MH ACROSS CULTURES
● Undesirable, it’s hush hush
● Something believed to be limited to the poor or low economic groups
● A stigma/hidden, a no-talk subject
● “Pray it away”
● Within my own culture people believe counseling is for the weak
● It was never acknowledged within my family but through self development i am learning that we all
suffer; recover out loud :)
● People have no idea what to say/how to help
● Does not need to be addressed or treated
● The elephant under the rug
● In the US and the Midwest in particular it seems taboo to talk about anything that's unhappy for too long
● A family member was afraid to tell family that they were dealing with it because it was embarrassing, like
they couldn't control themselves
● most people around me are accepting and understanding about mental illness which I am very grateful
for :)
● Exposes vulnerability
● Although it’s more of a conversation, it is still something most hide or are embarrassed/uncomfortable
addressing
Across different cultures and languages, people talk about
and explore mental health in multiple ways. In just a few
words, please share: How have you experienced the concept
of "mental health" within your own cultural communities?

for help?
#Movies4MentalHealth

● Judgement
● Being scared
● Feeling like you’re a burden to others
● It may be hard to admit your problem to yourself
● Belief that no one else feels the same way
● Embarrassed
● Energy level
● Makes you not feel independent
● People talk about and judge people as if they know what they are
about, when actually they have no clue
● My problems aren’t as bad as someone else’s
● Feeling bad about “complaining” but life stressors are all relative

What did you think? How did you feel?
#Movies4MentalHealth
● Wow, I felt emotional
● Headache pain
● Sympathy, empathy
● Heaviness, I felt heavy
● Appreciative of first responders
● So sad but true that men feel that they cannot feel, let alone express
their emotions
● Certainly overwhelmed; heartfelt; first hand experience for sure
● Light at the end of the tunnel
● Guilty that society may have made them feel this way
● Feel for the wife and kids, may think they are the cause (at times)
● Being cognizant of the fact that mental health affects more than
just the person affected/diagnosed
● Wanting to help first responders
● Men have to be this icon of strength and dependability, they can’t
be ‘weak’
● It’s great that we have come a long way

How can we support ourselves and
others?
#Movies4MentalHealth
● Listen
● Initiate the conversation because others feel the same
● Be open
● Having an open mind
● Gently push beyond the “I’m fine” answer
● Advocate, small random acts of kindness
● Smile- it is okay. Speak up and speak out
● Listen to understand, not to respond
● Taking a second to ask how someone is doing, check in and invite
conversation
● Become awayre of resources and share them
● Making a safe space
● There are a lot of opportunities we have everyday to take that
moment and ask questions to coworkers
● Set up and respect boundaries
● Hug or touch if it is okay
●
