Pretty Woman
Social values of a particular time period are often reflected by the texts that are produced in that time.
Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw explores the superficiality of social constructs as well as the
objectification of women through its central female protagonist Eliza Doolittle, who is initially a
flower girl who desperately needs money but eventually takes control of her own future and
upbringing despite the societal constraints. Pretty Woman directed by Garry Marshall explores the
same values through Vivian, the main female protagonist who overcomes the barriers of the
superficial society to form a meaningful relationship with Edward; however it explores the values
from a consumerist and contemporary perspective of the 20th century. ... Show more content on

One of the social values that are explored through this way is the objectification of women. In
Pygmalion, this is expressed through Higgin s treatment of Eliza even from the beginning of the play
where he as a squashed cabbage leaf , a disgrace to the noble architecture of these columns , an
incarnate to the English language . The objectification of Eliza is further emphasised through Mrs
Higgins criticism of Higgins and Pickering in Act Three, where she says You certainly are a pretty pair
of babies, playing with your live dolls . By likening Eliza to a live doll , it disempowers her to a play
object, rather than an actual person. Shaw uses irony to criticise this value through the independence
and strong personality of Eliza at the end of the play where she decides to leave Higgins to open her
own flower shop and marry Freddy. Through this, Shaw strongly raises the idea that women are
indeed more than objects and can be independent and strong willed, hinting at the changing societal
values of the 20th

My Visit to the Brooklyn Museum
During my visit to the Brooklyn Museum, I found it both intriguing and informative. The layout of the
exhibition was divided into about three to four sections. Each section of the museum represented a
movement of the 60 s. The themes represented were segregation of blacks and whites, how they tried
to gain equality and the changes they anticipated would happen in the future. The artwork throughout
the exhibit was displayed in a varying gradient of black and white to colors. The type of background
information provided in the exhibit were captions under each artwork specifying the artists name, the
year and time it was created and what message the artwork was trying to portray. I did find the
information that was provided to me helpful because it gave me an insight on to what the specific
artwork was about and the message it was trying to convey to the me, the viewer. One artwork I
observed in this exhibit was David Hammons (American, b. 1943). The Door (Admissions Office),
1969. In this photograph it shows a body pressed against a door trying to gain entry into an admissions
office. The main character is a young African American boy. The role the character plays is a student
trying to get admissions into a White school. During this time the U.S. Federal Government
implemented school desegregation throughout the nation in 1954. White communities did not like the
idea of this and tried blocking black students from attending these white schools. The photo brings out

The Aicpa Code Of Professional Conduct
The introduction to the old AICPA Code of Professional Conduct of the American Institute of
Certified Public Accountants provides guidance and rules for all members as it explains the
composition of the code, application of standards and compliance enforcement procedures. The code
consists of two sections principles and rules. The Principles provide a general framework for the Rules
which CPAs have to adhere to the rules of the AICPA Code when practicing. The AICPA Code of
Conduct consists of three levels: Principles of professional of conduct, Rules and interpretations and
rulings. If a member violates the Code rules, disciplinary actions would be taken. The Principles of
Professional Conduct (Sec 50) explains the responsibilities, public interest, integrity, objectivity and
independence, due care and scope and nature of services for professional accountants. The rules of the
AICPA Code are (Sec 90) Applicability and Definitions, (Sec 100) Independence, Integrity and
Objectivity, (Sec 200) General Standards and accounting principles, (Sec 300) Responsibilities to
clients, (sec 400) Responsibilities to colleagues and (sec 500) Other responsibilities. Section 50
Principles of Professional Conduct consists of 6 articles: Responsibilities, The Public Interest,
Integrity, Objectivity and Independence, Due Care and Scope and Nature of Service. The ACIPA sets
higher ethical principles and rules that CPAs who voluntary become a member in it, are obligated to

Benefits Of The Minimum Legal Driving Age
Minimum legal driving age should not increase to age 18, due to accidents caused by teens. Rising the
driving age will not help decrease the rate of teen accidents. The foremost reason for their high
accident rate is because of lack of experience. Second are the distractions. This paper will present why
the minimum legal driving age should not increase and the benefits for teens to begin driving at age
16. Reasons why increasing the driving age will not reduce accident rate among teens or new drivers
is because they will still be in the stage of learning and maturing into responsible adults and will lack
the hands on driving experience from parents.
According to the Nation Teen Driving Statistics, a total of 2,823 teenagers ages 13 19 died in motor
vehicle crashes in 2012. In 2012, 60 percent of deaths among passenger vehicle occupants ages 16 19
were drivers (RMIIA, 2015). Increasing the driving age due to immaturity would cause mass
punishment for the age group of 15 18 young drivers. What needs to happen is to address the cause of
most motor vehicle accidents and address the issue. Parents are responsible for signing documentation
that gives their consent of their child being able to drive. Many people believe the reason for teen
accidents is because they are immature but, the reason may be due to distractions. Distractions are the
leading cause of accidents for young teens. Allowing teens to start driving will give them a little
responsibility as a young teenager.

Nitrates And Nitrites Lab Report
Factors:
There is some variation as to the levels of concentration in urine in regard to age and health status of
individuals. Certain disease processes and age, factor into the excretion of nitrates and nitrites via the
urinary tract. For instance, infants pose a greater susceptibility for toxicity. The presence of bacteria in
their gastrointestinal tract elicit a greater conversion percentage of nitrates to nitrites. This conversion
creates more nitric oxide metabolites which can cause a reduction in available oxygen in the blood.
The elimination of nitrates and nitrites concentrated in urine may give an indication of the synthases
taking place in the body. Concentration levels may be an indicator for disease processes and may be

Nitrate is not combustible and accelerates the burning when in contact with combustible material. A
common mistake is to boil water that contains high levels of nitrate. For example, the (CCAMP, 2013)
explains that if there is a high concentration of nitrate in drinking water, an immediate solution is to
use an alternative source of drinking, cooking, and mixing baby formula. The best recommended
source of water would be to use bottled water.
To reduce the chances of exposure of high levels of nitrate concentration the most common way is
reverse osmosis. For instance, treating technologies that remove nitrate include reverse osmosis, ion
exchange, and distillation (CCAMP, 2013). Using these methods to treat the water will reduce the
levels of nitrate that are in the drinking water. Reverse osmosis will remove 83 92% of nitrates in the
drinking water (Linton, 2014). By using this method, the nitrate levels will be reduced enough so that
it can be acceptable to drink.

Summary Of John Searle s Argument
John Searle first proposed the argument known as The Chinese Room Argument in a book he wrote in
1984. The argument is well known if not famous and has become one of the best know arguments in
recent philosophy. Searle imagines himself locked in a room following a computer program for
responding to questions written in Chinese characters slipped under the door. Searle does not
understand Chinese writing, but he can follow the computer program to manipulate symbols and
numerals to easily respond to the questions without fully understanding even what he was being asked
or responding. The narrow conclusion of the argument is that following instructions and programming
a computer might make it seem to understand Chinese but doesn t have a real ... Show more content

Due to the fact that Searle is inside the room and does not actually understand Chinese, he claims the
Chinese Room cannot be cognitively. Therefor, the Chinese Room would be functionally equivalent
but not cognitively equivalent to the native Chinese speakers and furthermore, if the Chinese Room
can imitate understanding without truly having it, then both Strong AI and Functionalism would have
to be invalid. Functionalism s imperative is to show that functional equivalence must always equal
cognitive equivalence, so if one could show functional equivalence did not equal cognitive
equivalence then Functionalism would be invalid. Additionally, if a computer or some other system
could imitate intelligence without retaining understanding, then strong AI would be invalid as well.
Strong AI is the view that if a machine can successfully imitate human intelligence in a way that it
becomes functionally and cognitively equivalent to a mind, then the computer itself is a mind. Strong
AI and its advocates respond to Searle s claims by applying the Systems Reply. The Systems Reply
states that despite the fact that Searle does not understand Chinese in the Chinese Room, the system as
a whole does in fact understand Chinese. Just because Searle, or the

All members should record downtime for delays that are not included in the standard such as
equipment battery changes, supervisor meeting, equipment problems, excessive congestion delay, and
any other time spent performing non standard work. All workers should have access to downtime

workers receive the appropriate indirect time in order to maintain the integrity of the standards. It is
important that both management and workers know how much time is allocated by the standards for a

Every Situation, By Patsy Rodenburg
In the book, The Second Circle: How to Use Positive Energy or Success in Every Situation by Patsy
Rodenburg, the author really focuses on how people can change their life by using your energy in a
more positive way. She discusses three circles of energy that everyone has experienced at some point
but one out of the three circles is the one we tend to fall in the most. The second circle is where
everyone should try to be in life while people who fall into the second and third circles will tend to not
have as positive of a life as they will never live with a presence. Throughout the book she explains
how something as simple as breathing can help us use more positive energy and keep us in the second
circle while also giving very detailed

Realism In Victorian Literature
REALISM Realism is a literary movement which tries to show things, actions or social circumstances
in point of fact without presenting them in the influence of feelings or other artistic ideas. (Duerksen,

from Greek word Res which means real. Realism emerged in France during the mid 19th centuary.

Leadership Styles Of The Road Management And Authority...
In Chapter 4, Blake and Mouton explain several different leadership styles such as: Impoverished
Management, Middle of the Road Management, Authority Compliance, Country Club Management,
Team Management, Paternalism/Maternalism and Opportunism. After a while of reflection, I
eventually come to the notion that my primary leadership style is the Paternalism/Maternalism, or in
my case Maternalism. Paternalism/Maternalism suggests the leader uses both Country Club
Management and Authority Compliance but does not mix them. This means that they have thoughtful
attention towards the needs of the people to create a comfortable and friendly atmosphere and if need
be, they decide that they will be efficient in their work by disregarding the needs of the people. This
leader acts kindly so that their group is able to accomplish the desired goal. These leaders are often
described as motherly according to their followers, some examples are that they make most of the
decisions, reward loyalty and obedience as well as punishing non cooperation. I believe that I fall into
this category of leadership for many reasons. Although there are some parts of this leadership style
that I do not follow, like, the inability to listen to others ideas and making most of the decisions. I
know that I am pretty open minded when it comes to new ideas and I usually will let people make
decisions for the group if their idea is legitimate and it is appropriate. I actually encourage new ideas
that can better

One of the top sporting events in the world is considered to be the NCAA March Madness tournament.
This tournament is ranked third just behind the super bowl and FIFA World Cup. It s unbelievable to
think that one of the top sporting events in the world is in college athletics. You have other
professional sports like basketball, baseball, hockey and NASCAR, but there championships still don t
compare to the NCAA championship. March madness is so popular that global firms Challenger, Gray

ESPN and is called, Selection Sunday. After the committee picks who belong in the tournament, they
then need to make the seeding s for each team. If you are a #1 seed you are considered the best team in
that region. If you re a #16 you are the worst team. There are four separate regions in the tournament

Building Software versus Building a House Building software and building a house have many
similarities as well as differences. There are four aspects that I found in which there are some
similarities and differences. These aspects are planning, materials, design, and schedules. There are
many more aspects that can be used as well as what the aspects have.
Similarities
In order to better understand the similarities and differences between software architecture and
building architecture one needs to know what software is. According to Software Engineering Institute

In building architecture the design is hard to change once it is set up. It is also more time consuming to
change and more costly. The last aspect is the scheduling aspect. In software architecture one can
schedule a project to be done in as little as one month depending on the project. Within the building
architecture the scheduling is more time consuming and could take up more time depending if the
stakeholder is approved for certain aspects of the building. In the building architecture one needs to
take into consideration the scheduling when it comes to the inspectors. There are times when they are
able to go and let the stakeholders know what passed and what did not. In software architecture the
program will flag where the program is, making it easier for the programmer to go back and check on
the spot when running the program. In the diagram below one can see the aspects as well as the
differences in both software and building architecture.

Genesis And Development Of A Scientific Fact
While I was reading Genesis and Development of a Scientific Fact (GDSF) (Fleck, 1935), I played
close attention to the Foreword written by Thomas Kuhn. As a novice in reading about the philosophy
of science, the name Kuhn sounded familiar, but I was not able to remember which situations or
disciplines were Kuhn s areas of expertise. Moreover, I was sure that his name was related to
philosophy, but I did not certainly know about his contributions to the development of the philosophy
of science. Through inquiring more about the connections between Kuhn and Fleck, I have found
some research that has related these philosophers ways of thinking. This research claims that Fleck
and Kuhn have shaped the development of science as it is recognized nowadays, and their
contributions are framed into what Brorson, and Andersen (2001) have called scientific phenomena
worlds (p.109) . Some of this research compares both thoughts (e.g. Möẞner, 2011; Stark, 2012),
while other conceives Fleck as precursor of Kuhn s thought (e.g. Babich, 2003; Pérez Marín, 2010).
The possible similarities between these philosophers thoughts seem to be only superficial (Möẞner,
2011; Pérez Marín, 2010; Stark, 2012). An in depth reading of Kuhn s reflections on Fleck s influence
on his Structure of the Scientific Revolution (SSR) (1970) shows that Kuhn was certainly moved by
the sociology of the sciences proposed by Fleck, but Kuhn is also cautious to overtly say that Fleck
influenced his philosophy

Security Guards And The Security Field
There are many different types of security guards, those who are armed compared to those who are
not, those who patrol and those who sit behind a desk watching visitors entering and exiting a
building. There are many different types of sites that require different types of security coverage; but
the task remains the same across the board; to patrol, or monitor on CCTV (closed circuit television)
in order to fight crime and terrorism. (Slideshare, 2012)
Security guards are a necessity to have in today s world, with the security force around; working with
the police at times it has expanded the areas where there may be a shortage of officers for coverage.
(Sapse, 2013)
With security there are many different kinds of tasks that are involved depending on where you work.
Report writing is a must in the security field this is where daily activities or any problems are written
down; things like fires, property damage, theft, explosions, or even espionage. To either monitor the

out of the ordinary; like fires, bombs, or floods. To monitor anyone entering or exiting the property
and guarding against any theft while maintaining a level of security that meets the client s

The Italian Renaissance s Life And Life Of Filippo...
Filippo Brunelleschi The Italian Renaissance, ranging between the 1400 s 1600 s, was a time that
continued classicism in culture, art, and architecture. Architecture in particular applied classical
vocabulary and forms to contemporary building functions and types. Many well known individuals
helped shape this period of time, Brunelleschi included. Not much is known about Filippo
Brunelleschi s early life. He was born 1377, the second son of Ser Brunellesco Di Lippo Lapi, in
Florence, Italy. While growing up in a political household, due to his father holding a distinct notary
position, expectations were held high for him to follow the same path as his father. He was even given
a formal education fit for that lifestyle. Though going against expectations, Brunelleschi followed in
his brother s footsteps to become a goldsmith and joined the Silk Merchants guild. It took him a total
of six years to be awarded the title of master. He gained experience not only as a goldsmith but also in
sculpting and mechanics. In 1401, a contested sponsored by the Wool manufacturers Guild was
publicly announced. It called for new bronze panels on the Baptistery doors. Seven candidates entered
the competition but only Filippo Brunelleschi and Lorenzo Ghiberti succeeded in becoming finalists.
Everyone was given the same material and subject, the Sacrifice of Isaac, but their final piece couldn t
have been any more different. Brunelleschi s design featured a more humanistic approach with drama

Analysis of Bruce Springsteen s Song Devils Dust Essay
Analysis of Bruce Springsteen s Song Devils Dust
In times of war it is quite common for people to start questioning their values and their actions and be
unsure of the path they are taking. This is common because to protect our values we often are told that
we have to take actions that conflict with those values. One example would be how to protect our
liberties we must sometimes restrain those liberties during treacherous times. However, the ultimate
question is whether or not going against the very values we stand for is a hypocritical and wrongful
action plan. Bruce Springsteen approaches this very issue in his song Devils Dust , from the CD with
the same title, and he subtly criticizes how the United States is betraying ... Show more content on

The refrain goes like this, When I look into your eyes / There s just devils and dust . Eyes are often
used in poetry and in popular culture as a path to see what somebody really feels and how that person
is really like in the inside. If in a person s eyes there s just devils and dust it shows that that person is
troubled, haunted, and desolated. The visual image of devils and dust illustrates a godforsaken place,
which is what that person s soul has become. Following that the speaker tells his friend, Bobby, how
they are a long, long way from home . These verses can have two meanings: they can refer to a soldier
in a war (thus the relation with the Iraq War) or they could mean that we have strayed so far away
from our values, from what we were founded upon, that this is no longer home, it is now a strange
place. Many people argue, and with some justification, that the United States in the past years is
becoming less and less like the country it was founded to be. The verse, I feel a dirty wind blowing
once more takes us to the Iraq War since it evokes the image of a desert. It also relates, together with
the finger on the trigger , to the Wild West, which seems to be where Springsteen has gotten most of
the imagery for his CD (as it can be seen in songs with titles such as Black Cowboys and The Hitter ).

During this critical period of learning, children can be considered good or bad, clever or dull, happy or
unhappy, and so on. During this stage, children develop emotional habits that match the vision they
have of themselves, be behaving accordingly to certain lines that are taken by adults.
Most models are learned from parents and other family members. This leads to a certain type of
behavior whose duration depends upon the treatment it is given. If the parents are emotionally mature
and intelligent, A child will receive positive messages. This will let them understand the consequences
of their behavior and why they are favorable or not. Emotionally immature parents will probably
resort to methods such as yelling or physical aggression to correct the behavior. (Ciarrochi, Chan
Caputi, 2000).
Children will form on the emotional maturity as parents guide and practice with them, taking into
account above aspects, such as opening the heart, avoiding the power plays (abuse of authority, abused
and manipulated through fear), to be honest, avoid excessive control (being rigid), understand the
fears of children, encourage emotionally grown resources, teaching emotional self (say what you like
or dislike assertiveness) and be patient. Parents must realize that children learn a little at a time and
they are the main source of information. This is where the importance of Emotional Educating helps

Christian Inaccuracies In The Bible
Introduction
Every day people are introduced to the Bible, whether it be through Christians or non
Christians. Christians will try to convince people that the Bible is true, while non Christians will
say that there are too many inaccuracies in the Bible for it to be true. As Christians, we should
take a look at what the other side has to say, so we are aware of what others believe and so that
we can accurately talk about the other side s claims. Another reason that Christians should
conduct their own research on the accuracy is so they can defend their faith and know why they
believe what they believe. There are many people in our would today that believe certain facts

the different forms media can take, it isn t all too shocking that media has had an influence on deviant
behaviors. The media s influence though, is attributed to promoting deviance rather than reducing it.
When individuals contemplate the term deviance, they often think of it as behavior that is inherently
bad. Contrary to that belief, deviance is described as a behavior that departs from the social constructs
of a society(Thio 2010). Deviance, criminal or not, is commonly used amongst mass media to
entertain their viewers. The media relies on their audience s inherent social constructs to make a profit.
Without the meanings attached to these deviant behaviors, there wouldn t be any motive behind
showing them. All things considered, what the media covers and how much they chose to cover has
significantly changed over the years, the most apparent in crime coverage. This consistent coverage of
crime gives the audience an opportunity to interact with the media. They can feel a part of the
intensity of an investigation, cheer on the enforcers, become immersed in their stereotypes. On the
other hand, they can appreciate deviance for its resilience to overcome and resist

Summary Of Pat Conroy s The Lords Of Discipline
In The Lords of Discipline, Pat Conroy develops a complex personality in the character of Tradd St.
Croix. (Conroy 22) Tradd is a character overwhelmed by insecurities and through a variety of reasons,
is made to stay quiet about them. These insecurities and the restraint from expressing his true feelings
are what the artist s representation of Tradd presents to us, through a variety of visuals, which show
the artist s opinion of Tradd s innocence in the situation.
What first strikes the viewer about this image is its bizarre depiction of Tradd, shirtless, crying, and
chained by a collar. What this shows is Tradd s situation in life, wherein he is chained to the high class
St. Croix family. They bind him, and submit him to their will, despite what he wants for himself.
Tradd would most like to be with his friends and to enjoy their company, but because of his position in
the society of Charleston, he is held to certain values and traditions that prevent him from enjoying his
life for his own. An example of this would be Tradd s membership in The Ten, a secret organization
which seeks to cast out those they find unworthy from the school. Tradd does not join this group of his
own volition, rather he is forced into it by his being a member of the St. Croix family. As Tradd put it,
It was my heritage again, Will. I ve never earned a single thing in my life on my own merits.
Everything is because my name is Tradd St. Croix. (551) Tradd feels he has a duty to uphold family
tradition, but also longs to join his friends, thus resulting in his being chained. This chaining is what
leads to the sadness on Tradd s face in the image. This conflict between his familial obligations and
the straining of his relationship with his friends is what causes Tradd so much torment, and leads to his
sadness.
What next sticks out about the image is the background depiction of the four silhouettes. Due to the
somewhat ambiguous nature of these shadowy figures, there are multiple interpretations one can take
to understand them. Prominently featured over one of the figures is the letter X, or as it symbolizes in
Roman numerals, the number ten. This then relates back to Tradd s feeling held captive by tradition
and obligation to

In A Society Where So Much Emphasis Is Placed On The Way
In a society where so much emphasis is placed on the way one looks, it s no surprise that one could be
self conscious about their body image. As a result, there are some who take drastic actions in order to
maintain this distorted image of themselves. These actions can not only affect the way an individual
perceives themselves, but it also could have more serious, life threatening consequences, including
death. Nonetheless, treatment and recovery are possible. Anorexia Nervosa, also known as anorexia,
involves intense emotions and abnormal behaviors that typically revolves around food and weight and
out of all the psychiatric conditions, it has the highest death rate ( Anorexia nervosa; Anorexia: Signs,
Symptoms, Causes Treatment ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While there are two different types of anorexia, their symptoms and assumed causes are relatively the
same. Goldberg (2016) notes that although anorexia essentially means loss of appetite, this definition
is inaccurate as people with this disorder are in fact, hungry, but refuse to eat. Individuals suffering
from anorexia, tend to have an obsessive fear of gaining weight or becoming fat, so they start
behaving in ways that causes them to lose an excessive amount of weight, by either restricting the
amount of food consumed, exercising too much, or starving themselves (Anorexia Nervosa: Signs,
Symptoms, Causes, And Treatment; Smith, Melinda, M.A., and Jeanne Segal, Ph.D). These
individuals have a distorted perception of themselves, believing that they are too fat, when they are in
fact underweight, as well as overly weighing themselves to see if they gained any weight, overly
obsessing over food labels and nutrition, and developing strange eating habits, such as cutting food
into tiny pieces, eating alone, and/or hiding food; In addition. people struggling with this disorder tend
to have a low self esteem, feel hopeless, and become socially withdrawn from family, friends, and
activities they once enjoyed. ( Anorexia: Signs, Symptoms, Causes Treatment Help; Smith, Melinda,
M.A., and Jeanne Segal, Ph.D; Goldberg, Joseph, MD). Although an exact cause of anorexia is
unknown, it is believed that it can develop as a result of a combination of biological,

Garage Door
How to test the balance of a garage door If you are having trouble with the garage door opening and
closing, it may be due to a problem with springs. When the springs are properly adjusted, the door is
balanced and can be opened easily with the garage door opener or manually. It is recommended that
you check the balance of the garage door at least once a year, especially if it is typically operated with
an opener. There are no tools required to test the balance, but if it isn t balanced correctly, to avoid
possible severe injuries call a professional to do the repairs. What Are Garage Door Springs? There
are many different parts that work together to make your garage door operate correctly, but the springs
play an extremely important role. The goal of the springs is to counteract the doors force of gravity,
which means the door spring is meant to make the door light enough for you to lift on your own
and/or for the power from the opener to lift it up easily. There are two primary types of residential
garage door springs; torsion springs and extension springs. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

In older homes that have less room in the garage, they may be mounted towards the rear of the garage.
Torsion springs, when installed and operating correctly are responsible for balancing the door.
Balanced in this cases basically means that the door should use the same amount of pressure to open
and close and be easy to manually lift. Torsion springs are designed to last a long time, but over time
they weaken and can break. Extension springs in most situations, these are mounted above the garage
door track. However, in some situations they may mounted vertically on the sides of the track.
Extension springs use the pulling force of the spring to pull the door upward, against

The Cherry Orchard and the Rise of Bolshevism Essay
The Cherry Orchard and the Rise of Bolshevism
Anton Chekhov uses The Cherry Orchard, to openly present the decline of an aristocratic Russian
family as a microcosm of the rapid decline of the old Russia at the end of the nineteenth century but
also provides an ominous foreshadowing of the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution in the disparate ideals of
his characters, Trofimov and Lopakhin, however unintentionally. The Gayev family and their plight is
intended as a symbolic microcosm of the fall of the aristocracy in society at large. Though the
merchant Lopakhin is presented as the character who holds values of the new, post aristocratic age, the
student Trofimov espouses the political sentiments that will ultimately replace both the ... Show more

The most prominent of these symbols is the sound of a snapped string that occurs twice in the play.
That this symbolizes the end of the Russian aristocracy is obvious; after all, it is the one unrealistic
device in the largely realistic Cherry Orchard. Also, the elderly servant Firs informs everyone that
similar sounds were heard when the serfs were emancipated in the previous social upheaval.
Characters reactions to the sound in Act II are telling. True to his being the archetypal modern man,
the merchant Lopakhin is unfazed. The sound comes from somewhere very far away (804), he says.
Since he is naturally destined for the new Russia, recognizing the sound is not important for him; he is
already living in the new age.
The symbolism of the string snapping is even more clear at the end of Act IV, when old Firs is left
alone to die. The stage directions state that, after the sound of a snapped string dying mournfully away
is heard, [a] stillness falls, and nothing is heard but the thud of an ax on a tree far away in the orchard
(815). With the orchard (the status of aristocracy) in the hands of Lopakhin (the new commercial
class), the old days are forever gone. All that is left to hear is the destruction of the orchard as the new
class builds its world from the remains of the old. However, in 1917, the Bolsheviks would succeed in
altering Russia in a more lasting way, and this small revolution would be subsumed by Communism.

A Radical- Socialist Feminism with a Postcolonial Approah...
Feminism for me has come to be the recognition of oppression and privilege. What one does with this
knowledge of oppression and privilege is that person s version of feminism. After reading Tong (2009)
on various feminist theories, I have come to see the different feminist theories in a continuum of the
feminist movement. Therefore, these theories cannot be boxed into clear cut categories that share
nothing in common with each other. I will attempt to formulate my own feminist theory using the
previous works of feminist scholars as my foundation. In order to explain the application of this
theory, I will illuminate a feminist issue. Further, I will present ways to tackle the problem and provide
limitations of my theory. My feminist theory ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Through colonization and globalization this system of domination seeks to convert the more
egalitarian societies. An example of this spread of domination is the white settler s attitude towards
conquering and taming the nature, which was forcefully embedded in the Native American culture. I
am interested in exploring how the foundation of the issue, which is tied to women s sexuality, plays
out in the colonial context. To examine this, I will look at the institution of marriage and prove that it
is a form of patriarchal colonization of women. When I talk about colonization of women, the
colonizer is not the western world but patriarchy. However, to make connections with colonization, I
frequently use the example of White Western colonizers (Europe) against the dark skinned Third
World dwellers (Americas, Africa, Asia and Oceania). Although marriage, wedding ceremonies, and
other rituals related to marriage varies from culture and/or geographic location, for sake of simplicity I
will look at a marriage system of monogamy between a man and a woman for life. In this system they
are expected to procreate and stay together as a nuclear family. This is close to the Western system of
marriage, which is seeping into many other cultures through forces of capitalism and cultural
hegemony. There are subtle messages that girls at a young age get about getting married. Simone de
Beauvoir wrote in the Second Sex Marriage

“the Main Threat to the Stability of the Weimar Republic...
The main threat to the stability of the Weimar Republic in the period of 1919 to 1923 came from the
political violence of the extreme right. How far do you agree with this judgement?
The period of 1919 to 1923 saw numerous factors threaten the stability of the Weimar Republic. The
political violence from both the left and right wing parties, the weakness of the Weimar Constituion
itself and the economic issues such as hyperinflation all posed as threats to the stability of the
Republic. However, although the statement above claims that the political violence from the right was
the main threat to the stability of the republic, the Treaty of Versailles resulted in the republic itself

The Weimar Constitution itself could also been seen as a threat to the stability of the Weimar
Republic. In the Bundesrat, Prussian seats were elected by those who paid more tax, resulting in it
therefore been dominated by conservatives. 17/58 seats in the Bundesrat were from Prussia and had
power to veto bills. This in itself mean that any decisions in the Bundesrat were most likely to be that
of traditionalist and conservative decisions as oppose to socialist or liberal. Furthermore, the Republic
was trying to introduce democracy through this constitution. However, the Kaiser still had enough
power to over rule any decisions, making the system dependent on the abilities and personality of the
Kaiser. Such a system would be seem as fundamentally flawed and therefore unable to provide
stability and a working democracy. Additionally, the proportional representation voting system meant
that a party had to have over 51% of the vote in order to form a government which normally resulted
in many coalitions. This also resulted in six different governments coming into power between 1919
and 1923. This meant stability within the Weimar Republic was highly unlikely with so many
governments coming in and out of power.

Asian Athlete Stereotypes
In US sports, Asian or Asian American athletes are almost nonexistent, particularly in basketball,
football, and hockey. When they do appear, these athletes may be devalued, dismissed, and/or simply
go unnoticed and unconsidered. In a sports world dominated by Black and White, Asian athletes are
being denied roles due to their perceived abilities. According to The Jeremy Lin Effect: Being an
Asian Sport Psychology Consultant in a Black and White World , Alexander Brian Yu, Thomas
Nguyen, and Trent Petrie declare that Asian and Asian American athletes are being stereotyped which
decreases the opportunities they are given to participate in professional sports in the United States.
The article argues that although Asians, at least in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Because individuals in sports who make the roster decisions have such high power they tend to
overlook, under respect, or devalue others because of those persons races and/or ethnicities. These are
subtle forms of racism that may not be known by anyone as a conscious action, but are created by
negative stereotypes. This presents itself in sports especially because of how big of a discrepancy there
is between the number of Asians and the amount of Whites and Blacks in professional sports in the
United States. I can agree with the point that stereotypes are decreasing the opportunities for Asians in
sports. Whether you want to deny it or not, Asians are not viewed as the primary choice for any
athletic event in the United States, and that is shown especially in the NBA where there is only one
Asian player on a roster, Jeremy Lin. Although I do want to point out that the discrepancy there is that
in the United States White and Black races make up a much larger part of the population than Asians
do; therefore, there is a statistically smaller chance for an Asian in the United States to have the talent
to play professional sports than a White or

St Joseph Research Paper
Deep in the thick swamps and woods of Northern Gulf County, amidst the buzz and sting of
mosquitoes, chirps of squirrels, and swirls of the Apalachicola, is a long lost story. One hundred and

County. That small community, was, and still is an enigma in the wilderness of territorial Florida and

Frank Bouurassa Research Paper
Frank Bourassa ( Frank ) is an easygoing man of forty four. As a young man, in his twenties, without
support from his family, he opened a small factory that specialized in the making of brake pads and
shoes. He worked tirelessly twenty hours a day without sleep, which eventually affected his health
drastically. Frank was diagnosed with an acute stress disorder and was placed on anti anxiety pills.
Despite all the odds, Frank made his factory a success, although he had to sell it to maintain his health.
Frank had a rough childhood, as a child. At age 15, he quit school and left his home. He took up a
legal work as a mechanic to sustain himself. However, without much of a family presence in his life,
he had a few skirmishes with the law and had to serve a jailtime. Out of boredom, frank started
visiting different websites, including government websites, secret service in particular. Sadly, on this
agency s website, an agency created to fight and control fraud and crime, frank easily and readily
gathered in depth guide on how to print counterfeit money. On this website, there were guides to serial

Shoot For The Moon Persuasive Research Paper
Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you ll land among the stars . This is the famous and well known

worth, and not worth it. In our unit, we read books, searched articles online, listened to motivational
speeches, and watched videos online, all arguing on whether dreams are worth chasing or not. Of
course, some dreams are just downright impossible or may seem too difficult; but having a goal
motivates people to keep moving forward down their path, it can give a person happiness if achieved,

when bursae, a fluid filled sac at the joints, gets inflamed. A person with Bursitis will have trouble

tendons, bones, and muscles located near our joints; allowing movement in joints without much

The Fight Against Poverty Around The World
One of the most important steps in the fight against poverty around the world is the creation of jobs.
The most competitive and successful in this direction is the social entrepreneurship. The task of the
social enterprises is to contribute to the solving of the social problems and promoting of the people s
livelihood. Social enterprises provide jobs for hundreds of thousands of people in the various fields:
food production, marketing, credit, insurance, and transportation. The social enterprises open a variety
of employment opportunities for the people with disabilities, marginalized groups, youth, and women.
In many countries the social enterprises are working closely together with the governmental
organizations, both at national and local level. Today, entrepreneurs and enterprises with social
responsibility around the world receive support from the non profit organizations, foundations,
governments, and individuals. However, despite the fact that the benefits of social entrepreneurship
are clear to many, there are many difficulties with its development. There is still not reached a
consensus on what social enterprise is and who can be called a social entrepreneur. Some believe that
the term social entrepreneur must refer only to the founding organizations, the main source of income
of which is the payment of their clients. Others believe that the social entrepreneur is one who
performs work on the government contracts, and still others believe the social

  • 2. Pretty Woman Social values of a particular time period are often reflected by the texts that are produced in that time. Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw explores the superficiality of social constructs as well as the objectification of women through its central female protagonist Eliza Doolittle, who is initially a flower girl who desperately needs money but eventually takes control of her own future and upbringing despite the societal constraints. Pretty Woman directed by Garry Marshall explores the same values through Vivian, the main female protagonist who overcomes the barriers of the superficial society to form a meaningful relationship with Edward; however it explores the values from a consumerist and contemporary perspective of the 20th century. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One of the social values that are explored through this way is the objectification of women. In Pygmalion, this is expressed through Higgin s treatment of Eliza even from the beginning of the play where he as a squashed cabbage leaf , a disgrace to the noble architecture of these columns , an incarnate to the English language . The objectification of Eliza is further emphasised through Mrs Higgins criticism of Higgins and Pickering in Act Three, where she says You certainly are a pretty pair of babies, playing with your live dolls . By likening Eliza to a live doll , it disempowers her to a play object, rather than an actual person. Shaw uses irony to criticise this value through the independence and strong personality of Eliza at the end of the play where she decides to leave Higgins to open her own flower shop and marry Freddy. Through this, Shaw strongly raises the idea that women are indeed more than objects and can be independent and strong willed, hinting at the changing societal values of the 20th ... • 3. My Visit to the Brooklyn Museum During my visit to the Brooklyn Museum, I found it both intriguing and informative. The layout of the exhibition was divided into about three to four sections. Each section of the museum represented a movement of the 60 s. The themes represented were segregation of blacks and whites, how they tried to gain equality and the changes they anticipated would happen in the future. The artwork throughout the exhibit was displayed in a varying gradient of black and white to colors. The type of background information provided in the exhibit were captions under each artwork specifying the artists name, the year and time it was created and what message the artwork was trying to portray. I did find the information that was provided to me helpful because it gave me an insight on to what the specific artwork was about and the message it was trying to convey to the me, the viewer. One artwork I observed in this exhibit was David Hammons (American, b. 1943). The Door (Admissions Office), 1969. In this photograph it shows a body pressed against a door trying to gain entry into an admissions office. The main character is a young African American boy. The role the character plays is a student trying to get admissions into a White school. During this time the U.S. Federal Government implemented school desegregation throughout the nation in 1954. White communities did not like the idea of this and tried blocking black students from attending these white schools. The photo brings out a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Benefits Of The Minimum Legal Driving Age Minimum legal driving age should not increase to age 18, due to accidents caused by teens. Rising the driving age will not help decrease the rate of teen accidents. The foremost reason for their high accident rate is because of lack of experience. Second are the distractions. This paper will present why the minimum legal driving age should not increase and the benefits for teens to begin driving at age 16. Reasons why increasing the driving age will not reduce accident rate among teens or new drivers is because they will still be in the stage of learning and maturing into responsible adults and will lack the hands on driving experience from parents. According to the Nation Teen Driving Statistics, a total of 2,823 teenagers ages 13 19 died in motor vehicle crashes in 2012. In 2012, 60 percent of deaths among passenger vehicle occupants ages 16 19 were drivers (RMIIA, 2015). Increasing the driving age due to immaturity would cause mass punishment for the age group of 15 18 young drivers. What needs to happen is to address the cause of most motor vehicle accidents and address the issue. Parents are responsible for signing documentation that gives their consent of their child being able to drive. Many people believe the reason for teen accidents is because they are immature but, the reason may be due to distractions. Distractions are the leading cause of accidents for young teens. Allowing teens to start driving will give them a little responsibility as a young teenager. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Nitrates And Nitrites Lab Report Factors: There is some variation as to the levels of concentration in urine in regard to age and health status of individuals. Certain disease processes and age, factor into the excretion of nitrates and nitrites via the urinary tract. For instance, infants pose a greater susceptibility for toxicity. The presence of bacteria in their gastrointestinal tract elicit a greater conversion percentage of nitrates to nitrites. This conversion creates more nitric oxide metabolites which can cause a reduction in available oxygen in the blood. The elimination of nitrates and nitrites concentrated in urine may give an indication of the synthases taking place in the body. Nitrate is not combustible and accelerates the burning when in contact with combustible material. A common mistake is to boil water that contains high levels of nitrate. For example, the (CCAMP, 2013) explains that if there is a high concentration of nitrate in drinking water, an immediate solution is to use an alternative source of drinking, cooking, and mixing baby formula. The best recommended source of water would be to use bottled water. To reduce the chances of exposure of high levels of nitrate concentration the most common way is reverse osmosis. For instance, treating technologies that remove nitrate include reverse osmosis, ion exchange, and distillation (CCAMP, 2013). Using these methods to treat the water will reduce the levels of nitrate that are in the drinking water. Reverse osmosis will remove 83 92% of nitrates in the drinking water (Linton, 2014). By using this method, the nitrate levels will be reduced enough so that it can be acceptable to drink. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Summary Of John Searle s Argument John Searle first proposed the argument known as The Chinese Room Argument in a book he wrote in 1984. The argument is well known if not famous and has become one of the best know arguments in recent philosophy. Searle imagines himself locked in a room following a computer program for responding to questions written in Chinese characters slipped under the door. Searle does not understand Chinese writing, but he can follow the computer program to manipulate symbols and numerals to easily respond to the questions without fully understanding even what he was being asked or responding. The narrow conclusion of the argument is that following instructions and programming a computer might make it seem to understand Chinese but doesn t have a real ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Due to the fact that Searle is inside the room and does not actually understand Chinese, he claims the Chinese Room cannot be cognitively. Therefor, the Chinese Room would be functionally equivalent but not cognitively equivalent to the native Chinese speakers and furthermore, if the Chinese Room can imitate understanding without truly having it, then both Strong AI and Functionalism would have to be invalid. Functionalism s imperative is to show that functional equivalence must always equal cognitive equivalence, so if one could show functional equivalence did not equal cognitive equivalence then Functionalism would be invalid. Additionally, if a computer or some other system could imitate intelligence without retaining understanding, then strong AI would be invalid as well. Strong AI is the view that if a machine can successfully imitate human intelligence in a way that it becomes functionally and cognitively equivalent to a mind, then the computer itself is a mind. Strong AI and its advocates respond to Searle s claims by applying the Systems Reply. The Systems Reply states that despite the fact that Searle does not understand Chinese in the Chinese Room, the system as a whole does in fact understand Chinese. Just because Searle, or the ... • 11. Leadership Styles Of The Road Management And Authority... In Chapter 4, Blake and Mouton explain several different leadership styles such as: Impoverished Management, Middle of the Road Management, Authority Compliance, Country Club Management, Team Management, Paternalism/Maternalism and Opportunism. After a while of reflection, I eventually come to the notion that my primary leadership style is the Paternalism/Maternalism, or in my case Maternalism. Paternalism/Maternalism suggests the leader uses both Country Club Management and Authority Compliance but does not mix them. This means that they have thoughtful attention towards the needs of the people to create a comfortable and friendly atmosphere and if need be, they decide that they will be efficient in their work by disregarding the needs of the people. This leader acts kindly so that their group is able to accomplish the desired goal. These leaders are often described as motherly according to their followers, some examples are that they make most of the decisions, reward loyalty and obedience as well as punishing non cooperation. I believe that I fall into this category of leadership for many reasons. Although there are some parts of this leadership style that I do not follow, like, the inability to listen to others ideas and making most of the decisions. I know that I am pretty open minded when it comes to new ideas and I usually will let people make decisions for the group if their idea is legitimate and it is appropriate. In the building architecture one needs to take into consideration the scheduling when it comes to the inspectors. Genesis And Development Of A Scientific Fact While I was reading Genesis and Development of a Scientific Fact (GDSF) (Fleck, 1935), I played close attention to the Foreword written by Thomas Kuhn. As a novice in reading about the philosophy of science, the name Kuhn sounded familiar, but I was not able to remember which situations or disciplines were Kuhn s areas of expertise. Moreover, I was sure that his name was related to philosophy, but I did not certainly know about his contributions to the development of the philosophy of science. Through inquiring more about the connections between Kuhn and Fleck, I have found some research that has related these philosophers ways of thinking. This research claims that Fleck and Kuhn have shaped the development of science as it is recognized nowadays, and their contributions are framed into what Brorson, and Andersen (2001) have called scientific phenomena worlds (p.109) . Some of this research compares both thoughts (e.g. Möẞner, 2011; Stark, 2012), while other conceives Fleck as precursor of Kuhn s thought (e.g. Babich, 2003; Pérez Marín, 2010). The possible similarities between these philosophers thoughts seem to be only superficial (Möẞner, 2011; Pérez Marín, 2010; Stark, 2012). An in depth reading of Kuhn s reflections on Fleck s influence on his Structure of the Scientific Revolution (SSR) (1970) shows that Kuhn was certainly moved by the sociology of the sciences proposed by Fleck, but Kuhn is also cautious to overtly say that Fleck influenced his philosophy ... Filippo Brunelleschi The Italian Renaissance, ranging between the 1400 s 1600 s, was a time that continued classicism in culture, art, and architecture. Architecture in particular applied classical vocabulary and forms to contemporary building functions and types. Many well known individuals helped shape this period of time, Brunelleschi included. Not much is known about Filippo Brunelleschi s early life. He was born 1377, the second son of Ser Brunellesco Di Lippo Lapi, in Florence, Italy. While growing up in a political household, due to his father holding a distinct notary position, expectations were held high for him to follow the same path as his father. He was even given a formal education fit for that lifestyle. Though going against expectations, Brunelleschi followed in his brother s footsteps to become a goldsmith and joined the Silk Merchants guild. It took him a total of six years to be awarded the title of master. He gained experience not only as a goldsmith but also in sculpting and mechanics. In 1401, a contested sponsored by the Wool manufacturers Guild was publicly announced. It called for new bronze panels on the Baptistery doors. Seven candidates entered the competition but only Filippo Brunelleschi and Lorenzo Ghiberti succeeded in becoming finalists. Analysis of Bruce Springsteen s Song Devils Dust Essay Analysis of Bruce Springsteen s Song Devils Dust In times of war it is quite common for people to start questioning their values and their actions and be unsure of the path they are taking. This is common because to protect our values we often are told that we have to take actions that conflict with those values. One example would be how to protect our liberties we must sometimes restrain those liberties during treacherous times. However, the ultimate question is whether or not going against the very values we stand for is a hypocritical and wrongful action plan. The visual image of devils and dust illustrates a godforsaken place, which is what that person s soul has become. Following that the speaker tells his friend, Bobby, how they are a long, long way from home . These verses can have two meanings: they can refer to a soldier in a war (thus the relation with the Iraq War) or they could mean that we have strayed so far away from our values, from what we were founded upon, that this is no longer home, it is now a strange place. Many people argue, and with some justification, that the United States in the past years is becoming less and less like the country it was founded to be. The verse, I feel a dirty wind blowing once more takes us to the Iraq War since it evokes the image of a desert. Considering all the different forms media can take, it isn t all too shocking that media has had an influence on deviant behaviors. The media s influence though, is attributed to promoting deviance rather than reducing it. When individuals contemplate the term deviance, they often think of it as behavior that is inherently bad. Contrary to that belief, deviance is described as a behavior that departs from the social constructs of a society(Thio 2010). Deviance, criminal or not, is commonly used amongst mass media to entertain their viewers. The media relies on their audience s inherent social constructs to make a profit. Without the meanings attached to these deviant behaviors, there wouldn t be any motive behind showing them. • 24. Summary Of Pat Conroy s The Lords Of Discipline In The Lords of Discipline, Pat Conroy develops a complex personality in the character of Tradd St. Croix. (Conroy 22) Tradd is a character overwhelmed by insecurities and through a variety of reasons, is made to stay quiet about them. These insecurities and the restraint from expressing his true feelings are what the artist s representation of Tradd presents to us, through a variety of visuals, which show the artist s opinion of Tradd s innocence in the situation. What first strikes the viewer about this image is its bizarre depiction of Tradd, shirtless, crying, and chained by a collar. What this shows is Tradd s situation in life, wherein he is chained to the high class St. Croix family. They bind him, and submit him to their will, despite what he wants for himself. Tradd would most like to be with his friends and to enjoy their company, but because of his position in the society of Charleston, he is held to certain values and traditions that prevent him from enjoying his life for his own. An example of this would be Tradd s membership in The Ten, a secret organization which seeks to cast out those they find unworthy from the school. Tradd does not join this group of his own volition, rather he is forced into it by his being a member of the St. Croix family. As Tradd put it, It was my heritage again, Will. I ve never earned a single thing in my life on my own merits. Everything is because my name is Tradd St. Croix. (551) Tradd feels he has a duty to uphold family tradition, but also longs to join his friends, thus resulting in his being chained. This chaining is what leads to the sadness on Tradd s face in the image. This conflict between his familial obligations and the straining of his relationship with his friends is what causes Tradd so much torment, and leads to his sadness. What next sticks out about the image is the background depiction of the four silhouettes. Due to the somewhat ambiguous nature of these shadowy figures, there are multiple interpretations one can take to understand them. The Cherry Orchard and the Rise of Bolshevism Essay The Cherry Orchard and the Rise of Bolshevism Anton Chekhov uses The Cherry Orchard, to openly present the decline of an aristocratic Russian family as a microcosm of the rapid decline of the old Russia at the end of the nineteenth century but also provides an ominous foreshadowing of the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution in the disparate ideals of his characters, Trofimov and Lopakhin, however unintentionally. The Gayev family and their plight is intended as a symbolic microcosm of the fall of the aristocracy in society at large. Characters reactions to the sound in Act II are telling. True to his being the archetypal modern man, the merchant Lopakhin is unfazed. The sound comes from somewhere very far away (804), he says. Since he is naturally destined for the new Russia, recognizing the sound is not important for him; he is already living in the new age. The symbolism of the string snapping is even more clear at the end of Act IV, when old Firs is left alone to die. The stage directions state that, after the sound of a snapped string dying mournfully away is heard, [a] stillness falls, and nothing is heard but the thud of an ax on a tree far away in the orchard (815). With the orchard (the status of aristocracy) in the hands of Lopakhin (the new commercial class), the old days are forever gone.
