MH ACROSS CULTURES
Across different cultures and languages,
people talk about and explore mental health in multiple ways.
In just a few words, please share:
How have you experienced the concept of "mental health" within
your own cultural communities?
● It’s something that’s swept under the rug
● Mental illness is sometimes not discussed at all, either due
to stigma or our family does not believe mental illness is real
● I learned my cousin has bipolar illness on his instagram post
because no one in my family will say the words out loud
● I never had a doctor ask me about my mental health
● It’s shrugged off and not taken seriously, just keep working
or distracting yourself and it will “go away”
● It is like a social taboo

How does stigma feel?
#Movies4MentalHealth
● Constant invalidation
● Painful
● Silencing
● A constant pressure
● Frustrating
● Angry. Alone. Frustrating.
● Disregarded
● It’s hard to open up to others
● Fear of not being taken seriously
● Isolating
● Fear of being seen as a weak person

What makes it difficult
to reach out for help?
#Movies4MentalHealth
● Fear of rejection
● I dislike being compared with other people
● Some people don’t listen
● Being judged
● Not knowing where to get hel[
● We are made to believe that others have it worse
● People do not show that they care about you
● Being told we are just making up excuses
● Given easy solutions, when it is much more
difficult
● The silence perpetuates silence
● I wanted to find someone who truly understood
● Being criticized
● Fear that others see us as weak
● It’s uncomfortable

What did you think?
How did you feel?
#Movies4MentalHealth
● “Tattoos instead of razor blades” - extremely powerful
moment
● I loved her narration of what it’s like to be consumed by
thoughts
● Silence
● The visuals really added more depth
● Darkness
● The realization that we’re not along and how mental health
struggles might be inherited from our family members
● The overall story is impacting
● When she talked about one being alive or just surviving
● The telling yourself “go, go, go”

● Talking with someone (therapist, family members,
friends)
● Getting outside and walking my dog
● Yoga
● It helps me to process just any consuming thought
● Water my plants, meditate
● Dancing!
● I sare at my childhood toys and it brings me back on
how innocent and stresss free I was
● Drawing, painting

What did you think?
How did you feel?
#Movies4MentalHealth
● I felt seen, in my own community mental health is swept
under the rug and labeled as a weakness, something that
can be overcome if you just try hard enough
● I want to see the whole film
● Beautiful and eye-opening
● My heart :D
● It is important that people of color are able to talk about
their mental health in a safe place, and that POC are
represented in our mental health systems
● “You’re soft” and “You’re a kid, you don’t have bills to pay”
are definitely things I’ve heard in my communities as well
● I felt angry/frustrated about what the Black community
suffers through, and then I felt hopeful at the end because
the doc is bringing awareness
● As a man it is hard to share myy emotions, I was not raised
like that, I am supposed to be strong

How can we support ourselves and others?
#Movies4MentalHealth
● Activities and events like this
● Listening with an open heart
● Open up to others, and be a support for others
if/when they open up to us
● Start the conversation!
● Keep the conversations going and be a person that
people can gravitate towards
● Be conscious of the words we use “crazy” “soft”
“weak” “lazy”
● Show people that it’s okay not to be okay and you
can ask for help
● Accept that sometimes we need help anad we are
in pain
● We all have down days
● Hanging out with people who feel that way and
make them feel like they’re not alone
