy that was sold in
exchange for beer. In 1934, Kathleen Maddox was an alcoholic woman that sold her very son for beer.

Disaster programs are particularly important in bringing stability back to families and allowing the

Boys and Girls by Alice Munro
Society tries to place many rules upon an individual as to what is acceptable and what is not . One
must decide for themselves whether to give in to these pressures and conform to society s projected
image, or rather to resist and maintain their own desired self image. In the story Boys and Girls by
Alice Munro, Munro suggests that this conflict is internal and external and a persons experiences in
life will determine which of these forces will conquer. In terms of the unnamed protagonist s
experiences in the story, it becomes clear just how strong the pressure of society to conform really is,
as it overcomes and replaces the girl s self image.
In order to better understand the conflict, first we must define what conformity and self ... Show more

Although seemingly unimportant to the storyline, the presence of the foxes and horses play a major
role in the story, as they symbolize the sides of the conflict between conformity and self image. The
foxes represent conformity; they all live in the same routine, are controlled by others in their
environment, and are both literally and metaphorically locked in a cage. The narrator s environment is
much like the foxes, controlling. Her parent s subtle hints, whether it be her mother s comments or her
father s tasks, are slowly but surely enclosing on her like a cage, and will soon trap her.
The horses however, try as hard as they can, much like the narrator, to roam free for as long as
possible, seemingly unaware of the forces acting against them in an attempt to deny them their
freedom. For the horses, this force was the narrator s father, who felt that they had a purpose to be
served, in the narrator s case, it was her mother s thought that she had a place to be served as well;
inside the home. In the case of the foxes and horses, neither win, as they both die in the end, much like
people. However, although the horse s lives end much sooner, they get to experience something that
the foxes do not, and that is freedom. The protagonist s desire for freedom is clearly desirable as she
expresses her resistance to conform to societies ideals by continuing to do things against the norm,
thinking that by such measures [she] kept

Chapter 4 of Veiled Sentiments
Chapter four of Veiled Sentiments showed why sexual modesty is essential to a women s honor. The
Bedouins are much more enthusiastic with the birth of a boy over a birth of a girl. These people would
rejoice for a boy and mourn for a girl. I understand this is their way of life and this is within their
culture but if girls were never born, then who would give birth to any boys later on in life? Men are
very important to a tribe because its strength measured by its number of men. As a whole, women and
men share this preference for the birth of a son, but women are very much so emotionally connected
with their daughters and rely on them to help with housework. There are various symbols for both

Once becoming a pre medic student, the most dreaded experience would be the dissection of cadavers.
The memory was enriched into her veins, her eyes suspiciously watching the crowed wearing smiles.
Her father wiping away a small tear, her mother clutching to her handkerchief and her troublesome
little brother making faces in the midst of the stone faced canvases, the oath had been simple. She is a
thing of light, of airiness and joy; she swore to protect, and to preserve. No matter ethnicity, sexuality,
gender; no factor shall drag her from the common cause. Yet, here she was...placing her fingers
through the soft gloves. An erratic mother watching from the window, and an exhausted father tightly
sealing his eyes; Lourdes watched the unconscious child of innocence sleep soundly. It was now or
never. She readied the needle, pressing into her light skin. Emotionlessly, she observed the red liquid
fill the syringe. Robotically, she placed the syringe into the equipment...the lights began to dazzle
before her. The screen before her lit up with a phantasmagoria of colours. Her body had been marble,
until her eyes cast upon that little spike. Every pent up emotion she had withheld pushed to the frontier
of her mind, she felt her body shudder as she fell against the bed railing. Let me through! The erratic
mother screamed, pushing through the barricade of bodies. The spike stunned her to the ground, it
could not be. No... it was that broken whisper that pulled Lourdes out of the

Teen Mothers And The Rates Of Teen Pregnancy
According to the National Institute of Health (NIH), The United States ranks first among developed
nations in rates of both teenage pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases (Stanger Hall, Kathrin F.,
and David W. Hall, paragraph 1). In 2015, there were a total of 229,715 babies born to teen moms
between the ages of 15 19 (Reproductive Health: Teen Pregnancy, paragraph 1). It is not just
becoming a problem; it has been a problem for a while. It does not help the problem when there are
reality television shows making it look glamorous to be a young mom. Shows like Teen Mom and 16
and Pregnant makes it seem like no matter what goes wrong, everything always ends happily ever
after. Unfortunately, for most people (teen moms included) life is not a fairy tale, not everyone gets a
happily ever after.
There are many reasons why we need to decrease teen pregnancy rates. The first of which is the
economic costs. According to the CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) In 2010, teen
pregnancy and childbirth accounted for at least $9.4 billion in costs to U.S. taxpayers for increased
health care and foster care, increased incarceration rates among children of teen parents, and lost tax
revenue because of lower educational attainment and income among teen mothers (Reproductive
Health: Teen Pregnancy, paragraph 9).
Having a screaming child around does not make it easy study. Teenage parents have a significantly

Time Capsule History
In 1795 Paul Revere and Samuel Adams placed in the cornerstone of the Massachusetts Statehouse a
time capsule. It was a small box, an inch and a half deep and about half the size of a piece of printer
paper. Two hundred and twenty years pass neighborhoods are built, colleges, schools, churches; the
Civil War, and its draft riots, begin and end. Flight is conquered; the automatic rifle is invented the

It must have caught the plumber by surprise to find a ten pound time capsule from the first years of the
United States. Lodged tightly in stone, it took workers seven hours to remove the box, and before a
special ceremony held for the opening, another four to loosen the screws holding it fast.
Wearing protective gloves, members of the historical society found newspapers, coins, and even a
rectangular silver plate engraved by Revere himself inside the capsule. The contents of the box were
well preserved, and they provided a rare and candid glimpse at our not so distant past. The Samuel
Adams and Paul Revere Time Capsule is to this day the oldest time capsule to have been discovered in
the United States, and since 1795, certainly, the time capsule craze has exploded, and with good
reason.

C. S. Lewis Mere Christianity
I remember when the Christian faith finally began making sense to me. By the end of my reading of
the first book of C.S. Lewis book Mere Christianity, Right and Wrong as a Clue to the Meaning of the
Universe, I began to feel a spark of faith and hope. Lewis apologetic is geared primarily toward
nonbelievers, and discusses social law as evidence for God, as well as a short glimpse of the Christian
faith. Lewis uses the existence of what we a call a conscious, or the notion that there are things that
people should and should not do to point to the existence of a higher power. Lewis argues that
everyone has a inherent sense of right and wrong. This is observable through a man s feeling of how
people ought to behave. One should not confuse moral law with instinct, because if there are two
conflicting instincts within a person, Moral Law will point to the weaker of the two instincts. Impulses
in themselves, Lewis explains, are like keys on a piano. Neither key is good or bad on its own, but all
the right keys within the correct context. Moral Law tells use which keys to play. The Moral Law is
not something any person on earth or any society has created, but rather something man feels pressing

wrestle with it mentally as well as spiritually. He also showed me, through the first part of the book,
the dire need of humanity for a savior. Human law is a sore substitute for the divine moral law, and all
of our goodness is a mere shadow of how good we were meant to

College Can Wait
Taking a gap year between high school and college is becoming a rapidly developing trend amongst
students in the United Kingdom and United States over the last decade. The extreme pressure from the
four years spent in high school leaves students drained and needing to re energize before facing an
even more rigorous course load in college. A gap year is the perfect solution as students take time off
with a purpose before furthering their education. A gap year is a structured period of time between
high school and college when students take a break from formal education to increase self awareness,
learn from different cultures, and experiment for possible careers. As defined by Andrew Jones in his
thesis paper for the University of London, a gap year is, any period of time between 3 and 24 months
which an individual takes out of formal education, training or the workplace, and where the time out
sits in the context of a longer career trajectory (Jones 8). Students spend time away from home
traveling, volunteering, interning or working in an unfamiliar area to gain new experiences. This
period is ideally a phase for students to explore the world and gain valuable life skills and a mature
understanding while transitioning into independence. Its purpose is for a student to find out more
about oneself, and clarify future career pursuits before entering college. It is a time in which students

What Are The Risks Associated With Mars Colonization
The Risks Associated With Mars Colonization
For 28 months NASA s Curiosity rover explored Mars and provided data for scientific research. The
reason why this research is being conducted is because NASA wishes to colonize Mars, which means
to come to settle among and establish political control over (the indigenous people of an area). In
order to do this we would need to terraform Mars which means to (especially in science fiction)
transform (a planet) so as to resemble the earth, especially so that it can support human life. The risks
associated with space exploration for colonization outweigh the benefits because of the massive
amount of time it takes for the entire Mars mission process and major health concerns. The amount of

The Mexican State Of Coahuila Y Tejas
American settlement in Texas began with the encouragement of first the Spanish, and then Mexican,
governments. In the summer of 1820 Moses Austin, a bankrupt 59 year old Missourian, asked Spanish
authorities for a large Texas land tract which he would promote and sell to American pioneers.
The request by Austin seemed preposterous. His background was that of a Philadelphia dry goods
merchant, a Virginia mine operator, a Louisiana judge, and a Missouri banker. But early in 1821, the
Spanish government gave him permission to settle 300 families in Texas. Spain welcomed the
Americans for two reasons to provide a buffer against illegal U.S. settlers, who were creating
problems in east Texas even before the grant was made to Austin, and to help develop the land, since
only 3,500 native Mexicans had settled in Texas which was part of the Mexican state of Coahuila y
Tejas. Texas or Tejas as the Mexicans called it had technically been a part of the Spanish empire since
the 17th century. However, even as late as the 1820s, there were only about 3,000 Spanish Mexican
settlers in Texas, and Mexico City s hold on the territory was tenuous at best. After winning its own
independence from Spain in 1821, Mexico welcomed large numbers of Anglo American immigrants
into Texas in the hopes they would become loyal Mexican citizens and keep the territory from falling
into the hands of the United States. During the next decade men like Stephen Austin brought more
than 25,000 people to Texas,

In my eyes, homes are nothing more than a vessel that provides shelter. From there the owner or user
adds value and comfort to the homes, but the home still does not provide anything itself except shelter.
In addition, you are also dependent on local utility companies to provide you with your other needs,
and the home still provides only shelter. In a modern society we demand everything to have more than
one purpose, but for our homes we buy additions that are multi purpose, in order to make the home
more suitable for the user. Why don t we have homes that work? What if you could have a home built
in such a way that it regulates its own temperature, provides water, generates electricity, and more? In
a world of dependency, mankind should take steps into taking care of themselves in order to put less
burden on others. While it might sound impossible that a house can work for you, it is further from the
truth. We are in a society of cookie cutter homes that are nothing but a box that must be hooked into a
grid and multiple external systems in order to create a house that the average person could live in.
Michael Reynolds, is the master mine behind a new way of constructing homes. The homes he creates
are called Earthships. Don t let the celestial name deter you, these homes are made to support every
need a person has without any help from outside sources; the homes are completely self sufficient.
Population is on the rise and the demand for homes, utilities, and food is an

Beast In Lord Of The Flies
Lord of the Flies is a classic novel by William Golding. It follows the story of a group of young
British school boys who become stranded on a deserted island with no adults after a plane crash. They
must learn how to survive while dealing with the possibility of a beast on the island. They soon come
to discover that there is no physical beast hunting them on the island, the beast is in fact, within
themselves. Initially the beast is a nightmare of the small children, it then takes a physical form in the
parachute man on the mountain, and finally the beast is revealed to truly be inside of the boys
themselves. The first form taken by the beast is as a figment of the imagination. The younger boys on
the island have nightmares and claim ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Debt Ratio, Projects The Relationship Between The...
The Debt Ratio, projects the relationship between the total assets and total debts of the company. This
ratio is used to measure the financial risk of the company. In order to measure the financial risk, we
need to look at the amount of debt that the company has incurred due to the financing of operations.
This is done by comparing the total debt to the total assets of the company, from there we derive a
debt percentage. The total debt amount includes, current and non current liabilities. Whilst, the total
assets amount includes, current and non current assets. The overall ratio is expressed as a percentage.
This percentage indicates how much of debt is incurred by the company, when financing its
operations. If the overall percentage is high, it implies that the company is at a financial risk as there is
a relatively high proportion of debt.As potential investors would not want to in a company which has a
high percentage of debts.Whilst a low overall percentage, the company is at a low financial risk and
are handling their debts well. The
The Debt Ratio has increased from 49.81% in 2013 to 65.02% in 2014, with and overall increase of
15.21%. This percentage [ 49.81% ], is an indication of the amount of debt that Aspen Pharmacare has
incurred in order to purchase or finance its operations according to the equity it has accumulated. The
increase in debt, means that the liabilities of Aspen Pharmacare have increased since the past year.

VIOLENT CONFLICT AND THECHALLENGE OF FOOD SECURITY IN NORTH EAST
NIGERIA BY

University of Port Harcourt,
Port Harcourt, Nigeria ABSTRACT
This research work sought to examine the effect of violent conflict and the challenge of food security
in the North Eastern region of Nigeria as well as its effects on other part of the country and
neighbouring countries. Emphasis was placed on analysing the relationship between violence and
agricultural productivity and investments in the region using contextual analysis based on both
primary and secondary data. The theoretical perspective that was adopted is the frustration aggression
theory which states that people will always resort to violence/aggression whenever they are
excessively frustrated. This theory was therefore employed to understand causes of the problem of
violent conflict in the North East. It was established that violent conflict has caused a lot of problems
for the people living in that region most especially with regards tofood security since most of the
inhabitants of this region are subsistence farmers and since they have been displaced, cannot cultivate
their farms to feed themselves. The study recommends that government should tackle the root cause of
violent conflict and strengthen the fight against insurgency in order to bring lasting peace to the
region. The study also suggested that the economy should be highly

The Effect Of Temperature On The Ph Of Orange Juice
My question is Does the temperature of a substance effect it s ph?. I will be testing this by using ph
indicator strips that change color when it comes in contact with an acid or a base and comparing it
with a color chart. The substances I will be using are vinegar, orange juice , and lemon juice. These
can all be found at a local grocery store. The ph paper and color chart can be found at Walmart.
Besides my experiment there have been other experiments that have tested temperature s effect on ph.
They also wanted to know whether temperature affects the ph. I found an experiment online called
Effect of Temperature on the pH of orange juice done by students from Nease High School. Unlike my
project, they only tested Orange Juice. They used 5 different temperatures, and the result was that the
temperature had no effect. Another experiment I found online called Does storage temperature affect
the ph of Orange Juice by Anna Elizondo also only used Orange Juice. Her results were that the juice
was more acidic at a hot temperature. The last experiment i found was on the lines of my experiment,
but was more about my hypothesis. It was called Does Storage Temperature Affect Orange Juice s
Acidity? . Like the other experiments, this one only used Orange Juice. They used ph paper to measure
the acidity at 40 degrees 50 degrees over the span of 2 days. Their conclusion was that the ph was still
the same. I will be using cold cups of vinegar, orange juice,

Censorship In Motion Picture Association Of America
The control of what people may say, hear write read see and/or do, is the definition or censorship.
There is censorship in movies, books, music, speeches, and much more. A lot of people agree that we

Between December 1st and 2nd 1900, John Hossack (a farmer from Warren County, Iowa) was
murdered with an ax by his wife while in bed. Inspired by the true story of Margaret Hossack, an
Indianola, Iowa farm wife who was charged with the murder of her husband John. One of the
reporters, Susan Glaspell, decided to write a literary version of this investigation and Trifles came to
be. Susan Glaspell is a feminist writer from Davenport, Iowa who started off writing for a newspaper
called Des Moines Daily News. Later on her literary career she left the journalism industry and
founded a theatrical organization called Provincetown Players on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. In Trifles,
Glaspell covers issues regarding female oppression and patriarchal domination. Susan Glaspell s one

oppression of women. When Margaret Hossack was charged with the murder of her sixty year old
husband John, the man she had been married to for thirty three years, Indianola, Iowa. Killed by two
blows to his head with an ax, John Hossack was thought to be a cold mannered and difficult man to be

Sexual And Gender Identity
In the LGBTQ community, there is a tendency to use labels to define oneself. Many find comfort in
these titles; they know that, with the existence of a name, there is a community with likeminded
people out there in the world. This can mean an unexplainable amount to someone if they feel alone in
their sexual or gender identity. A label can contain a very reassuring message: you are not alone.
Because of this, many people depend on these labels to understand who they are, without considering
the damage that restriction that may do. According to queer theory developed by Judith Butler, a
respected expert in the field, there is fluidity to the way one identifies. In this case, fluidity refers to
not having a clear definition of a person s sexual or gender orientation. The film Soldier s Girl is a
great example of where clear sexual and gender identity only serve to confuse the main protagonists.
The story revolves around the murder of Private First Class Barry Winchell in Fort Campbell,
Kentucky because he fell in love with a trans woman. The intense and heart wrenching story, based on
a real life event, really displays just how different sexual orientation could be viewed from wildly
varied perspectives.
Barry Winchell, as a character, plays into the typical role of a straight American man. Winchell was
born and raised in Missouri, loves his family and his country, and works hard to fit in with his fellow
infantrymen. The normalcy of him and his life help to show how

I was sitting in my vehicle at the police department when I observed a Dodge Ram matching the

The Is Synonymous With The Concept Of Industrialization
Corporatization is synonymous with the concept of industrialization. When one thinks of an industrial
park, the picture of a sprawling landscape of large businesses comes to mind. The image of a
community of self sustaining mom and pop shops certainly doesn t fit the bill of what is commonly
thought of to be industrial. We more commonly think of large corporations like Monsanto and
Walmart as symbols of the adjective. In the case of the food industry, the advent of larger grocers,
larger agricultural labor contractors, and more advanced food distribution systems presents a large
amount of evidence to suggest that the food industry has become more corporate and industrial.
McMillan provides a solid background of the history of grocers in the United States. She specifically
points out King Kullen as an early innovator in the industry, stating of the time before King Kullen,
Most women would go to the A P for dry and canned goods, handing their shopping list to a clerk who
would portion out everything from bulk bins and shelves, and hand back the goods over a counter
(McMillan, 106). With this business model, it s very difficult to grow a very large business. This
model is extremely labor intensive, as a clerk had to obtain each item for a customer themselves,
making it so that a grocer could only serve a limited number of customers in one day. In the days
before King Kullen, this greatly restricted the size that a grocer could grow to. McMillan also points to

Small Town Vs Big City Essay
Small town verses big city, the age old argument which is better to live in and why does the grass
always look greener on the other side, well for the small towners at least. Growing up in Prince
George a small town in B.C, I always dreamed of leaving, moving on to bigger and better places, the
big cities looked so wonderful. Well I have now lived in Edmonton, Alberta for eight years and I will
say that home is where the heart is.
Now not all small towns are the same, some are in the middle of nowhere, not a thing around. Prince
George was different, sure it was small and stinky I may add, however, the lakes surrounding the town
were beautiful. The water was clear and clean, the beach areas were sandy and weed free. Unlike
Alberta where you could drive for hours and still not find a clean lake, in Prince George driving for 20
min will bring you to a beautiful lake for a day of fun. However, the closer the lake understandably the
busier the lake would be, it was still nice to go out on an evening for a few hours after work or on a
whim. Even though the closer lakes could be busier from time to time, compared to the city lakes, well
it doesn t even compare. Once a nice lake is found close to the city, everyone and their dog is going to
be heading to that lake on a beautiful day.
Less people! I love that about small towns, city people saying the Costco is busy compared to small
town people say the Costco is busy, is actually laughable. Costco in Prince George, you pull up

World War 1 Propaganda Essay
One of the strongest weapons of World War 1 was not the nuclear bomb or even the hydrogen bomb,
but propaganda. The media reproduced atrocity propaganda, which was very powerful in World War 1.
This propaganda used visuals depicting atrocities the enemy had committed in a biased and unfiltered
way to ensure public hatred in their respective nations. Television was another reincarnation of
propaganda that was used to sway public opinion. After the end of World War 2 media coverage the
war proposed the enemy as a threat to national security which inflated domestic fear of imminent
destruction. A perfect example of this in the United States was the Red Scare in 1950 which was

Such accusations were instantly picked up by the media. Even if this type of accusation was not

Economic Growth of Dubai Now known as a tourist destination like no other, Dubai was once a small
fishing and pearling community of close to 1,200 people. Appearing regularly in Western pop culture,
such as, movies, music, television shows, and advertising, the city of Dubai has come a long way from
its humble origins. The purpose of this paper is to look at what contributing economic and cultural
factors, throughout history, that have contributed to the explosive growth of Dubai, with the early
establishment of trade being a key feature. To fully understand the scale of development that has taken
place, it is required to understand some of the history that has led to its current status as a leader in the
Arabian Gulf regional economy and a luxury travel destination. Though the area that would later
become Dubai had been settled since approximately 2000 BCE, the first recording in modern history
dates to 1822. Initially known as Debai, the area was home to the Bani Yas tribe. Originally a
dependency of Abu Dhabi, the village sustained itself by fishing, pearl diving, and minor sea trade. On
June 9, 1833, led by Maktoum Bin Butti Al Maktoum, 800 members of the Al Bu Falasah clan

The Fashion Design Of Chanel
It has been over a century since Mademoiselle Chanel, determined to reform the concept of femininity
as much in style as in the essence, commissioned the chemist Ernest Beaux to develop what will
become the symbol of international perfumery. Chanel No. 5 is unquestionably the most legendary
ever made fragrance, described as an opera of olfactory art. Independent, unconventional, and
provocative, Coco Chanel transformed her unfamiliar name into an obligatory reference point for
fashion design of the twentieth. As an icon of female strength, she translates the complexity and
elegance that characterize the woman, with the creation of what would become the scent par
excellence. Her way of conceiving the perfume is peculiar. When asked where to put the perfume she
replies: A woman should wear a fragrance wherever she expects to be kissed ( A Woman ). Coco also
launches what turned out, according to the instructions of the designer, had to embody a concept of
femininity timeless, unique, and fascinating. The avant garde idea of Chanel breaks every scheme
imagining her fragrance for a modern and independent woman, far from the stereotype that envisages
she should perfume of roses. Hence, Chanel No. 5 is the first perfume that rejects the convention and
symbolizes the technological and cultural innovation, furthering the women s empowerment.
Chanel No. 5 is a concentration of absolute femininity that shook the world of fragrances forever with

Evolution Of Justice
How has justice evolved throughout world history?
When children are young they are expected to follow rules precisely and if they break a rule, then they
are typically forced to take a timeout. In a child s eyes, a time out is a horrible and miserable time
when they are compelled to think about what they did wrong. But even though a timeout is considered
harsh in the child s eyes it still establishes justice between the child who broke the rule and who was
affected by that child s choice. As the child grows older, it realizes that justice doesn t have to

In this example, Jesus is giving a sermon to people from various areas of Africa. Therefore, whoever
breaks even the smallest of the commandments and teaches others to do the same will be least in the
kingdom of heaven. On the other hand, whoever obeys the Law, and teaches others to do the same will
be great in the kingdom of heaven (The Sermon on the Mount 30 C.E.). This exemplifies that if one
was to break a commandment, he would face little to no severe punishment. Although the individual
would face little punishment, if they did nothing to make the situation right they would face
punishment spiritually or after death. However, Jesus did not only ensure punishment but also made
good promises for those who were obedient. (God speaking to Moses) From this you know that now,
if you obey my voice and hold fast to my covenant, you of all the nations shall be my very own for all
the earth is mine. I will count you a kingdom of priests, a consecrated nation (The Covenant Code,
Exodus 20:19 23:33). This portrays that those who did not obey God s covenant would not receive the
good things that he promised but they would, however, get away with facing little punishment
physically. On the whole, throughout history, justice becomes less about relentlessly punishing and
following every rule word for word but more about benefitting from being

Virtual Or Community Ward
A second option for the patient might have been a virtual or community ward.
The principle of the virtual ward is to provide an integrated health service for patient with high risk of
hospital admission. Essentially, high levels of care are provided in the patient s home with a GP acting
as consultant. A survey outlines high patient satisfaction into these wards which also reduce the
number and so cost of A E attendance, GP visit, social service provision and community health service
(Lewis et al 2013). If local authorities want to develop the virtual mode, it could be the best
mechanism to meet the patient s care needs in community (Lewis et al 2013).
A third and perhaps futuristic option might be telecare services for older people. Older people in their
homes have benefitted from telecare technology, which is designed to prevent isolation of frail people
(Davies and Newman 2011). Pendant alarm, fall alarm, device to monitor vital sign or moment beyond
safe area have proved to be good and effective technology to support the older people in community

The Role Of Household Income With Multiple Aspects Of...
Measure of wealth such as income and assets are commonly considered to be objective assessments of
environmental circumstances, making direct contributions to happiness or life satisfaction. Certainly,
the alternation between and individual s income and life satisfaction is as high as .50 in some
countries. (Krueger, 2006). The relationship of household income with multiple aspects of subjective
well being was examined in a New Zealand telephone probability sample conducted in 2008.
Consistent with previous research, household income had positive logarithmic associations with
subjective quality of life and happiness. The logarithmic function was steeper for quality of life than
for happiness, indicating that income is linked more ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Despite the belief that more money and possessions would improve our life, evidence shows that
people with a strong financial goal orientation are less satisfied with their lives, less happy and have
more psychological problems. (Dittmar, 2009). Surveys asking people how happy they are indicate
that the average level of happiness has not increased over several decades, despite large increases in
income per capita. For example, in the United States, income per capita has increase since 1950, yet
the percentage of respondents who say they are very happy has not increase, and the percentage who
says they are not very happy has not declined significantly. (Lee) Similar disconnects between
happiness and income has been found in Japan, The United Kingdom, and continental Europe. Two
explanations are often offered. The first explanation is that any additional happiness from more
income results primarily from increasing our relative income, but we can increase our relative income

is that the pursuit of money becomes addictive and reduces the time available for family and friends,
intellectual pursuits, exercise and other activities that result in genuine happiness and, it is claimed, do

Essay about The Breakfast Club
The Breakfast Club
Almost 150 years ago, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr., expressed the following sage but sad observation
in his book The Professor at the Breakfast Table : Society is always trying in some way or other to
grind us down to a single flat surface. Unfortunately, this is still true today. Last week I saw the movie
The Breakfast Club written and directed by John Hughes which expressed a similar theme.
Fortunately, youth of every age are quite aware of what they are going through and have the ability to
break the fast imposed on them by the socialization process which begins in the home and is
reinforced at school, not only by students and parents but teachers like Mr. Vernon as well.
In The Breakfast Club five ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
So he rebells and becomes the criminal . John has been labeled for life. Mr. Verner yells at him, See
what he ll be like in 5 years. It is ironic that he has developed such a cynical outlook on life, yet he
possesses such a keen insight into others personalities. However, there is a spark of hope for him.
Although obnoxious and intolerable, the others do not expose him as the guilty party for removing the
screw and closing the door. And he takes the fall to save the others when they wander the halls. His
first target is Claire.
The first thing out of the Princess s mouth is can t believe you can t get me out of this . And the first
impression we get is spoiled brat . She would rather be shopping this Saturday morning. Her yuppie
father drops her off in his yuppie Beamer. She doesn t belong in Detention. Her role is winning
popularity contests. She is the most popular student in school and is so lovable . Except at home where
she is treated as an object her parents use to get back at one another.
The Jock is raised in the image of his father. According to his father, there is nothing wrong in
screwing around as long as you don t get caught. As the Basketcase describes him, He can t make his
own decisions . He tortures a student by taping his buns not because he wants to, but because he thinks
he can win his father s approval. His coach and father expect him to be a winner.

  • 2. The Rosetta Stone Essay The Rosetta Stone In 1799, when Napoleon s army was dismantling a wall in Rashid, Egypt, they discovered the Rosetta Stone. Little did they know that this 11 inch thick piece of rock would be one of the greatest discoveries in history! It contained Egyptian scripture, with Greek also on the stone. This was used to decode the once lost Egyptian writing system. Before the 1800 s, attempts at trying to uncover the secrets held by the ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics found on walls inside numerous tombs were useless. The pictures were falsely believed to be symbolic, representing some sort of object or idea. Something soon changed all of this misconception. 1799 was the year of a great breakthrough in Egyptology. French troops, under ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another man who devoted many years of his life to studying the stone was Jean Francois Champollion. After many years of perseverance, Champollion finally translated the stone in 1822. He accomplished this feat by first recognizing that hieroglyphs were not symbols, but instead were associated with phonetics, as Thomas Young had proved. (Andrews 166) His first major breakthrough in his studies was in 1808, when he resolved those fifteen signs of the demotic script related with alphabetic letters from the Coptic language. From this he concluded that Coptic language must be based on the remnants of the last of the ancient Egyptian language, and written with the Greek alphabet, which is why it was readable to Champollion and other scholars researching the stone. Also, that the hieroglyphic text was a translation of the Greek, not the reverse, as had been previously believed. By 1818, Champollion had successfully concluded that though some signs were basically ideograms, many of the glyphs had phonetic value, meaning the ancient Egyptian script was at least partially alphabetic. (Giblin 83) He came to this conclusion after referring back to three other different forms of Egyptian writing and also using Coptic as a reference. Recognizing the name Ptolemy and Cleopatra in the Greek and demotic sections of the stone allowed him to identify those same names in hieroglyphics. They begin to see sex as a sensitive issue that should be taken very seriously because it involves life changing consequences. Additionally, a study published in the Journal of Adolescent Health found that teaching about contraception and making them available to teenagers was not associated with increased risk of sexual activity as many abstinence only supporters have insisted. Therefore, the availability of birth control along with education about it does not increase sexual activity but informs teenagers to practice good decision making for their bodies and their future. The opponents of birth control to teens overlook the fact that providing birth control to teenage girls would make sex much safer. Certainly, the unsteady rate of teenage pregnancies would decrease. Analysis Of Proust And The Squid By Maryanne Wolf # Essay 3 *Proust and the Squid,* by Professor Maryanne Wolf, unveils and celebrates reading, one of the single most remarkable inventions in history. (3) While it might seem absurd today, reading was invented only a few thousand years ago, and consequently it has had an undeniably colossal influence on humanity. Imagining a world without text seems unbelievable now, but for the better part of humanity this medium of communication was nonexistent. In this book, [Wolf] hope[s] to push [the readers] gently toward reconsidering things [they] might long have taken for granted such as how natural it is for a child to learn to read. This positive feedback loop in known as *neural plasticity,* and is, in short, the basis for much of who we are, and who we might become. (3) Reading is an intellectual feat of monstrous proportions. It changes the brain, and thus [it is a] powerful mirror of... how the brain learns anything new. (4) To better comprehend its magnitude, Wolf divides her work into three topics: the history of reading, how a modern child learns to read, and the case when a child struggles to learn to read. These three sections, when taken together, provide a holistic and nuanced view of the act of reading, making the reader appreciate the things once taken for granted. The narrator s environment is much like the foxes, controlling. Her parent s subtle hints, whether it be her mother s comments or her father s tasks, are slowly but surely enclosing on her like a cage, and will soon trap her. The horses however, try as hard as they can, much like the narrator, to roam free for as long as possible, seemingly unaware of the forces acting against them in an attempt to deny them their freedom. For the horses, this force was the narrator s father, who felt that they had a purpose to be served, in the narrator s case, it was her mother s thought that she had a place to be served as well; inside the home. In the case of the foxes and horses, neither win, as they both die in the end, much like people. However, although the horse s lives end much sooner, they get to experience something that the foxes do not, and that is freedom. Lewis book Mere Christianity, Right and Wrong as a Clue to the Meaning of the Universe, I began to feel a spark of faith and hope. Lewis apologetic is geared primarily toward nonbelievers, and discusses social law as evidence for God, as well as a short glimpse of the Christian faith. Lewis uses the existence of what we a call a conscious, or the notion that there are things that people should and should not do to point to the existence of a higher power. Lewis argues that everyone has a inherent sense of right and wrong. This is observable through a man s feeling of how people ought to behave. One should not confuse moral law with instinct, because if there are two conflicting instincts within a person, Moral Law will point to the weaker of the two instincts. Impulses in themselves, Lewis explains, are like keys on a piano. Neither key is good or bad on its own, but all the right keys within the correct context. Moral Law tells use which keys to play. The extreme pressure from the four years spent in high school leaves students drained and needing to re energize before facing an even more rigorous course load in college. A gap year is the perfect solution as students take time off with a purpose before furthering their education. A gap year is a structured period of time between high school and college when students take a break from formal education to increase self awareness, learn from different cultures, and experiment for possible careers. As defined by Andrew Jones in his thesis paper for the University of London, a gap year is, any period of time between 3 and 24 months which an individual takes out of formal education, training or the workplace, and where the time out sits in the context of a longer career trajectory (Jones 8). • 19. The Mexican State Of Coahuila Y Tejas American settlement in Texas began with the encouragement of first the Spanish, and then Mexican, governments. In the summer of 1820 Moses Austin, a bankrupt 59 year old Missourian, asked Spanish authorities for a large Texas land tract which he would promote and sell to American pioneers. The request by Austin seemed preposterous. His background was that of a Philadelphia dry goods merchant, a Virginia mine operator, a Louisiana judge, and a Missouri banker. But early in 1821, the Spanish government gave him permission to settle 300 families in Texas. Spain welcomed the Americans for two reasons to provide a buffer against illegal U.S. settlers, who were creating problems in east Texas even before the grant was made to Austin, and to help develop the land, since only 3,500 native Mexicans had settled in Texas which was part of the Mexican state of Coahuila y Tejas. Texas or Tejas as the Mexicans called it had technically been a part of the Spanish empire since the 17th century. However, even as late as the 1820s, there were only about 3,000 Spanish Mexican settlers in Texas, and Mexico City s hold on the territory was tenuous at best. After winning its own independence from Spain in 1821, Mexico welcomed large numbers of Anglo American immigrants into Texas in the hopes they would become loyal Mexican citizens and keep the territory from falling into the hands of the United States. From there the owner or user adds value and comfort to the homes, but the home still does not provide anything itself except shelter. In addition, you are also dependent on local utility companies to provide you with your other needs, and the home still provides only shelter. In a modern society we demand everything to have more than one purpose, but for our homes we buy additions that are multi purpose, in order to make the home more suitable for the user. Why don t we have homes that work? What if you could have a home built in such a way that it regulates its own temperature, provides water, generates electricity, and more? In a world of dependency, mankind should take steps into taking care of themselves in order to put less burden on others. While it might sound impossible that a house can work for you, it is further from the truth. • 23. The Debt Ratio, Projects The Relationship Between The... The Debt Ratio, projects the relationship between the total assets and total debts of the company. This ratio is used to measure the financial risk of the company. In order to measure the financial risk, we need to look at the amount of debt that the company has incurred due to the financing of operations. This is done by comparing the total debt to the total assets of the company, from there we derive a debt percentage. The total debt amount includes, current and non current liabilities. Whilst, the total assets amount includes, current and non current assets. The overall ratio is expressed as a percentage. This percentage indicates how much of debt is incurred by the company, when financing its operations. If the overall percentage is high, it implies that the company is at a financial risk as there is a relatively high proportion of debt.As potential investors would not want to in a company which has a high percentage of debts.Whilst a low overall percentage, the company is at a low financial risk and are handling their debts well. • 24. Violent Conflict And Thechallenge Of Food Security Essay VIOLENT CONFLICT AND THECHALLENGE OF FOOD SECURITY IN NORTH EAST NIGERIA BY MOTUBOMA THOMAS Department of Political Administrative Studies (International Relations) University of Port Harcourt, Port Harcourt, Nigeria ABSTRACT This research work sought to examine the effect of violent conflict and the challenge of food security in the North Eastern region of Nigeria as well as its effects on other part of the country and neighbouring countries. Emphasis was placed on analysing the relationship between violence and agricultural productivity and investments in the region using contextual analysis based on both primary and secondary data. The theoretical perspective that was adopted is the frustration aggression theory which states that people will always resort to violence/aggression whenever they are excessively frustrated. This theory was therefore employed to understand causes of the problem of violent conflict in the North East. It was established that violent conflict has caused a lot of problems for the people living in that region most especially with regards tofood security since most of the inhabitants of this region are subsistence farmers and since they have been displaced, cannot cultivate their farms to feed themselves. The study recommends that government should tackle the root cause of violent conflict and strengthen the fight against insurgency in order to bring lasting peace to the region. I will be testing this by using ph indicator strips that change color when it comes in contact with an acid or a base and comparing it with a color chart. The substances I will be using are vinegar, orange juice , and lemon juice. These can all be found at a local grocery store. The ph paper and color chart can be found at Walmart. Besides my experiment there have been other experiments that have tested temperature s effect on ph. They also wanted to know whether temperature affects the ph. I found an experiment online called Effect of Temperature on the pH of orange juice done by students from Nease High School. Unlike my project, they only tested Orange Juice. They used 5 different temperatures, and the result was that the temperature had no effect. Another experiment I found online called Does storage temperature affect the ph of Orange Juice by Anna Elizondo also only used Orange Juice. Her results were that the juice was more acidic at a hot temperature. The last experiment i found was on the lines of my experiment, but was more about my hypothesis. It was called Does Storage Temperature Affect Orange Juice s Acidity? . Like the other experiments, this one only used Orange Juice. They used ph paper to measure the acidity at 40 degrees 50 degrees over the span of 2 days. Their conclusion was that the ph was still the same. • 30. Sexual And Gender Identity In the LGBTQ community, there is a tendency to use labels to define oneself. Many find comfort in these titles; they know that, with the existence of a name, there is a community with likeminded people out there in the world. This can mean an unexplainable amount to someone if they feel alone in their sexual or gender identity. A label can contain a very reassuring message: you are not alone. Because of this, many people depend on these labels to understand who they are, without considering the damage that restriction that may do. According to queer theory developed by Judith Butler, a respected expert in the field, there is fluidity to the way one identifies. In this case, fluidity refers to not having a clear definition of a person s sexual or gender orientation. The film Soldier s Girl is a great example of where clear sexual and gender identity only serve to confuse the main protagonists. The story revolves around the murder of Private First Class Barry Winchell in Fort Campbell, Kentucky because he fell in love with a trans woman. The intense and heart wrenching story, based on a real life event, really displays just how different sexual orientation could be viewed from wildly varied perspectives. When one thinks of an industrial park, the picture of a sprawling landscape of large businesses comes to mind. The image of a community of self sustaining mom and pop shops certainly doesn t fit the bill of what is commonly thought of to be industrial. We more commonly think of large corporations like Monsanto and Walmart as symbols of the adjective. In the case of the food industry, the advent of larger grocers, larger agricultural labor contractors, and more advanced food distribution systems presents a large amount of evidence to suggest that the food industry has become more corporate and industrial. McMillan provides a solid background of the history of grocers in the United States. She specifically points out King Kullen as an early innovator in the industry, stating of the time before King Kullen, Most women would go to the A P for dry and canned goods, handing their shopping list to a clerk who would portion out everything from bulk bins and shelves, and hand back the goods over a counter (McMillan, 106). With this business model, it s very difficult to grow a very large business. This model is extremely labor intensive, as a clerk had to obtain each item for a customer themselves, making it so that a grocer could only serve a limited number of customers in one day. In the days before King Kullen, this greatly restricted the size that a grocer could grow to. McMillan also points to agricultural ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Growing up in Prince George a small town in B.C, I always dreamed of leaving, moving on to bigger and better places, the big cities looked so wonderful. Well I have now lived in Edmonton, Alberta for eight years and I will say that home is where the heart is. Now not all small towns are the same, some are in the middle of nowhere, not a thing around. Prince George was different, sure it was small and stinky I may add, however, the lakes surrounding the town were beautiful. The water was clear and clean, the beach areas were sandy and weed free. Unlike Alberta where you could drive for hours and still not find a clean lake, in Prince George driving for 20 min will bring you to a beautiful lake for a day of fun. However, the closer the lake understandably the busier the lake would be, it was still nice to go out on an evening for a few hours after work or on a whim. Even though the closer lakes could be busier from time to time, compared to the city lakes, well it doesn t even compare. Once a nice lake is found close to the city, everyone and their dog is going to be heading to that lake on a beautiful day. Less people! Appearing regularly in Western pop culture, such as, movies, music, television shows, and advertising, the city of Dubai has come a long way from its humble origins. The purpose of this paper is to look at what contributing economic and cultural factors, throughout history, that have contributed to the explosive growth of Dubai, with the early establishment of trade being a key feature. Independent, unconventional, and provocative, Coco Chanel transformed her unfamiliar name into an obligatory reference point for fashion design of the twentieth. As an icon of female strength, she translates the complexity and elegance that characterize the woman, with the creation of what would become the scent par excellence. Her way of conceiving the perfume is peculiar. When asked where to put the perfume she replies: A woman should wear a fragrance wherever she expects to be kissed ( A Woman ). This exemplifies that if one was to break a commandment, he would face little to no severe punishment. The second explanation is that the pursuit of money becomes addictive and reduces the time available for family and friends, intellectual pursuits, exercise and other activities that result in genuine happiness and, it is claimed, do not reduce the happiness of others.
