MH ACROSS CULTURES
Across different cultures and languages, people talk about and explore mental health in
multiple ways.
In just a few words, please share:
How have you experienced the concept of "mental health" within your own cultural communities?
● Family doesn't believe in my mental illness, so it's pretty tough.
● Latine, 1st generation, matriarchy. Think more positively. Pray harder. Exercise more.
Medication for what?
● my family was a sort of "stay quiet and be perfect" culture. my generation and adjacent
generations are very open in contrast
● As a person from a Jewish background I have experienced multigenerational trauma from
the experiences of my ancestors. As a therapist I have learned to have a much deeper
understanding of mental illness and wellness.
● theres not enough awareness in my own community
● my mom is black and my dad is white and they have both been super supportive of me and
my siblings mental struggles which I am super grateful for
● I believe in mental health, not everyone in my family understands, So this makes it hard for
the people in my family who need help.
● being in a mexican commuity the response i got was along the lines of "you have food,
shelter, and clothing" why are you depressed
● In my community of friends we don't use the word illness instead we say mental
wellness...Many of my family members have mental health we are all educated about it
● Major stigma around mental health in the family. Dad suffered mental health but always just
put down as "he's not ok" and everyone holding their breath. Mom's coping mechanism is to
ignore issues and work work work work.
