Characters with mental illness are
portrayed as…
#Movies4MentalHealth
● glamorized
● Neurotic
● Normalized
● volatile
● Unstable
● heart broken or romanticized mental illness
● Sometimes, it is romanticized
● It can depend on the quality of the show/movie. I think
some shows portray it realistically, at least in my opinion

MH ACROSS CULTURES
Across different cultures and languages, people talk about and
explore mental health in multiple ways.
In just a few words, please share:
How have you experienced the concept of "mental health" within your
own cultural communities?
● Taboo
● No one talks about it in my culture. It is very taboo.
● in a hispanic culture, mental health typically though not always has a negative
connotation
● In black culture, it gets swept under the rug alot of times. Its not taken too seriously.
● The understanding of mental health issues and their seriousness can be low.
● My family was not educated in mental health so they view it as just an excuse or
witchcraft
● at times a wish i could just set healthy boundaries and not be judged by my family
● I also think there is an immigrant element; "I worked hard to get to this country to
provide for you, why are you sad?"
● Mental health is the result of living in an environment where the lifestyle is great.
● They use Advice than do something sensible.
● You can be labeled as being dramatic, over-emotional, or weak in Hispanic culture

What did you think? How did you feel?
#Movies4MentalHealth
● moral of the story, mental health=important :D
● That was so powerful. We usually put others first and we
need to learn to put ourselves and our needs first.
● I like the sentences like take care of your mental health as
taking care of your children
● Relatable but feeling helpless during anxiety attacks
● I think it portrayed what an anxiety attack feels like very
well
● i usually feel anxiety in my tummy
● I think the possible reason for mother's anxiety.
● I feel it in my chest
● I feel a tension in throat
● Very relatable. My whole body tenses up when im
experiencing anxiety.

How can we support ourselves and others?
#Movies4MentalHealth
● being attentive to our needs and the needs of those around us
● shifting perspective
● Something important you mentioned, it isn't being selfish because we can't pour from an
empty cup.
● If we feel comfortable, share our stories/experiences with others so more people can
understand and remove the "mystique" from mental health.
● Battles are inevitable. Each one carries a different emotional baggage.
● I agree with Avinash
● We have to take care of ourselves and be vocal about our experiences
● Talking with others about the problems who would help us to management anxiety
● when i feel anxious, i like to reframe the situation: think about was is around me count the
things i see, count the things i smell
● I try to read books
● Mindfulness is underrated.
● Share information about mental health resources. Even if people just gloss over it, it
normalizes talking about it.
● Book about Self-steem
● I think it is important, to be honest, and mindful of what we are feeling in the moment. So
many times we just we are okay and go through the motions instead of being truthful and
exploring what it is we are experiencing.
● yes!! i try my best to welcome those very valid emotions
