Essay On Fun Home By Alison Bechdel
Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic is an autobiography written by Alison Bechdel. The graphic novel
takes its readers through Alison Bechdel s childhood using engaging diction and detailed drawings.
One of the big themes of Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic is the discovery of one s sexual orientation.
Over the course of her life, Alison Bechdel eventually comes to the realization that she is a lesbian.
Ultimately, Alison Bechdel uses this novel to recount her experience of events that helped to shape her
personal identity, which resulted in a transformation of the way she sees herself. In the end, Fun
Home: A Family Tragicomic is a wonderful narrative that shows its readers the complexity of personal
identity, and how things like love, the values of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is no secret that when Alison Bechdel was a child, homosexuality was not exactly met with open
arms. Due to the unpleasant views many heterosexuals had in regards to homosexuality, Alison
Bechdel was at first quite cautious when it came to being open about her newfound sexual orientation;
however, she eventually opened herself up to her family, friends, and the world about who she is and
did not let the political prejudices of others stop her. This is evident when Bechdel writes, It was in
that tremulous state that I determined to tell my parents. Keeping it from them had started to seem
ludicrous anyway (76). Here, Bechdel decides to come out to her parents, deciding that it was absurd
not to tell them. Evidently, the prejudices of society could not keep Alison Bechdel down, and this
resulted in her personality being shaped by the courage of being oneself, which is hardly an easy thing

Essay about Beyond the Climate Crisis
Beyond the Climate Crisis
It s not secret that the human race is harming the planet. People cut down forests, release toxic gases
into the air, and dump pollutants into the waterways. It s a way of life and some of these activities are
actually necessary to carry on civilized life. Nevertheless, there are ways to reduce harmful effects on
the planet, and the human race is actually making progress in reducing emissions and replacing the
trees that are constantly cut down. However, not all options are being pursued. Reasons for this go
beyond the general skepticism of global warming and the like. There is both economic and political
favorability in environmental negligence, and behind every one of these reasons, one simple truth ...

This is a photograph of a factory in the outskirts of Beijing. Unfortunately, this is where many of the
blue collar factory workers also live, so they are exposed to the toxic smoke almost 24 hours a day.
Not only the blue collar workers are affected; about one percent of the Beijing population actually
lives in areas that have clean air according to a standard set by the European Union (Kahn). The
photographer who took this picture chose the right subjects. One of the silhouettes appears to be
coughing, and in a more gruesome gallery, Lu Guang documents people that have been affected by
toxins, both in air and water, in a polluted China. These acute health risks are a problem for the
Chinese residents, but the pollution poses a long term threat to the entire world. China currently
produces the most carbon emissions of any country in the world, just over 6 billion tons per year
(Each country s share). While this statistic may seem unimaginably big, so is the population of China.
Per capita carbon emissions from china are only about 5 tons per year, which is relatively low when
compared to almost 20 tons per capita for the United States (Each country s share). Another
unbelievable statistic is that the entire European Union combined produces almost two billion tons
less carbon dioxide than the United States. The population of the European Union is also 180 million
more. The GDP (total amount of products

The Problems Of American Schools Essay
Andrew R. Deras Dr. Jide Osikomaiya English 100 8 September 2016 The Most Compelling Problems
In American Schools As we delve back into a new year for students and teachers alike returning to
school to continue with the daily life of academics and learning, we all must be understanding of what
exactly we are sending our peers and children back to. It should be no surprise to most of us that
throughout the years we have seen countless upon countless examples from the news and through
others, that our school system is flawed in some way, shape or form. It is no longer a coincidence that
our students are only achieving 36th from the top in all total curriculum (Arnett). This is also evident
to anyone who may happen to own a T.V. and has been a viewer to these numerous articles describing
these horrible issues we have within schools firsthand (ABC News). Not only that, but schooling can
also be further compromised by politics and law related issues (Ravitch). What my goal for the essay I
am submitting to you is; to give my opinions on the current situation of public schooling in America,
discuss the issues, and back my points I will be presenting, with concrete evidence I have uncovered
in my research. I would like to make it clear that my stance on the current situation is that there is not
only a singular problem with public education, but a number of issues that inhibit students to learn
properly and function as productive members of society. An excellent place to start would

Prom Night Essay
Dream Girl at Prom Night.
Every young man and woman s dream of during high school was going to prom night. It was one of
those moments in their high school life that was very special and memorable. My senior prom was a
night to remember! It was a warm Saturday evening during the month of May. I m all dressed up
looking pretty sharp in my grey tux and black shiny shoes, my hair full of gel, smelt like a million
bucks. The day was pretty much set for me. Having my family come over to take pictures and as well
as friends before we got the show on the road.
Later on that evening, we headed to the high school and waited for all my friend s to arrive. We were
all planning to take a party bus to the prom location, it being an hour away out at some army base.
After everyone arriving and finishing up with the pictures, we went on the party bus and began to

Having to sit down and talk with them for a bit was soothing. Starting to hear noises coming from
another room, it was the dance floor. Both of us looking as the other room has our attention, we get up
and start walking towards the room. Opening up the doors you see people dancing and having a great
time. As we continue to walk in further and get our dance on, I spot my dream girl dancing by herself.
A few songs go on and suddenly a slow song starts to play. My friend Nadine was by me and she saw,
giving me the look to go ahead and ask my high school crush for a dance. I felt really nervous. Getting
the guts to finally walk up to her and ask her for a dance the most satisfying thing ever. She of course
said yes and as i had my hands on her hips and we slow danced to a song. I was nervous at first, but a
few seconds into it I felt relieved. Dancing with her for a little bit till the song died was great. We
spoke some word s and had conversation afterwards then pretty much started dancing with everyone

Partition Of The British India
Partition of British India, 1947: The Partition of British India gave birth to two new states; India and
Pakistan. Pakistan comprised two geographically and culturally separated region: a) West Pakistan and
b) East Pakistan (Bangladesh) on basis of their common religion Islam.
Language Movement: Just after independence, Pakistan ruler with a key resolution at national
education summit in Karachi in 1947 began to exclude Bengalis, inhabitant of East Pakistan, adopting
Urdu as the only state language of then Pakistan which later elicited language movement in East
Pakistan. The declaration of Mohammad Ali Jinnah in Dhaka as Urdu and only Urdu will remain as
the state language of Pakistan and the reluctance of the successive rulers to recognize the mother
language of 56% people of the total Pakistan s population drew language movement to the street that
took its final shape on 21st February 1952. On this day, Salam, Rafique, Barkat, Jabbar, Shafiul were
the heroes who laid down their lives to establish Bangla as one of the state languages of Pakistan and
seeds of Bangladeshi nationalism was sown.
Election of 1954: Bangladeshi nationalism was first projected in 1954 election when United Front
coalition of East Bengal s (later named as East Pakistan in 1955) political parties Awami League and
the Krishak Sramik Party, won the most of the seats in the East Bengal Legislative Assembly. Muslim
League got only 9 seats out of 310. So, coalition govt. with Bengali leaders was

How Would Arcite Die In The Handmaid s Tale
1. In the anthology book, The Canterbury Tales (1478), Geoffrey Chaucer asserts that control and
rules do not always work out how they were envisioned to play out no matter how much someone tries
to enforce them. The author supports this claim by showing how Palamon and Arcite s knightly oath
to be loyal to each other did not work out how they thought when they both fell in love with the same
girl, Emily. The author purposely chooses to have Arcite die in the end just as he was about to win the
girl of his dreams in order to show that nothing can be perfect no matter how much someone tries as
disorder and entropy will always exist. The intended audience appears to be those who easily get upset
when things do not go their way such as Arcite ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Evaluative: Why would Arcite use his last breath to tell how good of a man Palamon is to Emily when
he literally only die to keep her away from him in the first place? Was it a waste of his effort and of his
life as well? 3. He swore his oath that he, as a true knight, would wreak such vengeance on the tyrant
Creon that all the people of Greece would talk about how Creon, who justly deserved death, was
repaid by Theseus. (pg. 21) Theseus shows his respect and the importance that for the proper order of
things by promising to kill Creon because he refuses to allow the wives of men that he has defeated to
bury their husband s bodies which is a really bad thing especially in Greece. Theseus takes things into
his own hands and feels like it is his duty to punish Creon s savagery. Theseus feels like it is up to him
to bring balance by killing Creon. Theseus emphasizes how it is important that everybody knows what
happened to Creon which shows that it is not only vengeance that is driving Theseus but he also wants
to show the world that wrongs will not go unpunished well at least not as long as he is

Paternalism, especially in the context of Criminal Law. In order to bring these often very abstract
issues to life, we will examine a selection of high profile and prominent decisions (mainly from
Canadian courts, and frequently from the Supreme Court of Canada) which can be said to have
changed the law, and in which the judges of the court have disagreed among themselves. Cases to be
covered concern controversial issues such as Battered Woman Syndrome, Euthanasia/ Physician
Assisted Suicide, Hate Speech, Marijuana Use, Obscenity/ Pornography, Prostitution, or topics in
human rights (i.e., freedom of expression, national security and the right not to be tortured, or
religious freedom). Analysis of cases will include exploration and examination of the philosophical
aspects of crucial terms and concepts that appear in Canadian law, such as in the Criminal Code of
Canada, or in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. PLEASE NOTE: Philosophical theories
of punishment, such as deterrence (based on the ethical theory of utilitarianism), retributivism (based

Synagogue Visit
The Synagogue or Beit Knesset, the Jewish house of worship, is a very intriguing and complex
institution, and when conducting a tour, it requires a great amount of knowledge for the tourist who
have never visited a Synagogue, to have an adequate understanding of the institution. Being enrolled
in Religious Studies 217, I have gained a lot of knowledge that allow me to believe that I would be a
very informative and enlightening tour guide. When conducting a tour of a Synagogue, I would inform

The first two ceremonies I would explain are the Bar Mitzvah and the Bat Mitzvah, which are quite
similar to each other. At the age of 13, Jewish boys become a Bar Mitzvah and at the age of 12, Jewish
girls become a Bat Mitzvah. The ceremony, which usually takes place during the Shabbat morning
service, may feature the bar/bat mitzvah child leading prayers, or reading the Torah/Haftarah. If my
guest were to attend one of these ceremonies, I explain that they should dress formal, wear a tallit and
kippah, and should be respectful of the ceremony and the individuals. The next ceremony I explain to
my tourist is the male circumcision ceremony, called the Brit Milah. On the eighth day from when the
child is born, the ceremony takes place following the morning prayer. The mother of the child hands
over her child to a husband and wife due, known as the kvatters. Then the child is placed in the chair
of Elijah, a chair designated for circumcisions and the mohel, the ritual circumciser, performs the
ritual with the child s father beside him. Following the circumcision is a prayer and a festive meal,
consisting of meat, fish, dairy and wine. The last ceremony I explain, is the naming ceremony form
girls, known as Simhat Bat. This ceremony is begun with a Hebrew welcome, Brucha

A Brief Note On California s Water Crisis
The case study that I will be analyzing and responding to is a major environmental issue in many
areas, especially with the state of California. California s water crisis is a major issue that has brought
the attention to many people to try to fix the problem. With the Central Valley being the agricultural
capital of the world, the current drought issue that we are facing is not only historic, but also very
alarming for several reasons. With the current record breaking drought in California, there are three
factors that are said to be the reasons for causing the drought, which includes rising temperatures,
shortage of water from the Colorado River, and depletion in groundwater (Macdonald, 2015). With
rising temperatures over the years, the environmental changes that occur with this are an increase in
evaporation, which is taking water from reservoirs and other sources where irrigation is coming from.
With climate change with higher temperatures, this is taking away water that is needed to water the
many crops that produce vegetation that is distributed all across the United States. The threatening of
water supplies, especially here in the state of California is an issue that is very much real and is
something that should not be ignored. The second concern that comes with the water crisis in
California comes from the Colorado River water shortage. With the Colorado River being the greatest
source of water for all of Southern California, the source of water has declined

The women in Charles Dickens novel, A Tale of Two Cities, are important characters that inspire

with Lucie since she was ten years old (100). She portrays a motherly figure to Lucie, whose birth
mother died when she was very young, and takes care of her throughout the story. Miss Pross love for
Lucie and eagerness to protect her gave her the courage to kill Madame Defarge in order to protect
Lucie and her family. Furthermore, she wants the best for Lucie at all times. For example, when
multiple men came to ask for Lucie s hand in marriage, Miss Pross called them, not in the least degree

Summary Of The Professor And The Madman
Simon Winchester s interesting story, The Professor and the Madman, explains the creation of the
Oxford English Dictionary by an unlikely pair. The creators of the dictionary receive little credit for
their hard work. Simon Winchester reveals the masterminds behind the Oxford English Dictionary s
long process and shocking creation story. The subject of the story is the main character. The main
character, Doctor William Minor, is a mentally ill man who is locked away in an asylum for murder.
He offers his knowledge and love of literature to James Murry, the professor, to help with making the
Oxford English Dictionary. The purpose of the story is to bring awareness to William Minor s mental
illness. Simon Winchester uses a candid and honest tone to relay the subject and purpose of The
Professor and The Madman.
As the novel begins, the author s tone relays the subject, William Minor. Simon Winchester is very
truthful and honest in explaining William Minor s story. He fails to exclude the most shocking details.
William Minor s illness causes him to be very delusional. At times, he imagines many horrific ideas.
Winchester is very blunt in his choice of explaining Minor s hallucinations: Small boys, he believed,
were put up in the rafters above his bed; they came down when he was fast asleep (Winchester 123).
Minor believes the small boys perform inappropriate acts to him while he sleeps. The author is very
candid in describing what Minor believes takes place in his room at the

Realism In Art And Art In The 19th Century
Realism began in France in the 1840 s. It was the first unconventional, anti institutional art movement.
It challenged Neoclassicism and Romanticism by diverting every ones attention to more social issues
which were brought by the disturbed and raging 19th century. In simpler words, Realism was, opposed
to the Romanticism ways of merely representing nature, an approach to art to position oneself in the
real , whether it was scientifically, morally, constitutionally, or even theoretically. When it comes to
theoretical beliefs, Realism incorporated the progressive aims of modernism. This was done through
pursuing new certainties, by reconsidering and capsizing customary systems of philosophies and
morals.
The realistic works developed with the introduction of photography. Through it, an invention of

Romantic emotionalism as well as classical naivety was banned entirely. From this era onwards, artists
felt the freedom to portray real life situations without aesthetics. Realism influenced impressionism
and many other contemporary art styles as it imitated a liberal modification in the prominence and
purpose of art overall. To this day, the characteristic style still manages to impact visual arts and thus
can be viewed as revolutionary. In the words Stokstad, Realism, reflected the positivist belief that art
should show unvarnished truth, and realists took up subjects that were generally regarded as not
important enough for a serious work of art . It depicted how the realm esteemed working men only for
the labor they achieved, rather than their social eccentricity. In short, Realism was a trigger to portray

Gasoline Powered Vehicles
Harrison Ford once said, Nature does not need people, people need nature. In these eight simple
words, Harrison Ford has managed to boil down every single reason to switch from gasoline powered
vehicles to vehicles using alternative fuel sources. Nature does not need humans to survive; humans
need nature to survive. Complying to every human s need, moving from gasoline to an alternative fuel
source is the responsibility of each and every human being. This responsibility is bestowed upon
everyone as to obtain and improve one s environmental condition. This includes the current generation
as well as all of the following generations to come. There are many reasons to switch from gasoline
powered vehicles to vehicles using an alternative fuel source. Each main reason has several smaller
reasons that can build up and link together. The main reasons that Americans need to switch from
gasoline powered vehicles to vehicles using alternative fuels are as follows: gasoline prices are
increasing, the United States is moving from gasoline to alternative fuel sources, the environment is
deteriorating, and the emissions from gasoline vehicles are posing health risks to humans and animals.

Seeing that Hector would lose against Achilles, Zeus sympathizes with him and is tempted to rescue
him but is rebuked by Athena who says that Hector s fate is to die this way. Athena even states that
Hector s fate is beyond Zeus s ability to save him in which case he relents and allows fate to take its
course. In fact when Achilles fails to catch up with Hector, Athena tips the scales in Achilles favor.
She further poses as Hector s brother giving him false confidence that he has someone to support him
in the war that breaks out between the two. Athena assists Achilles in fighting Hector by handing him
back the spear while Hector is not aware. From the above description, Athena s character captures the
life of the societal members willing to go great heights for the destruction of their fellows. The same
energy she used to help Achilles, she could have used the same energy for the protection of Hector
who was fighting for a more worthy cause of defending his city and ridding it of the interference of
the outsiders. When Zeus tries using his power to save Hector, he is rebuked by Athena who claims it
is his fate to die in the hands of his enemies. The sharp contrasts between Zeus and Athena capture the
stark realities in the real world where there are people with good and ill motives. While there are those
who are willing to go out of their way for the good of the society,

Sports Supplements Essay
Sports Supplements
Athletes are competitive. They go out there to win. But, at all costs? Why are athletes willing to
sacrifice their long term health in order to have one outstanding season? Will it be worth it when they
are hooked up to machines in order to stay alive? Many athletes do not think that taking a supplement
will harm them. They are strong, tough athletes, nothing can harm them, right? So, they start taking
creatine or andro, or both. For most, they lose body fat, gain strength and muscle. That sounds great,
but that is not always what happens. The use of over the counter sports supplements is dangerous and
the FDA should take them off the shelf.

This is because this type of creatine is pure. The body gets its natural creatine from red meat. But, red
meat is not one hundred percent creatine. The body cannot handle the potency of this supplement.
Androstenedione (Andro) is a hormonally based supplement that is supposed to help weight lifters add
muscle. Andro is taken orally and goes to the liver. The liver destroys most of what is ingested, but
what does survive combines with various enzymes and temporarily boosts testosterone levels. This
boost in testosterone allows an athlete to perform at a level above what he usually does.
quot;Androstendione is an honest to goodness steroid and a precursor to testosterone. quot; If an
athlete takes andro before he goes to the gym, he will be able to lift more, and thus increase strength
and size. Although it is not legally considered an anabolic steroid at this time, andro acts exactly as
they do. quot; Many endocrinologists insist that the differences between supplements like
androstenedione and traditional steroids (which are legal only for certain medical conditions) are
trivial. quot; In Canada a prescription is needed to get andro, but in the US it is an over the counter
drug. If they essentially have the same effects, then one should not be illegal and the other legal.
quot; The American College of Sports Medicine says anabolic steroids such as androstenedione as well
as other dietary supplements should be reevaluated and considered

The Underrepresentation Of Women In Film
Women are often underrepresented in many fields and occupations in today s day in age, whether it be
STEM careers, big business CEOs, or in the case of this paper, film directors. Often the females that
are present and well known, still face a large amount of discrimination. Male directors make more
than 90 percent of films, reinforcing the anonymity of women in the film industry. In 2015, women
only accounted for seven percent of the directors of big Hollywood movies. In Brent Lang s article,

that women are best represented as producers (23%) followed by executive producers (19%), editors

In The Virgin Suicides, we see the Lisbon sisters lounging around their bedroom. In Lost in

A Brief Description of Alex Rodriguez
The star third baseman, the man with the incredible swing, and the quarter billion dollar man. All
these things can be used to describe Alex Rodriguez but now you can add cheater, liar, and drug
abuser. Alex Rodriguez, also known as A Rod, has been involved in an investigation going on for over
a year about his use of performance enhancing steroids. Starting on January 29th, 2013 Alex
Rodriguez s name was included in an article by the Miami New Times that link him to Biogenesis, an
anti aging clinic that had been discovered to be supplying MLB players with performance enhancing
drugs. Rodriguez, along with star right fielder Ryan Braun and 17 others, became part of the longest
doping suspension in history. All of the other players accepted the 50 60 game suspensions, but
Rodriguez would receive an unprecedented 211 game suspension. This caused Rodriguez to appeal.
The MLB released the following statement explaining the extended suspension of Rodriguez. For use
and possession of numerous forms of prohibited performance enhancing drugs substances, including
Testosterone and Human Growth Hormone, over the course of multiple years. For attempting to cover
up his violations of the Program by engaging in a course of conduct intended to obstruct and frustrate
the Office of the Commissioners suspension. Rodriguez announced that he would continue his appeal.
When the hearing for Rodriguez s case began on September 30th 2013, the MLB stated their case first.

Literary Analysis Of Nadine Gordimer s Once Upon A Time
Not all Once Upon a Time stories end in a happily ever after. In society, some men and women
overprotect their children so intensely that occasionally this puts them in more danger which leads
many to say that they are metaphorically in a prison. This leads to an unhealthy lifestyle for children
all around the world that has protective parents. Adding multiple layers of body armor just weighs you
down. In the short story Once Upon a Time, author Nadine Gordimer, uses point of view to show the
problem in the story, the problem is about excessive protection and how it ends up failing dramatically
but not in the way you think, maybe if the family would have moved things would not have ended up
the way it did. Once Upon a Time is a short story with fairy tale characteristics, like all short stories it

The purpose of the short story is to show how the act of overprotecting could be a problem while it

the story as well as the setting. In the beginning though it can be seen she uses first person and talks
about her experience. The family that Nadine Gordimer writes about in this short story builds multiple
protective measurements to ensure the safety of their family and their child, due to the riots happening
all around the city. However, the family s way of protecting themselves made it feel like a prison
rather than their own house. The author displayed this when writing, So from every window and door

In every moment of our lives, we handle a tremendous amount of large data, this large data will
become a store of values if we could be turned it into searchable information involving analysis steps.
The big challenge is that 90% of the large data are unstructured data which is growing faster than
structured data, unstructured data as a data warehouse come without any predefined data structure and
not appropriate with any relational database schema.
We used the expression A huge database when data is accumulated and increased rapidly, The a huge
is a relative matter, but in general, a huge database is a data set that exceeds the size or capacity of
conventional database tools to fetch, store, manage and analyze that data. Which means that the
challenge is manifold when we try to analyze and extract a meaningful value from a huge unstructured

Physical Conflicts In Jeannette s The Glass Castle
In the book, The Glass Castle, the Walls encounter many interior and exterior conflicts. The children
learned how to fend for themselves because their parents were not suitable for that job. Jeannette and
Brian, two of the Walls children, took responsibility for themselves and their siblings. Jeannette retold
this true story from her point of view. The characters struggles did not end in one place. The Walls
were constantly on the move because their living situations were always temporary. They switched
from their car to a family house in Welch. Once the kids became older, some of them decided to move
to New York City to skyrocket their careers. Weaved into all of this chaos, were a few underlying
themes. The reader was taken on the children s journey and witnessed them blossom. They had to
mature quickly because their parents stripped them from their childhood. This was difficult and a lot
of pressure for these young kids. They had to persevere which in turn made them stronger individuals.
The rich characters, surplus of settings, and easily comprehensible themes made this a successful
novel. The variation of characters help the reader keep interest. Although this book is from a first
person point of view, it is easy to comprehend the emotions and visualize the events occurring. The
feeling of the book would change completely if the array of characters were not included. Each Wall
child has a significant part in Jeanette s story. Jeannette is a

Causes And Effects Of Multiple Personality Disorders
There are many cases that can be found in psychological records for multiple personality disorders
also, known as dissociative identity disorder. Dissociative Identity, formerly known as multiple
personality disorder, is a condition in which an individual has a host personality along with at least
two or more personalities with each identity having his or her own ideas, memories, thoughts and way
of doing things (Bennick). Personality disorders are a group of mental illnesses, they involve thoughts
and behaviors that are unhealthy and inflexible. A person with a personality disorder has trouble
perceiving and relating to situations and people (Mayo Clinic). This causes significant problems and
limitations in relationships, social activities, work and school (Mayo Clinic). In some cases, you may
not realize that you have a personality disorder because your way of thinking and behaving seems
natural to you, but in all honesty, it s not. You also might blame others for the challenges you face
(Mayo Clinic). Personality disorders usually begin in the teenage years or early adulthood (Mayo
Clinic). There are many types of personality disorders. Some types may become less obvious
throughout middle age (Mayo Clinic). The most common types of personality disorders are divided
into three clusters. Many people with one personality disorder also have signs and symptoms of at
least one additional personality disorder. Personality disorders in cluster A are

Importance Of Canadian Literature
Studying Literature in Grade 12
In this essay, I will prove that graduating students in Ontario should only study Canadian literature in
a Grade 12 English course. While good writers exist in all cultures, Ontario students should only study
Canadian writers. Becoming more familiar with our literature. Three reasons for this are; the need to
focus on our own Canadian culture despite being surrounded by other cultures: the need to promote
and establish our own writers, and the need to encourage younger Canadian authors.
I believe that students in Ontario taking English should only study Canadian literature because we are
completely swamped by the American culture around us. I think that this is a Canadian tradition
because we have always been a branch plant of another country starting with England and France
meaning that our own culture has never had the chance to develop since we have always been under
the thumb of a more powerful foreign culture. So, for years, a student in Ontario would study
Shakespeare and other British writers, today they may also study American authors such as
Hemingway. But many schools limit a student s exposure to the Canadian novel to ISP reading lists. In
this sense, Canada is an attic in which we have stored American and British literature without
considering our own. 1 No wonder a Canadian student has problems appreciating their culture.
Often what Canadian literature is studied is very old. This includes works such as Margaret Laurence s

The Importance Of Uniforms In School
In many schools around the United States, multiple females are told that their choice of clothing is
inappropriate and distracting to the male students. In some cases, girls admit that being told to change
or being sent home sometimes lowers their self esteem, especially when the boys are also breaking
dress code but are not getting in trouble for it. Girls are told that a boy s education is more important
than their own. Even though most young men will admit they are not distracted by the clothing girls
wear, the excuse, boys will be boys is used to disregard their behavior and are not punished for their
actions. Young women are being sexuallized for the clothing they wear and are being told they need to
cover up for the sake of their safety, instead of teaching young men to control themselves. As women,
we are told to cover our bodies and not show anything that society says is inappropriate that could
potentially distract a boy. On public school campuses, young girls are told that even the slightest bit of
skin is inappropriate. They are told that their shoulders, mid thighs and midriffs are considered
distracting to a boy s learning environment. Ellen Friedrichs said in 2014, Any confidence and pride
she might take in her appearance is automatically stripped from her when she is dressed
inappropriately. Young girls are being body shamed for being confident in their own skin. Over 70%
of girls ages 15 to 17 avoid normal daily activities, such as attending school,

Figurative Language In Hamlet
Authors express the complexities of being human by using figurative language. figurative language
exaggerates feelings or just simply expresses them in a way compared to something else so you
understand the way the character feels. Figurative language can take one emotion and describe it in
many different ways. For example one feeling can be expressed using a smile, metaphor,
personification, or any literary device. In Hamlet Act 1, he expresses his dismay on how his mother
could go from being married to a man who is so much less King Hamlet. He says My fathers brother,
but no more like my father than I to Hercules. This is a simile that means his uncle that is now married
to his mom is nothing like the man his father, King Hamlet was. Hamlet

The Nuns Priest s Tale
The Nun s Priest s Tale is an allegory that uses animals with human characteristics in order to portray
the moral of the story. The story centers on a rooster named Chanticleer, who possesses many human
qualities, such as speaking, singing, and the ability to dream. Partlet, a hen, is described as polite,
discreet, debonair, and companionable (153). These are characteristics not typically associated with
animals, which strengthens the message that the animals are representative of humans. Furthermore,
Chanticleer and the other animals display human emotions, such as Chanticleer s fear of his dream,
Partlet s disgust of Chanticleer s fear, and the love that Chanticleer and Partlet feel for one another.
Furthermore, the fox, Sir Russell, also ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This moral is illustrated by the events of the tale; Sir Russell flatters Chanticleer by complimenting his
singing, and he tells him to sing with his eyes closed. Chanticleer is very flattered by this and does
what Sir Russell says, allowing Sir Russell to grab Chanticleer and bring him to the woods. After
Chanticleer escapes, Sir Russell tries to trick him once more, but Chanticleer has learned his lesson,
stating I will curse myself . . . if you trick me once more. Never again shall you with your flattery get
me to sing with my eyes closed, (164). Chanticleer singing with his eyes closed is representative of the
ways in which humans can be fooled and deceived when faced with flattery. The moral of the tale is
reinforced by these events, again demonstrating how the story of the animals is representative of
human nature. Moreover, within the main story, there is a discussion of other stories, including
different perspectives on the importance of dreams. Though Partlet believes that there is nothing but
vanity in dreams (154), Chanticleer explains how this is untrue, and in the process, he discusses two
other stories he knows that reinforce his belief that dreams are significant of joy as well as of trouble
(156). The inclusion of these stories reaffirms the depiction of the animals as having human qualities,
as Chanticleer and Partlet discuss the importance of dreams in an intellectual style. This also
reinforces the tale as more than just a story about animals, but rather an important tale about human

Why Is Socrates My Teacher
Socrates was the first Athenian philosopher and he is very interesting figure, not only of his teaching

closely connected with relations which will be build between the teacher and a student and he as a
teacher should give to the student all accumulated experience of previous older generations. I want to
have Socrates as my teacher, because of the fact that, all his philosophy and teaching methods are
relevant and important nowadays too, even if he was living in Ancient Greece many years ago.

Epistemology is a part of philosophy about the nature of knowledge and explains what knowledge

A profound number of the college students I interviewed felt that Bob Dylan s 1960s The Times They
are a Changin and Tupac Shakur 1992 Keep Ya Head Up a reference to the L.A. riots, spoke more to
their reasoning. They talked about how these two songs relied on human logic to establish their
arguments and convince them of their meaningfulness through their lyrics. Appeals to reason are
derived from logic and adapted in such a way as to appeal to and have an effect on an audience
(Bailey, 2006). The songs, The Times They Are a Changin and Keep Ya head up both explores the
illogical nature of the traditional way of thinking at the time. Throughout the songs, both artist use
verbal opposition and argumentative statements to logically criticize the traditional way of thinking
about race and war. In various stanzas of Tupac song, he draws attention to various injustices and how
blind the nation is when it still comes to race. He says They got money or wars, but can t feed tha

Effective Leadership For A Business Protocol
Effective leadership in a business obliges knowing how to communicate with all components of the

Satire Definition Essay
Humor, for many, is a cheap laugh and a way to brighten someone s day. But for others, humor goes
beyond that. Often times in today s world, humor is used to convey messages about dangerous or
impossible to state topics. Society allows humorists to speak about unpalatable topics since the
delivery of the message is masked. Humorists take difficult messages and use creative humor to make
them more accepted into society.
Have you ever read a statement that made you double take because it said one thing, but meant
opposite? That is called satire. Satire presents a surface level message, but really, in the subtext, the
meaning was the opposite of what it seemed. Satire is seen in the world all around us. For example A

Private Property In John Locke s Social Contract
In his social contract, Locke also specified the purpose of a legitimate government and clarified how a
legitimate government can exercise authority. Aside from providing security and addressing
inconveniences found in the state of nature, Locke argued that the purpose of government is to protect
people s private property. Property is a profound component of Locke s social contract as it is tangible
and gives people more autonomy over their lives. According to
Locke, property becomes private once man adds his labor to public property. As the man improved the
public property in some manner, he can officially lay his claim to it. Owning property allows people to
improve their living conditions and can empower strong economic actors. Locke

  • 2. Essay On Fun Home By Alison Bechdel Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic is an autobiography written by Alison Bechdel. The graphic novel takes its readers through Alison Bechdel s childhood using engaging diction and detailed drawings. One of the big themes of Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic is the discovery of one s sexual orientation. Over the course of her life, Alison Bechdel eventually comes to the realization that she is a lesbian. Ultimately, Alison Bechdel uses this novel to recount her experience of events that helped to shape her personal identity, which resulted in a transformation of the way she sees herself. In the end, Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic is a wonderful narrative that shows its readers the complexity of personal identity, and how things like love, the values of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is no secret that when Alison Bechdel was a child, homosexuality was not exactly met with open arms. Due to the unpleasant views many heterosexuals had in regards to homosexuality, Alison Bechdel was at first quite cautious when it came to being open about her newfound sexual orientation; however, she eventually opened herself up to her family, friends, and the world about who she is and did not let the political prejudices of others stop her. This is evident when Bechdel writes, It was in that tremulous state that I determined to tell my parents. Keeping it from them had started to seem ludicrous anyway (76). Here, Bechdel decides to come out to her parents, deciding that it was absurd not to tell them. Evidently, the prejudices of society could not keep Alison Bechdel down, and this resulted in her personality being shaped by the courage of being oneself, which is hardly an easy thing to ... • 3. Essay about Beyond the Climate Crisis Beyond the Climate Crisis It s not secret that the human race is harming the planet. People cut down forests, release toxic gases into the air, and dump pollutants into the waterways. It s a way of life and some of these activities are actually necessary to carry on civilized life. Nevertheless, there are ways to reduce harmful effects on the planet, and the human race is actually making progress in reducing emissions and replacing the trees that are constantly cut down. However, not all options are being pursued. Reasons for this go beyond the general skepticism of global warming and the like. There is both economic and political favorability in environmental negligence, and behind every one of these reasons, one simple truth ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is a photograph of a factory in the outskirts of Beijing. Unfortunately, this is where many of the blue collar factory workers also live, so they are exposed to the toxic smoke almost 24 hours a day. Not only the blue collar workers are affected; about one percent of the Beijing population actually lives in areas that have clean air according to a standard set by the European Union (Kahn). The photographer who took this picture chose the right subjects. One of the silhouettes appears to be coughing, and in a more gruesome gallery, Lu Guang documents people that have been affected by toxins, both in air and water, in a polluted China. These acute health risks are a problem for the Chinese residents, but the pollution poses a long term threat to the entire world. China currently produces the most carbon emissions of any country in the world, just over 6 billion tons per year (Each country s share). While this statistic may seem unimaginably big, so is the population of China. Per capita carbon emissions from china are only about 5 tons per year, which is relatively low when compared to almost 20 tons per capita for the United States (Each country s share). Another unbelievable statistic is that the entire European Union combined produces almost two billion tons less carbon dioxide than the United States. The population of the European Union is also 180 million more. The GDP (total amount of products ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Problems Of American Schools Essay Andrew R. Deras Dr. Jide Osikomaiya English 100 8 September 2016 The Most Compelling Problems In American Schools As we delve back into a new year for students and teachers alike returning to school to continue with the daily life of academics and learning, we all must be understanding of what exactly we are sending our peers and children back to. It should be no surprise to most of us that throughout the years we have seen countless upon countless examples from the news and through others, that our school system is flawed in some way, shape or form. It is no longer a coincidence that our students are only achieving 36th from the top in all total curriculum (Arnett). This is also evident to anyone who may happen to own a T.V. and has been a viewer to these numerous articles describing these horrible issues we have within schools firsthand (ABC News). Not only that, but schooling can also be further compromised by politics and law related issues (Ravitch). What my goal for the essay I am submitting to you is; to give my opinions on the current situation of public schooling in America, discuss the issues, and back my points I will be presenting, with concrete evidence I have uncovered in my research. I would like to make it clear that my stance on the current situation is that there is not only a singular problem with public education, but a number of issues that inhibit students to learn properly and function as productive members of society. An excellent place to start would ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It was one of those moments in their high school life that was very special and memorable. My senior prom was a night to remember! It was a warm Saturday evening during the month of May. I m all dressed up looking pretty sharp in my grey tux and black shiny shoes, my hair full of gel, smelt like a million bucks. The day was pretty much set for me. Having my family come over to take pictures and as well as friends before we got the show on the road. Later on that evening, we headed to the high school and waited for all my friend s to arrive. As we continue to walk in further and get our dance on, I spot my dream girl dancing by herself. A few songs go on and suddenly a slow song starts to play. My friend Nadine was by me and she saw, giving me the look to go ahead and ask my high school crush for a dance. I felt really nervous. Getting the guts to finally walk up to her and ask her for a dance the most satisfying thing ever. She of course said yes and as i had my hands on her hips and we slow danced to a song. The declaration of Mohammad Ali Jinnah in Dhaka as Urdu and only Urdu will remain as the state language of Pakistan and the reluctance of the successive rulers to recognize the mother language of 56% people of the total Pakistan s population drew language movement to the street that took its final shape on 21st February 1952. • 7. How Would Arcite Die In The Handmaid s Tale 1. In the anthology book, The Canterbury Tales (1478), Geoffrey Chaucer asserts that control and rules do not always work out how they were envisioned to play out no matter how much someone tries to enforce them. The author supports this claim by showing how Palamon and Arcite s knightly oath to be loyal to each other did not work out how they thought when they both fell in love with the same girl, Emily. The author purposely chooses to have Arcite die in the end just as he was about to win the girl of his dreams in order to show that nothing can be perfect no matter how much someone tries as disorder and entropy will always exist. The intended audience appears to be those who easily get upset when things do not go their way such as Arcite ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (pg. 21) Theseus shows his respect and the importance that for the proper order of things by promising to kill Creon because he refuses to allow the wives of men that he has defeated to bury their husband s bodies which is a really bad thing especially in Greece. Theseus takes things into his own hands and feels like it is his duty to punish Creon s savagery. Theseus feels like it is up to him to bring balance by killing Creon. In order to bring these often very abstract issues to life, we will examine a selection of high profile and prominent decisions (mainly from Canadian courts, and frequently from the Supreme Court of Canada) which can be said to have changed the law, and in which the judges of the court have disagreed among themselves. Cases to be covered concern controversial issues such as Battered Woman Syndrome, Euthanasia/ Physician Assisted Suicide, Hate Speech, Marijuana Use, Obscenity/ Pornography, Prostitution, or topics in human rights (i.e., freedom of expression, national security and the right not to be tortured, or religious freedom). Analysis of cases will include exploration and examination of the philosophical aspects of crucial terms and concepts that appear in Canadian law, such as in the Criminal Code of Canada, or in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Synagogue Visit The Synagogue or Beit Knesset, the Jewish house of worship, is a very intriguing and complex institution, and when conducting a tour, it requires a great amount of knowledge for the tourist who have never visited a Synagogue, to have an adequate understanding of the institution. Being enrolled in Religious Studies 217, I have gained a lot of knowledge that allow me to believe that I would be a very informative and enlightening tour guide. The ceremony, which usually takes place during the Shabbat morning service, may feature the bar/bat mitzvah child leading prayers, or reading the Torah/Haftarah. If my guest were to attend one of these ceremonies, I explain that they should dress formal, wear a tallit and kippah, and should be respectful of the ceremony and the individuals. The next ceremony I explain to my tourist is the male circumcision ceremony, called the Brit Milah. On the eighth day from when the child is born, the ceremony takes place following the morning prayer. The mother of the child hands over her child to a husband and wife due, known as the kvatters. Then the child is placed in the chair of Elijah, a chair designated for circumcisions and the mohel, the ritual circumciser, performs the ritual with the child s father beside him. • 10. A Brief Note On California s Water Crisis The case study that I will be analyzing and responding to is a major environmental issue in many areas, especially with the state of California. California s water crisis is a major issue that has brought the attention to many people to try to fix the problem. With the Central Valley being the agricultural capital of the world, the current drought issue that we are facing is not only historic, but also very alarming for several reasons. With the current record breaking drought in California, there are three factors that are said to be the reasons for causing the drought, which includes rising temperatures, shortage of water from the Colorado River, and depletion in groundwater (Macdonald, 2015). With rising temperatures over the years, the environmental changes that occur with this are an increase in evaporation, which is taking water from reservoirs and other sources where irrigation is coming from. With climate change with higher temperatures, this is taking away water that is needed to water the many crops that produce vegetation that is distributed all across the United States. The threatening of water supplies, especially here in the state of California is an issue that is very much real and is something that should not be ignored. The second concern that comes with the water crisis in California comes from the Colorado River water shortage. With the Colorado River being the greatest source of water for all of Southern California, the source of water has declined ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Importance Of Canadian Literature Studying Literature in Grade 12 In this essay, I will prove that graduating students in Ontario should only study Canadian literature in a Grade 12 English course. While good writers exist in all cultures, Ontario students should only study Canadian writers. Becoming more familiar with our literature. Three reasons for this are; the need to focus on our own Canadian culture despite being surrounded by other cultures: the need to promote and establish our own writers, and the need to encourage younger Canadian authors. I believe that students in Ontario taking English should only study Canadian literature because we are completely swamped by the American culture around us. I think that this is a Canadian tradition because we have always been a branch plant of another country starting with England and France meaning that our own culture has never had the chance to develop since we have always been under the thumb of a more powerful foreign culture. So, for years, a student in Ontario would study Shakespeare and other British writers, today they may also study American authors such as Hemingway. But many schools limit a student s exposure to the Canadian novel to ISP reading lists. Chanticleer is very flattered by this and does what Sir Russell says, allowing Sir Russell to grab Chanticleer and bring him to the woods. After Chanticleer escapes, Sir Russell tries to trick him once more, but Chanticleer has learned his lesson, stating I will curse myself . . . if you trick me once more. Never again shall you with your flattery get me to sing with my eyes closed, (164). Chanticleer singing with his eyes closed is representative of the ways in which humans can be fooled and deceived when faced with flattery. The moral of the tale is reinforced by these events, again demonstrating how the story of the animals is representative of human nature. Moreover, within the main story, there is a discussion of other stories, including different perspectives on the importance of dreams. Though Partlet believes that there is nothing but vanity in dreams (154), Chanticleer explains how this is untrue, and in the process, he discusses two other stories he knows that reinforce his belief that dreams are significant of joy as well as of trouble (156). The inclusion of these stories reaffirms the depiction of the animals as having human qualities, as Chanticleer and Partlet discuss the importance of dreams in an intellectual style. This also reinforces the tale as more than just a story about animals, but rather an important tale about human ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. Sir Galahad And Sir Gawain Comparison Arthurian stories have been around for hundreds of years, and many people still read them today. Sir Gawain, in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight by the Pearl Poet, is a righteous, noble, and loyal knight along with Sir Galahad in Le Morte D Arthur by Sir Thomas Malory. Sir Gawain and Sir Galahad are similar because both are very religious, but they are also different in the fact that Sir Galahad is a considered a perfect knight and Sir Gawain does not quite meet that level. Sir Gawain and Sir Galahad are similar because both are very religious. Sir Gawain is religious because he refuses to sleep with the lady of the castle when she comes in his room and tries to seduce him. He does not fall for her charms because it is against the Code of Chivalry. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Sir Gawain is not perfect because when Launcelot killed Sir Gawain s brothers, Sir Gaheris and Sir Gareth, Sir Gawain got angry and wanted revenge against him. Majesty, as I am your subject and a knight, so I swear that I shall be revenged upon Sir Launcelot. I pray you muster your armies. In your cause and in mine we shall march against them; and even if we march through seven realms, I shall not stay until Sir Launcelot is dead, or I am (502). Since Sir Gawain wants to kill Sir Launcelot, this does not make him a Christian role model. On the contrary, Sir Galahad never did anything immoral and stayed pure. He is considered a perfect knight. Sir Galahad, flower of all knighthood, whose coming I have awaited for so long, welcome! I pray you take me in your arms and hold me to your breast, for you alone, true servant of Christ that you are, possess the virginity of the white lily together with the virtue of the burning rose: qualities of the Holy Ghost, by which my flesh shall be made young again (442). King Mordrayns said Sir Galahad is the flower of all knighthood , which portrays him to be one of the best knights. Sir Galahad is a perfect knight and stays true to the Lord while Sir Gawain tries to be a perfect knight but is not because of how he can not stay true to God and performs immoral, selfish ... He means by this phrase, that we must question all what we taught, understand or already know, the doubts is the background of wisdom and for one hundred percent we can know only that we know nothing, so we need to question everything. Furthermore, Socrates as philosopher is famous for his work on logic and epistemology. Epistemology is a part of philosophy about the nature of knowledge and explains what knowledge exactly is. In addition in today s world people deviate from the norms of morality and forget about kindness, honesty, tolerance, all are just trying to survive in cruelty and all think only about themselves. A profound number of the college students I interviewed felt that Bob Dylan s 1960s The Times They are a Changin and Tupac Shakur 1992 Keep Ya Head Up a reference to the L.A. riots, spoke more to their reasoning. They talked about how these two songs relied on human logic to establish their arguments and convince them of their meaningfulness through their lyrics. Appeals to reason are derived from logic and adapted in such a way as to appeal to and have an effect on an audience (Bailey, 2006). The songs, The Times They Are a Changin and Keep Ya head up both explores the illogical nature of the traditional way of thinking at the time. Throughout the songs, both artist use verbal opposition and argumentative statements to logically criticize the traditional way of thinking about race and war. In various stanzas of Tupac song, he draws attention to various injustices and how blind the nation is when it still comes to race. He says They got money or wars, but can t feed tha poor, say their ain t no hope for the youth and the truth is. It can t no hope for tha future. We ain t meant to survive cause it s a setup and even if you re fed up, ya got keep your head up (Shakur, 1992). In the case of this song many of the students felt Tupac gave great reasoning with how we have money for wars but not to feed the poor and how the government and society does in fact setup some races to fail more than others. The students came to the revelation through the reasoning given how this still holds true even in today s society, with police brutality and unlawful stops because of the color of a person s ...
