MH Across Cultures
Across different cultures and languages, people talk about and explore
mental health in multiple ways. In just a few words, please share: How
have you experienced the concept of "mental health" within your own
cultural communities?
● Only crazy people go to therapy or a mental health facility
● My brother struggles with it
● In the rap community, it's used as a joke in most cases
● That's in the Hispanic/latinx community
● many public service announcements, build boards, and assembles
● All the women on my mom's side have some kind of anxiety so it is pretty talked about
● nate i would totally agree with that
● when expressing valid feelings, ive had it blamed on my mental illness
● Men don't cry
● In many black communities people need to "pray more" instead of accepting a mental health issue
● My father doesn't "believe" in mental illness and when I try to talk about my mental illness he just brushes it
off and changes the subject.
● I'm so sorry about that my grandparents are the same way, i can relate
● It's so upsetting that people don't have anything to say about mental illness until there has been a tradgedy.
● i tend to hold it in... have to be strong to hold my house together, take care of my disabled father
● its sad. I work in a classroom with young children and i see how mental illness with in households effect kids
● It has become so generalized that now when someone experiences stress, they say they are about to have a
panic attack. Or when one is really organized, some say "oh, my OCD is so bad right now."

How can we support
ourselves and others?
● Share (as we're comfortable), and relate
