• Raster graphics are also know as bitmap images as raster graphics are made up
of bitmaps . Each bit ,also known as a pixel which is made up of millions of
little squares, records the colour of that section of the image.
• Bitmapped images have a fixed resolution so enlarging bitmapped images can
end up with the image becoming distorted for instance when Photoshop is set
at 300dpi to resize that would end up with the image looking quite blurry or
distorted and the squares can sometimes be seen on top with the image but
they can be scaled down with out losing any of it quality as it is compressing
the file down further to try and keep the quality
• If a digital camera mentions megapixels it mean that it has one million
pixels/bits in the image. Raster graphics are usually tend to be a larger files.
• Bitmap images are highly common in digital publication and with images
found on the internet but don’t work as well in printed as they are low
resolution files so they might be printed looking distorted. Raster graphics are
used with JPEGS or GIFS as they are commonly compressed files used on the
internet like on google images or on social media.

3. Vector Graphics
• Vector graphics are made up of vectors also known as paths and strokes, they
are mainly made up of curves and thin white lines.
• Vectors/paths are defined by a start and an end with points, angles and
curves between them, from this the vector/path can become a triangle, a
square or a curved shape. These paths can make up any simple diagram or
complex drawings, they can even define characters of specific typefaces
• A vector can be enlarged or be made smaller and still lose no definition or not
become distorted so the edges of the image/graphics that gets enlarged will
still have a smooth edge and keep the image looking clean as well as smooth,
this is why they can be used for business cards or logos but also be enlarged
for billboards or posters.
• Many flash animations use vector graphics as they usually will scale better
then bitmap images, and are usually smaller files then bitmap images. Adobe
illustrator is widely known for using vector graphics as wells as any EPS file or
macromedia freehand file as these are professional tools for design.

make transfer times shorter the a large
file. The colour is also very clear and the
contrast is quite bright so it makes photos
look great.
Disadvantage Every time the file gets compressed the
image loses it quality and become
distorted or it may fall apart into the
individual squares this could make the
smooth colour look harsh.. They aren’t
very suitable for working with text and

Stands For Tagged Image File Format
Used For/Example Usually used for desktop publishing so it is
used to make digital products or can be
used to design and make magazines, it is
very popular with graphic designers.
Advantage An advantage of a tiff file format is that it
doesn’t get compressed so it loses no
data, which also means that the images
are always in a high quality and stay that
way.
Disadvantage The disadvantages of a tiff file format is
that the files are not always supported on
sites or computers. The images are usually
to big to be put on the internet. Because
the files are usually so big you cant always
email the files across as they are to big to
be attached and also can not be stored on

7. GIF
Stands For Graphic Interchange Format
Used For/Example GIFS are used for short digital animations,
they are commonly found on the internet.
Advantage The advantages of using GIFS would be
that it can support animation effects as it
is only an animation. A gif can compress
the images into a small file. It is better for
images that contain few colours as a Gif
only supports a certain amount of colours.
Disadvantage There are newer types of formats that
have replaced the old type of GIF.

Stands For Bitmap Image File
Used For/Example A BMP is used to define independent
bitmaps.
Advantage The advantages of BMP files are that they
can easily be created from already exiting

Stands For Adobe Illustrator
Used For/Example Adobe Illustrator is commonly used for
logo design or art work and is mainly used
by designers
Advantage The advantages of using AI files are that
the work can be scaled from big to small
or the other way as the vectors don’t lose
definition, it gives the user more felexibity
with customisation and editing.
Disadvantage The design software is quite hard to use so
you would need some skill to work it. If
the user want to create a realistic
photo/drawing they would have to have a
good eye for detail

Used For/Example A Flash File is mainly used for creating
animations or games.
Advantage The advantages of using a FLA file is that it
can produce high quality files and include
sound and video. If the users have a slow

Stands For Windows Metafile
Used For/Example This is commonly used for creating logos
and designs, it isn’t used professionally.

also be scaled without losing definition.
Disadvantage There isn't much software that can open
this type of file. The files wont be
compatible with apple mac’s and other
computers that don’t have windows
