MH ACROSS CULTURES
Across different cultures and languages, people talk about and explore mental
health in multiple ways. In just a few words, please share: How have you
experienced the concept of "mental health" within your own cultural communities?
● “People with depression are crazy” “You cant be depressed youre just sad”
● "Just pray about it and you'll get better"
● people with depression are lazy
● Within my racial community, many people claim that my depression is nonexistent and I have
no reason to feel the way that I do because I grow up in a privileged home.
● it's talked about positively in the lgbt community <3 in my experience, religious circles are less
accepting
● not talked about as much as it should in church and high school
● was told not to worry as much
● My sorority sisters are so understanding of it! I was very lucky to have supportive parents.
● "just stop being so anxious."
● trauma shouldn't be compared
● Or just like if you're depressed, i know sometimes parents can say its because your spirituality
isnt where its supposed to be and are not praying as much as you should
● everyone is capable of experiencing mental illness <3
● My fraternity brothers consistently let me know that they are here for me to hear what is going
on in my life.
● mental illness can be romanticized in some younger circles
● one of my favorite short films is called "suicide and goldfish" and i suggest checking it out if you
can handle that stuff :) you can find it on youtube. it's only maybe 5 minutes or so. hope it's okay
to share, it had a big impact on me when i was younger <3

How does stigma feel?
#Movies4MentalHealth
● a type of judgement
● belittles my experiences and difficulty
fighting my mind as if it is not real or it
is my fault
● It makes me feel as if I can't talk about
certain things, and I live in a bubble. If
I walk too far out of bounds people
think I'm "crazy" or "weird."
● not being heard
● uncomfortable
● overwhelming
● shame
● it makes me feel weird
● being judged
