Across different cultures and languages, people talk about and explore mental health in
multiple ways. In just a few words, please share: How have you experienced the concept
of "mental health" within your own cultural communities?
MH Across Cultures
● they are sick but mentally ill and that is illeness as any other illness and need treatment
● Not talked about.
● stigmatized, not accepted as valuable, not talked about, "
● don't talk about it.
● I am told to "stop being depressed. If you want to be happy, be happy." Completely
oversimplified.
● I have other "crazy" relatives in my family!!!!
● In my Armenian family, mental well-being is often overlooked and simplified as "it's in your
head"
● That its a mindset and to toughen up
● in armenian culture, it is supressed and looked down upon, or what we feel may be "evil"
● Not validated much
● accepted and talked about
● i am Armenian and talking about mental issues were and still is tabu in our communities but
now they are getting better in seeking help or go to counseling
● very religious culture, so they say you are not close to God
● not talked about
● most often we don't pay attention until its very bad
● my family were try to support each other . but the individuals refuse to talk, self included
● The reform Jewish community is very open .. therapy is accepted, taking care of mental
health is accepted. my parents always bring up therapy for every emotional health problem or
life struggle. They see it like getting a check up or physical.
● Cultural Communities Like I Don't Believe in God I interpret Life after death my way ?

● It's a burden one carries with them into
every situation.
● infuriating
● outcasted
● judged
● frustrating
● misunderstood
● frustrating because it blocks people from
understanding the nuances in a person
or people ..the things that make them
beautiful and unique
● Not being understood at all!
● not belonging or feeling different even
that is not true
How does stigma feel?
22. #Movies4MentalHealth#Movies4MentalHealth
What makes it difficult
to reach out for help?
● stigma
● ego
● Feeling that there is no help. No one understands.
● ack of access,
● Embarrassment or weakness
● Pride
● it makes me feel weak
● pride
● people minimizing another's concerns
● nothing but you
● Learned helplessness
● Feeling judged (whether self-imposed or not).
● people may find out in the future and it may hurt my emplyment,
relationships etc..
● Not knowing if I'm just in a bad mood or if I do need help
● poor health care in this country
● the cost too sometimes if there are no resources
● Thats so true
● closed mouth won't get feed
● i feel like therapy is seen as a drastic measure and we feel like "its not that
bad"
● I keep asking for help from the wrong people even within my health plan!
● Therapy is expensive for help
● It's easier to tell ourselves that we're fine because it requires less energy to
explore.

● Chills! Thats was awesome.
● That was powerful
● powerful
● sad
● anger and sadness
● nice male prose !
● I like the physical metaphor shown with the flowers
● frustration
● Anger and sadness
● I think its about acceptance- having to be more than anyone
should have to just for acceptance- something everyone should
have. I also think it's about love having to be mixed with fear and
a deep need for protection because of discrimination and
conditioning. And I think it’s about having to hide venerability as
a black man and the weight of that
● sad and almost like you want help you don't know how
● sadness
● Black men & women are beautiful!
● I felt the nice prose .

What did you think?
What did you feel?
● i think it was more of the fact that the person didn't get the choice
● in my chest, my breathing.
● it was about choice and not being given one
● I feel optimistic about the future now!
● Immediately jarring: the thought of reaching for my genitals and seeing
blood was impactful.
● Clearly this was meant to give us a glimpse of the trauma one would
experience after going through surgery.
● If I'm being honest, I'm unsure how the person who said they barely
found out she was intersex already as an adult .. like what might that
have looked like.
● they*
● society has to change why should an individual's life be ruined in
hopes of normalcy
● i blame the parents for being to afraid of having an uncomfortable
conversation.
