Racism Among Children Essay
In Finland and many western countries immigrants and some ethnic minorities are considered the
most likely victims of racism. Those studies which focus on immigrant children s experiences show
that in their everyday lives, RACE does indeed matter in many ways (e.g Howarth 2002, 2004;
Motsieloa 2003; Vestel 2004). However, in addition to immigrants and their children and people who
identify themselves as members of particular ethnic minorities, there is a growing number of children
of mixed parentage, many of whom may also face racism because of their visual difference ethnicity
or their name race , which may expose their transnational roots (e.g Gilbert 2005; Ifekwunigwe 2004;
Parker Song 2001). Racism has become an important topic also ... Show more content on

In the context of this research the concept of racism covers both the old race theories (ideas of the
existence and hierarchies of races) and those racializing discourses and practices by which these
doctrines and other essentialist ideas of people and cultures are produced and reproduced. Even
though racism is not always intentional, the idea of power relations is also important here. Racism is
about some people having the power to use racializing and essentializing ideas of different people and
cultures against some other people. The consequences of racism can be identified on social and
cultural levels ( for example, in the unequal distribution of goods and services, in racializing
discourses and representations of peoples and cultures), in face to face interaction in everyday
encounters (se e.g Ahmed 2002) and on a subjective level as racialized

Swing Dance Papers
The quotes For most people, social dancing begins in pleasure, and Of course, people sometimes feel
pressure to dance in ways that are otherwise associated with pleasure; social dancing can serve many
functions in a society, from Chapter 4 of Dancing: The Pleasure, Power, and Art of Movement (Jonas
2003), peaked interest in me when thinking of all the various dance forms that we have talked of in
class and even those outside of class. One in particular that has interested me the most is swing dance.
With family member involvement in the past and having multiple friends take part in the Swing Dance
Club here on the Wayne State University Campus for pleasure, enjoyment and social interaction has
made me want to go more in depth about it. With the help from academic sources and knowledge from
class lectures I will be researching the history of swing dancing, the forms of swing dancing, and what
gender roles take place within these movements. According to The Edinburgh University Swing
Dance Society of the Edinburgh University Students Association, Swing dancing is a style of dance
that was originated from Harlem, New York with Afro American Roots. Although originating with
Afro American Roots, I do know that many other cultures and races take part in this form of social
dance, and it is not segregated to one race specifically. When in the act of this dance, one should feel
as if they are swinging. Swing Dancing developed as a swing style from jazz music from around

Research Paper On Alice Walker
Alice Walker Essay In life, people care about their appearances and how they are seen in the eyes of
others. Alice Walker cares about how the world portrays her looks and her personality. She is
confident in her looks, but at the age of eight, she is involved in an accident. This accident alteres not
only her eyesight but alters the way she sees herself. Because she believes no one finds her pretty
anymore, she loses confidence within herself. Alice and I have a lot in common when it comes to this
type of situation. I was once in a situation very similar, but it is involving my teeth. An injury to my
jaw made my teeth shift, leading me to believe my smile is not as pretty as it once was. Eventually,
Alice and I both discover the true beauty within our flaws and feel happy once again. Alice feels
beautiful from a very young age.. She is full of herself and wants people to admire her. When she is
eight, her life changes. One of her older brothers shoot her in the eye with his BB gun. This causes her
go blind in her eye and causes the look of her eye to change. She no longer feels good about herself.
She feels ugly and her ugly feelings causes her to fill with angry emotions.
At the age of 14, her older brother and his wife take Alice to the hospital to have the scar tissue and
the cataract in her eye removed. She does feel better about herself but she did not feel the same as
when she was younger. Alice doesn t feel as happy as she once did, but her emotions

Dilantin Synthesis Lab Report
Abstract Dilantin is an antiepileptic drug by acting on the nervous system and this lab synthesized
pure Dilantin through a multistep process. The first step involves using the coenzyme, thiamine, as a
catalyst to synthesize benzoin. Benzoin is oxidized to benzil using NH4NO3 to regenerate amounts of
cupric acetate, followed by reaction with urea in a base to yield Dilantin. Experimental physical
properties and spectral data were analyzed to show relatively pure Dilantin synthesized. Introduction:
The purpose of this multistep lab is to synthesize the drug Dilantin, which is part of the hydantoins
family of drugs well known for their effects on the nervous system to reduce epileptic seizures.1 The

For benzil, the IR has sp3 C H, C=O and C=C aromatic stretch (Table 1) that correspond to the
literature6, however, there is also the presence of an O H peak that is not expected and is due to the
presence of unreacted benzoin. This helps to explain the low yield of Dilantin (20.9%) because not all
of the crude benzil would have reacted as some of it would have been benzoin. The Dilantin was
successfully synthesis as the final product showed N H, sp3 C H, C=O and C=C aromatic stretches

improve the yields of this multistep synthesis the procedure should be modified to allow a longer
reaction time to condense all of the benzaldehyde to benzoin in the first step as 1.5 h is not sufficient
as shown by the TLC. Furthermore, recrystallization should be performed after each synthetic step as
to remove impurities and potential side products that may

Social Class And The Middle Class Essay
Social class can be defined as a social construct which is used to describe a group of people with
similar levels of wealth, influence and status. They tend to have dramatically different values and
mannerisms to others groups, for example, the working class are seen as uneducated and unskilled
workers, whereas the middle class are seen as highly educated people with high incomes (Harcourt,
2016). Despite there being other social class groups, including, the upper class, this essay will explore
the portrayal of the working class, lower class, also known as the underclass , and the middle class in
reality television, using the example of Wife Swap.
The working class and the lower class groups have been increasingly visible on British television
screens in recent years, mainly because the increasingly popular genre of reality television features
them heavily (Morley, 2009). Debates have sparked on whether the use of ordinary people on such
programmes is democratising or exploitative. It could be argued that because the working class were
not on such programmes, audiences and society therefore had no access to them and their lifestyles.
However, the great exposure of working classes on reality television programmes now provides access
to them and allows people to observe and judge how they behave and how they live.
It is not a recent discovery that disadvantaged individuals, families and communities are portrayed in
negative lights by the media (Crossley and Slater, 2014),

Stereotyping And Stereotypes
Stereotyping someone without knowing someone can bring unwanted conflicts and wrong
impressions. The other college students talked about me, as they tended to, not knowing that I could
hear what they were saying. Look at her, she looks mean and rude. The look on my face must be ugly,
I suppose. Stereotypes always upset me and when the other girls were talking about me was no
exception. After hearing what was said I began to grow angry as the elevator started to go up. I was
alone, so I started thinking and talking out loud to myself about what was said about me, when the
elevator stopped on my door room floor, I realized I shouldn t be that upset, because it was not true. I
do not have to prove anybody wrong, or explain myself to anyone until they talked to me to see what
they thought of me was wrong. I continued to walk in the direction of my dorm room. I got to my
dorm room and I introduced myself to one of my roommates and her family. I picked my bed,
dressers, and computer desk. I started unpacking and moving my furniture around to accommodate
me. One by one, I put my clothes in the dressers neatly while my family brought the rest of my things
into the room. After a couple of hours, I was done unpacking and all I had to do was go to the store
and get food, drinks, and other things that I needed. I came back to my dorm and it was time for
parents to leave, so I walked my family out and talked to them and told them that I will call them later.

Havisham by Carol Ann Duffy Essay
In Havisham, Carol Ann Duffy creates an interesting character. Write about the way the character is
created, and compare this with the way other characters are created in three other poems. You should
compare it with one poem by Simon Armitage and two poems from the pre 1912 poetry bank.
In Havisham, Carol Ann Duffy explores the character of Mrs Havisham and develops her by using
vivid imagery and metaphors. She starts the poem with Beloved sweetheart bastard which is an
oxymoron, used to display her mixed emotions about love and the man who jilted her. The plosive
sounds of b and d reinforce her angry tone and helps show how she mocks romance. She is displayed
as a bitter, hateful character who seeks revenge, shown with not a ... Show more content on

Havisham and The Laboratory link not only because of their sinister characters but because both
poems have a strong use of colours. In Havisham colours are used to create a contrast between a white
veil which is the colour of virginity and purity, and a red balloon which can be the colour of love and
sex but also for anger, hatred and embarrassment. Duffy uses this as a way to explore all the feelings
and emotions of the character and could be interpreted as Duffy trying to make the audience have
sympathy for Mrs Havisham. The Laboratory uses colours to create a superficial character who doesn
t see the poison as dangerous or deadly, but as some sort of treasure. She refers to gold oozings and
the exquisite blue as if to think of them as magical potions and not poisons. This is done to create an
almost naivety to her character and suggests that she doesn t understand how dangerous her actions
are. The Laboratory is set out in rhyming couplets to create a playful rhythm to show the character s
childish behaviour, and how she may not be fully aware of her dangerous her actions are. As the poem
starts, the speaker mentions only one woman who she wishes to poison. Yet as the poem continues,
she mentions other women who

CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background
Basel Capital accord is a capital adequacy framework developed by the Basel committee. In 1988, the
Basel Committee decided to introduce a capital measurement system commonly referred to as the
Basel Capital Accord. This system provided for the implementation of a credit risk measurement
framework with a minimum capital requirement of 8% on banks Risk Weighted Assets (RWA). The
1988 framework is also known as Basel I . Since 1988, this framework has been progressively
introduced not only in member countries but also virtually in all other countries.

The rationale of Basel II was to reduce the scope for regulatory arbitrage and make regulatory capital
requirements more risk sensitive by incorporating advances made in banks‟ internal risk management
practices in calculating regulatory capital requirements. The „International Convergence of Capital
Measurement and Capital Standards: A revised Framework‟, known as Basel II, was agreed in 2004
and consisted of three pillars corresponding to minimum regulatory capital requirements in Pillar 1,
the supervisory review process in Pillar 2 and market discipline in Pillar 3. 1. First Pillar
The first pillar deals with maintenance of regulatory capital calculated for three major components of
risk that a bank faces: credit risk, operational risk, and market risk. Other risks are not considered fully
quantifiable at this stage.

The Possible Links Between Cellphone Uses and Tumors
1. How do cellphones work? These work by the signals which are transmitted to and can be received
from the base station (usually located close by) through RF wave. RF wave is a type of
electromagnetic wave with a frequency range of 300GHZ widely used in radio communication and in
applications such as heating. RF waves along with FM waves, microwaves, visible light and heat
come under non ionizing radiation. RF does not cause cancer. These waves are different from
radiations i.e. x rays, gamma rays and UV rays. These radiations can destroy the chemical bonds that
make up DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid). At higher levels the RF waves can raise the temperature of the
body. But the RF waves emitted by the cell phones are generally of lower energy level and hence it
does not affect body temperature. 2. How are people exposed to RF waves? RF waves require more
energy for long distance transmission. The energy at the transmitting antenna in cellphone will greater
than the energy received by the receiving antenna of the cellphone (loss of energy during long distance
transmission). When a customer communicates using cellphone which is in contact with their ear
(either left or right) the maximum energy at the transmitting antenna of the cellphone during
communication will be directly absorbed by that ear. The ear that is closest to the phone will absorb
more energy that the ear that farther away. It also depends on factors such as: 1. Amount of time the
cellphone is being used

The Western Front And Storm Of Steel
All Quite on the Western Front and Storm of Steel are two of many influential pieces of literature that
reflect World War one from a German point of view. It is important to note that All Quite on the
Western Front is a work of fiction that is based on the events of the war, Were as Storm of Steel is
memoir that is based on the events of Ernst Junger on the western front. Junger is criticized that he
takes a positive stance on the war, were as Erich Remarque s novel tries to show the reality behind the
war. The two authors believed the Great war had effects on those who fought in it through the
influence of their perception of the war and how new technology had changed the way it is
understood. The psychological implications on the soldiers were a direct link between survival,
technology and their rural life style. This phenomenon can be seen in both Remarque and Jungar s
works. The memoir describes Junger experiences without restraint which results in a graphic book.
However, he constantly attempts to convey a position of noble courage in himself and his fellow
soldiers, even when Junger experiences situations of true horror. An Example of this can be seen when
he is marching into the Battle of the Somme, he seems more concerned with a clear description of the
events rather than reacting to it. In certain situations it almost seems that he was relying only on his
extinct rather than clearly processing what was happening. This was due to the constant exposure of

Micro Parties In Australia Essay
Micro parties have been apart of the democratic landscape in Australia for many years but rose to
prominence in Australia during and after the 2013 Federal election where the election delivered the
biggest Senate crossbench in modern history. Due to their size the micro parties have no real chance of
forming government but they do have a huge opportunity in influencing electoral outcomes.
Competition in any industry is positive and with the influx of micro parties in Australia, most having
an impact on the electorate and appealing to voters the new look Senate can be seen as a major win for
Australian democracy.

Larger and unpredictable cohorts of swinging voters now characterize our democratic system. Their
political preferences and voting intentions constantly change, often heavily influenced by a single
issue or narrower policy platform.
The major parties, as a result, become less flexible and responsive. They can be held up by procedural
delays, adherence to party rules or structures, and even the need for cabinet solidarity. All this suggests
micro parties may not be some kind of unwelcome or unrepresentative intrusion into our democratic
system, as conventional views would have it.
Criticism of the major parties has also been directed toward the type of candidate put up for election
by the major political parties. Matthewson (abc 2014) states that there has been an influx of the
professional political elite such as former political advisers, party apparatchiks and trade union leaders
who have very little real life experiences which alienates them from the general voters and makes
them difficult to relate

The hypothesis that I have states earlier is proven correct with the data I have collected. With higher
levels of surfactant, there was an exceedingly high increase in airflow. However, I was wrong about
airflow plateauing with increased surfactant. The more surfactant you added, there was increase in
airflow. It cannot be stressed enough how important surfactant is in the lungs. Without surfactant,
there are intricacies like alveoli collapsing, not enough airflow, and diseases for instance
pneumothorax or hyaline membrane disease. Approximately 50 years ago, John F. Kennedy, one of the

Such phenomenon would inflict pain when breathing, and evidently promote long term suffocation.
Many firefighters experience these types of symptoms when battling furious fires. The smoke and
chemicals that the firefighters breathe in actually evaporate a huge portion of their surfactant. That is
why in the news firefighters are reported suffering from smoke inhalation. They experience collapsed
alveoli and struggle breathing. It is also important to mention the complication that come along with
pneumothorax, and serious condition that involves aire between the lungs and intercostal muscles. We
know that when we breathe air flows down the trachea, into the bronchi, and spread throughout the
lungs. However, what happens when there is a hole punctures in one of the pathways for air. This
phenomenon would cause air to accumulate in the chest, instead of going into the lungs. We expand
our chest to increase volume, and decrease the pressure inside. Because atmospheric pressure is
exceedingly higher that it is in the lungs, air will flow from high pressure to low pressure. This
phenomenon cannot happen with

Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell
Nineteen Eighty Four written by George Orwell is a dystopian novel set in a fictional totalitarian state
of Oceania, where the brainwashed citizens are under constant surveillance, and public mind control
dictated by Big Brother, the Party leader. Thus, any independent thought by any individual or group
would severely be punished by the state as a Thought Crime . Punishments could be severe ranging
from reeducation and torture to vaporization meaning death. Around the same year of the publication
of Nineteen Eighty Four, coincidently, a Soviet trained guerrilla fighter named Kim Il Sung became
the founder of a new country the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea. Following the Korean War,
Kim Il Sung successfully created the world s most impenetrable cult of personality, which succeeds on
to his grandson, Kim Jon Un s generation and continues its dictatorial regime today. There is no way
of avoiding the incalculable numbers of billboards and posters with military slogans and propaganda.
Throughout the nation, television sets are hardwired to receive a single signal, broadcast by the state.
Thus, each households and public places are installed with cameras and wiretaps surveilling any
individuals against the leader and its Party s policies will be terminated along with the future family
members. Even the actual building the Great Leader Kim Il sung has created. All of these are

Essay on Origins of the Watch making Industry
Origins of the Watch making Industry
The production of watches was a major industry of Great Britain for hundreds of years. Watch making
originated in Europe in the early 16th century, when coiled springs were first used to power clocks.
Clocks were powered by weights originally, and therefore remained stationary.
The springs meant that clocks could be moved for the first time, and soon, German clockmakers
started to make very small clocks, which are considered as the earliest watches made. Watch making
was the most advanced line of the clock making industry, which developed when
Blacksmiths started introducing their skills with metal to clock making. Watches were being made in
Great Britain from around the middle of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Prescot made rough watch movements and it is often mistaken that
Prescot made the actual watches. This means that it was just the actual working parts of the watch that
were roughly finished and assembled, the movements would then be shipped to finishers all over the
country, and overseas, where they would be taken apart again, finished and put into cases, usually
made of precious metals such as gold and silver.
The nature of the industry
Watch making was an example of what is known as a cottage industry .
Cottage industries were a tradition of Lancashire, and included any type of manual work where goods
were produced at home. The goods produced by a cottage industry were often on a piecework basis.
That is when the goods are made to order when required. An order would be placed with the producer
for a certain number of items, as and when required. All those involved in the watch making industry
could earn a good wage doing this king of work properly and on time. Each craftsman would have one
specialty in particular, spring making, watch hand making and so on. The various parts would come
from each workshop and then these would be sent to an assembly workshop, where the rough watch
movement would be constructed from all of the parts. These would then be sent to be finished (that is
polished and made ready to be fitted into a case). Twenty individual branches of watch making were
open during the mid Victorian

The Dollar Diplomacy And The Spanish American War
Many things came out of the expansion era such as the Big Stick Policy, the Dollar Diplomacy, and
the Spanish American war. Roosevelt said Speak softly and carry a big stick; you will go far. which
meant that if diplomacy failed, the U.S. would not hesitate to use military force to protect its interests.
The Dollar Diplomacy, which Taft favored, was based on the idea that economic ties were the best
way to expand American influence. The Spanish American War started on April 21, 1898, the United
States declared war against Spain following the sinking of the Battleship Maine in the Havana harbor
on February 15, 1898. The U.S. also supported the ongoing struggle of Cuba, Puerto Rico and the
Philippines for independence against Spanish rule.

When Students Should Declare Their Major
When Students Should Declare their Major The post millennial generation has a lot more to consider
when choosing a future career than past generations. Students graduating from high school come from
a place with strict rules and an inflexible syllabus. These students are only now given the freedom to
think for themselves and to discover who they are, what their skills are and what they are passionate
about. It is more beneficial for students to establish a foundation in an array of disciplines before
declaring a major. A foundation is defined as the basis or groundwork of anything. (Dictionary.com,
LLC) Since youth (the average first or second year student is about 18 to 20 years old) have
developing minds that change continuously, thus their interests will change according to who they are
at that given time.
The cost of living has become unaffordable, causing most people to start or end their lives later than
planned. Even if a student graduates from a high end university with an impressive degree it may
guarantee absolutely nothing in today s society. Since the cost of living is so high, the next generation
after to have no choice but to postpone retirement in order to keep a roof over their heads. With later
retirement and overpopulation in the world, the post millennial generation is not guaranteed a stable
job anymore and even if they do have an amazing education, they still have the risk of becoming
homeless. There is so much more to choosing a career than

Leonid Afremov’s Painting, Alley by the Lake
Secure romantic relationships are based on trust and understanding. They are developed over time and
tend to last the longest; however, just because a couple feels secure doesn t mean the couple is
necessarily happy. While every healthy relationship shines with rays of trust and happiness, shadows
often lurk filled with lies and deceit. A painting, entitled Alley by the Lake, by Leonid Afremov
portrays the secure, yet secret, side to relationships.
Happiness holds relationships together. Finding someone who makes feelings arise, plastering a
smiling on one s face, draws any person in. It s the warmth one wants and the intensity one longs for.
Without this feeling, there is no reason to become involved. There would be no relational ... Show

Reds and oranges are colors that one links with warmth and feeling. The warm colors in the painting
represent the love that is present which ultimately connects back to intimacy and companionship.
Emotional security takes the longest to develop. It s putting one s full trust into the relationship. A
study was done where adults, involved in a romantic relationship, were asked to take a questionnaire.
The questionnaire focused on how emotionally secure a partner was in their relationship. They related
these findings back to infant mother research that was previously concluded by other researchers.
These researchers also blamed the outcome of their experiment, where 56% felt emotionally secure in
their relationships, on prior love experiences (Hazan Shaver, 1987, p. 511 515). This study further
proves how difficult it is for a couple to reach emotional security, after having immoral past love
experiences. While the painting cannot easily express this aspect of happiness, the couple walking arm
in arm in an empty park shows the safety they feel with one another.
Beyond happiness, as the romantic relationship evolves, and the peak of the happiness fades, trust can
start to falter. Secrets form and lies build. These secrets start small, but they can grow. A study, whose
focus was on the sexual betrayal by a romantic partner despite an agreement to be monogamous

Analysis Of Las Meninas
Las Meninas RLR
Jonathon Brown uses more of a historical approach to Las Meninas and reflects on the artist intentions
instead of the painting itself. He of course describes the Characters and tells the reader that Antonio
Palomino could identify pretty much all the characters since 1724. He says the foreground the child
Margarita Maria, Next to her are two maids of honor, or the meninas. One meninan is Maria Agustina
Sarmiento, who is giving a glass of water to the princess. The other maid is Isabel de Velasco. In the
middle ground, we see Marcela de Ulloa he has an unidentified bodyguard next to him. To the right
corner of the painting are Mari Barbola and Nicolas Pertusato they are the dwarfs. There is a large
canvas to the left and the painter is behind it. In the mirror in the back of the painting shows the King
and Queen, it is King Philip IV and Mariana of Austria. There is an open door in the painting were
Jose de Nieto is standing, that is the aposenrador of the queen (Brown, 88).
Now Jonathon Brown thinks the setting and characters do not have much importance on what the
painting really means. Of course, he says that the painting is to show respect to the Court and the King
and Queen and show just how important they but this cannot tell us much about the painting itself.
The painting is to show the artist himself as noble as the people of the court as well. It s trying to
depict a picture that shows the value of the artist himself royal epiphany (Brown, 92) all

The article states that mouring and grief are experienced by everyone no matter where one comes
from. It also said that mourning is the response to some illness of someone , death of a family member

Elisabeth stated that bereavement takes a length of time and different steps to overcome all the
intensity level of pain. She said, there are five stages of grieves and the stages do not necessarily occur
on a specific order to someone. She said , people go through these stages before arriving to the stage
of peace and acceptance to die ,but not everyone have the chance to reach this stage before the die.
Elisabeth further expressed that the death of a loved one usually help to prepare people for their own

there is hope, there is life. (Axelrod, 1969). She said many people do not experience all the stages of
death and there is no believed that everyone most go through death stages in sequential the same order
but it is more of a guide to grieving for someone to know the stage of grieve one is experiencing.
She said that everyone grieve differently, some show their emotions to grieving outwardly with

Use of Violence as the Main Reason for Mussolini s Consolidation of Power from 1922 1928
Introduction
· Several reasons why Mussolini was able to consolidate his power between 1922 and 1928, such as
Mussolini?s actions and strategy, co operation from the elite and the failure of his opposition.
· However, I believe the most significant reason was the use of violence.
Paragraph 1: Use of Violence
· July 1923: The Chamber, surrounded by Blackshirts, passed the Acerbo Law. This said that the party
gaining the most votes in an election, provided that they obtained at least 25% of the votes, would take
two thirds of the seats.
· April 1924: Militia violence during the election. 1 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
· May 1924: Matteotti Crisis ? the murder of Matteotti led to the Aventine Secession and Mussolini
setting up his dictatorship.
· Can see it was a very significant reason.
Paragraph 2: Mussolini?s Actions and Strategy
· November 1922: Mussolini?s first speech as Prime Minister to the Chamber of Deputies. With its
mixture of references to legality and intimidation it appealed to both the elite and the ras.
· July 1923: Acerbo Law. A good tactic however it may not have been passed without the intimidation
of the Blackshirts. Therefore violence is a more important factor.
Paragraph 3: Failure of the Opposition
· April 1924: Whilst the government drew up its list of approved candidates for the election,
conveniently for Mussolini the opposition remained split, and the Communist Party rejected a PSI
proposal for a joint Left list. The various Liberal factions also failed to agree on one list.
· Aventine Secession: third of the MP?s leave parliament and try to form a new government. They
think the King will dismiss Mussolini. However this was a tactical error as the official parliament now
has no critics of Mussolini.
· Potential critics kept quiet. However this is mainly due to their fear of the Blackshirts, and therefore
I believe Blackshirt violence was a more important

Essay The Use of Symbolism in the Film The Piano
Screen and Visual images are important in the film; The Piano directed by Jane Campion. The screen
and visual images are represented by Motifs. They are related to the dominating characters which
makes them important.
Firstly, Fingers as signifiers. The films very first image is a point of view shot looking through Ada s
fingers as if they frame her world. They are signifiers of expressiveness. Ada is mute and her fingers
are her tools of communication. She communicates using sign language with her fingers. Ada also
uses her fingers to play the piano. Without her fingers, Ada would not be able to continue with her
passion. Fingers are the chosen means of her affectionate sex play when she caresses her husband, and

He certainly identifies the piano with Ada. He strokes it and dusts it while naked, he tries to pry into
its secrets like a lover. Ada even snaps the lid shut on his fingers when they stray into its recesses. It
becomes the bargaining tool in their growing love affair and when she sends him her love note it is
written on a piano key. At the end, the piano is considered a coffin and Ada throws it overboard of the
Maori canoe, to get rid of her past. To start a new life.
Clothes also are important motifs. They are signifiers of Ada s restricted life and of her potentiality for
sexual expressiveness. The clothes represent Ada s time in life.
At times, her bonnets and skirts are heavy and encumbering, signs of the manner in which Victorian
women were held in tight to constrained social roles.
Later, they are easily removed when necessary at Baine s house. At the start of the film, Ada and Flora
look like peas from the same pod with their identical clothes, in Ada s case showing a quiet, dark
power. More positively, her petticoat becomes a tent for her and her daughter on the beach. When
Flora shifts allegiances, she takes to wearing angel s wings, a gift from the parson s daughters, and a
sign that she is now being judgemental of her Mother s sins.

Economic Traditionalism As The Antithesis Of Economic...
Economic traditionalism is essentially the antithesis of modern capitalism. Within this framework,
work was viewed as a necessary evil (Kalberg 2011a: p. 418). It was simply the means through which
people acquire the economic needs necessary for survival. Therefore, work and money did not take
precedence over one s family, community, and leisure. The tasks themselves were based on custom
and tradition, and were independent of the individual himself. That is, work did not constitute one s
self identity. Luther was an extreme proponent of this ideology. He was suspicious of wealth and
asserted that money should only be enough to live a life of integrity. Weber ([1905] 2011) describes
Luther s reservation:
Luther was convinced that people of every status can become saved...Therefore, the striving for
material gain that goes beyond one s own needs, Luther argues, must be a symptom of one s lack of
grace. Indeed, because striving for gain appears to be possible only at the expense of others, this
pursuit must be viewed as an unequivocal abomination. (P. 103)
Thus, Luther was critical of those who utilized work to feed their avarice. Instead, asceticism was
highly valued; as people were advised to renounce gluttony and avoid succumbing to their physical
and sensual pleasures. Luther was also wary of those who attempted to venture outside of their calling.
This was viewed as tinkering with God s will and undermining His plan for the individual s salvation.
Therefore, the

The Characteristics Of Sundiata An Epic Of Old Mali
Sundiata an epic of old Mali is a story about Sundiata Keita who was the founder of the Mali Empire
in West Africa. This story is an oral tale of a young king s rise to power and is narrated by Djeli
Mamoudo Kouyate who was a griot or traditional storyteller. Griots are known to be ancient
historians, keeping track of their culture and passing down this information which lasts, generation
after generation. In Sundiata an epic, Kouyate expresses how important it is to the Malinke culture to
preserve this oral history. I teach kings the history of their ancestors so that the lives of the ancients
might serve them as an example, for the world is old, but the future springs from the past says
Kouyate ( 1 ). Preserving Malinke culture and history was ideal in teaching the younger generation of
their rich heritage and what it means to live the life of a Malinke. Among numerous different things,
the epic is certainly an investigation of what qualities characterize Sundiata as a hero, and by
augmentation, what excellencies are heroic. The most glaring is his strength. Notwithstanding when
he is disabled as a youngster and can t walk, he has strong arms. Be that as it may, when he at long last
stands, he astounds everybody, bowing a tremendous pole to a bow and pulling a tree up by its
foundations. Another quality is his boldness, most obviously enlightened by his expertise and
coarseness in a fight. Be that as it may, Sundiata has more than an animal s strength he

The Constitution And The Legislative Branch

a very important concept; it ensures us that no one branch of government becomes too strong. Every
branch of government has to check and balance the other two. Every society needs some sort of law to

The three main types of committees are standing, select, and joint. Standing committees have
legislative jurisdiction, consider bills and issues and recommend measures to handle said issue. They
also have oversight responsibilities to monitor programs within their jurisdictions. Select committees
generally are established by a separate resolution of the chamber. Most often, select committees
analyze rising issues which do not fit within an existing standing committees jurisdiction, or that cross
a boundary line between two standing committees. Select committees could be permanent or

they could be called special committees. Joint committees are made up of members of both the house

The Dangers Of Repressing The Id In Judith Guest s...
The Dangers of Repressing the Id:
An ACT Analysis of Judith Guest s Novel Ordinary People Unexpressed emotions will never die.
They are buried alive and will come forth later in uglier ways. This quote by Sigmund Freud
demonstrates the dangers of repressing or bottling up feelings and emotions. His notion of repression
is a commonly discussed topic in psychology, as its dangers can be undermined. Though some people
are fully capable of living with such repression, not having an outlet when facing difficult emotions
can lead to severe mental breakdowns ranging from sorrow to depression. The novel Ordinary People
by Judith Guest delves into repression by suggesting, from a Psychoanalytic perspective, that constant
repression of the Id psychic zone leads to the formation of multiple layers of dangerous defense
mechanisms which can only be controlled by active reversal during regression. Guest s intended
psychoanalytic theme can thus be approached by analyzing it in three separate segments, Conrad s
repression of his Id, Conrad s defense mechanisms and Conrad s regression. Firstly, Conrad s Id has
been nearly entirely repressed by his unconscious, leading him to lack the typical emotions that a
teenager of his age should be feeling. The Id is one of the psychic zones proposed by Freud and it can
be defined as humans unconscious source of instant gratification and animalistic emotions. It is
generally kept in harmony with other psychic zones in order to prevent it from

In America a good education is the difference between working at Walmart, and being a computer
programer at Google. A good education is one that has these qualities, it is enticing to the student, it
prepares the student for the world to come, and provides the student with facts that they can make
their own opinions on. Enticing is key to keep the student focus on school rather than other things. If
an education is not enticing

Fighter Interceptor Wing
Introduction Just shortly, after the end of World War II the United States Air Force realized they
needed a fighter jet to replace the highly popular P 51 Mustang. North American Aviation Corporation
was granted the contract to build these medium range, single seat, high altitude, multi purpose fighter
jet/bombers. There were over 6,000 of the jets produced between the two facilities in Los Angeles,
California and Columbus, Ohio. This plane was the first United States jet fighter with swept wings,
which allowed it to unofficially break the sound barrier on 1 October 1947. Five years later,
Jacqueline Cochran became the first woman to break the sound barrier flying a Canadian variant of
the F 86. Not only was the plane more ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As the technology advanced in China and North Korea the MiG 15 came in to play and was far more
superior than the piston engine aircraft the United States and UN forces were flying. One of the most
significant things about the MiG 15 is that with its superiority over the P 51 Mustang the United States
Air Force had to keep all of the B 29 Superfortress grounded due to the lack of security. The B 29
Superfortress had been a major game changer in World War II. The B 29 was designed for the high
altitude strategic bomber role. One of the B 29 s final roles during World War II was carrying out the
atomic bomb attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. After the F 86 Sabre was introduced in Korea, they
patrolled the area just south of the Yalu, the so called Mig Alley, in long figure eights, always turning
towards the north to keep from being surprised. The F 86 Sabre s and the MiG s were evenly matched.
Both had 6,000 pound thrust jet engines, and could go supersonic in a dive. The MiG was smaller, and
it could climb higher and faster. The Sabre was faster in level flight and in a dive, had a greater range,
and could turn tighter in a fast dive. The Sabre carried six 50 caliber machine guns, while the MiG
relied on a single 37 mm and two 23 mm cannon. (Sherman, Acepilots, 2011) With the facts that were
out about the MiG 15 the United States Air Force wanted to prove

Research Paper On Walden Comforts
Comforts
In todays society we have a lot of comforts that we take for granted. Our daily lives are filled with
plethora of gadgets, services, and machines that make our lives easier. Back in the mid 19th century
there where not as many comforts as we have today. However, you would still have given up luxuries,
if you decided to go live in a cabin in the woods. Henry D. Thoreau did just this when he built a house
on the shores of Walden Pond. I believe that he did this to define the limits of his own strengths and
connect with nature. This has made me come to reflect on what consequences do modern comforts
have on our understanding of ourselves, and if we are out of touch with nature. My theory is that there
are comforts that in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For this task he had to learn on his own about bricks and masonry therefore defining further his
creativity (Thoreau 162 63). In the end, his self built small cabin in the woods gave him the freedom
to observe and connect with nature at his leisure. Thoreau also gave up most social interaction. In
society, as it was back then and how it is now, social interaction is a great comfort. It allows for us to
satisfy our need to feel connected with other people and also share important information. At Walden
Pond Thoreau lived a mile away from his closest neighbor. Except for a few interactions when he
would go to town for needed supplies or people passing by close to his cabin, social interactions
where few. In this manner Thoreau was able to define his strength by showing his lack of reliance in
social interaction. In the absence of other people Thoreau was able to be left alone to think about and
connect with nature. If today we wanted to find out strengths and connect with nature, just like
Thoreau, are there comforts in our modern society preventing us from doing so? In my opinion there
are. As pointed out by Richard Fry in his article for Pew Research Center, some of the most prevalent
of this comforts are smartphones, cars (Fry). Smartphones are a great tool. The way we communicate
is so multifaceted thanks to our smartphones. We are able to not just call and text but also check
emails, video

Imine Synthesis Lab Report
The underlying principles of the imine synthesis reactions include isomerization, pH values, and the
importance of acids as catalysts. Imine formation begins with either an alkene or aldehyde that then
produces alkenes isomers.7 Imine formation generally produces a mixture of products with E or Z
conformation. This conformation is more commonly denoted as cis or trans. The trans product, or E,
forms when the highest priority groups are on opposite sides of the alkene double bond, which is the
more stable of the two conformations due to a lack of steric interaction wherein the molecules are
more separated allowing for free rotation about the double bond. In contrast, the cis, or Z, alkene
occurs when the highest priority groups are on the same side of the double bond, but the energy is not
evenly distribution in the molecule, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Using TLC analysis, the purity and polarity of the reaction mixtures were analyzed to determine the
sample used to obtain the IR and 1H NMR spectrums of the product. IR and 1H NMR spectroscopy
was used to characterize each molecule by determining functional groups present based on peak
identification and hydrogen positional characteristics in the molecules respectively. Melting point
analysis was also used to further understand and characterize the reaction mixtures with comparison to
literature values confirming its molecular structure. Reaction mixture 1 containing the molecular
sieves was found to be the purest and most polar of the three compounds as determined by TLC
analysis and spot location as it was the closest spot towards the bottom of the plate. Each compound
was characterized by four molecular motions observed IR and 1H NMR as identified by the multiple
functional groups present in the molecules and seen in the graphs

  • 2. Racism Among Children Essay In Finland and many western countries immigrants and some ethnic minorities are considered the most likely victims of racism. Those studies which focus on immigrant children s experiences show that in their everyday lives, RACE does indeed matter in many ways (e.g Howarth 2002, 2004; Motsieloa 2003; Vestel 2004). However, in addition to immigrants and their children and people who identify themselves as members of particular ethnic minorities, there is a growing number of children of mixed parentage, many of whom may also face racism because of their visual difference ethnicity or their name race , which may expose their transnational roots (e.g Gilbert 2005; Ifekwunigwe 2004; Parker Song 2001). Racism is about some people having the power to use racializing and essentializing ideas of different people and cultures against some other people. The consequences of racism can be identified on social and cultural levels ( for example, in the unequal distribution of goods and services, in racializing discourses and representations of peoples and cultures), in face to face interaction in everyday encounters (se e.g Ahmed 2002) and on a subjective level as racialized ... One in particular that has interested me the most is swing dance. With family member involvement in the past and having multiple friends take part in the Swing Dance Club here on the Wayne State University Campus for pleasure, enjoyment and social interaction has made me want to go more in depth about it. With the help from academic sources and knowledge from class lectures I will be researching the history of swing dancing, the forms of swing dancing, and what gender roles take place within these movements. According to The Edinburgh University Swing Dance Society of the Edinburgh University Students Association, Swing dancing is a style of dance that was originated from Harlem, New York with Afro American Roots. Although originating with Afro American Roots, I do know that many other cultures and races take part in this form of social dance, and it is not segregated to one race specifically. • 5. Dilantin Synthesis Lab Report Abstract Dilantin is an antiepileptic drug by acting on the nervous system and this lab synthesized pure Dilantin through a multistep process. The first step involves using the coenzyme, thiamine, as a catalyst to synthesize benzoin. Benzoin is oxidized to benzil using NH4NO3 to regenerate amounts of cupric acetate, followed by reaction with urea in a base to yield Dilantin. Experimental physical properties and spectral data were analyzed to show relatively pure Dilantin synthesized. For benzil, the IR has sp3 C H, C=O and C=C aromatic stretch (Table 1) that correspond to the literature6, however, there is also the presence of an O H peak that is not expected and is due to the presence of unreacted benzoin. This helps to explain the low yield of Dilantin (20.9%) because not all of the crude benzil would have reacted as some of it would have been benzoin. The Dilantin was successfully synthesis as the final product showed N H, sp3 C H, C=O and C=C aromatic stretches (Table 1) that correspond to the literature value6, but are less intense explained by the low yield. • 7. Social Class And The Middle Class Essay Social class can be defined as a social construct which is used to describe a group of people with similar levels of wealth, influence and status. They tend to have dramatically different values and mannerisms to others groups, for example, the working class are seen as uneducated and unskilled workers, whereas the middle class are seen as highly educated people with high incomes (Harcourt, 2016). Despite there being other social class groups, including, the upper class, this essay will explore the portrayal of the working class, lower class, also known as the underclass , and the middle class in reality television, using the example of Wife Swap. The working class and the lower class groups have been increasingly visible on British television screens in recent years, mainly because the increasingly popular genre of reality television features them heavily (Morley, 2009). Debates have sparked on whether the use of ordinary people on such programmes is democratising or exploitative. It could be argued that because the working class were not on such programmes, audiences and society therefore had no access to them and their lifestyles. However, the great exposure of working classes on reality television programmes now provides access to them and allows people to observe and judge how they behave and how they live. It is not a recent discovery that disadvantaged individuals, families and communities are portrayed in negative lights by the media (Crossley and Slater, 2014), ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Write about the way the character is created, and compare this with the way other characters are created in three other poems. You should compare it with one poem by Simon Armitage and two poems from the pre 1912 poetry bank. In Havisham, Carol Ann Duffy explores the character of Mrs Havisham and develops her by using vivid imagery and metaphors. She starts the poem with Beloved sweetheart bastard which is an oxymoron, used to display her mixed emotions about love and the man who jilted her. The plosive sounds of b and d reinforce her angry tone and helps show how she mocks romance. She is displayed as a bitter, hateful character who seeks revenge, shown with not a ... In Havisham colours are used to create a contrast between a white veil which is the colour of virginity and purity, and a red balloon which can be the colour of love and sex but also for anger, hatred and embarrassment. Duffy uses this as a way to explore all the feelings and emotions of the character and could be interpreted as Duffy trying to make the audience have sympathy for Mrs Havisham. The Laboratory uses colours to create a superficial character who doesn t see the poison as dangerous or deadly, but as some sort of treasure. She refers to gold oozings and the exquisite blue as if to think of them as magical potions and not poisons. This is done to create an almost naivety to her character and suggests that she doesn t understand how dangerous her actions are. The Laboratory is set out in rhyming couplets to create a playful rhythm to show the character s childish behaviour, and how she may not be fully aware of her dangerous her actions are. • 11. The Possible Links Between Cellphone Uses and Tumors 1. How do cellphones work? These work by the signals which are transmitted to and can be received from the base station (usually located close by) through RF wave. RF wave is a type of electromagnetic wave with a frequency range of 300GHZ widely used in radio communication and in applications such as heating. RF waves along with FM waves, microwaves, visible light and heat come under non ionizing radiation. RF does not cause cancer. These waves are different from radiations i.e. x rays, gamma rays and UV rays. These radiations can destroy the chemical bonds that make up DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid). At higher levels the RF waves can raise the temperature of the body. But the RF waves emitted by the cell phones are generally of lower energy level and hence it does not affect body temperature. 2. How are people exposed to RF waves? RF waves require more energy for long distance transmission. The energy at the transmitting antenna in cellphone will greater than the energy received by the receiving antenna of the cellphone (loss of energy during long distance transmission). When a customer communicates using cellphone which is in contact with their ear (either left or right) the maximum energy at the transmitting antenna of the cellphone during communication will be directly absorbed by that ear. The ear that is closest to the phone will absorb more energy that the ear that farther away. It also depends on factors such as: 1. Amount of time the cellphone is being used ... It is important to note that All Quite on the Western Front is a work of fiction that is based on the events of the war, Were as Storm of Steel is memoir that is based on the events of Ernst Junger on the western front. Junger is criticized that he takes a positive stance on the war, were as Erich Remarque s novel tries to show the reality behind the war. The two authors believed the Great war had effects on those who fought in it through the influence of their perception of the war and how new technology had changed the way it is understood. The psychological implications on the soldiers were a direct link between survival, technology and their rural life style. This phenomenon can be seen in both Remarque and Jungar s works. The memoir describes Junger experiences without restraint which results in a graphic book. However, he constantly attempts to convey a position of noble courage in himself and his fellow soldiers, even when Junger experiences situations of true horror. An Example of this can be seen when he is marching into the Battle of the Somme, he seems more concerned with a clear description of the events rather than reacting to it. In certain situations it almost seems that he was relying only on his extinct rather than clearly processing what was happening. This was due to the constant exposure of enemy ... The springs meant that clocks could be moved for the first time, and soon, German clockmakers started to make very small clocks, which are considered as the earliest watches made. They are developed over time and tend to last the longest; however, just because a couple feels secure doesn t mean the couple is necessarily happy. While every healthy relationship shines with rays of trust and happiness, shadows often lurk filled with lies and deceit. A painting, entitled Alley by the Lake, by Leonid Afremov portrays the secure, yet secret, side to relationships. Happiness holds relationships together. Reds and oranges are colors that one links with warmth and feeling. The warm colors in the painting represent the love that is present which ultimately connects back to intimacy and companionship. Emotional security takes the longest to develop. It s putting one s full trust into the relationship. A study was done where adults, involved in a romantic relationship, were asked to take a questionnaire. The questionnaire focused on how emotionally secure a partner was in their relationship. They related these findings back to infant mother research that was previously concluded by other researchers. These researchers also blamed the outcome of their experiment, where 56% felt emotionally secure in their relationships, on prior love experiences (Hazan Shaver, 1987, p. 511 515). This study further proves how difficult it is for a couple to reach emotional security, after having immoral past love experiences. While the painting cannot easily express this aspect of happiness, the couple walking arm in arm in an empty park shows the safety they feel with one another. Beyond happiness, as the romantic relationship evolves, and the peak of the happiness fades, trust can start to falter. Secrets form and lies build. These secrets start small, but they can grow. He says the foreground the child Margarita Maria, Next to her are two maids of honor, or the meninas. One meninan is Maria Agustina Sarmiento, who is giving a glass of water to the princess. In the mirror in the back of the painting shows the King and Queen, it is King Philip IV and Mariana of Austria. There is an open door in the painting were Jose de Nieto is standing, that is the aposenrador of the queen (Brown, 88). Now Jonathon Brown thinks the setting and characters do not have much importance on what the painting really means. Of course, he says that the painting is to show respect to the Court and the King and Queen and show just how important they but this cannot tell us much about the painting itself. At the end, the piano is considered a coffin and Ada throws it overboard of the Maori canoe, to get rid of her past. To start a new life. Clothes also are important motifs. They are signifiers of Ada s restricted life and of her potentiality for sexual expressiveness. The clothes represent Ada s time in life. • 41. Economic Traditionalism As The Antithesis Of Economic... Economic traditionalism is essentially the antithesis of modern capitalism. Within this framework, work was viewed as a necessary evil (Kalberg 2011a: p. 418). It was simply the means through which people acquire the economic needs necessary for survival. Therefore, work and money did not take precedence over one s family, community, and leisure. The tasks themselves were based on custom and tradition, and were independent of the individual himself. That is, work did not constitute one s self identity. Luther was an extreme proponent of this ideology. He was suspicious of wealth and asserted that money should only be enough to live a life of integrity. Weber ([1905] 2011) describes Luther s reservation: Luther was convinced that people of every status can become saved...Therefore, the striving for material gain that goes beyond one s own needs, Luther argues, must be a symptom of one s lack of grace. Indeed, because striving for gain appears to be possible only at the expense of others, this pursuit must be viewed as an unequivocal abomination. (P. 103) Thus, Luther was critical of those who utilized work to feed their avarice. Instead, asceticism was highly valued; as people were advised to renounce gluttony and avoid succumbing to their physical and sensual pleasures. Luther was also wary of those who attempted to venture outside of their calling. This was viewed as tinkering with God s will and undermining His plan for the individual s salvation. This story is an oral tale of a young king s rise to power and is narrated by Djeli Mamoudo Kouyate who was a griot or traditional storyteller. Griots are known to be ancient historians, keeping track of their culture and passing down this information which lasts, generation after generation. In Sundiata an epic, Kouyate expresses how important it is to the Malinke culture to preserve this oral history. I teach kings the history of their ancestors so that the lives of the ancients might serve them as an example, for the world is old, but the future springs from the past says Kouyate ( 1 ). Preserving Malinke culture and history was ideal in teaching the younger generation of their rich heritage and what it means to live the life of a Malinke. Among numerous different things, the epic is certainly an investigation of what qualities characterize Sundiata as a hero, and by augmentation, what excellencies are heroic. They are buried alive and will come forth later in uglier ways. This quote by Sigmund Freud demonstrates the dangers of repressing or bottling up feelings and emotions. His notion of repression is a commonly discussed topic in psychology, as its dangers can be undermined. Though some people are fully capable of living with such repression, not having an outlet when facing difficult emotions can lead to severe mental breakdowns ranging from sorrow to depression. The novel Ordinary People by Judith Guest delves into repression by suggesting, from a Psychoanalytic perspective, that constant repression of the Id psychic zone leads to the formation of multiple layers of dangerous defense mechanisms which can only be controlled by active reversal during regression. Guest s intended psychoanalytic theme can thus be approached by analyzing it in three separate segments, Conrad s repression of his Id, Conrad s defense mechanisms and Conrad s regression. Firstly, Conrad s Id has been nearly entirely repressed by his unconscious, leading him to lack the typical emotions that a teenager of his age should be feeling. The Id is one of the psychic zones proposed by Freud and it can be defined as humans unconscious source of instant gratification and animalistic emotions. Q(t+1)=1 if D(t)=1 and Q(t+1)=0 if D(t)=0. Using a RS flip flop construct a D flip flop. Answer: The D flip flop is a modification of the clocked SR flip flop. The D input goes directly into the S input and the complement of the D input goes to the R input. If it is 1, the flip flop is switched to the set state (unless it was already set). If it is 0, the flip flop switches to the clear state. Flip flop input Flip flop input Input Present State Next State S R D Q Q(t+1) ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 49. Research Paper On Walden Comforts Comforts In todays society we have a lot of comforts that we take for granted. Our daily lives are filled with plethora of gadgets, services, and machines that make our lives easier. Back in the mid 19th century there where not as many comforts as we have today. However, you would still have given up luxuries, if you decided to go live in a cabin in the woods. Henry D. Thoreau did just this when he built a house on the shores of Walden Pond. I believe that he did this to define the limits of his own strengths and connect with nature. This has made me come to reflect on what consequences do modern comforts have on our understanding of ourselves, and if we are out of touch with nature. My theory is that there are comforts that in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For this task he had to learn on his own about bricks and masonry therefore defining further his creativity (Thoreau 162 63). In the end, his self built small cabin in the woods gave him the freedom to observe and connect with nature at his leisure. Thoreau also gave up most social interaction. In society, as it was back then and how it is now, social interaction is a great comfort. It allows for us to satisfy our need to feel connected with other people and also share important information. At Walden Pond Thoreau lived a mile away from his closest neighbor. Except for a few interactions when he would go to town for needed supplies or people passing by close to his cabin, social interactions where few. In this manner Thoreau was able to define his strength by showing his lack of reliance in social interaction. In the absence of other people Thoreau was able to be left alone to think about and connect with nature. If today we wanted to find out strengths and connect with nature, just like Thoreau, are there comforts in our modern society preventing us from doing so? In my opinion there are. As pointed out by Richard Fry in his article for Pew Research Center, some of the most prevalent of this comforts are smartphones, cars (Fry). Smartphones are a great tool. The way we communicate is so multifaceted thanks to our smartphones. We are able to not just call and text but also check emails, video ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 50. Imine Synthesis Lab Report The underlying principles of the imine synthesis reactions include isomerization, pH values, and the importance of acids as catalysts. Imine formation begins with either an alkene or aldehyde that then produces alkenes isomers.7 Imine formation generally produces a mixture of products with E or Z conformation. This conformation is more commonly denoted as cis or trans. The trans product, or E, forms when the highest priority groups are on opposite sides of the alkene double bond, which is the more stable of the two conformations due to a lack of steric interaction wherein the molecules are more separated allowing for free rotation about the double bond. In contrast, the cis, or Z, alkene occurs when the highest priority groups are on the same side of the double bond, but the energy is not evenly distribution in the molecule, ... Using TLC analysis, the purity and polarity of the reaction mixtures were analyzed to determine the sample used to obtain the IR and 1H NMR spectrums of the product. IR and 1H NMR spectroscopy was used to characterize each molecule by determining functional groups present based on peak identification and hydrogen positional characteristics in the molecules respectively. Melting point analysis was also used to further understand and characterize the reaction mixtures with comparison to literature values confirming its molecular structure. Reaction mixture 1 containing the molecular sieves was found to be the purest and most polar of the three compounds as determined by TLC analysis and spot location as it was the closest spot towards the bottom of the plate. Each compound was characterized by four molecular motions observed IR and 1H NMR as identified by the multiple functional groups present in the molecules and seen in the graphs ...
