MH Across Languages and Cultures
If English is not your first language, does your language have words for
mental health, mental illness and mental wellness?
Do these concepts exist in your home culture?
● latinx culture + mental health is so different
● we have to show up and not talk about it
● I wouldn't know, never explored that. I would think its the same as here, out of sight
and mind mostly
● as an afro-american not until now is it excepted & talked about
● Latin- Anxiety is just something we should be able to "get over"
● Might be looked as weakness in some cases
● in a latinx cultures "mental heath isn't real"
● My mother's hispanic family suffers from a lot of mental health problems, but they
don't address it
● Its very hard to address, the label sometimes equals being left out of family functions.
● Crazy, Cookoo
● Indigenous communities think of symptoms as visitors. Like I am sometimes visited
by the spirti of depression. In this way it is not me, but in a state of being transition.
● I've heard the same thing many times from my Hispanic students
● Mental health as separate from physical, emotional and spiritual (and societal) health.
Instead of seeing the interconnectedness

outcome (Anakin Skywalker, Thanos, villains
