Cellulitis is an acute inflammatory skin condition characterized by localized pain, erythema, swelling, and heat. It is caused by skin infections and seen more commonly in patients with diabetes mellitus due to several factors. Neuropathy, peripheral vascular disease, and poor glycemic control increase the risk by impairing the skin's ability to heal and the body's immune response. Hyperglycemia can also promote cellulitis through multiple pathogenic pathways such as increased oxidative stress, impaired blood flow, and reduced neutrophil function. Managing diabetes and these risk factors is important for preventing cellulitis.
