The document provides definitions and information about different types of digital file formats including raster graphics, vector graphics, and specific file formats like JPEG, TIFF, GIF, BMP, PSD, AI, FLA, and WMF. It also discusses topics like image capture methods, file size, file naming conventions, and asset management. Key points covered include the differences between raster and vector graphics, uses and advantages/disadvantages of different file formats, factors that affect file size, best practices for naming and organizing digital assets into folders, and tools for capturing images like scanners, cameras, and graphics tablets.
2. Raster Graphics
• Give a definition of Raster Graphics
Firstly, raster graphics are made up of bitmaps, bitmaps are
made up of pixel’s. Each pixel/bit records the colour information
of the pixel in the image. If you zoom out of a Bitmap the image
becomes more clear because they are fixed to a certain
resolution. If you zoom into a Bitmap the pixels become more
clear and you can see this outlines of the pixels. The image also
becomes distorted as it’s just squares of colour. Graphic
Designers can use raster graphics if they are making raster
graphic files for print and web publishing.
3. Vector Graphics
• Give a definition of Vector Graphics
Firstly vector graphics are made up of vectors also known as
paths and strokes. They can be formed “through a sequence of
commands or mathematical statements that place lines and
shapes in a given two-dimensional or three-dimensional space.”
The good thing about using vector graphics is that the image
doesn’t contain bits, this allows you to zoom in and out without
distorting the image (It will always have the same quality). “Also
the file is much smaller”.
5. JPEG
Stands For Joint Photographic Experts Group
Used For/Example JPG is the most common image format
used by digital cameras, this is because the
file tends to be small. It is mainly used for
storing and transmitting photographic
images on the internet, for example
uploading images to Instagram.
Advantage A JPG file is usually small (low number of
bits). The file format is the most
recognizable format allowing you to use it
on different programs.
Disadvantage Because the jpeg is a raster file it will lose
quality very quickly if the image is edited a
lot. This can distort the image and ruin it’s
quality. When shooting on a camera it
doesn’t retain as much detail as when you
are shooting your photographs in RAW.
6. TIFF
Stands For Tagged Image File Format
Used For/Example TIFF is the standard used in the printing
and publishing industry. They are mainly
used for storing multiple page documents.
TIFF uses lossless compression to maintain
image integrity and clarity and are often
used for professional photography.
Advantage Because TIFF files don’t lose quality as
they can be compressed and
uncompressed this allows you to edit the
file without losing quality. This makes the
file really useful for photographers who
are shooting professionally.
Disadvantage Because TIFF files aren’t compressed by
default, this means the file size will be big.
If shooting on a camera in TIFF you wont
be able to get many shots as the file size is
large. Also TIFF files can’t be opened on all
devices leaving you with a fewer number
of useable software for editing.
7. GIF
Stands For Graphics Interchange Format
Used For/Example Gifs are used on the internet as small
videos/animations that last around 10
seconds. They are a series of images
played one after another to form a loop
which creates the video. This video will
keep playing over and over.
Advantage Gifs are very useful is someone needs to
make a short animation. All they need is
the images and they will be able to create
it online for free.
Disadvantage GIF files are usually low quality, making
images used to make the short animation
look very distorted ruining the GIF
basically.
8. BMP
Stands For Bitmap image file
Used For/Example BMP is a raster graphic file format used to
store bitmap digital images. They are used
the same way JPEG and TIFF formats are
used.
Advantage Bitmap files can be easily created from
existing pixel date. BMP files don’t have a
loss of compression making them very
useful to those working on images that are
needed to have high quality. Pixel values
can be modified individually or as large
groups.
Disadvantage BMP format is very old, most people
usually change the format to JPG or PNG
when using BMP. The file sizes can also be
very large, particularly if the image
contains a large number of colours.
10. PSD
Stands For Photoshop Document
Used For/Example Photoshop documents are mainly used in
Photoshop for editing and manipulation.
Professional Photographers will be using
Photoshop at some time when editing
their photographs.
Advantage PSD files can handle simple vector layers,
making them more suitable for
importuning and exporting data from
programs like adobe illustrator. PSD files
can also be heavily manipulated whilst
keeping their quality at a very high level.
Disadvantage PSD files can only be accessed when using
Photoshop software. This restricts you to
access the file if you don’t have the right
software.
11. AI
Stands For Adobe Illustrator Art
Used For/Example AI file format was originally a native
format called PGF. AI files are used to
create logos and other images in digital
art.
Advantage AI files can be adjusted and rescales.
Making it good for business users because
they can transfer their business logo from
a business card to something larger like a
shop sign.
Disadvantage When using an AI file you are basically
using your own articular skills, if you do
not have art skills it is going to be hard
creating images on it.
12. FLA
Stands For Flash File
Used For/Example The FLA format was created by the Adobe
Flash program. FLA files are editable and
contain an animation or whole movie in
flash. It is basically used to create
animation and games.
Advantage The FLA format can produce high quality
files with a small file size this will help
professionals as they can store more
animations allow them to refer back to in
the future if needed. They can also
include sound and video.
Disadvantage However the FLA file isn’t as powerful as
other formats making it a last resort if
needed for professionals.
13. WMF
Stands For Windows Metafile
Used For/Example WMF files are similar to AI files and are
mainly used for logo’s. These files are
useful for company’s that want to create
their own logo’s.
Advantage These files can be scaled big and small and
because it’s a vector it will not loss
definition so the images will always stay at
a high quality. These files can also contain
both vector and bitmap components.
Disadvantage WMF can’t be used on all devices. This
restricts the user from using all the time
and will have to get the right software to
access the file.
15. Compression
Definition Lossy compression is the way in which
files sizes are reduced by reducing the
amount of information that is saved. You
can still work with compressed the same
way you work with uncompressed files.
Advantage When compressing a file you are reducing
it’s file size this will increase the space you
have when storing files.
Disadvantage If you want to compress a file you must
have the right software to do so. This may
mean you might have to buy different
software to compress different file
formats.
16. Image Capture
Method Scanner
How is it used for image capture of
graphics
When using a scanner you are scanning in
physical images (none digital). This means
you can scan sketches/drawings, physical
photos or mix media products into a digital
form.
Method Camera
How is it used for image capture of
graphics
The camera is used to take pictures. These
pictures will be auto compressed if the file
size is set to JPEG. The camera will take
digital shots.
Method Graphics Tablet
How is it used for image capture of
graphics
A graphics tablet is a piece of technology
that allows you to control the mouse with
a pen. It is mainly used for artistic people
that want to create characters and such
which can then be edited later on.
17. Optimising
Why would you optimise? Optimising an image will allow the user or
creator to post it on the internet more
easily. It will also allow the viewers easier
access to view the image without having
to wait a long time for the image to load
if it has unneeded pixels.
How can you optimise? The larger the file size the long the image
takes to download. So if you are optimising
the image you will want to lower the file
size which will get rid of some colour but it
will be unnoticeable since the pixel’s aren’t
needed anyway. This will make it easier to
download.
Advantage to optimising Easier to upload and download from the
internet and allows viewers to view your
work without having to wait a long period
of time.
Disadvantage to optimising When optimising the image it will lose
quality compared to the original so it wont
be showing it’s original looks when
uploaded.
19. File Size
What could affect a Working Scale
(Photoshop) document file size?
When using Photoshop, any editing done
to the image is going to increase the file
size no matter what. This is because you
aren’t getting rid of the original image you
are pasting over the top of it.
How could you reduce the file size of a
Working Scale document without
affecting quality?
If you want to reduce the file size all you
need to do is optimise the image. This will
reduce the images bit depth.
What is an advantage of scaling up images
before exporting?
Scaling up an image before exporting the
files makes the file easier for viewers if you
saved the file as a JPEG or another file
type.
What is a disadvantage of scaling up
images before exporting?
If you scale up an image before exporting
the image it could become distorted and
pixilated. If the image is saved as a JPEG
you might not be able to turn it back to it’s
better quality.
20. File Naming Conventions
What naming conventions could you use
when creating your video game assets?
• When naming the files, the best way to
name them is what they are, what they
do and whatever number it is if there is
multiple of the same type of file. You
can also section the files off into
different groups that have different
names. Doing this makes it easier to
find the files when needed and they
won’t get lost because they’ve been
labelled exactly what you need.
Why is it a good idea to accurately name
your assets?
If you name the files exactly what they are.
This will help avoid losing track of files and
what they contain. It will also make it
easier for you to find your files because if
you need a file and you know what you
need, you can just type the name of what
you need in and the file will show.
21. Asset Management
Why would you use folders when storing
your assets?
Using folders when you are storing your
assets allows you to create groups for
assets that go together and that are in the
same subject group. This makes it even
easier to find files that you need because
you can go into a folder that you know will
have the file breaking your search down
more and more.
What folders would you create and what
would you save within them
I would create folders with a group name
which explains what’s in the folder for
example, if there was three different types
of files in the same folder I would name
the folder the first word of each file name
one after the other so I would know what
types of files are in that folder. This will
help me organize my files better and
reduce the size of different files as they
wont have other random files inside.
