The Problem Of Traffic Lights
The idea for traffic lights began in the mid 1800s when a system was essential to sustain the
amassed flow of horse drawn traffic flow. By 1868, a signal was put in by the intersection of
George St and Bridge St, which is close to the Parliament. The installment provided pedestrians a
safe crossing, and an answer to officials that need to sustain traffic.
The semaphore involves a signal of a tall post with movable arm. When the arm is aligned
sideways, it mean stop. After dark, a gas lamp was lit at the top. The green lenses means to go,
and red means stop. Originally, the signal is controlled by hand, and the officers decided when
the signal to be changed according to traffic flow. They would also whistle to remind drivers,
when the signal will change. However, this method turned out to be hazardous. In 1869, a leak in
one of the gas lines led to a traffic signal explosion. The incident severely wounding the policeman
operating it, and led to the semaphore project to be terminated in London.
In America, the semaphore were be rolled out to public because there were more motorists
travelling on the road. However, many problems arose due to officers finding it to be difficult to
sustain the traffic congestion. Some cities started to install traffic towers, which allowed officers to
have a clearer view to monitor the traffic in an elevated platform.
In the early 1900s, the automobiles just gain popularity throughout the world and traffic becomes
busier results. Car were

Asian Cultural Identity
Growing up as an Asian American, I often struggle to identify my own cultural identity. Being the
first generation of both my mother and father s side of the family, I more than often get confused
between American and Asian culture when applying them to society or at home. While being
raised at home, I am largely influenced by culture and traditions from Asian parents and relatives.
However, when I go to school or someplace else, I am heavily judged for practicing part of my
Asian culture because it is entirely different than western or American. With that being noted, I
began to learn and adapt to the western culture in hopes of fitting with society as well of trying to
keep my Asian culture intact. As can be seen, this situation I dealt with is the same problem the
whole Asian Americancommunity faces. Mainly focusing on younger generations like me for
example, the Asian American community struggles to adapt to the western culture because they
were raised with an Asian influence. Wishing to fit in society and be part of the social norms, the
Asian Americans community faces issues that identify their cultural identity.
A child growing up in a certain environment is influenced on how he or she takes action in a
society. Such as Asian American children being exposed to two kinds of cultures, one that is Asian
and the other American. Asian American children being born in the United Statesare heavily
influenced by home life and society. Branding them with stereotypes and other

The Pros And Cons Of Single Parents
I was raised in a single parent household for much of my life. I can say that children who are
raised in a single family home have been looked at as being different for many years. Being
raised by only one parent seems hard or even impossible to many, yet over time it has become
more of the norm. Throughout society today, many children have grown up to become mentally
stable and successful whether they had one or two parents to help navigate them on the road of
life. Where the problem lies is in the difference of children raised by single parents versus
children raised by both a mother and a father. This topic has become a very thought provoking
argument with various questions being asked such as; Does a child need both parents? Should the
government provide help or services for single parents? What role do step parents and step siblings
play? People need to understand that to properly raise a child, they should not focus on the structure
of the family, but should be focused on the values and processes that are taught while their children
grow and mature. Children of a single parent household can continually grow and excel just as well
as children with a two parent household.
Some people think that children can only grow to their full potential by being raised by both a
mother and a father. For one parent to raise a child by themselves, it can be difficult for several
reasons. A single parent must work full time or with today s job market, work numerous part time
jobs

Essay about Literature Review
Abstract Individuals undergoing cardiac surgery can be of any age and functional ability. This
literature review examines the correlation between the patient s ability to engage in self care
behaviors and the efficacy of their rehabilitation. Using Orem s Self Care Nursing Deficit Theory
and Bandura s Self Efficacy Theory peer reviewed research studies were selected from accredited
journals using CINHAL, Ovid, PubMed and Google Scholar ranging from 1988 to 2009. The
literature reviewed indicated that the patients perceived ability to engage in self care behaviors

Butterfly Circus Essay
Recently I watched the short film Butterfly Circus by Joshua Weigel and I was very pleased.
Prior to watching the movie, only having read the title I immediately thought this was going to be
a cartoon for a young child. As I watched the first scene I shortly realized this was not the case.
Weigel introduces a familiar face Nick Vujicic, The Limbless man, a main character in this short
film. The film is about the famous showman going to a small circus sideshowand finding the
magnificent limbless man in a time of anguish while being bullied by the audience and other
members of the freak show. After the limbless man s encounter with the showman he is forced to
gain hope against anything negative he has ever believed.
This movie opens with the setting in the depression era. A fleet of old cars traveling down a dirt
road passing families as they watch the car caravan with sorrowful eyes. Inside the fleet of old
cars is the company of the renowned Butterfly Circus on their way to the next town to lift the
spirits of their audiences. As they pass a sign for a carnival sideshow, the little boy asks the
driver if they can go. The driver answers reluctantly so the little boy ask Mr. Mendez, the famous
showman, and he says, why not . Among the carousel, the fortune teller, and the games they find
the show that everyone has come to see. There sits a small tent that is known as the best freak
show in town . In this company of freaks there is the Bearded lady, Siamese Twins, Fat

How Did Ancient Africa Dbq
Ancient Africa held many treasures like gold and salt that could be used to build a large empire.
A few men did exactly that. African empires were wealthy and great before men from Europe came
onto the scene. Before the arrival of the Europeans, African civilizations from 300 to 1400 CE were
wealthy, flourished in trade, and encouraged things like education, the arts, and security.
Civilizations in Africa like Mali, Ghana, and Kilwa all exhibited great wealth enjoyed by many in
the empire. In document 2, Ghana s gold and salt trade are shown to have made the kingdom
very rich and powerful. The king s court had very luxurious items and this showcased their
wealth, one of the reasons the Europeans came to Africa in the first place. Mansa Musa, the
ruler of Mali, also had riches, and he handed them out while traveling through Cairo to Mecca
(doc 4). Finally, the city state of Kilwa was considered one of the most beautiful places in the
world by Ibn Battuta (doc 8). African cities were very wealthy from the gold and salt mines on
the continent and it was very beneficial to them. Trade was a big deal in Africa, and the location of

a higher price than that of any other good (doc 5). Mali also viewed security and justice as very
important things to include in a society (doc 6). They were always fair and the citizens and
tourists were never afraid. Finally, bronze was important, and went through a very lengthy process
to make beautiful and amazing figures (doc 7). Aspects that make a society complex were valued

Enterococcus Faecalis Research Paper
Enterococcus Faecalis In 1899, Thiercelin found a new gram positive diplococcus that he named
enterocoque, suggesting that he believed that this bacterium had something to do with the
intestines. He also described finding this bacterium in patients who had enteritis, appendicitis and
meningitis (Murray). In 1906, Andrewes and Hoarder isolated this same bacterium from a patient
suffering from endocarditis and they also discovered a relationship with urinary tract infections.
They named it Streptococcus faecalis, again because of similarities to the human intestinal tract
(Murray). Other early 20th century instances of infection where S. faecalis has been associated but
not known to be definitively causative include wound infections after World War I, osteomyelitis,...

What Were The Primary Reasons For The Fall Of Rome
What were the primary reasons for the fall of Rome? Here are some of the three main reasons
why the Roman Empire fell, and the causes of this fall. To start of with in the second year of the
reign of Valens in 366 ce a disaster happened..an earthquake came upon the roman empire and
destroyed numerous amounts of cities. But the roman empire was not prepared for this earthquake,
this caused many deaths. Also shores were left dry in the mediterranean but then the tide returned
very soon with the weight of a flood which returned on the coasts of Sicily,Greece, and Egypt, all of
this caused over fifty thousand deaths in the city of Alexandria. After that then plagues swept over
the empire which brought all kinds of diseases from southern asia.

Causes Of The Boston Tea Party
On December 16, 1773, a group of overtaxed, oppressed, and overlooked colonists dumped 342
boxes of tea from Britain into the cold, dark depths of the Boston Harbor. The British Parliament
had been gradually raising the colonists taxes, taxing anything that could possibly be taxed,
continually pushing the colonists to the edge of rebellion. The TeaAct was passed on May 10, 1773,
granting the British East India Trading Company a government sanctioned monopoly on tea,
forcing the colonists to buy tea from Britain alone. Although it didn t create any additional taxes,
the colonists were so infuriated at Parliament for recent similar impositions that the Tea Act of 1773
was the grain of rice that tipped the scale for the colonists, causing them to ruin around ВЈ18,000
worth of tea. Despite destroying so much property, the Mohawks took care not to harm an members
of the crew (Schweikart and Allen, 75). The Boston Tea Partywas the correct response to the Tea
Act on top of others for three reasons; it revealed the colonists oppression, it encouraged the
colonists independence, and it set a great example for revolutions in the future. However, there is
still some debate as to whether the Boston Tea Party was a reasonable response to the oppressive
acts of the British Parliament. For example, it can be argued that the colonists could ve
compromising. However, as will be seen, these are both unreasonable.
Firstly, the Boston Tea Party was a reasonable and understable response

Industrial Heritage And Its Impact On People s Behavior...
In the dictionary, heritage represents valuable things that have been passed down to descendants.
The behavior of heritage protection is a process of inheritance. Heritage protection not only
conserves precious historical places and objects, but also provides the authentic environments for
people to experience and research history. The valued and diverse heritage can bring a great
impact on people s behavior and feeling.
Industrial heritage, as an essential part of heritage, has become a booming industry in Western
countries. Industrial heritage is the materialized symbol of the development of industrialization in
each country. In 2003, Nizhny Tagil Charter for the Industrial Heritage adopted by The
International Committee for the Conservation of the Industrial Heritage. In this charter, the identity
of industrial heritage is confirmed. Industrial heritage not only includes industrial buildings and
machinery, but also contains social activities related to industry.
In China, industrial heritage development is just at the beginning stage. By the year of 2001, the
first industrial heritage was included in the List of National Key Cultural Relics Protection. The
protection of industrial heritage of coal seems to be a new concept. Coal resource is still a very
essential energy for Chinese economic development currently. However, in the future, it would be
replaced by clear and new energy. Industrial heritage of coal will be the representative of rapid
development of economy

Equilibrium Constant Lab Report
Introduction The purpose of this lab was to find an equilibrium constant. The equilibrium constant
was for a reaction between propan 1 ol and ethanoic, or acetic, acid that formed water and the ester,
propylethanoate. A titration reaction was used to be able to calculate the concentrations of each
solution at equilibrium, and ultimately the equilibrium constant.1 In a titration, a solution with a
known concentration is added to a solution of an unknown concentration that contains an indicator.
In this experiment, phenolphthalein is used which is colorless in acidic solutions and red in basic
solutions. At its equivalence point, it is pink. In an experiment, this point marks when the
concentrations of hydronium and hydroxide are equal, so the... Show more content on

This was done by subtracting the acid correction value from the final acid concentration:
[ethanoic acid] = [H+ total] [H+ correction]
[ethanoic acid] = 6.90 M 0.64 M
[ethanoic acid] = 6.26 M
Next, it is known that at equilibrium, the concentrations of ethanoic acid and propan 1 ol are equal.
Because of this, it was known that the concentration of propan 1 ol was also 6.26 M.
From the overall reaction, it was also known that as the reaction progressed, ethanoic acid was
converted into propylethanoate. Because of this, the concentration of propylethanoate at
equilibrium could be calculated:
[propylethanoate] = [initial ethanoic acid] [equilibrium ethanoic acid]
[propylethanoate] = 10.71 M 6.26 M
[propylethanoate] = 4.45 M
Also from the formula, it was seen that the concentrations of water and propylethanoate would be
equal. Because of this, the concentration of water was also 4.45 M at equilibrium.
Finally, to calculate the equilibrium constant, all of these values were plugged into the equilibrium
constant expression:
Keq = [propylethanoate][water] / [ethanoic

1974 Term Limits
The Term Limits and the 1974 Budget Reform are the two reflections for week five. There has
been a great debate concerning term limits. Term limits are considered to be the key point in
rebuilding the relationship between the government and U. S. citizens. American citizens has lost
faith in their government, because the citizens feel they are not represented, but the officials are
focused on benefiting themselves. However, term limits can remove good leaders out, who may
deserve to stay in office for a longer period of time. As the authors states that political bodies do
not experience they need when there are limits on how long they can be in office. It also may keep

The Fault In Our Stars Movie And Movie Analysis
Novels are always better than films because they have more details than a film. While reading a
novel the readers can imagine the scenes with details it gives. Meanwhile, in films, the reader
doesn t get the whole effect on how a character feels. The Fault in Our Stars novel is better than
the film itself. The Fault in Our Stars is a story of a young sixteen year old named Hazel Grace
who is a survivor of cancer. Grace meets a young boy named Augustus Waters at the cancer support
group. They fall in love. Grace feels like this boy understands her and have so much in common.
Augustus Waters and Hazel Grace go to Amsterdam to meet Peter Van Houten. He is a famous
author who wrote a novelcalled An Imperial Affliction, While Grace and Waters are at Amsterdam,
they fall in love. They continue on going to dates and being with each other the most they could.
Augustus knew he was going to die soon. He planned his funeral and dies days later. The Fault in
Our Stars novel is different from the film. For example, in the novel, the author talks about how
Hazel visits Isaac at the hospital often because his eye surgery, Hazel notices Augustus staring at her
during the support group meeting, and Hazel drives to Augustus house to pick him up before their
trip because she overhears him arguing with his mother

The area of my memory that I have focused on improving is my short term working memory.
Even with rehearsals of 30 seconds plus, information is often not retained for recall a short time

Short Summary Of Blink By Malcolm Gladwell
Summary of Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking Blink: The Power of Thinking
Without Thinking was written by Malcolm Gladwell. Gladwell s purpose in writing this book was
to explore the thought process of the mind. He presents examples of thin slicing and rapid cognition
throughout the book and compares each situation to each other. For example, the book begins with
a question of intuition at the J. Paul Getty Museum. An art dealer named Gianfranco Becchina
claimed to have a marble statue called a Kouros. There are only about two hundred of these statues
in existence but this one was in perfect condition and had an asking price of $10 million. The Getty
was cautious before buying the statue and continued a further investigation to determine if it was
authentic. Many credible individuals thoroughly made tests on the statue and determined that it
appeared genuine. Later after the sculpture was purchased, the first figures to present their ideas to
why the statue was a fraud were Federico Zeri and Evelyn Harrison. Although they did not perform
any tests, they knew that something seemed wrong with the Kouros. This assertion is one of the
main ideas of the book; the ability of our minds to rapidly make discernment without us even
realizing it. Most... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This term is defined simply as the capability to skim through a situation and make a clear
decision. An example of thin slicing used in the book was the research of marriages. In this
experiment a married couple would be videotaped while arguing over a simple topic such as
whether to get a dog or not. On the surface the conversation seems to be normal; however, in just
15 minutes researchers could come to a conclusion whether or not the marriage would last. It seems
almost impossible; nevertheless, by just studying facial expressions and body language the
situation was able to be thin sliced with 95%

Moral Responsibility In Susan Wolf s Analysis
In an attempt to explain moral responsibility, Susan Wolf puts forth a modified version of what
she calls the Deep Self View (DSV) first expounded on by Harry Frankfurt, Gary Watson and
Charles Taylor (Perry et al. 460 462). The key to her argument the condition of sanity; a deep self
must be sane in order to be considered morally responsible. However, I will argue that her attempt
fails for the following two reasons:
1.Wolf s definition of sanity is too vague and to be useful and relies on the collective view of lay
persons.
2.Wolf raises the bar of moral responsibility so high as to make it nearly impossible to reach and in
the process seems to defeat her own argument.
Wolf s attempt to make sense of DSV by creating her own definition of sanity (CITATION) does
not add clarity to DSV but instead creates more confusion. Her definition seems to rely too heavily
on the views of the general population for determining what is and is not sane (CITATION). What
is sane then ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
...the minimally sufficient ability cognitively and normatively to recognize and appreciate the
world for what it is (Perry et al. 465).
In other words, society at large is the yardstick for judging what is and is not to be considered sane
and acceptable behavior. While few would object to the role sanity plays in a person s moral
responsibility, Wolf s definition of the sane DSV is far too vague and subjective to be of any real
value.
So, if we accept Wolf s vague definition of the sane DSV and assume our view of the world is
the correct one, we may create even bigger problems. All too often the tyranny of the righteous
majority has violated the rights of the weak and savage minority. Therefore, it is my argument
that Wolf s definition of the sane DSV has the very real potential of creating even more Jo Jo s on
an even larger scale. Wolf acknowledges the difficulty of this objection and admits there are no
satisfactory answers (Perry et al.

It is defined as an Abnormality of mind . Abnormality of mind can arise from three areas, a
condition of arrested or retarded development of mind, any inherent causes or induced by
disease or injury . In this case it could be argued that Steve was suffering from paranoia in the he
instantly accuses Jane of having an affair or depression as he was placed on medication by his
doctor. These are both inherent causes, Anthony Martin. It could also be argued that the
defendant was provoked. Provocation exists at common law but is also contained under section
three of the Homicide Act 1957. To establish provocation the jury must be able to find the person
charged was provoked by things said or done or to a sudden loss of self control enough to make
a reasonable man do as he did. In this case the things said or done were Jane laughing and
taunting the defendant, also the fact that she said it would serve him right if she had an affair as
he was the most boring man she d ever known. This may be considered as cumulative
provocation which the jury may consider Humphreys 1995. The test for loss of self control
stems from Duffy, there was a sudden loss of self control as Steve immediately flew into a rage
and it was sudden as there was no cooling off period as in the case of Ibrams and Gregory. The
case of DPP v Camplin stated that the question is not whether a reasonable man in similar

Hmong In America
On the other hand, the U.S. Hmong community has experienced a drastically different history,
resulting in a socioeconomic status well below the Asian American averages. Hmong Americans
arrived in the United States as political refugees escaping communist forces in Laos, Vietnam, and
Thailand. During North Vietnams invasion of Laos, the U.S. CIA began recruiting and training
indigenous Hmong men to fight in General Pao s Secret Army. 60% of Hmong men in Laos
received financial assistance from the CIA in exchange for their service. After the takeover of pro
U.S. governments in South Vietnam and Laos, Hmong soldiers escaped to Thailand where they
were forced into refugee camps. The first wave of Hmong who arrived in the U.S. in 1975 were

Hmong report below average English proficiency, educational attainment, and household income.
Due to the model minority argument, Hmong and other struggling Asian American subgroups don t
receive substantial government assistance despite their alarming statistics. In their native
countries, Hmong lived in isolated, rural regions with little traditional schooling functioning
primarily as farmers. As a result of the Hmong coming to the U.S. as refugees as opposed to
immigrants, they didn t undergo the same self selection process which favors educated and
wealthy professionals. Because the majority of Hmong came to the U.S. for survival rather than
economic gain they were unprepared socially and economically for life in the U.S. In 2015, 60%
of the foreign born Hmong population reported their level of education as high school or less.
Additionally, only 40% of the foreign born Hmong population reported being proficient in English.
These statistics indicate that a large portion of Hmong refugees arrived in the U.S. with minimal
education and spoke little English making assimilation even more difficult. Hmong Americans
report a median household income of $48,000 while the U.S. average is $57,000. This statistic is
particularly troubling because although Hmong are only slightly behind the U.S. average 32% of
them live in multigenerational households and average greater than six individuals per household.
However, life is improving for Hmong Americans notably

The Amazing Platypus Research Paper
The Amazing Platypus The platypus has so many characteristics that even scientists sometimes
wonder how the platypus came about. An example includes how the platypus feeds itself if it has
a beak and claws! Platypuses also have venom, which is extremely strange, but to God, the
platypus is really part of his perfect creation. It seems to be that scientists even think that the
platypus may be a mutation. But it s not. It s part of the wonderful creation of God. This paper
will discuss these three things: how platypuses feed themselves, platypus poison, and the
characteristics of a platypus. Platypuses are odd creatures. They are not your ordinary beaver,
otter, or duck. This is because they seem to be a mixture of these three creatures.

The Effect of Supernatural Aspects on the Victorian Society Bram Stoker s Dracula, presents an
interesting perspective on death and illness in the Victorian period. This can be viewed as a

There are several flaws presented throughout the novel as the plot unfolds, which are: characters in
the novel dismiss the old traditional belief of the supernatural, the constant power struggle between

This was the era of the confronting New Woman , who strove to be emancipated both politically
and sexually, a concept which much of the society at the time found highly seditious and
unsettling. Not only is the idea of the New Woman despised by the society, but the concept of a
patriarchal society changing towards modernity poses as a threat to the Victorian men. For
example, Lucy is the first victim of Dracula in England who turns into a vampire and the men
are shocked at the appearance of what she has changed into: My own heart grew cold as ice, I
could hear the gasp of Arthur as we recognized the features of Lucy Westenra. Lucy Westenra, but

transformation because the former Lucy had characteristics of an ideal Victorian woman; which is
to be frivolous and naГЇve. However, now she is a woman who is carnal and unspiritual, which is
the perceived danger represented by the New Woman . This posed a threat to the upper middle
class heterosexual Protestant male in the society because the New Woman is thought to be equal to
men. In addition to the society moving towards modernism, due to the contagion of an ancient

The Announcement From A 1 Holdings Company
The announcement from A 1 Holdings Company for a hostile takeover made National Brands
management worried. The CEO of the National Brand, Bill Hall, the chief operating officer, Tom
Straw, the chief financial officer, Doris Faraday, and Stan Lindner from public relation all sat
down and discussed on this particular problem. So far, A 1 Holdings had already bought 5
percent of National Brand s outstanding shares and made offer for the rest at 7 1/8 over market,
which was $55 per share. For Bill Hall, the head of A 1 Holdings, Kelly O Brien was a bad guy
who might just want to take over the company and make his employees miserable. Tom Straw then
suggested the poison pill approach to defense the takeoverbut the idea was doubted by Stan
because it did not seem good for the company. Doris, after working with her numbers, proposed
her Pac Man defense idea. The Pac Man defense approach meant making counter offer to buy A 1
Holdings at $17 a share. She believed with National Brands strong financial position, it is highly
possible that this defense would work. Bill agreed with this idea and started to have his people
working on analyzing the details of this approach. The analysis started with A 1 Holdings ability to
buy all the rest 95 percent of National Brands. This 95 percent equaled 107,958,000 shares
outstanding, and at the offer of $55 per share, A 1 Holdings would need the equivalent of

Elvis Presley s Hound Dog
Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller wrote one of the greatest hits of all times.
This soulful beat, legend song Hound Dog, has had many covers as the years have past. The first
date recorded was August 13, 1952. Hound Dog, is classified in the classic blues in 1952 and
Willie Mae Thornton was the first to press this through the recording studio. This song hit the blues
genre of music in the early 1950 s, and later doubled into rhythm and blues before taking off onto
rock and roll with Elvis Presley. Fans raved as Elvis moved to the beat of Hound Dog and moved
soulfully to the rhythm as Jimi Hendrix pumped out the melody.

U.s. Gross Domestic Product
As the United States moved further away from the immediate economic boom in the final years
of the World War and the following several years, its economy showed a major decline. While
the country fought one of the biggest wars of all time, defense spending rose to levels as high as
37.8 percent of U.S. gross domestic product (Teslik). World War II was financed through debts and
an increase in taxes, and this negatively effected both consumption and investment. Some believed
that the war would improve the economy due to the increase in GDP during those years, but at the
end of the war, the economic growth fell back to the same trend it had been following during the
1930 s (Institute for Economics and Peace). During the 1960 s, Federal spending soared because
the government was attempting to fund new programs such as Medicare, Food Stamps, and various
plans to improve the education system (US Department of State). Then, with the war in Vietnam on
the horizon, military spending began increasing as well, and the government started spending a
surplus of money, since it had to fund both the war on poverty domestically, and the prepare the
nation for another war internationally. The government raised taxes throughout the 1950 s and into
the 1960 s with income tax rates reaching the high 80% (Top US Tax Rates Over Time, graph). The
government was unable to raise enough revenue through taxes, as they had just spent billions of
dollars on the Second World War, and inflation

Analysis Of Facing It By Yusef Komunyakaa
Facing It is a poem by Yusef Komunyakaa. It is a poem in which the writer uses imagery and
figurative language to express his feelings and his thoughts. He expresses his strong emotions
towards the Vietnam War because he was a veteran. During the poem, he reflects on his thoughts
from the war while he was at the Vietnam VeteranMemorial.
The speaker is visiting the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. In the beginning of the poem, he is trying
to hold back his tears. He is trying to remain strong and brave. When he is at the Vietnam Veteran
s Memorial, he comes across the name Andrew Johnson. As the readers of this poem, I have no
clue who Andrew Johnson is. Andrew Johnson could be someone that was close to him during the
war. At the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, you can see your reflection through the walls. The walls
at the memorial are how the narrator speaks about his reflections and what he can see through the
walls. The very last few lines of the poem are when he sees a reflection of a white vet in the
Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
In lines 1 2, my black face fades, hiding inside the black granite he is speaking about how his face
is literally black from the granite wall. He is also speaking how the kind of person we show to
the world. We do not always show who we truly are, people only show the side of their
personality that they want people to see. From these two lines, the narrator brings up the main
theme of this poem. In lines 3 5, the writer is expressing his feelings or he is at least trying not
to, he tries to hold back his emotions from the war. He wants to remain strong because he says, I
m stone and flesh He is not literally saying that he is stone but he is a person that has been
through a lot and even after everything he is still alive. In lines 6 9, imagery is the only thing
being used because he is only speaking about his reflection and how it relates to the granite
stone. In lines 10 13, he says, I am inside the Vietnam Veterans Memorial . From this line, part of
the narrator is still stuck at the war. He brings up light and how he wants it to make a difference.
Light is symbolized for how we represent ourselves to others and the kind of person we truly are. It
also plays a big part in the poem

The African American Civil Right Movement
The African American Civil right movement in the late 1950 s and throughout the 1960 s was a
powerful fight for equal opportunities to the basic rights and privileges outlined by the US
government. During this movement thousands of African American individuals and those who
believed in the power of the movement, battled against the piercing white supremacy through
various tactics including grass root movements. The grass root movements in the 60 s was
characterized by organizations of individuals fighting for equality on the behalf of the African
Americans, ultimately shaping American history. Such movements helped to raise awareness on a
political level, of the injustice all African Americans endured. Grassroots activist during the 60 s
were able to organize marches, rallies and protests in order to mobilize and strengthen the Civil
Rights Movement. Grass rooting activism during the Civil Rights Movement in the 60 s shaped
American History by aiding in the abolished laws restricting African American s freedom to vote,
the abolishment of segregation in school, and the passage of the Civil Rights act outlawing
discrimination.
As the Civil Rights Movement began to take root in the late 1950 s, many grassroots activist
worked towards the creation of many freedom schools in the South to encourage the continuation of
the fight for equality. As tension began to grow between those fighting in the Civil War Movement

The Manufacture Of Overcoming Adversity
Adversity
Adversity, as defined by the Cambridge English dictionary is, a difficult or unlucky situation or
event. ( Cambridge Academic Content Dictionary, 2017) Lou Holtz stated, People who succeed
are people who, when they get knocked down by some adversity, get up; whereas, people who
fail are people who, when they get knocked down, stay down. (Landis, 2013, p. 16) In Dr. Landis
work he also maintains a similar view. He lists four things you must do in order to overcome
adversity
1.You must be willing to riskfailure
2.You must passionately hate failure
3.Persistence is necessity, as is the willingness to acknowledge defeat and to move on
4.A measure of your potential to succeed is how you handle adversity
I m of a different belief however. Adversity is not that of black and white. Adversity, as life, is
filled with many greys. In my opinion there are two key factures that play into overcoming
adversity. First is preparation, and the means to confront adversity being ready for the possibility
of failure. Second is the mindset, you can t overcome adversity if you ve already dismissed the
possibility that you might. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Theme Of Pride In House Of Mirth
It can be duly noted that, regardless of the time period, the history of American lifestyles follow
similar patterns. One can easily identify major stepping pinnacles through the literature published at
that time. Throughout the novels House of Mirth, A Mercy and the play Death of a Salesman, the
thematic realms of Freedom and Confinement, Pride, Respect and Reputation are often explored
and we can identify that the lives of these very different set of New Yorkers experience great
hardships. First, we will explore the theme of Pride within the novelHouse of Mirth. Pride is not a

Gryce s assessment of this group, there are boundaries within it which should not be crossed,
limiting the members of the society in House of Mirth to a sense of restriction. The self imposed
rules prevent people from doing as they please or experiencing the tribulations that life throws at
them. Examples of this is that women marry solely for financial purposes, women should not
befriend married men or even smoke cigarettes. The people are expected to play their role in this
high end society and any deviance from this is condemned. The following quote examines Lily s
appearance towards everyone and how she was expected to act.: To Selden s exasperated
observation she was only too completely alive to them. She was perfect to every one:
subservient to Bertha s anxious predominance, good naturedly watchful of Dorset s moods,
brightly companionable to Silverton and Dacey. (Wharton, 2.1.43) The freedom in this society
is minimal, even to those who are financially adept. Selden states that his version of success is
freedom. Despite that he continues to participate in the menial activities of this society.
Previously, we noted that Selden is less restricted in this society and his male gender allows his
reputation to stand strong. This is also the case for his sense of freedom. He can feel free only
because he is a male and women are constantly confined because they are female. Similarly, Bertha
Dorset is completely aware of her downfall if her

Merck, The FDA, And The Vioexx Recall
The Central Problem
In the Merck, the FDA, and the Vioxx Recall case study, the question as to whether or not Merck
conducted itself in a socially responsible and ethical manner with regard to Vioxx is the central
problem we will examine in this case. Many argue that the sole problem lies within the
pharmaceutical company Merck and Co., Inc., and while that may in fact be the case, other parties
such as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) can be held responsible as well. Merck a research

Important facts of the case
If you search the web regarding Merck, the FDA, and the Vioxx Recall you ll find a number of
primary and secondary sources with central facts regarding the Vioxx case. While there are a
number of variables to consider, I focused on the factual data that provided integral facts about
this case. In the early 90s congress passed the Prescription Drug User Fee Act (PDUFA) that
requires pharmaceutical companies to pay the FDA to review proposed medicines. This came as
a result of pressure to get drugs into the market quickly as consumers were fearful that they were
not receiving medicines quickly. This act allows the FDA to provide reviews that approve or
disapprove various drugs companies seek to enter into the market; yet the process was found that
two thirds of the survey lacked confidence that adequately monitors the safety of prescriptions once
they are on the market (Lawrence, 483). Because there was pressure to get drugs into the market
the FDA shortened the approval time which caused the approval percentage to increase from 1.56
percent to 5.35 percent in 2001. While at the same

The Delta is the lifeblood of California s water supply system, but when sea levels rise more and
more of the levee system that blockades the salt and fresh water erodes, it leads to what is
known as seawater intrusion. More simply, the contamination of freshwater by its salty
counterpart. This process happens at varying rates, disrupting the water supply at a snail s pace

effects on snowpack levels is far more measurable, where warming temperatures lead to higher

My Last Year In High School
My last year in high school. My last regional track meet. My last throw. Everything I had been
working towards for the last four years came down to this very moment. On a scorching hot spring
day, weary and patient athletes from all across Oklahoma gathered in Cordell around a concrete
ring; watching intently as the furthest discus thrower in the region arrived at his final throw. All
attempts before this had landed outside the throwing boundaries, so they did not count. This
increased the pressure tenfold as I grabbed the metal disc that was to be my last chance at State. I
slowly stepped into the ring, took a deep breath, and shifted my weight onto the balls of my feet to
prepare for the final toss. In this one moment, all of my experiences that brought me to this place
rushed forward in my mind.

sport and we have a grill to cook food on. You can t turn down free food can you? This, combined
with the opportunity to miss a lot of school, convinced me to sign up for a sport I had never even

sprints, and not very much discus. When we finally traveled out to the field, my new coach

Analysis Of Four-Bar Mechanion
Introduction
The four bar linkage mechanism has been introduced in the early 1970 s. Mechanical substitutes
(prosthesis) for human lower limbs have advanced from small tree trunks shaped into peg legs in
ancient times to today s sophisticated prosthesis with controlled motion. Nowadays, the linkage is
implemented in persons with above knee and through knee amputations.
The goal of this project is to gather information based on the four bar mechanism found in a
prosthetic leg with an artificial knee joint, and to use that knowledge to determine the forces and
movements that are present in the mechanism. Also, we are to determine how a joint clearance and
link flexibility can affect the overall performance of the mechanism. We plan on... Show more

The Four bar knee linkage can still be improved, such as creating types of linkages that allow safe
stance phase, have low energy consumption and be light as possible. With all of these
disadvantages in mind, people who make prosthetics should be able to analyze and define the
unique qualities of the system in order to confidently create custom four bar knees for specific
customers.
A four bar knee mechanism with two joints having clearance can have a dynamic response. One
of the important factors that influence the dynamic stability and the performance of mechanisms
is the joint clearance. The clearances always exist in the kinematic joints and they are known to
be the sources for impact forces. These forces are the source of unwanted vibration that can cause
a decrease in the reliability and life of the mechanism. The dynamic behavior of a four bar
mechanism with a clearance at any one of its connections can be described using a quasi static
model. The results showed that, in the presence of clearance, the mechanism responses were greatly
influenced, and the coupler flexibility had a role of suspension for the mechanism. Kinematic
analysis of the mechanism includes the determination of displacements, velocities and accelerations
of the mass centers of moving links. As a practical implication, the proposed optimized values of
the design variables lead to a

Cheesemen Case
(Cheeseman 2013). In the case of United States v. Belmont this was a Russian business that
deposited significant amount of funds in Belmont which in turn was a private Banker, during the
early 1900 s. During this time the Russian Government would municipalized the business and
appropriated all its assets were ever they were at. Later on the mid 30 s the Russia and the United
Stateswould eventually come to a settlement and a finally settle the claim. The Soviet Union would
go on to agree, that they would not to take any steps to impose claims against American citizens to
include Belmont. (Cheeseman 2013).

stop selling napalm propellant; unless they could obtain assurances that it would not be used to

the proposal included in the company s proxy materials for a vote at the shareholder annual
meeting. The Dow Management refused to add Medical Committee for Human Right s proposal to
the proxy materials and the results was MCHR sued. (Cheeseman 2013). In my opinion Dow wins
because Dow wasn t making the napalm in the course of normal business operations. Although Dow
had no reasonable business intention to manufacture napalm to harm anyone, they were only doing
it because of the special politics of the managements. Therefore it wasn t the kind of regular
business decision that merited

What Is The Most Surprising Use Of Cadavers
In the book Stiff, cadavers are used in different areas and kinds of research. As I read, I was
surprised to see that there were so many unique ways that cadavers are used. The most surprising
thing that I read was that cadavers were used as art. This book was not only interesting, but
enlightening as well. It is unbelievable how useful cadavers have been in helping the living in so
many different ways. After reading Stiff, it was surprising to discover that there are so many
different ways that cadavers can be used. For example, cadavers are used to see the different stages
of decomposition, as test dummies, as compost, and as art. Until I read this book, I thought that
you were simply buried or cremated when you die. Further, I... Show more content on

I was surprised because I never thought that cadavers were used for anything other than being
buried, cremated, or for medicine. The most surprising thing that I read was that cadavers were
used as art. This surprised me the most because I did not think that cadavers being put in poses
on display could be popular or beneficial to people. Seeing all of the different ways that cadavers
are used was both interesting and thought provoking. Simply, the use of cadavers allows one to
choose a more rewarding option that will allow him/her to serve and benefit fellow humans not
only in life but death as well. After reading the book, I have reconsidered the options available to

The Intellectual Roots Of Modern Day Environmentalism
Many people today do not understand or appreciate the lasting effects that the environmental
movement of the 1960s brought to our world. The things that most people immediately associate
with the 1960s usually include the Civil Rights movement, Vietnam, the space race, student protests
and the hippie generation, underscoring the fact that the environmental movement is often put
aside relative these seemingly more iconic symbols of this decade. The 1960s certainly did not
mark the first time that efforts were made in the United States to change attitudes, policies, and
views regarding the environment. Many trace the intellectual roots of modern day environmentalism
all the way back to the 19th century American writers and philosophers Ralph Waldo Emerson
and Henry David Thoreau, most notably the latter s 1854 work, Walden. President Theodore
Roosevelt set aside more public land for national parks than all of his predecessors combined.
His policies and views about conservation remained dominate for decades (nps.org). The efforts
made by these figures in the mid 1800s through the early part of the 20th century were crucial for
paving the way for what would come in later years. The main reason for such progress in the
environmental movement in the 1960s is because of influential leaders, the prominent role of
media, and a generation of people who were not afraid to initiate change.
Influential figures in the 1960s were the first ones to bring to light the urgency of the

Gospel Of Thomas Research Paper
In the Gospel of Thomas verse 55 and John 19:25 27, they both tell a contrasting notion of Jesus
and family. Thomas tells of hardship of being able to hate one s own family members to be able to
be worthy of Jesus. John tells of a different story of Jesus having his mother and beloved disciple be
united as a family. Both stories provide an idea on how Jesusbelieved in how to go about following
him and following their families. In the Gospelof Thomas, the notion of giving up what we love
the most, our family, is a difficult task. It is a tough task Jesus assigned to his followers. By
being able to do so, they may be free, as Jesus is. The role of family has requirements to be made.

This is contrast to Thomas verse 55, as Jesus family is still with him and is apart of his circle.
Jesus does not refute the notion of the beloved disciple telling Mary this is your son. It would
seem Jesus accepts her as his mother. Even if Jesus did not fully acknowledged his mother, there
is some sense in how he did not cut her off completely. This is contrasting to Matthew 12:46 50,
as well, since Jesus said his followers were his mothers and brothers. A reason for not disregarding
her as his mother is maybe Jesus knew he was about to die, and had a change of

individuals are concerned about when a loved one passes.Reports from other countries of a rise in
this type of litigation has many scared they may find themselves in middle of a costly and lengthy
dispute over a loved one s assets, but this isn t the case. Individuals concerned about preparing their
estate or those who are facing this type of battle need to speak to an attorney to assist in the process

Sadly, this isn t the case, as every estate goes through the process, as it must be determined who
gets his or her assets. Debts must be paid, assets distributed and the final wishes of the deceased
respected, when possible. There are laws governing the process, and they tend to be complex.
Probate1 works with individuals to ensure the process runs smoothly. Our firm works to get the
heirs the maximum amount allowed by law, while fulfilling any obligations. The probate lawyer
may be called in at any time, to create the will, establish a trust or develop documents for a person
s medical power of attorney, among other things. In addition, the lawyer can handle the filing of the
estate with the court, Jackson goes on to say.
Estate planning addresses the distribution of assets prior to a person s death. With the estate
plan, the court understands the deceased s final wishes and how he or she wishes their assets to
be shared. For some, the process is simple, as the assets are jointly owned or aren t of high value.
Others, however, have estates that require special consideration. This is true when there are
children involved or the deceased was a partner in one or more

The Effective Managing Of Data
The era of digitalization considered the data as an important information asset that is required to be
safeguarded and stored in an effective manner to maintain the confidentiality, integrity and
availability of the information (Conklin, White, Williams, Davis Cothren, 2012). The effective
managing of data helps in accessing the accurate information at right time for organizational
decision making purposes to achieve the long term business goals (Conklin et al., 2012). New
innovations in the field of technology are used for carrying out research that resulted in entirely
new categories of data in boundlessly growing amounts (Strasser, 2014). Research projects includes

It is also needed to process the data effectively, make it easy access to primary data, to ensure
accuracy of information and to verify the data is adhere to the standards (Fisheries and Aquaculture
Department, n.d.). Data management resulted in saving time and resources in long term (Boston
University, n.d.).
Data managers are responsible for carrying out the data management. They could range from
researchers, graduate students, research assistants, information technology experts and research
librarians. These data managers are accountable for the dataset throughout its life cycle to guarantee
its functionality and proficiency for reusing the information during and after a given research
project is finished (Texas A M University, 2015).
History and evolution of data management The data management have been evolved over the
years in well defined phases. These phases are shown in figure 1. Figure 1. The evolution of data
management adopted from Gray, 1996. As shown in figure 1, between 4000BC to 1900, the

In his footsteps I place my ministry in the service of reconciliation and harmony between
peoples. Additionally, I recall Saint Benedict of Nursia, copatron of Europe, whose life evokes
the Christian roots of Europe. I ask him to help us all to hold firm to the centrality of Christ in
our Christian life: May Christ always take first place in our thoughts and actions. Benedict
celebrated his first canonizations on October 23rd 2005 in St. Peter s square. Pope Benedict
wrote three encyclicals; Deus Caritas Est, Spe Salvi, and Caritas in Veritate. In Benedict s first
encyclical, Deus Caritas Est, he said that human being created in the image of God who is love,
is able to practice love. His first encyclical contains about 16,000 words in 42 paragraphs. His
second encyclical titled, Spe Salvi, is about the virtue of hope. His third and final encyclical,
Caritas in Veritate, continued the Church s teachings on social justice. Benedict travelled a lot
during his first three years as pope. He traveled to Italy, Germany, Poland, Spain, Turkey, and
Muslim. In 2007, he visited Brazil to address the Bishops Conference and canonize Friar Antonio
Galvao. April 2008, his first visit to the United Sates since becoming pope took place. He arrived

  • 2. The Problem Of Traffic Lights The idea for traffic lights began in the mid 1800s when a system was essential to sustain the amassed flow of horse drawn traffic flow. By 1868, a signal was put in by the intersection of George St and Bridge St, which is close to the Parliament. The installment provided pedestrians a safe crossing, and an answer to officials that need to sustain traffic. The semaphore involves a signal of a tall post with movable arm. When the arm is aligned sideways, it mean stop. After dark, a gas lamp was lit at the top. The green lenses means to go, and red means stop. Originally, the signal is controlled by hand, and the officers decided when the signal to be changed according to traffic flow. They would also whistle to remind drivers, when the signal will change. However, this method turned out to be hazardous. In 1869, a leak in one of the gas lines led to a traffic signal explosion. The incident severely wounding the policeman operating it, and led to the semaphore project to be terminated in London. In America, the semaphore were be rolled out to public because there were more motorists travelling on the road. However, many problems arose due to officers finding it to be difficult to sustain the traffic congestion. Some cities started to install traffic towers, which allowed officers to have a clearer view to monitor the traffic in an elevated platform. In the early 1900s, the automobiles just gain popularity throughout the world and traffic becomes busier results. Car were ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Asian Cultural Identity Growing up as an Asian American, I often struggle to identify my own cultural identity. Being the first generation of both my mother and father s side of the family, I more than often get confused between American and Asian culture when applying them to society or at home. While being raised at home, I am largely influenced by culture and traditions from Asian parents and relatives. However, when I go to school or someplace else, I am heavily judged for practicing part of my Asian culture because it is entirely different than western or American. With that being noted, I began to learn and adapt to the western culture in hopes of fitting with society as well of trying to keep my Asian culture intact. As can be seen, this situation I dealt with is the same problem the whole Asian Americancommunity faces. Mainly focusing on younger generations like me for example, the Asian American community struggles to adapt to the western culture because they were raised with an Asian influence. Wishing to fit in society and be part of the social norms, the Asian Americans community faces issues that identify their cultural identity. A child growing up in a certain environment is influenced on how he or she takes action in a society. Such as Asian American children being exposed to two kinds of cultures, one that is Asian and the other American. Asian American children being born in the United Statesare heavily influenced by home life and society. Branding them with stereotypes and other ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Pros And Cons Of Single Parents I was raised in a single parent household for much of my life. I can say that children who are raised in a single family home have been looked at as being different for many years. Being raised by only one parent seems hard or even impossible to many, yet over time it has become more of the norm. Throughout society today, many children have grown up to become mentally stable and successful whether they had one or two parents to help navigate them on the road of life. Where the problem lies is in the difference of children raised by single parents versus children raised by both a mother and a father. This topic has become a very thought provoking argument with various questions being asked such as; Does a child need both parents? Should the government provide help or services for single parents? What role do step parents and step siblings play? People need to understand that to properly raise a child, they should not focus on the structure of the family, but should be focused on the values and processes that are taught while their children grow and mature. Children of a single parent household can continually grow and excel just as well as children with a two parent household. Some people think that children can only grow to their full potential by being raised by both a mother and a father. For one parent to raise a child by themselves, it can be difficult for several reasons. A single parent must work full time or with today s job market, work numerous part time jobs ... • 6. Butterfly Circus Essay Recently I watched the short film Butterfly Circus by Joshua Weigel and I was very pleased. Prior to watching the movie, only having read the title I immediately thought this was going to be a cartoon for a young child. As I watched the first scene I shortly realized this was not the case. Weigel introduces a familiar face Nick Vujicic, The Limbless man, a main character in this short film. The film is about the famous showman going to a small circus sideshowand finding the magnificent limbless man in a time of anguish while being bullied by the audience and other members of the freak show. After the limbless man s encounter with the showman he is forced to gain hope against anything negative he has ever believed. This movie opens with the setting in the depression era. A fleet of old cars traveling down a dirt road passing families as they watch the car caravan with sorrowful eyes. Inside the fleet of old cars is the company of the renowned Butterfly Circus on their way to the next town to lift the spirits of their audiences. As they pass a sign for a carnival sideshow, the little boy asks the driver if they can go. The driver answers reluctantly so the little boy ask Mr. Mendez, the famous showman, and he says, why not . Among the carousel, the fortune teller, and the games they find the show that everyone has come to see. There sits a small tent that is known as the best freak show in town . • 8. How Did Ancient Africa Dbq Ancient Africa held many treasures like gold and salt that could be used to build a large empire. A few men did exactly that. African empires were wealthy and great before men from Europe came onto the scene. Before the arrival of the Europeans, African civilizations from 300 to 1400 CE were wealthy, flourished in trade, and encouraged things like education, the arts, and security. Civilizations in Africa like Mali, Ghana, and Kilwa all exhibited great wealth enjoyed by many in the empire. In document 2, Ghana s gold and salt trade are shown to have made the kingdom very rich and powerful. The king s court had very luxurious items and this showcased their wealth, one of the reasons the Europeans came to Africa in the first place. Mansa Musa, the ruler of Mali, also had riches, and he handed them out while traveling through Cairo to Mecca (doc 4). Finally, the city state of Kilwa was considered one of the most beautiful places in the world by Ibn Battuta (doc 8). In 1906, Andrewes and Hoarder isolated this same bacterium from a patient suffering from endocarditis and they also discovered a relationship with urinary tract infections. • 12. Causes Of The Boston Tea Party On December 16, 1773, a group of overtaxed, oppressed, and overlooked colonists dumped 342 boxes of tea from Britain into the cold, dark depths of the Boston Harbor. The British Parliament had been gradually raising the colonists taxes, taxing anything that could possibly be taxed, continually pushing the colonists to the edge of rebellion. The TeaAct was passed on May 10, 1773, granting the British East India Trading Company a government sanctioned monopoly on tea, forcing the colonists to buy tea from Britain alone. Although it didn t create any additional taxes, the colonists were so infuriated at Parliament for recent similar impositions that the Tea Act of 1773 was the grain of rice that tipped the scale for the colonists, causing them to ruin around ВЈ18,000 worth of tea. Despite destroying so much property, the Mohawks took care not to harm an members of the crew (Schweikart and Allen, 75). The Boston Tea Partywas the correct response to the Tea Act on top of others for three reasons; it revealed the colonists oppression, it encouraged the colonists independence, and it set a great example for revolutions in the future. However, there is still some debate as to whether the Boston Tea Party was a reasonable response to the oppressive acts of the British Parliament. For example, it can be argued that the colonists could ve compromising. However, as will be seen, these are both unreasonable. • 13. Industrial Heritage And Its Impact On People s Behavior... In the dictionary, heritage represents valuable things that have been passed down to descendants. The behavior of heritage protection is a process of inheritance. Heritage protection not only conserves precious historical places and objects, but also provides the authentic environments for people to experience and research history. The valued and diverse heritage can bring a great impact on people s behavior and feeling. Industrial heritage, as an essential part of heritage, has become a booming industry in Western countries. Industrial heritage is the materialized symbol of the development of industrialization in each country. In 2003, Nizhny Tagil Charter for the Industrial Heritage adopted by The International Committee for the Conservation of the Industrial Heritage. In this charter, the identity of industrial heritage is confirmed. Industrial heritage not only includes industrial buildings and machinery, but also contains social activities related to industry. In China, industrial heritage development is just at the beginning stage. By the year of 2001, the first industrial heritage was included in the List of National Key Cultural Relics Protection. • 14. Equilibrium Constant Lab Report Introduction The purpose of this lab was to find an equilibrium constant. The equilibrium constant was for a reaction between propan 1 ol and ethanoic, or acetic, acid that formed water and the ester, propylethanoate. A titration reaction was used to be able to calculate the concentrations of each solution at equilibrium, and ultimately the equilibrium constant.1 In a titration, a solution with a known concentration is added to a solution of an unknown concentration that contains an indicator. In this experiment, phenolphthalein is used which is colorless in acidic solutions and red in basic solutions. At its equivalence point, it is pink. In an experiment, this point marks when the concentrations of hydronium and hydroxide are equal, so the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This was done by subtracting the acid correction value from the final acid concentration: [ethanoic acid] = [H+ total] [H+ correction] [ethanoic acid] = 6.90 M 0.64 M [ethanoic acid] = 6.26 M Next, it is known that at equilibrium, the concentrations of ethanoic acid and propan 1 ol are equal. Because of this, it was known that the concentration of propan 1 ol was also 6.26 M. From the overall reaction, it was also known that as the reaction progressed, ethanoic acid was converted into propylethanoate. Because of this, the concentration of propylethanoate at equilibrium could be calculated: [propylethanoate] = [initial ethanoic acid] [equilibrium ethanoic acid] [propylethanoate] = 10.71 M 6.26 M [propylethanoate] = 4.45 M Also from the formula, it was seen that the concentrations of water and propylethanoate would be equal. Because of this, the concentration of water was also 4.45 M at equilibrium. Finally, to calculate the equilibrium constant, all of these values were plugged into the equilibrium constant expression: Keq = [propylethanoate][water] / [ethanoic ... • 16. The Fault In Our Stars Movie And Movie Analysis Novels are always better than films because they have more details than a film. While reading a novel the readers can imagine the scenes with details it gives. Meanwhile, in films, the reader doesn t get the whole effect on how a character feels. The Fault in Our Stars novel is better than the film itself. The Fault in Our Stars is a story of a young sixteen year old named Hazel Grace who is a survivor of cancer. Grace meets a young boy named Augustus Waters at the cancer support group. They fall in love. Grace feels like this boy understands her and have so much in common. Augustus Waters and Hazel Grace go to Amsterdam to meet Peter Van Houten. He is a famous author who wrote a novelcalled An Imperial Affliction, While Grace and Waters are at Amsterdam, they fall in love. They continue on going to dates and being with each other the most they could. Augustus knew he was going to die soon. He planned his funeral and dies days later. The Fault in Our Stars novel is different from the film. For example, in the novel, the author talks about how Hazel visits Isaac at the hospital often because his eye surgery, Hazel notices Augustus staring at her during the support group meeting, and Hazel drives to Augustus house to pick him up before their trip because she overhears him arguing with his mother The book The Fault in Our Stars is better than the movie because in the novel the author says Hazel does visit Isaac at the Hospital, Hazel notices Augustus staring at her during ... • 18. Short Summary Of Blink By Malcolm Gladwell Summary of Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking was written by Malcolm Gladwell. Gladwell s purpose in writing this book was to explore the thought process of the mind. He presents examples of thin slicing and rapid cognition throughout the book and compares each situation to each other. For example, the book begins with a question of intuition at the J. Paul Getty Museum. An art dealer named Gianfranco Becchina claimed to have a marble statue called a Kouros. There are only about two hundred of these statues in existence but this one was in perfect condition and had an asking price of $10 million. The Getty was cautious before buying the statue and continued a further investigation to determine if it was authentic. Many credible individuals thoroughly made tests on the statue and determined that it appeared genuine. Later after the sculpture was purchased, the first figures to present their ideas to why the statue was a fraud were Federico Zeri and Evelyn Harrison. Although they did not perform any tests, they knew that something seemed wrong with the Kouros. This assertion is one of the main ideas of the book; the ability of our minds to rapidly make discernment without us even realizing it. Most... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 21. Moral Responsibility In Susan Wolf s Analysis In an attempt to explain moral responsibility, Susan Wolf puts forth a modified version of what she calls the Deep Self View (DSV) first expounded on by Harry Frankfurt, Gary Watson and Charles Taylor (Perry et al. 460 462). The key to her argument the condition of sanity; a deep self must be sane in order to be considered morally responsible. However, I will argue that her attempt fails for the following two reasons: 1.Wolf s definition of sanity is too vague and to be useful and relies on the collective view of lay persons. 2.Wolf raises the bar of moral responsibility so high as to make it nearly impossible to reach and in the process seems to defeat her own argument. Wolf s attempt to make sense of DSV by creating her own definition of sanity (CITATION) does not add clarity to DSV but instead creates more confusion. Her definition seems to rely too heavily on the views of the general population for determining what is and is not sane (CITATION). What is sane then ... In other words, society at large is the yardstick for judging what is and is not to be considered sane and acceptable behavior. While few would object to the role sanity plays in a person s moral responsibility, Wolf s definition of the sane DSV is far too vague and subjective to be of any real value. So, if we accept Wolf s vague definition of the sane DSV and assume our view of the world is the correct one, we may create even bigger problems. All too often the tyranny of the righteous majority has violated the rights of the weak and savage minority. Therefore, it is my argument that Wolf s definition of the sane DSV has the very real potential of creating even more Jo Jo s on an even larger scale. The CEO of the National Brand, Bill Hall, the chief operating officer, Tom Straw, the chief financial officer, Doris Faraday, and Stan Lindner from public relation all sat down and discussed on this particular problem. So far, A 1 Holdings had already bought 5 percent of National Brand s outstanding shares and made offer for the rest at 7 1/8 over market, which was $55 per share. For Bill Hall, the head of A 1 Holdings, Kelly O Brien was a bad guy who might just want to take over the company and make his employees miserable. During the poem, he reflects on his thoughts from the war while he was at the Vietnam VeteranMemorial. The speaker is visiting the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. The very last few lines of the poem are when he sees a reflection of a white vet in the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. In lines 1 2, my black face fades, hiding inside the black granite he is speaking about how his face is literally black from the granite wall. He is also speaking how the kind of person we show to the world. We do not always show who we truly are, people only show the side of their personality that they want people to see. From these two lines, the narrator brings up the main theme of this poem. In lines 3 5, the writer is expressing his feelings or he is at least trying not to, he tries to hold back his emotions from the war. He wants to remain strong because he says, I m stone and flesh He is not literally saying that he is stone but he is a person that has been through a lot and even after everything he is still alive. In lines 6 9, imagery is the only thing being used because he is only speaking about his reflection and how it relates to the granite stone. In lines 10 13, he says, I am inside the Vietnam Veterans Memorial . From this line, part of the narrator is still stuck at the war. He brings up light and how he wants it to make a difference. Inversely, the average precipitations effects on the water supply are less measurable, due to the inability to correctly asses the amount of total runoff derived from precipitations role as the catalyst of the melting process. Measurements of this kind must be more than just an estimate, Hanak and Lund cite that It is likely to be decades before we know if and by how much precipitation and runoff volumes are changing (pg 20). But precipitations effects on snowpack volume must remain relevant, the effects of reduced runoff due to decreased precipitation appear to be much more important than ... • 43. My Last Year In High School My last year in high school. My last regional track meet. My last throw. Everything I had been working towards for the last four years came down to this very moment. On a scorching hot spring day, weary and patient athletes from all across Oklahoma gathered in Cordell around a concrete ring; watching intently as the furthest discus thrower in the region arrived at his final throw. All attempts before this had landed outside the throwing boundaries, so they did not count. This increased the pressure tenfold as I grabbed the metal disc that was to be my last chance at State. I slowly stepped into the ring, took a deep breath, and shifted my weight onto the balls of my feet to prepare for the final toss. In this one moment, all of my experiences that brought me to this place rushed forward in my mind. ***
In my freshman year, I was a big basketball player, but I often found myself bored in the spring time due to my lack of participation in school activities. My friend, Grant, came up to me in the hall one day. Hey, Cade! You should come throw discus with me in Track. It s a pretty fun sport and we have a grill to cook food on. You can t turn down free food can you? This, combined with the opportunity to miss a lot of school, convinced me to sign up for a sport I had never even heard of. The first few months of the sport were hard, mostly consisting of nonstop weight lifting, sprints, and not very much discus. When we finally traveled out to the field, my new coach ... • 44. Analysis Of Four-Bar Mechanion Introduction The four bar linkage mechanism has been introduced in the early 1970 s. Mechanical substitutes (prosthesis) for human lower limbs have advanced from small tree trunks shaped into peg legs in ancient times to today s sophisticated prosthesis with controlled motion. Nowadays, the linkage is implemented in persons with above knee and through knee amputations. The goal of this project is to gather information based on the four bar mechanism found in a prosthetic leg with an artificial knee joint, and to use that knowledge to determine the forces and movements that are present in the mechanism. Also, we are to determine how a joint clearance and link flexibility can affect the overall performance of the mechanism. We plan on... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Four bar knee linkage can still be improved, such as creating types of linkages that allow safe stance phase, have low energy consumption and be light as possible. With all of these disadvantages in mind, people who make prosthetics should be able to analyze and define the unique qualities of the system in order to confidently create custom four bar knees for specific customers. A four bar knee mechanism with two joints having clearance can have a dynamic response. One of the important factors that influence the dynamic stability and the performance of mechanisms is the joint clearance. The clearances always exist in the kinematic joints and they are known to be the sources for impact forces. These forces are the source of unwanted vibration that can cause a decrease in the reliability and life of the mechanism. The dynamic behavior of a four bar mechanism with a clearance at any one of its connections can be described using a quasi static model. The results showed that, in the presence of clearance, the mechanism responses were greatly influenced, and the coupler flexibility had a role of suspension for the mechanism. Kinematic analysis of the mechanism includes the determination of displacements, velocities and accelerations of the mass centers of moving links. As a practical implication, the proposed optimized values of the design variables lead to a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 47. The Intellectual Roots Of Modern Day Environmentalism Many people today do not understand or appreciate the lasting effects that the environmental movement of the 1960s brought to our world. The things that most people immediately associate with the 1960s usually include the Civil Rights movement, Vietnam, the space race, student protests and the hippie generation, underscoring the fact that the environmental movement is often put aside relative these seemingly more iconic symbols of this decade. The 1960s certainly did not mark the first time that efforts were made in the United States to change attitudes, policies, and views regarding the environment. Many trace the intellectual roots of modern day environmentalism all the way back to the 19th century American writers and philosophers Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau, most notably the latter s 1854 work, Walden. President Theodore Roosevelt set aside more public land for national parks than all of his predecessors combined. His policies and views about conservation remained dominate for decades (nps.org). The efforts made by these figures in the mid 1800s through the early part of the 20th century were crucial for paving the way for what would come in later years. The main reason for such progress in the environmental movement in the 1960s is because of influential leaders, the prominent role of media, and a generation of people who were not afraid to initiate change.
