Graphic narrative
1. Graphic Narrative
I have studied 3 English fairy tales: Mr. Fox, Master of all Masters and Lazy Jack.
Mr. Fox involved a young woman whowas forever sought after saving her heart for one
man and they agree to marry. Howeverit transpires that Mr. Fox was a murderer of
young women and Mary finds this out by visiting his castle un-announced. She witnesses
a murder and as Mr. Fox chops of the murdered women’s hand it lands in Mary’s lap. She
then presents this hand to Mr. Fox in front of her family and Mr. Fox is slaughtered.
Master of all Masters was a comical fairy tale that involveda young girl finding workas a
servant in an old man’s house. She quickly learns that the old man has various strange
names for different household objects including his bed and cat. Later that night his cat
sets it’s tail on fire and the girl has to name all the funny names to the old man so he can
understand.
Lazy Jackinvolves a boy whois notoriously lazy and is pressured by his mother into
finding a job. His finds workwith 6 different people and each day he loses his 6 different
kinds of payment through advice from his mother that would have been acceptable for
the payment of the previous day. As a result of this, Jackruins all forms of payment until
one day he cures a deaf girl by making her laugh and her father fulfillsa promise that
she wouldmarry the first man to make her laugh. Jackand his wifethen lived in a large
house withhis mother in perfect harmony.
Characters
In each of the fairy tales I have studied I have foundthere to be 1 main character with
maybe one or twosupporting characters and a series of extras that are used for depth of
plot. The main character is usually a child or teenager and is not gender specific. The
supporting characters are most likely parents or employers of the children. The extras
are a lot of the time extended family members. The main character is usually mistreated
according to today’s standards by the supporting characters for example in Lazy Jack,
Jack(main character)is mistreated by his mother (supporting character) and is driven
to find workand when he makes mistakes he is verbally abused. I can use this as a
starting point in the sense that I will most likely use an adolescent as the main character
as they are most relatable to the target audience and a mistreat of the protagonist can
encourage a good amount of sympathy and a willingness to get behind the character.
Location
The time period of whichthey are set looks to be very similar to each other. This period
appears to be in the medieval era when laws for the individual were very much lacking
and youcould be paid in something like a glass of milk like wesaw in Lazy Jack.Physical
location differs depending on which extreme the story is set in, either extreme wealth or
extreme poverty. In Mr. Fox wesee that the main character is a Lady, whichis a noble.
Howeverin Master of all Masters a young girl seeks work as a servant meaning she is
not of wealthy background. If the main character is a rich one then it likely tobe set in a
castle or some other residence that wouldshow this and if the main characteris poor it
is likely to be set in a little cottage.
Audience
The audience is virtually the same for all three tales I studied, a younger, adolescent age
group. This is because the target audience, in order to be engaged enough to enjoy the
story, want to be able to understand the thought processes and corresponding actions of
the main character. I will employ something very similar into my story in the sense that
2. it will be targeted towards a younger audience withrelatable characters but still with a
fantasy theme in regards to the setting and plot of the story.
Visual Style
The visual style I aim to create based on whatI’ve found will be futuristic in terms of
setting and that will also be reflected in the plot. This means that my visual style will be
fairly unrealistic but I will ground it with the formats of the characters. However, the
basis of characters willbe similar to the characters I have studied. This will be shown
through he mistreatment of the protagonist by others and the clear goal at the end.
Adaptation
I could adapt the Lazy Jackidea of him trying various methods to accomplish his goal in
my story. This would be done by adapting the idea of trying and trying again different
methods until you succeed to my character trying to fix his car to compete in the race
but failing until eventually succeeding and being able to compete in the race. I could also
adapt the idea of Mr. Fox the character seeming at first like a protagonist but later
turning out be the villain to my story by using the protagonist’s only friend who ends up
hiding a tool that was crucialto the fixing of the car. However,my story won’t be as
graphic as the end of Mr. Fox.
