MH Across Languages
and Cultures
If English is not your first language, does your
language have words for mental health, mental
illness and mental wellness?
Do these concepts exist in your home culture?
● I don't think there's a specific term in my native
language, Urdu. It's words that are very stigmatizing
and negatively connotated.
● English Only

Some movies and tv shows
that show mental illness…
● 13 reasons why
● Goodwill Hunting
● Ben's home
● Butterfly effect
● cyperbullying
● bedlam documentary
● Monk
● Empire (not doing a great job but they are)
● Revenge (TV series)
● a beautiful mind
● Gaslight
● Inside Out

What makes it difficult
to reach out for help?
● shame
● the stigma about
help-seeking itself
● feeling shame
● Scared to be judged
● Might feel like a burden
● embarrassed
● doubtful/confusion
● judgements
● fear
● “Only crazy people need help”
● army
● Taught not to talk about it.
Ignore feelings
● It’s not real
● Thinking "it's no big deal"
● Fear of further judgment
● barriers to help-seeking i.e.
culture, family, self doubt
● get over it
● Suck it up
● limited access/affordability to
mental health care
● many reasons that make it
difficult to ask for help: when
the customized help needed
isn't offered, when the solutions
given do not solve problems or
make problems worse

What did you think? What did you feel?
● sad
● was tearful and feeling
heartbroken
● Regret
● shaken
● powerful that the boy seeing
violence went out and
committed violence himself
● futility
● "prose written on boy" implies
another form of
communication
● troubled
● Broken
● it mad me sad thinking that
people don't feel they can get
out of the situation
● I feel sad because dad doesn't
understand the depth of negative
impact he has on his son
● bullying aspects are personally
relatable for me when I was
younger -- encourages me to
advocate for mental health even
more often and consider
intersectional aspects.
● The Dad also has insecurities
● bullies are bullies for a reason
● camera angles from where the
boy's horns were viewed seem
"strategically" placed
● It shows me some do not know
how to show how they feel or how
to communicate

What are some practices that
help support your wellness?
● Wellness is so very
individualized....finding what works
for you personally. Taking regular
inventory of where you're at
emotionally/physically.
● When I'm having a hard time
mentally, expressing it to my child
so he feels open about his own
feelings and mental health.
● collecting my thoughts and then
getting the straight to talk to my
friends
● support groups
● Therapy
● a single or double session for
personal work
● reaching in by checking in with
myself, reaching out for help
whenever I need
● Contact with my mental health
peers
● talking to family and friends
● Reaching out for help and talk
with peers or family
● having done my own therapy
work and "tune ups" on
occasion. Also, practice what I
teach in therapy.
● Recovery group
● having allies, my faith, family,
and friends
