MH Across Cultures
Across different cultures and languages, people talk about and explore mental
health in multiple ways. In just a few words, please share: How have you
experienced the concept of "mental health" within your own cultural communities?
● we dont talk about it much
● In hispanic culture, mental health isn't taken
seriously enough or at all in many cases.
● it is not really talked about
● My father was a paranoid schizophrenic with
narcissistic and bipolar disorder
● It is not a comfortable topic for latinos.
● its easier to talk with friends than it is with
parents
● In white military families mental illness is
prevalent but often disregarded
● hispanic culture because of the family
culture
● people will say it's just on your mind
● I did not know anything about mental health
till I was a teenager. I think people mental
health should be taught beginning in Pre-
School.
● My grandmother doesn't "believe" in
depression or anxiety. What ever is in the
past, is not relevant
● i can't imagine how difficult it is for men to
express mental illness concerns
● Yes we need to talk about this early on
● Most my friends are open about mental
health
● Reduces the stigma
● We were taught to accept people as they are
(unless they were dangerous to themselves
or others).
● I am from Ethiopia love them pray for them
and take them hospital
● No labels, just acceptance.
● Causes SHAME
● no judging
● No one heals by shaming!
21. #Movies4MentalHealth#Movies4MentalHealth
How does stigma feel?
● suffocating
● tiring
● Saddening and unfair
● Feeling like whoever you're
talking to thinks you're
seeking attention
● unseen
● Stressful
● Isolating
● They dont bother to get to
know the real you
● embarrassing
● frustrating because you know
that doesn't define you
● Like a burden on top of what
you are already feeling
● feeling judged
● yes, embarrassing is so
accurate
● like im being dramatic or lazy
● ashamed
● misunderstood
● Like an out of body experience
of the worst kind
● Annoying
22. #Movies4MentalHealth#Movies4MentalHealth
What makes it difficult to reach out for help?
● Cost of services
● it feel unsafe
● Help isnt usually actually helpful
● Feelimg guilty wasting someones time
● shame
● money is major obstacle
● judgement from family
● Embarrassment .. also shifts in mood so i
feel horrible and then next day feel better
so i disregard my feelings
● time
● not knowing what help to get
● pricey services
● Trying to pretend that things are ok. Not
wanting to be vulnerable.
● parents dont want diagnosis
● shame and guilt
● counselor has to be good fit
● not ready to share
● not really knowing what's wrong
● i agree with help not be as helpful as one
hoped
● Lack of options nearby
● makes you feel like a cast away
● uncomfortable
● support getting help for anyone including family,
but for myself I think, "oh, I'll be
ok".....embarrassment
● worried counselor will report my trauma
● ignorance
● don't know how to explain it
● sometimes i feel fine and sometime sit feels like
the end of the world, so it's easier to ignore the
bad times
● Mandatory report systems: yes!
● not being receptive to hear about help
● not wanting to feel like a burden or add to other
emotional well being so instead you eternalize
your emotions and try to deal with them on your
own.don't want to burden others and sacrifice
their own needs
● Not wanting to bring down others, but it's so
helpful to talk about it
● many don't go to therapy due to mandatory
reporting. There are ways to talk about your
needs without giving the details that would make
a mandated reporter have to report

How can we support
ourselves and others?
● listening
● We have to be ok ourselves first so we
can then support others (:
● Be open and honest and let others
know you are there for them
● seek help
● reaching out to friends
● arriving and being present
● With care and listening
● we hangout with them
● listening and accepting
● no judgement of others and in
particular ourselves
● reaching out, and accepting if
someone isn't ready to share yet
● spreading positivity
● listening to others when explaining,
sometimes they don't need a response,
just someone to listen
● listening and speaking up
● being non judgmental
● Sacrifice
● Acceptance...
● i have found that it is often that people
give up on "unredeemable" people. I have
found that if i stick around no matter what
to just hold their hand and be present in
their strugglr
● Sometimes if we don't feel ok though,
supporting another person can give us
strength.
● We can be each other's strength.
● be present...just be
● Amen!
● YES
● Honesty really works
● Are you all real? Such good stuff being
shared by all of you. Thanks for the hope
● 👏👏👏
● I'm real! ha ha
● sending you all love!
