Art As A Driving Force For The Abstract Of Art
Art can be for art s sake; it does not need to be representational. Jackson Pollock was an influential
American painter who became a driving force for the abstract expression movement. His belief that
his art comes from within was an impetrative idea behind his style. His beliefs have a huge impact on
how I view art, create art, and inspired me for my final piece.
Pollock was born in Cody, Wyoming in 1912. His father, LeRoy Pollock, was a farmer who raised his
children in Arizona and Chico, California. Pollock was heavily influenced by Pablo Picasso, Digo
Rivera, and Native American art. All of these influences contributed to Pollock s unique style. In
1929, Jackson Pollock studied at the Students League in New York under Thomas Hart Benton. He
learned techniques that helped him understand space, line, color, and much more. In mid 1940 s
Pollock introduced his famous drip paintings. These paintings were such a radical approach to the
changes that happened during and after WWII. Media latched onto his methods and Life soon releases
an article titled Jackson Pollock: Is he the greatest living painter in the United States? The content was
mocking and respectful. Vogue magazine caught onto the avant garde artwork and joined the trend
publishing fashion photographs in front of the beautiful drip paintings. These widely known
companies persuaded society to accept the new idea to art. Pollock struggled with depression and
alcoholism. His premature death in August of 1956,

Technology And The Post Office
Mail as Technology
Mail is a form of technology that has stood the test of time despite all of the changes technology has
experienced in communication. This technology has endured despite email, social media, financial
loss and the enduring threat of privatization. The U.S. Post Office has remained due to one important
philosophy which is that every person in the United States no matter who, no matter where has the
right to equal access to secure, efficient, and affordable mail service. (Potter, 2007). This government
agency has been around for more than 240 years and remains a strong institution that society is
dependent on for communication. (USPS, 2007).

Most other correspondence ran between the colonists and England, the Netherlands, or Sweden. The
flow of mail needed a more accurate system so the General Court of Massachusetts appointed Richard
Fairbanks tavern in Boston as the first repository for mail brought from or sent overseas. The need for
communication began to grow (USPS, 2007).
Beginnings
The first official post office emerged in the year 1683 in Pennsylvania. In the south, communication
was largely dependent on slaves who transported messages through plantations. In 1692, Thomas
Neale appointed Governor Andrew Hamilton as his deputy postmaster general. Although this position
was filled by many, it was Benjamin Franklin who made revolutionary changes to the post office. He
brought new surveys, new milestones on principle roads as well as newer and shorter routes. As a
result, the organization turned its first profit in 1760 (USPS, 2007). This improvement was one of
many that would take place within the Postal Service.
Mail in this time period, ran into issues of privacy when Goddard from the Crown s service warned
Letters are liable to be stopped opened by ministerial mandates, their Contents construed into
treasonable Conspiracies; and News Papers, those necessary and important vehicles, especially in
Times of public Danger, may be rendered of little avail for want of Circulation. (Goddard, 1775).

History of Homo Erectus Essay
When one thinks of history, they usually refer to their family s history, going back several generations.
Some might refer to a point in history, dating back several hundred years. For instance, one might
ponder their favorite historical event, like the Civil War, the Spanish Inquisition, or the Creation of the
State of Israel. Seldom do people talk about the first men, called Homo erectus. Scientists are the only
ones who have dedicated time to this interesting subject. The study of the first men will teach us so
much about our distant history, our connections, our strengths, and ourselves. About 2 million years,
Homo erectus evolved. They evolved from Africa and later spread throughout the world. Homo

They would tell each other the number of things they need like food or even the amount of animals
that were in a pack together. The only had numbers up to fourteen. Nowadays, many tribes use the
same sigh language as the first men did, but they have made the sigh language better and have
developed more sign1s. Fire was a main resource to the first men. When they first saw fire, whether it
came from lighting or something else, they feared it and thought of it as terror. They saw fire destroy
the world and make it worse, but eventually they understood the features of fire and they used it for
their own good. Once they discovered fire, they used it for everything. Fire changed their lives
drastically and made life easier. They could use fire to cook their food, to keep them warm during the
winter, and use it for light. Fire was also very dangerous. They would burn themselves or even destroy
their homes. Fire was used as a weapon. Fire was used to hunt for food. The first men realized that
animals are scared of fire. They started forest fire and when the animals would get scared, they would
run around. As soon as this happened, the hunters would jump on them with speaks and stone axes and
would kill them to eat. Eating is important to man because it is what keeps them alive. Early humans
worked hard to get their food. Food was most important to them and it was what they worked for.

Life Cycle of a Plant, Dominant and Recessive Traits
Paragraph One: Description of the life cycle of a plant from seed to seed (information about the seed,
germination, growth, development, flower, pollination, fruit, seed; information is accurate)
The life cycle of a plant from seed to seed is not that complicated, it consists of a few steps. This all
starts with a seed. The first step is for the seed to germinate and turn into a seedling. Once the seedling
is formed, it will then grow into an adult plant with petals. These petals will then sprout to flowers,
which will produce fruits. The flowers will go to a process of fertilization called pollination, that s
when the pollen is moved from anthers to stigmas. Since the pollen contains sperm and it is passed on
to the ovules in the ovary, the sperm moves down to an ovule, which contains eggs. Fertilization then
happens when the sperm fuses with the egg in the ovule. The petals and stamens then fall away
creating a fruit. These fruits contain seeds, and once the plant has died, the seeds will fall to the
ground and repeat this cycle. So to summarize, the seed goes through a process called germination and
forms into a seedling, which then grows roots and forms true leaves. This plant continues to grow until
flowers are formed. The next step is a process called pollination and fertilization, which then forms a
fruit. The fruit will release the seeds and the process repeats.
Paragraph Two: Description of the purposes of the different parts of the plant

1. How does Sassoon show the depression of the young soldier?
The depression of the young soldier before he commits suicide is clearly displayed in the poem.
At the start of the poem, the image of a happy, young, and perhaps rather naïve boy is placed before
us;
Simple tells us that he is innocent, perhaps rather naïve, and doesn t understand the concept of war.
Grinned at life in empty joy suggests to us that he was pleased by anything, a happy carefree young
man. He was young and had no worries because he enjoyed life and did as he pleased. He made life
seem easy and happy even when times were bad. It also given us a notion of how immature the boy
turned into a soldier and sent to war must have been.
Slept soundly through ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The structure of the poem also adds to the stark change the boy has suffered throughout the war.
Sassoon uses the same structure that a children s rhyme usually has, and this is perhaps intended to
emphasize that this boy, turned into a soldier and driven to suicide, was still just a boy.
The depression of the young soldier is also shown to be shared by many; the eye catching title Suicide
in the Trenches is evidence of this fact. The word trenches further emphasizes that the depression the
young soldier feels is felt throughout all the trenches, and therefore many others in war.
The juxtaposition between the first two stanzas adds to the effect intended upon the reader by
Siegfried Sassoon. He wants us to feel the harsh reality of war; cold, unjust, harsh and depressing, and
the image of a happy young man driven to suicide by war certainly emphasizes this point. This jarring
contrast makes the boy s death a lot sadder and brings out sympathy in the reader.
2. What is Sassoon s view of the crowds which greet the soldiers on their return from the trenches?
The last stanza is very effective in displaying Sassoon s view of the crowds. Throughout this stanza a
bitter, sarcastic, sneering and rather angry tone is used;
You smug faced crowds The use of you makes the reader feel as if Sassoon is addressing the reader,
naming us all guilty of the smug faced cheering and clapping of the

Loneliness And Alienation In The Painted Door By Sinclair...
Loneliness and alienation can often have a strong effect on people, especially when facing normal
societal challenges. People will act differently and have different reactions if they aren t around others
facing these problems, this is illustrated well by Sinclair Ross in two of his stories. His story The
Painted Door focused on a farmer s wife named Ann. It begins with her husband, John, leaving to help
his father at his father s farm while Ann begs him to stay. He leaves anyway but stops to visit their
neighbour, Steven, and asks him to go visit Ann to keep her company. Out of loneliness and
desperation Ann cheats on John with Steven. The next morning, they find John frozen to death and
Ann sees paint on his palm, revealing John had seen Ann and Steven together and left back into the
cold to meet his demise. Sinclair Ross One s a Heifer focuses on a thirteen year old ... Show more

He strongly hints at it when they talk about her and expressess his distaste, Too many of the kind you
ll never get rid of again. She did, last summer when she was here. I had to put her out. (Ross 423)
Vickers is not used to having people around, so when this girl stays with him he is unsure how to deal
with her, and he ends up murdering her. He also does everything he can to keep the protagonist out of
the box stall, It s just kind of a harness room now. Up till a year ago I kept a stallion. (Ross 418)
Throughout the story it is strongly hinted that Vickers is keeping the body of the girl in the box stall.
He is very reluctant to let the protagonist see inside and tries to draw the protagonists attention away
from the box stall. Vickers is clearly a character driven by his comfortable loneliness and isolation
from the outside world to murder his companion. Both of these characters were driven to make
drastic, life changing decisions as a result of their loneliness and

The Main Characters Of The Pianist s The Pianist
The Pianist is based on the true story of a renowned Polish Jewish musician who lived through World
War 2 in Warsaw, Poland. At the start of the war, Jewish families had to wear white arm bands with a
blue Star of David and were only allowed a small amount of money. Families were sent off to
concentration camps in packed railroad cars and the families who remained in Warsaw starved to
death. The only reason why the main character, Wladyslaw Szpilman, was able to survive was through
the people who helped give him food, shelter and basic necessities. The kindness of others helped
Wladyslaw survive through the wartimes. Kindness is defined as, an individual that possesses a
sympathetic or helpful nature. One of the main themes within The Pianist is that kindness can be
found in the most unexpected places, even in Nazi Germany.
Wladyslaw Szpilman found help from countless people, even from Germans who were not Jewish.
Irena Sendler was a social worker who lived in Warsaw. She was a part of the Polish Underground and
a Holocaust resistance. It is estimated that she saved more than 2,000 Jewish children from the Ghetto.
She was awarded the Righteous among the Nations in 1965. Irena Sendler said,
To save one Jewish child, ten Poles and two Jews had to risk death. To betray that same child and the
family that hid him required only one informer or, worse still, one blackmailer. The risk of being
caught by the SS was not prison, but death death for the entire family. (Sendler)

Masking In Me Before You, By Jojo Moyes
Masking Is Good...Or Is It?
When was the last time you wore a mask? Was it beneficial or harmful to you and/or others? Masking
started a really very long time ago, and it still happens today. It happens occurs all the time constantly,
and everyone will do it sometime in their life. People change their persona depending on where they
are and their environment. Masks can be worn mentally or physically, and for many different
purposes, including plays, religion, rituals, or trying to fit in. These devices can also be harmful or
beneficial painful or profitable to you, someone else, or society. Sometimes Some days it affects all of
these things. They Masks give people the power to do what they want, and give them the courage, but
it can backfire. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another reason people mask themselves is so that they can change how society views them, therefore
people don t get to be who they really truly are. In the book, Me Before You , written by Jojo Moyes,
Will Traynor doesn t get to live the life that he wants to live. This life he wants to live is the one he
had before the motorcycle accident, where had had become mostly paralyzed. Louisa, his caregiver,
separated his depression a bit from him, but he still decided that he wanted to commit suicide because
of both the physical and mental pain he is going through. This Throughout the story shows that Will
masks himself therefore because he can t be who he truly is and who he wants to be. In the book, Will
explains to Louisa about his old self, with his memories and experiences. He recalls a time when he
was in Paris, going through the cafés and the city square. Louisa mentioned her taking him to Paris,
but Will described that he wants to go as his old self and not the person he is now because it causes
too much pain. He had a great life before, full of fun and sports, but now, everything is different. The
mask is keeping Will from having a good life and the one that he was meant to have. Masks, an article
by George Ulrich, states, In play these children and adults are able to become something they are not;
something that cannot be...One of the most important things that masks do is transform the identity of
the wearer... These parts of the text shows how masks can change them and who the wearers really
are. This affects people because they spend their life being someone that they aren t. Some would say
that they help people become a person that they want to be. This only applies to some cases and
people need to look at the overall picture. Even if they wear the mask and they like it on, they aren t
who they were meant to

How Did Elie Wiesel Survive
Q2. I believe that Elie was able to survive the concentration camps for a number of different reasons.
For instance, Elie had a reason to live, which kept him going and wanting to stay alive. In addition, he
was afraid of death, many of the prisoners were so afraid to die that they fought to stay alive until the
very end. Elie was also physically able which had allowed him to pass through the several selections
that they had throughout the book. Elie was not the only one of the Jews who had made it out of the
horrendous death camps that they had been trapped in, others had also escaped with their lives. Many
of the Jews survived based on similar qualities, views, and traits. It was quite astonishing that anyone
was able to survive such gruesome camps. If I were put in their position, I am unable if I would be
able to survive to tell the stories of the concentration camps.
Elie was able to survive the concentration camps for several reasons, I believe a major driving force
being his family. Expanding upon this further, his father had been the main reason for Elie s survival;

God. Faith played a part in the mindset of the Jewish people. Without the perseverance and the will to
survive, they would not have fought nearly as hard as they had. I believe that mindset and
perseverance was the main reason as to why some survived and others did not. Adding to this, if you
did not have the will to live, there would be absolutely no point. If you were not willing to get up and
fight for your life, you were basically dead. Perseverance and mindset were a vital quality to have in

generations. It has been a common theme in every relationship I have ever had. Although initially I

Beginning with an inability to function, an impairment in personality must be present in either identity
or self direction. A person exhibiting an impairment in identity might criticize himself excessively,
have deep and troubling experiences of emptiness or possibly even experience dissociative states
under extreme stress. A person experiencing an impairment with self direction would exhibit signs of
inability to follow through or possibly even set goals, and have no drive in regards to career plans. The
Diagnostic criteria for this disorder demand that 5 of 9 criteria are met. Often a person with this
disorder will exhibit signs of suicidal tendencies or self mutilation. Other symptoms may include, but
are not limited to reacting in advance to a possibility of abandonment. The mere thought of losing a
relationship or a person who is viewed in some way as a caretaker is enough to cause significant
changes in their self image and therefore their behavior. These people are extremely sensitive to
changes in their environment, and it does not matter if those changes are announced in advance or
sprung by surprise. Extreme irritability and anxiety can cause instability as well. Often issues
controlling anger and temper tantrums become extremely problematic in keeping stability in home and
work environments. Most of the time this issue escalates to inappropriate proportions, causing loss of

Income Statements And The Financial Records Of Any Company
Finance Essay
Income Statements
Income statements are an important element crucial to the financial records of any company. Any
profit making organization is expected to have records containing its income statements. Income
statements are normally recorded annually at the end of a specific financial period. The major purpose
of an income statement is to show stakeholders of the company such as managers and investors
whether the company made a profits or losses in the period being reported. This performance analysis
provided by the income statements can help managers come up with strategies to improve on

goods and services. This is a key section for investors and prefer companies with a positive cash flow

Loyalty, Sacrifice And Compassion Of The Heart
The word loyalty means fidelity to law which is generally applicable in the case of the Sovereign of
the State. It is one of those noble qualities that is found not only in humans, but in pets as well, such as
dogs, horses or even elephants in some countries. But in a broader sense, it means having
steadfastness in allegiance to a person, people or a cause, or to an even bigger picture: one s country. It
involves obedience, sacrifice and compassion of the heart. Loyalty is a broad term, which can be
applied to one s family, their locality or their country. Being a loyal per¬son could mean that they are
ready to sacrifice even their own life for the sake of whatever they are loyal to. They bear a moral
character. A truly loyal man cannot tempt to be bribed or to deviate from his own path. Loyalty is
being absolutely dependable in all circumstances. In this world, there are only a few instances of truly
loyal personalities. Loyalty is common among the courageous soldiers and servants. There are
instances of pets such as dogs, horses or elephants that will give their lives out of loyalty for the
interest of their master. In Homer s The Odyssey, loyalty is a major theme that underlies the entire
story. There are several examples of loyalty, such as one of the most apparent ones; Penelope s loyalty
to her husband, Odysseus s loyalty to his men throughout their quest and even some smaller examples
such as Odysseus s dog and servants. Loyalty defined

Singer s Principle Of Equality
Singer s principle of equality is the equal, impartial consideration of all like interests (Singer, p. 20). It
is a non factual principle that presents an ideal, normative approach, rather than reflecting how the
world actually looks. It relates to racism as it is the neglect of the interests of a race, or the
prioritisation of a race that leads to racist policies (Study Guide, p. 63). Principle of equality would
require the interests are weighed impartially, and seeing as weighing interests based on race is as
arbitrary as hair colour or names and therefore irrelevant, it would eliminate much blatant racism.
Singer (p. 27)holds even if different averages in IQ among different races were found, it wouldn t
result in different treatment as intelligence doesn t affect basic human interests. This doesn t rule all

It is not unusual for ceramicists to employ photography as a means of documenting their works, yet
Philadelphia based artist Peter Olson s method of incorporating these two media on his exquisite clay

Analysis Of Night By Elie Wiesel
In the memoir Night, written by Elie Weisel, you take a journey through the 1940s, and learn what it
was like to live during the Holocaust. Night records the life of Elie Wiesel during his teen years, and
the oppression he and his family went through because of their Jewish descent.
The Holocaust was a horrifying genocide where Adolf Hitler and the Nazis strived to wipe out the
Jewish race, as well as Poles, Slavs, Jehovah s Witnesses, Homosexuals, Gypsies, etc. Jews were
taken from their homes and transported to concentration camps to work until they were seen unfit to
do so, and then they were sent to the chimney. The Holocaust resulted in around six to eleven million
deaths.

His personal recording of the events makes it more relatable than reading the facts straight from a
history book. This is one of the many reasons that Night is considered a nonfiction memoir, and not an
autobiography. A memoir has an informal tone and is filled with emotional truths rather than historical
facts like an autobiography.
They were stripped of their clothes and dignity when they got up the next morning. Their hair was also

Whilst I was at placement I have taken part in a lot of activities. Some of these have needed me to tell
the children how to work safely. One of the activities that I had to do this was when they were using
the scissors. I assisted in an activity where they had to make poppies. This was done by making a
flower shape on a piece of paper and then getting the children to cut around it. I carefully supervised
the children to make sure that they do not hurt themselves while they were doing the activity. I also

I also made sure that the children were allowed to take risks when at placement. This is by them being
able to use the scissors. It is good for the children to be able to do the risks to make sure that they
develop skills that they will be able to use later in life. Another activity that I took part in was bubble
painting. This was where I put paint in a tray and added water. Once this was mixed properly I got the
children to use a straw and blow through it to make bubbles. Once the bubbles were there a piece of
paper was placed over them to create a bubble effect picture. There were two different trays of which
one was purple and the other one was orange. This is so that they were able to make their own choice
on what colour they wanted to use. Upon doing this I had to explain to the children how to work
safely. This was by ensuring that they followed the instructions given. Some of these included making
sure that they don t put the liquid in their mouth, eyes and making sure that the correct clothing was
worn. Whilst the activity was taking place the children was supervised. This was to make sure that
they behaved appropriately. The children were encouraged to take turns when doing this activity with
other members of the group. This was so that there were plenty of room for the children ensuring that
none of the children got hurt. When I was doing the activity one of the children accidently sucked

The Interlopers
The Interlopers : The short story The Interlopers by Saki demonstrates the ironic aura of man vs.
nature, and man vs. man. Hector Hugh Munro, pen named Saki, was one of the most popular short
story writers during the pre World War I British literature era. He wrote many stories and is often
referred to as a highly under rated author for British literature. His war experiences were apparent in
the novellas that he wrote, and often gave readers a gloomy, disturbed feeling. Other stories by Saki
include: Gabriel Ernest , The Toys of Peace , and The Storyteller . These short stories specifically
illustrate horror, and the advantage of living life outside of the box. The three predominant literary
techniques in Saki s The Interlopers ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The conflict instantly changes and nature becomes involved. While trapped under the tree they realize
how idiotic the quarrel has been and vow to become cordial; treating one another as neighbors, instead
of as enemies. The men s forgiveness towards each other displays an internal conflict because both
had to weigh the pros and cons of ending the feud. Either they make peace and work together to get
freed, or they could just stay angry at one another and risk never being rescued from under the tree.
Therefore, the three main conflicts displayed in The Interlopers are Man vs. Man, Man vs. Nature, and
Man vs. self. All of which provide a great deal of trouble for both men all through out the novella.
Irony also plays a big part in understanding the concept of the story. Without Saki s ironic ways
readers would not get a clear idea of what the moral is after reading the novella. As To begin, Georg
and Ulrich are fighting over land, which in the outcome is the cause of their death. In the beginning
they had the intentions of searching across the useless spurs in hopes of gunning down a human rival.
All along the only foe that they truly had was within the nature that was surrounding them. Saki ended
the story with one word; wolves. It is not directly stated if Georg and Ulrich were eaten by the beasts,
but that one word creates a mysterious vibe that makes the reader wonder if either of their crew ever
made it in time to help them in time to fight

Mindless Entertainment In Fahrenheit 451
Fahrenheit 451: Essay
Mindless entertainment can serve as a gateway to fun, but also keep us from what really matters.

How Has The World Changed Over Time Essay
There is no doubt that the world has changed over time. New eras of time brought new ideas and

Somali Pirates and the Response of The United States Essay
To begin, pirates have been prowling the seas as far back as ancient times, such as the Phoenicians and
Greeks in the Mediterranean. As well Muslim piracy as Jihad has existed since the 17th Century along
the Barbary Coast of North Africa.2 These pirates were known as Barbary corsairs, and they would
attack ships from Christian countries, seizing their ships and, and selling the sailors into slavery.
Today, Somali pirates are seizing ships and taking hostages for ransom along the waters off the coast
of Somali and the Gulf of Aden.
The root of the Somali pirates was established then put into motion after the Somali Civil War and the
fall of the Barre regime in 1991, the last functioning government.4 Along with the government, also ...

Classical Music And Its Influence On The Modern World
There are many types of music in the world, with many different artists, backgrounds, and stories to
tell. Every genre holds within itself a message, and this message shows a glimpse of the past as well as
the possibilities of the future. People everywhere love music for these reasons and more, and I love
one style of music in particular: a style that brings me comfort, makes me question the world, and
gives me insight as to who I am. Classical music describes a genre that, for me, means more than just
notes on the page or in the air; the music speaks to a deep and wonder seeking part of me that cannot
quite be described using words. The true evolution of primitive music began around 1750 during the
Classical Era in Europe, with the pioneering works of Mozart and Haydn, as well as many others.
Deriving from these great composers, the genre further evolved during the Romantic and Modern Eras
by encompassing a deeply emotional and expressive side unlike anything heard before. Indeed, these
periods of music entail a vast and rich history of pieces written to please royalty, soft and haunting
works of lost love, and vast orchestral suites that try to capture the majesty of the natural world. Such
vast detail and eloquent composition allows the listener of classical music to immediately be
transported to another time, another world, and especially another mindset. Other genres of music may
contain hints of these same elements, but none can fully compare to the true qualities

How College Dating Has Changed My Life
College dating has changed a lot since my parents went to school. Courtship and chivalry are dead, or
extremely hard to find, and a majority of college students are involved in the hookup culture. A
hookup is a nonromantic encounter with a friend or acquaintance that involves an unspecified degree
of sexual interaction, (Carpenter and DeLamater 129). When I first started college, I had a very nice
relationship that lasted about 3 months. When we both decided to just be friends, it dawned on me that
I could sleep with whomever I wanted to. During my second semester in college, I more than doubled
the amount of guys I slept with in high school and I know why I did it. I let myself engage in hookup
culture because I wanted to rebel against my parents, have some sense of intimacy without
commitment, experience new things, and it was so much fun to brag about with my girlfriends.
However, after a while I began to miss what I had during my first semester, someone who actually
cared about me and wanted to be with me for more than just sex. I often hear numerous complaints in
college about not being able to find a significant other. This new style of dating, or hookup culture,
lacks a sense of respect and doesn t allow for an emotional closeness with those students find
attractive. It encourages college students to suppress their emotions in order to gain sexual intimacy
and that wanting a committed relationship is a thing of the past. Why has courtship and traditional

The Effects Of Advertising On Youth s Psychology
Professor Jeff Richards once said Creative without strategy is called art, but creative with strategy is
called advertising. This quote is basically stating that advertisements use a lot of techniques and
strategies to convince and persuade audience. Particularly advertisements use psychological feelings
to persuade you positively or negatively towards a product. Advertising affects youth s psychology by
triggering feelings that make you want to buy their product.
First, corporations work on multiple strategies specifically in the field of pschology that might even
change your life forever positively or negatively .For example, time.com states that Companies get
you lost and confused. It s not an accident that grocery stores are often laid out unintuitively. Losing
focus makes people spend more on impulse purchases, says expert Martin Lindstrom, who has
conducted studies on marketing strategies. Getting interrupted during shopping also makes you less
price sensitive, according to research co authored by marketing professor Wendy Liu at UC San
Diego. That s because when you return to look at products after a distraction, you have a false sense of
having already vetted them, she says. In addition these strategies have been tested by specialists which
can change your life negatively by making you forget what products you actually need and make you
concentrate on things that look attractive. An additional fact from www.enotes says Advertising can

Polar Bear Evolution Is a Continuing Story Essay
Polar Bear Evolution is a Continuing Story
The polar bear, the largest land carnivore in North America, one of the largest animals in the world
and a favorite at zoos worldwide, has, over the years, adapted to its harsh Arctic environment. The
appropriately named ursus maritimum or sea bear usually lives between 15 and 18 years in the wild
and spends most of its life on ice. It is the most recent of the eight bear species. The first polar bear
was a brown bear subspecies, with brown bear dimensions and brown bear teeth. The polar bear
evolution was rapid due to the small population and extreme pressure to survive. Even today, the polar
bear continues to evolve to better adapt to the harsh realities of Arctic life.
Today s polar bear ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Evolution of the polar bear also resulted in curved, needle sharp claws for clinging to ice and grabbing
prey. In addition, they developed large, partially webbed paws to assist with swimming. On land, their
enormous paws are useful for traveling across loose snow and the paws provide a bigger area to
spread their weight across on thin ice. Another adaptation is the polar bear s longer neck which is
needed to keep their head above water when swimming (Polar Bear Evolution 1995). All of these
characteristics, unique to the polar bear, have been part of its evolution.
The hearing and eyesight of polar bears is quite similar to human beings, however, over the years, the
polar bear developed an extraordinary sense of smell. According to Canadian Wildlife magazine, polar
bears can smell seals at ranges up to 32 kilometers (2002). They can smell through thick snow and
even through ice. This unique ability was an important part of the evolutionary process for survival in
Arctic conditions where vegetation is severely limited and food may be miles away.
The favorite food of the polar bear is the ringed seal, however if hungry enough, they will eat other
breeds of seals including bearded, harp, hooded and harbor. Polar bears will also eat beluga whales
and walrus (Field Guide 2002). At times, they will even eat eggs, crabs and kelp (Milius 1994). The
polar bear is strong enough to lift a beluga whale, several times its own weight, out of the water for a

Preventing Musculoskeletal Disorders In The Workplace
The Seriousness of MSD Occupational health hazards are conditions in a workplace environment that
pose a threat to the physical or mental health of an employee working there. Unfortunately,
occupational health hazards are very common, however, providentially; many organizations have been
established in order to prevent these tragedies from occurring. One of these great organizations is the
Worker s Health and Safety Centre; Ontario s designated health and safety training center. In recent
times, WHSC has taken specific initiative on taking action to prevent the occupation ergonomic
hazard, causing musculoskeletal disorder. Due to the fact that Musculoskeletal Disorders may cause
employees to suffer from uncomfortable pains to developing critical disabilities, it is extremely
important for employers to ensure that they eliminate any hazards in the working environments, and
train their employees. An ergonomic hazard in the workplace can occur when a worker repeats the

developing muscular exhaustion in their lower back, shoulders and neck. Employers must ensure that
their employees are able to recognize the signs/symptoms in order to seek treatment before developing

Hepatitis A (HAV)
Around us, in us, and on us there are organisms that we cannot see; microorganisms. Some of these
living beings can be necessary or neutral to our health. However, other microorganisms can cause us
infections or diseases, we call them parasites. Each type of parasite targets a specific part of the body.
The Hepatitis A virus (HAV) causes specific damage to the liver that can cause the Hepatitis A
infection. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, HAV is found in the stool of
people who have Hepatitis A. It is usually spread by close personal contact and sometimes by eating
food or drinking water containing HAV. (Anonymous, 2011, para.2) HAV can be easily spread from
person to person just by one not washing their hands properly before handling food or water.
Symptoms of Hepatitis A include Flu like illness, jaundice (yellow skin or eyes) and, severe stomach
pains and diarrhea. (Anonymous, 2011, para.3) These symptoms affect the daily lives of those who
have the disease. Many adults would have to stay home from work for many days to even weeks due
to the illness and to prevent further spread of Hepatitis A. Also, many children contract the disease as

International Standard For Quality Management Systems
Introduction
This document is an overview of the ISO 9001:2008 international standard for quality management
systems developed by the International Organization for Standardization with the intent to give
specific requirements to companies and organizations on methods to enhance customer satisfaction
and meet statutory and regulatory requirements by improving effectiveness and performance of their
quality management systems. The overview will cover the requirement, certification procedures and
benefits of ISO9001 certification.
History
Quality management systems owe their basis to the the military industry. In fact the origins of
ISO9000 series of standards dates back to fifties, during the development of a nuclear submarine in
the US which had issues with contractors causing delays and quality breakdowns. As the result of the
research of that project the foundations of quality management were developed and other important
military standards were born such as NASA s and British Defence s quality management standards. In
1971 the British Standard Institute applied a QMS to electronics industry with the BS 9000 and, later
on, in the manufacturing industry in 1979,publishing the BS 5750 from which the ISO9000 series of
standard, published in 1987, is heavily based. After its revision in 1994 the ISO 9000 added separate
ISO 9001, 9002 and 9003 standards for different industries becoming the reference quality
management system standard in different nations and

Multicultural Education in the Classroom
The Benefits of Multicultural Education in the Classroom I have grown up with Education being my

educational experiences shape us as adults. Five years ago, I found myself accepting a position as a
Toddler teacher in a government facility. To describe it simply, I was a fish out of water. I had
experience with children, but not with children so small. This experience taught me a great deal about

The substantial task of desegregation did not come without its struggles. Parents were faced with
issues of involvement in their child s education due to distance between their child s school and home.
Some schools reported vandalism and student frustration in regards to the change of scenery. In 2001,
busing for Charlotte students ended, but not without leaving a legacy. Since the termination of busing,
student test scores continue to rise, even surpassing those of other urban school districts such as Los
Angeles, Chicago, and Houston (NPR, 2004).
Though mandatory busing ended, school districts continue to encourage the multicultural movement
by providing magnet programs for families who would like their child to attend another school. The
concept is the same as busing; however, participation is voluntary. Economically, the gap is
narrowing, balancing our communities. Forty percent of African Americans consider themselves to be
middle class, seventy five percent own their own homes, and two parent households earn just thirteen
percent less than Caucasian parents (Thernstrom, 1998). There are improvements to be made as the
economy continues to control and group together families within the same income bracket. Many
times, this binds families to certain schools with no other options available. Statistics show that from
1993 to 2003, there was a similar outcome regarding the schools middle class families attended. Out

Analysis Of The Article Reinventing The Veil
The role of the veil in Persepolis
One of the most controversial topics concerning Muslim women s rights is the idea of the veil. It is
believed by some Muslims that the veil is an Islamic obligation that all Muslim women must adhere
to. But nowadays, the veil can have different meanings that are not necessarily religious. In her article
Reinventing the Veil, Leila Ahmed addresses some of the different meanings that the veil can have.
Marjane Satrapi explores one of those meanings in her animated autobiography Persepolis (2008). In
Persepolis, Marjane tells the story of her rebellion against the Iranian Islamist regime that takes over
Iran, oppresses women, and forces them to wear the veil. What was interesting to me was seeing
Marjane wear the veil without being oppressed, although she does not believe in it, and is being forced
to wear it. In Persepolis, Marjane Satrapi escapes being a subject to the Iranian Islamist ideology by
establishing her individual identity through transforming the veil from a means of oppression into a
means of feminist rebellion.
In an interview conducted by MovieWeb, Marjane notes that the film isn t political, historical or
sociological. The film simply holds a humanistic message that says that human beings anywhere is the
same, and they have the right to live (Satrapi.) This humanistic message is what we see Marjane
fighting for in the film. She is striving to live a normal life, and one of the things that help her do that
is the veil. She

Firearms Legislation across the States and its...
The first question to be considered in this paper is the problem of similarity of firearms legislation
across the states and its correspondence with the federal legislation. The hypothesis is that, no matter
how many acts were enacted by the local governments in addition to the federal legislation, the
general idea of the basic federal legislation on this matter has been preserved, and there are no
dramatic changes in the main approaches. The second question arises whether the diversity of firearms
legislation across the states is a consequence of different rates of gun violence, the variations in
demographics and cultural backgrounds, or the political influences and conventional approaches to
this problem. The hypothesis of the study is that no increase in gun violence within separate states
with stricter or laxer firearms legislation has been even observed, so there is no direct correlation
between gun violence rates and the adoption of new laws regulating the gun ownership and sale.
The third research question relates to the most important reasons of such diversity in the firearms
legislation amid the states and localities. It relates to the historical, cultural, and political backgrounds
of different states. The most important effect on this diversity is produced by the political views
supported in separate states, and it is unlikely that cultural and social backgrounds, demographic
factors, or the racial content of the population have sufficient influences.

Why Homework Is Homework
There are many students who realize that it is important to get good grades. But those students are also
stressed, exhausted, and frustrated. How would you feel if you had to study for more than three hours
a day just to earn a good grade? If you re a student, you probably fall into the category of those who
do not have time to do things other than school. You may also feel as though homework doesn t
actually do anything. Most students get so busy with activities outside of school and just simply do not
have time to do homework or study for a test for 5 hours. So ask yourself, is all of this necessary? Or
can all of this unnecessary stress be avoided?
Of course, nobody truly knows if homework is actually effective or not. It may be stressing student
out for no good reason. Many students said they often do homework they see as pointless or mindless
in order to keep their grades up. Homework should have a purpose and a benefit. It should be designed
to actually teach kids instead of stress them out. It would be one thing to have as much homework that
is assigned if students actually learned or benefited from it, but it doesn t do anything besides worry
them.
In addition, most kids do not have hardly any time to do anything other than school related things. All

Reflection Of Falsettos
Falsettos, a musical written by William Finn in the 1980 s, is the story an unorthodox and highly
dysfunctional Jewish family living in New York at the end of the 1970 s. At the center of the show is a
confused middle aged man named Marvin, who introduced us to his ex wife Trina and current lover
Whizzer along with his precocious 10 year old son Jason. Throughout the course of the show many
different issues plague the family like the new family format, gay rights and the AIDS crisis that when
the show debut in 1992 were considered controversial. When the show as revived in 2016, it examined
these issues in a different light and brought forth a new way of understanding.

Scotland s Great Boundary In Brave By Pixar
Welcome to Scotland! In the movie, Brave by Pixar, the story of a mother and daughter s struggling to
communicate is infused with Scottish traditional clothing. Striving to preserve many Scottish
traditions, Pixar showcases Scotland s great symbol the tartan and masters the art of the great kilt.
Capturing some of the essences of Scotland s culture, Brave allows us a peek into a part of Scotland s
past and its family s histories. Following the tale of a mother and daughter that struggle to see eye to
eye, Pixar uses a storyline that crosses every culture boundary. In Brave, the daughter Merida is a
strong willed young girl, determined to make it on her own. Running wild in the forest surround her
castle with her bow and arrow, Merida does not want to grow up and receive responsibility, but she
just happens to be a princess. The Queen, Elinor, is caring, loving, and only wants what is best for her
family. She is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A great kilt is a thick woolen cloth made up of two loom pieces sewn into a width of 60 inch and up to
590 inch long. Left as an unaltered garment that would be gathered into pleats and secured by a wide
belt on the bottom and the top half was draped over your left shoulder. The kilt could be used for
protection against the weather and even used as a blanket if needed. Under the kilt, the men could
either wear a shirt or not. The pattern that decorates the kilt can be arranged in different colors and a
variety of strips of different widths, known as Tartan. In America, a tartan is known as the pattern,
plaid. Evidence suggest that tartan and kilts have been around since the 5th or 6th Century, but didn t
come into common use until the 1500 or so. Each clan creates their pattern of tartan to help identify
themselves. Tartan is one of the most important symbols of Scotland, and many wear it in many styles

Barnes And Noble Case Study Solution
Barnes Noble was originally founded as a book printing company in 1873 in Wheaton, Illinois. In
1917, the company opened its first bookstore in New York City. However, in 1974, the company fell
on hard times and was bought by Leonard Riggio. Barnes Noble eventually become the largest
bookstore by 1996, offering discounted books. By the late 1990s, Barnes Noble was faced with a new
challenge, the Internet; customers were able to order their books cheaper online and read them without
going to a physical bookstore. This forced Barnes Noble to reevaluate its strategy and its future
direction in order to stay competitive in the bookstore industry. Barnes Noble narrowed its problems
down into two major issues. The first issue was whether or not the company should split its two
business lines, having one line for digital and online business and the other serve as the more
traditional brick and mortar stores. The company also needed to determine the best way to allocate its
resources so that it could compete aggressively in the market. The second issue facing the company
was whether it was well suited to make these necessary changes independently or if it would need
some allies in order to achieve success. Because Barnes Noble was strictly a publisher and retailer, the
company didn t have the knowledge or experience to independently build an e reader for the online
market that could compete effectively; it needed to partner with another company that could build a

Successes And Failures Of American Policy Towards The GCC...
Topic: U.S Arab relations: Assessing the successes and failures of American policy towards the GCC
since 2008.
For the United States, the Gulf region remains one of the most geo strategically important locations in
the world for diplomatic, intelligence cooperation, and business opportunities such as hydrocarbons
and arms. This strategic cooperation has provided the region some stability, particularly with the rise
of Iran and the Shi a crescent and the chaotic outcome of the war in Iraq. The council members have
also relied on the United State to fend off some of the domestic challenges to the existing regimes that
are both internally and regionally rooted.
The Gulf houses half of the world s oil reserves and a third of the natural gas. The Gulf States still
continue to supply the international markets with a significant amount of the hydrocarbons. The
stability of the region is crucial for the stability in the global oil markets. The Gulf also hosts one of
the most strategically and important choke points in global trade, The Straits of Hormuz, which moves
about 35% of the global seaborne oil, natural gas and other trade goods.
According to Taimur Khan from the National World who wrote about a report that was published by
the United States State Department they praised the GCC countries for their strong regional and
international counterterrorism cooperation. The findings were that the UAE had the greatest progress
in cutting off illegals flows of money to

Disarmament, Demobilization, And Reintegration Of Rebel...
Tori Topic B: Disarmament, Demobilization, and Reintegration of Rebel Groups in Latin America
Less than eight percent of the global population resides in Latin America and the Caribbean, yet
approximately thirty three percent of the world s homicides occur in this region (Watts). More than
60,000 people have been killed by Drug Trafficking Organizations alone over the past 10 years, and
more than 26,000 have gone missing (Morris). Jordan recognizes that a significant portion of the
homicides in Latin America stem from the actions of rebel groups and, as a firm supporter of peace,
urges the international community to address the issue through Disarmament, Demobilization, and
Reintegration (DDR). To do so, the global community must shape the effectiveness and improvement
of DDR, as well as specific types of rebel groups such as gangs and drug cartels. Jordan believes that
by addressing these issues, the international community can assist Latin America in the restriction of
the influence and proliferation of rebel groups.
Although Jordan is not in close proximity with Latin America, it is invested in the issue, as the nation
itself is affected by rebel groups in the Middle East. Jordan does not currently have a presence in Latin
America concerning DDR, however, it is experienced with the concept within its own region,
specifically concerning Syria and Turkey (Piro). Jordan has a moderating effect on rebel groups in
much of the Middle East, and is a supporter of free syrian

Levi s Not by Jeans Alone
With other companies starting to encroach upon the Jeans market share, Levi s decided to introduce a
new product. With the goal to gain profits, Levi s pursued diversification with the new product. This
product was formal clothing for men.
Levi s divided the consumers into five segments based on demographics, attitudes and beliefs. Q2 and
Q1 appeared to be desirable target segments, however, Levi s decided to focus on the Q2 consumers,
the classic independent males. These consumers were well dressed, cared about their appearance,
shopped alone and mostly at specialty stores. They weren t price sensitive and preferred wool/wool
blends in conservative colors.
In ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Levi s decided to place their product in department stores as they had good relations with the retailers
due to their volume sales of jeans. They did not have any real relationship with the specialty stores
where the independent male shopped. Rather than placing their new products which would be
considered as high end in these specialty stores and where they would be among the lower price range,
they chose to place their products in the department stores where their products showed a deviation
from the regular Levi formula and were considered very pricy as compared to other high end
department store brands such as Haggar s. This price raised some concerns among the retailers as they
were unsure if Levi s formal wear would move out of the stores at a required pace. Also, due to price
quality inference, if Levi s was placed in a specialty store, the Q2 customer might prefer to buy a more
expensive product. Levi tried to sell these formal clothes in the same stores as their casual clothes for
the same segment of customers. Customers saw these formal clothes at the same place priced higher
than the casuals, and therefore found them to be expensive.
Due to the above reasons and lack of promotion, Levi s achieved only 65% of their sales target. They
promoted the wrong product under their brand, for the wrong price at the wrong place. They failed to
understand the needs of their customers.
Levi s would have been able to avoid these mishaps if they changed their target

History Of Bimbo Bakeries US
Bimbo Bakeries USA, headquartered in Horsham, Pennsylvania is the United States affiliate of Grupo
Industrial Bimbo, founded in Mexico City, Mexico. Though Grupo Bimbo is now a multinational
corporation, it began as a single family owned bakery in Mexico City called El Molino . Lorenzo
Servitje Sendra worked with his father in the family bakery throughout his childhood, but when his
father died in 1936 he had to take over. Lorenzo was educated and ambitious, and together with three
of his family members devised a plan to increase the scope of their business. They bought five
delivery vans to deliver their breads, wrapped in plastic to preserve freshness, to various small stores
daily. Customers loved their product and within a few years they had increased production and were
expanding outside of Mexico City.
By 1955 they had a fleet of 100 delivery trucks. They were growing fast and organized their
operations as Grupo Industrial Bimbo in 1965. They were exporting their breads, crackers, cookies
and other baked goods to South America, Portugal, and Spain. But the principals at Grupo Bimbo saw
the untapped potential of the huge consumer market in their neighbors to the north, the United States
(Thain, 2015).
A corporate growth trajectory into the U.S. was carefully planned, and with the passage of the North
American Free Trade Act in 1994 Bimbo was ready to act. How did this small group of determined

Analysis Of The Poem Evo Morales
If you would ask any Bolivian person, what does Bolivia mean to you? They all probably state:
Bolivia is our treasure! And then they might finish with the statement: Viva Bolivia! which means live
Bolivia. But again, what does Bolivia mean to you? What makes Bolivian so proud? Martín Sivak in
his book: Evo Morales. The Extraordinary Rise of the First Indigenous President of Bolivia delivers a
brief biography of the son of Bolivia Evo Morales, who probably is the most important and fascinating
political figure in Latin American in the twenty first century so far. It recognizes that Evo Morales
government is the most important political movement in modern Bolivia, and that Evo Morales played
a fundamental role in the establishment of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Martín Sivak seeks to project a direct and straight forward perspective in his study of Evo, whom he
knew quite well for some time. The subtitle made me expect to read a kind of biography celebrating
the advent of some holy man into Bolivia. But it is nothing like it. The text does not approach the
biography of a saint. On the contrary, the account is down to earth and Evo Morales description makes
it seem like he comes out of the book. The narrator appears to be a close acquaintance of the President
and his text is all the more credible that most of it pertains to events he personally attends or directly
witnesses. His objective is to preserve a genuine image of Evo Morales, the real person, not a fake
image of the president, neither that of a saint of the poor in Bolivia (that in deep he is). The way how
the book is made does not relentlessly expose Evo s flaws. Instead, it reports the details in a matter of
fact way, warts and all.
Martín Sivak does not take any position on how present Evo Morales in his book while he is recording
Evo Morales life in his daily bases.
He recognizes Evo as a human being worry of his people rather than another political worry in his
hands. Sivak acquires acknowledgment of personal, national, political and economical matters of
Morales and his administration by traveling with him. His administration focused on the
implementation of leftist

The Developmental History Of Nosql And The Fundamental...
Abstract
The demands on database technology have been ever expanding since its introduction in the 1960 s.
Today traffic on the internet requires that millions upon millions of records be stored and queried each
second. Data must be highly available and quickly retrievable. These requirements put together have
given rise to new forms of database technologies collectively called NoSQL or Not Only SQL .
NoSQL eschews the strict guidelines that govern the creation and function of traditional relational
databases. These guidelines are put aside in order to rise to the new demands of an increasingly
interconnected world. The rigorous standards and data definitions of relational databases give way in
order to provide the ability to rapidly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
NoSQL is able to address the massive traffic loads experienced by database servers at corporations
that specialize in data processing like Google, Facebook and Amazon. NoSQL technologies can
provide near constant availability, massive user concurrency and lightning fast responses. There are
four primary NoSQL database implementation types being used today: document based, wide column
(or columnar), key value and graph. The different properties of SQL and NoSQL databases will be
examined and an overview of each NoSQL implementation type along with an example will be given.
ACID v. BASE: Eventual consistency Standard SQL databases adhere to what are commonly called
the ACID properties. This means that the database must be atomic, consistent, isolated and durable.
Atomic means that each attribute cannot be broken into sub groups. Consistent means that the
database displays only the latest data; there are no older versions of data present within the database
unless by design. Isolated means that no transactions will interfere with one another; i.e. two
concurrent users changing the same data in the database will not end with incorrect results; the
transactions will be processed separately. Durable means that once changes have been made they will
remain in place and not revert to their prior state (Pritchett, 2008). The ACID properties can be crucial
to certain business models; financial transactions might require

Mann Act And Prostitution In Asia
Human trafficking came about during the Africa slave trades long before our times with the Europeans
and throughout the late 1600 more countries started to get involved. Therefore, human trafficking
begins to expand over time because of slavery, people wanted money, racism, and to be control. The
1900 s the White Slave Traffic which I believe is now called Mann Act came about which was made
so that transporting women across the state lines, child pornography, and prostitution would be a
crime. I believed it was ONLY for white women at the time however it was changed so that it can be
for both genders, races and more. In Japan during 1932 they did a lot of human trafficking and where
women in Asia was forced into it. Women were housed in

We should not have homework because it has a negative effect on home life. For example, Robert
Marzano and Debra Pickering educational researchers state that, homework interferes with other home
activities. With all the homework kids have, they get almost zero time to themselves, plus those kids
who play sports may not have time for homework right away and are forced to do it later, right before

  • 2. Art As A Driving Force For The Abstract Of Art Art can be for art s sake; it does not need to be representational. Jackson Pollock was an influential American painter who became a driving force for the abstract expression movement. His belief that his art comes from within was an impetrative idea behind his style. His beliefs have a huge impact on how I view art, create art, and inspired me for my final piece. Pollock was born in Cody, Wyoming in 1912. His father, LeRoy Pollock, was a farmer who raised his children in Arizona and Chico, California. Pollock was heavily influenced by Pablo Picasso, Digo Rivera, and Native American art. All of these influences contributed to Pollock s unique style. In 1929, Jackson Pollock studied at the Students League in New York under Thomas Hart Benton. He learned techniques that helped him understand space, line, color, and much more. In mid 1940 s Pollock introduced his famous drip paintings. These paintings were such a radical approach to the changes that happened during and after WWII. Media latched onto his methods and Life soon releases an article titled Jackson Pollock: Is he the greatest living painter in the United States? The content was mocking and respectful. Vogue magazine caught onto the avant garde artwork and joined the trend publishing fashion photographs in front of the beautiful drip paintings. These widely known companies persuaded society to accept the new idea to art. Pollock struggled with depression and alcoholism. His premature death in August of 1956, ... • 3. Technology And The Post Office Mail as Technology Mail is a form of technology that has stood the test of time despite all of the changes technology has experienced in communication. This technology has endured despite email, social media, financial loss and the enduring threat of privatization. The U.S. Post Office has remained due to one important philosophy which is that every person in the United States no matter who, no matter where has the right to equal access to secure, efficient, and affordable mail service. (Potter, 2007). This government agency has been around for more than 240 years and remains a strong institution that society is dependent on for communication. (USPS, 2007). Although the Post Office has lost revenue over the years, they use ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Most other correspondence ran between the colonists and England, the Netherlands, or Sweden. The flow of mail needed a more accurate system so the General Court of Massachusetts appointed Richard Fairbanks tavern in Boston as the first repository for mail brought from or sent overseas. The need for communication began to grow (USPS, 2007). Beginnings The first official post office emerged in the year 1683 in Pennsylvania. In the south, communication was largely dependent on slaves who transported messages through plantations. In 1692, Thomas Neale appointed Governor Andrew Hamilton as his deputy postmaster general. Although this position was filled by many, it was Benjamin Franklin who made revolutionary changes to the post office. He brought new surveys, new milestones on principle roads as well as newer and shorter routes. As a result, the organization turned its first profit in 1760 (USPS, 2007). This improvement was one of many that would take place within the Postal Service. Mail in this time period, ran into issues of privacy when Goddard from the Crown s service warned Letters are liable to be stopped opened by ministerial mandates, their Contents construed into treasonable Conspiracies; and News Papers, those necessary and important vehicles, especially in Times of public Danger, may be rendered of little avail for want of Circulation. • 4. History of Homo Erectus Essay When one thinks of history, they usually refer to their family s history, going back several generations. Some might refer to a point in history, dating back several hundred years. For instance, one might ponder their favorite historical event, like the Civil War, the Spanish Inquisition, or the Creation of the State of Israel. Seldom do people talk about the first men, called Homo erectus. Scientists are the only ones who have dedicated time to this interesting subject. The study of the first men will teach us so much about our distant history, our connections, our strengths, and ourselves. About 2 million years, Homo erectus evolved. They evolved from Africa and later spread throughout the world. Homo erectus was the first smart ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When they first saw fire, whether it came from lighting or something else, they feared it and thought of it as terror. They saw fire destroy the world and make it worse, but eventually they understood the features of fire and they used it for their own good. Once they discovered fire, they used it for everything. Fire changed their lives drastically and made life easier. They could use fire to cook their food, to keep them warm during the winter, and use it for light. Fire was also very dangerous. They would burn themselves or even destroy their homes. Fire was used as a weapon. Fire was used to hunt for food. The first men realized that animals are scared of fire. They started forest fire and when the animals would get scared, they would run around. As soon as this happened, the hunters would jump on them with speaks and stone axes and would kill them to eat. Eating is important to man because it is what keeps them alive. Early humans worked hard to get their food. Food was most important to them and it was what they worked for. • 5. Life Cycle of a Plant, Dominant and Recessive Traits Paragraph One: Description of the life cycle of a plant from seed to seed (information about the seed, germination, growth, development, flower, pollination, fruit, seed; information is accurate) The life cycle of a plant from seed to seed is not that complicated, it consists of a few steps. This all starts with a seed. The first step is for the seed to germinate and turn into a seedling. Once the seedling is formed, it will then grow into an adult plant with petals. These petals will then sprout to flowers, which will produce fruits. The flowers will go to a process of fertilization called pollination, that s when the pollen is moved from anthers to stigmas. Since the pollen contains sperm and it is passed on to the ovules in the ovary, the sperm moves down to an ovule, which contains eggs. Fertilization then happens when the sperm fuses with the egg in the ovule. The petals and stamens then fall away creating a fruit. These fruits contain seeds, and once the plant has died, the seeds will fall to the ground and repeat this cycle. So to summarize, the seed goes through a process called germination and forms into a seedling, which then grows roots and forms true leaves. This plant continues to grow until flowers are formed. The next step is a process called pollination and fertilization, which then forms a fruit. The fruit will release the seeds and the process repeats. Paragraph Two: Description of the purposes of the different parts of the plant (Information ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Essay change 1. How does Sassoon show the depression of the young soldier? The depression of the young soldier before he commits suicide is clearly displayed in the poem. At the start of the poem, the image of a happy, young, and perhaps rather naïve boy is placed before us; Simple tells us that he is innocent, perhaps rather naïve, and doesn t understand the concept of war. Grinned at life in empty joy suggests to us that he was pleased by anything, a happy carefree young man. He was young and had no worries because he enjoyed life and did as he pleased. He made life seem easy and happy even when times were bad. It also given us a notion of how immature the boy turned into a soldier and sent to war must have been. Slept soundly through ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The structure of the poem also adds to the stark change the boy has suffered throughout the war. Sassoon uses the same structure that a children s rhyme usually has, and this is perhaps intended to emphasize that this boy, turned into a soldier and driven to suicide, was still just a boy. The depression of the young soldier is also shown to be shared by many; the eye catching title Suicide in the Trenches is evidence of this fact. The word trenches further emphasizes that the depression the young soldier feels is felt throughout all the trenches, and therefore many others in war. The juxtaposition between the first two stanzas adds to the effect intended upon the reader by Siegfried Sassoon. He wants us to feel the harsh reality of war; cold, unjust, harsh and depressing, and the image of a happy young man driven to suicide by war certainly emphasizes this point. This jarring contrast makes the boy s death a lot sadder and brings out sympathy in the reader. 2. What is Sassoon s view of the crowds which greet the soldiers on their return from the trenches? The last stanza is very effective in displaying Sassoon s view of the crowds. Throughout this stanza a bitter, sarcastic, sneering and rather angry tone is used; You smug faced crowds The use of you makes the reader feel as if Sassoon is addressing the reader, naming us all guilty of the smug faced cheering and clapping of the ... • 7. Loneliness And Alienation In The Painted Door By Sinclair... Loneliness and alienation can often have a strong effect on people, especially when facing normal societal challenges. People will act differently and have different reactions if they aren t around others facing these problems, this is illustrated well by Sinclair Ross in two of his stories. His story The Painted Door focused on a farmer s wife named Ann. It begins with her husband, John, leaving to help his father at his father s farm while Ann begs him to stay. He leaves anyway but stops to visit their neighbour, Steven, and asks him to go visit Ann to keep her company. Out of loneliness and desperation Ann cheats on John with Steven. The next morning, they find John frozen to death and Ann sees paint on his palm, revealing John had seen Ann and Steven together and left back into the cold to meet his demise. He also does everything he can to keep the protagonist out of the box stall, It s just kind of a harness room now. Up till a year ago I kept a stallion. (Ross 418) Throughout the story it is strongly hinted that Vickers is keeping the body of the girl in the box stall. He is very reluctant to let the protagonist see inside and tries to draw the protagonists attention away from the box stall. • 8. The Main Characters Of The Pianist s The Pianist The Pianist is based on the true story of a renowned Polish Jewish musician who lived through World War 2 in Warsaw, Poland. At the start of the war, Jewish families had to wear white arm bands with a blue Star of David and were only allowed a small amount of money. Families were sent off to concentration camps in packed railroad cars and the families who remained in Warsaw starved to death. The only reason why the main character, Wladyslaw Szpilman, was able to survive was through the people who helped give him food, shelter and basic necessities. The kindness of others helped Wladyslaw survive through the wartimes. Kindness is defined as, an individual that possesses a sympathetic or helpful nature. One of the main themes within The Pianist is that kindness can be found in the most unexpected places, even in Nazi Germany. Wladyslaw Szpilman found help from countless people, even from Germans who were not Jewish. Irena Sendler was a social worker who lived in Warsaw. She was a part of the Polish Underground and a Holocaust resistance. It is estimated that she saved more than 2,000 Jewish children from the Ghetto. She was awarded the Righteous among the Nations in 1965. Irena Sendler said, To save one Jewish child, ten Poles and two Jews had to risk death. To betray that same child and the family that hid him required only one informer or, worse still, one blackmailer. The risk of being caught by the SS was not prison, but death death for the entire family. (Sendler) ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Another reason people mask themselves is so that they can change how society views them, therefore people don t get to be who they really truly are. In the book, Me Before You , written by Jojo Moyes, Will Traynor doesn t get to live the life that he wants to live. This life he wants to live is the one he had before the motorcycle accident, where had had become mostly paralyzed. This Throughout the story shows that Will masks himself therefore because he can t be who he truly is and who he wants to be. In the book, Will explains to Louisa about his old self, with his memories and experiences. He recalls a time when he was in Paris, going through the cafés and the city square. Louisa mentioned her taking him to Paris, but Will described that he wants to go as his old self and not the person he is now because it causes too much pain. He had a great life before, full of fun and sports, but now, everything is different. The mask is keeping Will from having a good life and the one that he was meant to have. • 10. How Did Elie Wiesel Survive Q2. I believe that Elie was able to survive the concentration camps for a number of different reasons. For instance, Elie had a reason to live, which kept him going and wanting to stay alive. In addition, he was afraid of death, many of the prisoners were so afraid to die that they fought to stay alive until the very end. Elie was also physically able which had allowed him to pass through the several selections that they had throughout the book. Elie was not the only one of the Jews who had made it out of the horrendous death camps that they had been trapped in, others had also escaped with their lives. Many of the Jews survived based on similar qualities, views, and traits. It was quite astonishing that anyone was able to survive such gruesome camps. If I were put in their position, I am unable if I would be able to survive to tell the stories of the concentration camps. I believe that mindset and perseverance was the main reason as to why some survived and others did not. Adding to this, if you did not have the will to live, there would be absolutely no point. Mental illness is a topic that has plagued my family for generations. It has been a common theme in every relationship I have ever had. Although initially I assumed this circumstance would make it immensely easy to choose a topic for this paper, as it turned out it was the opposite. I first considered Oppositional Defiant Disorder, as I thought surely this is the right topic so that I may take my findings to the father of my children to show him that he is desperately in need of accepting the help I feel he needs. A person exhibiting an impairment in identity might criticize himself excessively, have deep and troubling experiences of emptiness or possibly even experience dissociative states under extreme stress. A person experiencing an impairment with self direction would exhibit signs of inability to follow through or possibly even set goals, and have no drive in regards to career plans. The Diagnostic criteria for this disorder demand that 5 of 9 criteria are met. Often a person with this disorder will exhibit signs of suicidal tendencies or self mutilation. • 15. Loyalty, Sacrifice And Compassion Of The Heart The word loyalty means fidelity to law which is generally applicable in the case of the Sovereign of the State. It is one of those noble qualities that is found not only in humans, but in pets as well, such as dogs, horses or even elephants in some countries. But in a broader sense, it means having steadfastness in allegiance to a person, people or a cause, or to an even bigger picture: one s country. It involves obedience, sacrifice and compassion of the heart. Loyalty is a broad term, which can be applied to one s family, their locality or their country. Being a loyal per¬son could mean that they are ready to sacrifice even their own life for the sake of whatever they are loyal to. They bear a moral character. A truly loyal man cannot tempt to be bribed or to deviate from his own path. Loyalty is being absolutely dependable in all circumstances. In this world, there are only a few instances of truly loyal personalities. Loyalty is common among the courageous soldiers and servants. There are instances of pets such as dogs, horses or elephants that will give their lives out of loyalty for the interest of their master. In Homer s The Odyssey, loyalty is a major theme that underlies the entire story. He wrote many stories and is often referred to as a highly under rated author for British literature. His war experiences were apparent in the novellas that he wrote, and often gave readers a gloomy, disturbed feeling. Either they make peace and work together to get freed, or they could just stay angry at one another and risk never being rescued from under the tree. Therefore, the three main conflicts displayed in The Interlopers are Man vs. Man, Man vs. Nature, and Man vs. self. Every genre holds within itself a message, and this message shows a glimpse of the past as well as the possibilities of the future. People everywhere love music for these reasons and more, and I love one style of music in particular: a style that brings me comfort, makes me question the world, and gives me insight as to who I am. Classical music describes a genre that, for me, means more than just notes on the page or in the air; the music speaks to a deep and wonder seeking part of me that cannot quite be described using words. The true evolution of primitive music began around 1750 during the Classical Era in Europe, with the pioneering works of Mozart and Haydn, as well as many others. Deriving from these great composers, the genre further evolved during the Romantic and Modern Eras by encompassing a deeply emotional and expressive side unlike anything heard before. Indeed, these periods of music entail a vast and rich history of pieces written to please royalty, soft and haunting works of lost love, and vast orchestral suites that try to capture the majesty of the natural world. Such vast detail and eloquent composition allows the listener of classical music to immediately be transported to another time, another world, and especially another mindset. Courtship and chivalry are dead, or extremely hard to find, and a majority of college students are involved in the hookup culture. A hookup is a nonromantic encounter with a friend or acquaintance that involves an unspecified degree of sexual interaction, (Carpenter and DeLamater 129). When I first started college, I had a very nice relationship that lasted about 3 months. When we both decided to just be friends, it dawned on me that I could sleep with whomever I wanted to. During my second semester in college, I more than doubled the amount of guys I slept with in high school and I know why I did it. I let myself engage in hookup culture because I wanted to rebel against my parents, have some sense of intimacy without commitment, experience new things, and it was so much fun to brag about with my girlfriends. However, after a while I began to miss what I had during my first semester, someone who actually cared about me and wanted to be with me for more than just sex. I often hear numerous complaints in college about not being able to find a significant other. Another adaptation is the polar bear s longer neck which is needed to keep their head above water when swimming (Polar Bear Evolution 1995). All of these characteristics, unique to the polar bear, have been part of its evolution. • 33. International Standard For Quality Management Systems Introduction This document is an overview of the ISO 9001:2008 international standard for quality management systems developed by the International Organization for Standardization with the intent to give specific requirements to companies and organizations on methods to enhance customer satisfaction and meet statutory and regulatory requirements by improving effectiveness and performance of their quality management systems. The overview will cover the requirement, certification procedures and benefits of ISO9001 certification. History Quality management systems owe their basis to the the military industry. In fact the origins of ISO9000 series of standards dates back to fifties, during the development of a nuclear submarine in the US which had issues with contractors causing delays and quality breakdowns. As the result of the research of that project the foundations of quality management were developed and other important military standards were born such as NASA s and British Defence s quality management standards. In 1971 the British Standard Institute applied a QMS to electronics industry with the BS 9000 and, later on, in the manufacturing industry in 1979,publishing the BS 5750 from which the ISO9000 series of standard, published in 1987, is heavily based. After its revision in 1994 the ISO 9000 added separate ISO 9001, 9002 and 9003 standards for different industries becoming the reference quality management system standard in different nations and ... • 34. Multicultural Education in the Classroom The Benefits of Multicultural Education in the Classroom I have grown up with Education being my catapult through life; I love it. I love to study children and figure out how they learn and how our educational experiences shape us as adults. Five years ago, I found myself accepting a position as a Toddler teacher in a government facility. To describe it simply, I was a fish out of water. I had experience with children, but not with children so small. This experience taught me a great deal about learning in our great world. I was amazed to witness the pure relationships between children of all races in that little toddler room. All color aside, the children seemed to embrace each other s differences and celebrate in their dedicated ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The substantial task of desegregation did not come without its struggles. Parents were faced with issues of involvement in their child s education due to distance between their child s school and home. Some schools reported vandalism and student frustration in regards to the change of scenery. In 2001, busing for Charlotte students ended, but not without leaving a legacy. Since the termination of busing, student test scores continue to rise, even surpassing those of other urban school districts such as Los Angeles, Chicago, and Houston (NPR, 2004). Though mandatory busing ended, school districts continue to encourage the multicultural movement by providing magnet programs for families who would like their child to attend another school. The concept is the same as busing; however, participation is voluntary. Economically, the gap is narrowing, balancing our communities. Forty percent of African Americans consider themselves to be middle class, seventy five percent own their own homes, and two parent households earn just thirteen percent less than Caucasian parents (Thernstrom, 1998). There are improvements to be made as the economy continues to control and group together families within the same income bracket. Many times, this binds families to certain schools with no other options available. Statistics show that from 1993 to 2003, there was a similar outcome regarding the schools middle class families attended. Out of a study of one ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. Analysis Of The Article Reinventing The Veil The role of the veil in Persepolis One of the most controversial topics concerning Muslim women s rights is the idea of the veil. It is believed by some Muslims that the veil is an Islamic obligation that all Muslim women must adhere to. But nowadays, the veil can have different meanings that are not necessarily religious. In her article Reinventing the Veil, Leila Ahmed addresses some of the different meanings that the veil can have. Marjane Satrapi explores one of those meanings in her animated autobiography Persepolis (2008). In Persepolis, Marjane tells the story of her rebellion against the Iranian Islamist regime that takes over Iran, oppresses women, and forces them to wear the veil. What was interesting to me was seeing Marjane wear the veil without being oppressed, although she does not believe in it, and is being forced to wear it. In Persepolis, Marjane Satrapi escapes being a subject to the Iranian Islamist ideology by establishing her individual identity through transforming the veil from a means of oppression into a means of feminist rebellion. In an interview conducted by MovieWeb, Marjane notes that the film isn t political, historical or sociological. The film simply holds a humanistic message that says that human beings anywhere is the same, and they have the right to live (Satrapi.) This humanistic message is what we see Marjane fighting for in the film. She is striving to live a normal life, and one of the things that help her do that is the veil. She ... • 36. Firearms Legislation across the States and its... The first question to be considered in this paper is the problem of similarity of firearms legislation across the states and its correspondence with the federal legislation. The hypothesis is that, no matter how many acts were enacted by the local governments in addition to the federal legislation, the general idea of the basic federal legislation on this matter has been preserved, and there are no dramatic changes in the main approaches. The second question arises whether the diversity of firearms legislation across the states is a consequence of different rates of gun violence, the variations in demographics and cultural backgrounds, or the political influences and conventional approaches to this problem. The hypothesis of the study is that no increase in gun violence within separate states with stricter or laxer firearms legislation has been even observed, so there is no direct correlation between gun violence rates and the adoption of new laws regulating the gun ownership and sale. The third research question relates to the most important reasons of such diversity in the firearms legislation amid the states and localities. It relates to the historical, cultural, and political backgrounds of different states. The most important effect on this diversity is produced by the political views supported in separate states, and it is unlikely that cultural and social backgrounds, demographic factors, or the racial content of the population have sufficient influences. ... How would you feel if you had to study for more than three hours a day just to earn a good grade? If you re a student, you probably fall into the category of those who do not have time to do things other than school. You may also feel as though homework doesn t actually do anything. Most students get so busy with activities outside of school and just simply do not have time to do homework or study for a test for 5 hours. So ask yourself, is all of this necessary? Many students said they often do homework they see as pointless or mindless in order to keep their grades up. Homework should have a purpose and a benefit. By the late 1990s, Barnes Noble was faced with a new challenge, the Internet; customers were able to order their books cheaper online and read them without going to a physical bookstore. This forced Barnes Noble to reevaluate its strategy and its future direction in order to stay competitive in the bookstore industry. Barnes Noble narrowed its problems down into two major issues. The first issue was whether or not the company should split its two business lines, having one line for digital and online business and the other serve as the more traditional brick and mortar stores. The company also needed to determine the best way to allocate its resources so that it could compete aggressively in the market. The second issue facing the company was whether it was well suited to make these necessary changes independently or if it would need some allies in order to achieve success. This strategic cooperation has provided the region some stability, particularly with the rise of Iran and the Shi a crescent and the chaotic outcome of the war in Iraq. The council members have also relied on the United State to fend off some of the domestic challenges to the existing regimes that are both internally and regionally rooted. More than 60,000 people have been killed by Drug Trafficking Organizations alone over the past 10 years, and more than 26,000 have gone missing (Morris). Jordan recognizes that a significant portion of the homicides in Latin America stem from the actions of rebel groups and, as a firm supporter of peace, urges the international community to address the issue through Disarmament, Demobilization, and Reintegration (DDR). To do so, the global community must shape the effectiveness and improvement of DDR, as well as specific types of rebel groups such as gangs and drug cartels. Jordan believes that by addressing these issues, the international community can assist Latin America in the restriction of the influence and proliferation of rebel groups. Although Jordan is not in close proximity with Latin America, it is invested in the issue, as the nation itself is affected by rebel groups in the Middle East. They did not have any real relationship with the specialty stores where the independent male shopped. Rather than placing their new products which would be considered as high end in these specialty stores and where they would be among the lower price range, they chose to place their products in the department stores where their products showed a deviation from the regular Levi formula and were considered very pricy as compared to other high end department store brands such as Haggar s. This price raised some concerns among the retailers as they were unsure if Levi s formal wear would move out of the stores at a required pace. Levi tried to sell these formal clothes in the same stores as their casual clothes for the same segment of customers. Isolated means that no transactions will interfere with one another; i.e. two concurrent users changing the same data in the database will not end with incorrect results; the transactions will be processed separately. Durable means that once changes have been made they will remain in place and not revert to their prior state (Pritchett, 2008).
