IN JUST A FEW WORDS...
What has self-care been
looking like for you these days?
#Movies4MentalHealth
● Reminding myself that simple things are harder right now so only
being able to get to necessary things during the day is more than
enough
● making sure I get outside during the day and off the computer
● Taking a walk in sunlight.
● Getting out into nature as much as possible
● going on walks, dancing, journaling, getting off screens
● routine
● started Meditation Breaks during our Post-Election series and so I
have been taking them throughout the day....and also taking a jog
around the block to clear my mind.
● Cooking!
● Sometimes it's painting, sometimes it's taking a quick nap, and other
times it's just making sure I eat something.
● so much cooking happening! YES.

● Silver linings playbook
● The Soloist
● I used to watch monk as a kid and that was one
of my first introductions to mental health

MH ACROSS CULTURES
Across different cultures and languages, people talk about
and explore mental health in multiple ways. In just a few words,
please share: How have you experienced the concept of
"mental health" within your own cultural communities?
● Within my church community, mental illness equals demonic
possession or demonic influence.
● “Mental illnesses do not exist you just lazy” -Belarus and all
russian speaking contries
● Acurate from a detailed and factual pov or scientific/medical
but not enough of it as part of a human experience
● Crisis oriented rather than preventive or acceptable
● "mental health issues" are a matter of will, or powering
through
● With past toxic relationships, mental illnesses were just "ways
for doctors to get more money" and "you're just giving excuses
to stay away."

What makes it difficult to
reach out for help?
#Movies4MentalHealth
● Fear. Whether it be fear of news spreading or fear of
being vulnerable.
● Often we feel like we won't be understood or heard,
might be worried about being dismissed or
invalidated.
● Becuse we don’t want to be seen as weak, we try to be
strong and try to do it by ourselves
● knowingly a long process, and the idea that reaching
out for help is going to make “everything” better, not
being able to see a better befpre hand

What did you think?
How did you feel?
#Movies4MentalHealth
● The main character appeared outwardly calm,
collected, seemingly content
● I could totally relate to the mask and the
pretending - "her depression is kind"
● Felt like I was looking at myself in everyday life.
This hit too deep.

What are some practices that
help support your wellness?
#Movies4MentalHealth
● reaching out to text a friend and just start a text conversation
● nature always brings me back to myself
● None! Sitting back and doing nothing/ watching feels very helpful,
but always wondering if depression makes everyday or regular
practices feel unecessary or not right for me
● trying to connect with others every day; nature; meditation;
exercise; slowing down - being intentional
● I can avoid contact with people who suspect I may be demon
possessed, and I can talk to people who don't believe I am
possessed.
● having a loving relationship with my inner critic - giving her space
and having her feel heard .
● Exercise, friends, playing with my dogs. When I first try to do any of
that i really don’t want to and feel that I just want to stay in bed, but
after I do it I feel better

What did you think?
How did you feel?
#Movies4MentalHealth
● definitely felt hopeful and inspired by Sal Tran-- how they learned to connect
with care and connect with a community that reflected their identity
● I feel that the hardest thing to do is art. I wish I could put my feelings when I’m
not okay into art, but I can’t bring myself to do it. Also, medication can be
stressful, being impatient for wanting to feel okay so fast and the feeling that it
may not happen
● The power of sharing and being vulnerable is huge! Even if it only makes a
difference for one person. That's one person you make a difference for.
Sharing also contributes to your own healing and validation that you are not
alone.
● the generative and productive powers of our experiences -- even those that are
the most difficult to go through
● It’s great how they share their story. I think it’s healthy to be able to talk about
your experiences and to be able to do so with a large audience is amazing

How can we support ourselves
and others?
#Movies4MentalHealth
● Don't be afraid to reach out. Even if it's just asking "hey is there any
way I can make today a little better for you?"
● reach out and check in with each other-even just a simple text can
make a world of difference
● Be open to others’ thoughts and opinions, dont be dismissive
because everyone has their own perspective of life
● Helping people to be more in control over their physical
environment
● Having more platforms for coversations like these
● When I hear someone else being told that their mental illness is a sin
or is caused by demons, I can tell the person afterwards that I do
not think so.
● Checking in, Taking the time to connect, in doing that you often
realize you aren't alone in how you might be feeling...
