Digital Graphic Narrative Planning
Use this booklet to help structure your planning and collate your planning documents.
Considerations:
There are lots of things to consider in this project. Fill out each section in detail to show you have thought about each one. You
should imagine that this is a live project, so considerations like cost, quantity and codes of practice must be thought about in that
context rather than just as a college project.
Costs: During the creation of my book. There will be no costs. All of the equipment I use will be college
property therefore I can use it for free. All sources are free. The only thing that would actually cost would be
the paper costs and time used when creating the book but since the book will be created at college it will all
be free. All the images created in Photoshop will be my own creations to avoid copyright.
Available resources: All the resources I will be using are available. The computer is free and can be used for
more than three hours a day. All the software I need are available at college and at home on my own
computer. All images, background and characters used in the book will be my own creations. I will be using
21x21 cm paper (A4 at first then cut down to 21x21cm).
Quantity: When creating my book there will be 12 pages inside the book and a cover and back for the book.
The book will be produced over 100 times. If the reviews on the book turn out to be good the book will be
produced over 1000 times. This all depends on how the book does in its first day of release.
Audience and Target Market: This book is aimed at the younger audience aged from 3-9 years of age. The
gender is aimed at both genders as the book contains a prince, princess and werewolf. The book doesn’t
have a class specific tag, it’s aimed at all classes and will be affordable by all classes.
Quality Factors: To ensure the quality of the book is up to scratch I will use my time as efficient as possible
to make sure all factors of the book at good. I will make sure to create a clear plan of what I will achieve in
each session. This will give me a clear result of how the book will turn out at the end of the two weeks. If I
have any spare time over the weekend between each session period, I can use that time to make sure
everything is up to scratch and can also use that time to resolve any problems.
Codes of Practice: If my project as a (real world) project then after creating the book I will need someone to
publish the book. The code of practice allows me to follow a set of guidelines/rules which will help me see if
my book is ready for sale. The publisher and author must keep in close contact over the contract formed. The
publisher must suggest as many opportunities for amendments as possible over the course of production.
Also the contract must set out the anticipated timetable for publication.
Regulation: When regulating the book, the 2010 Equality Act may come into play if the content in your book
has a racial and cultural background. If the characters in your book at African American and are displayed in a
bad way this comes over the equality act as the book is discriminating a race. Also when regulating your book,
the obscene publications act 1959 may come into play. If the book contains obscene imagery or text, the book
can be regulated under this act. This act helps prevent younger audiences from experiencing any obscene
imagery and text.
Copyright: When creating my book, I will make not to copy anyone else’s work and all my work will be
original. This book will be my own creation. Although I will be using a fairy tale, most fairy tales were created a
long time ago and they aren’t considered copyright since the person that created the fairy tale is probably
dead and doesn’t exist anymore. Over the years the fairy tale will have been manipulated more and more so
the original will probably be lost. Also I have changed some of the characters in my book so that it doesn’t fully
match the original story. This has allowed me to create my own original characters and background.
Ethical Issues: My book doesn’t contain any cultural sensitive content. I have made sure to keep all the
characters new and original with no backstory. This avoids all cultural and racial discrimination if it was
involved in the book in the first place. Different characters may be different colours but that’s just how I’ve
created them. My book will avoid all ethical issues as most of the book is brand new. The only thing that could
create ethical issues would be the original fairy tale itself but since I’ve changed the characters this avoids that
problem.
Resources:
A successful project relies on good planning. Considering all the resources you will need for a project and then assessing which
you already have and which you need will help ensure you are ready to start your project.
If there is a resource you don’t currently have, then consider how you are going to get it before you go in to production.
Resource:
Do you have
it? What do you need to do to get it?
Computer Yes
I have a computer at college and home, this allows me to do
work in both locations increasing my work time.
Software needed for the projects
creation. Yes
I have the software at both college and home allowing me to be
efficient with my time and how I spend it.
My Script Yes
I have my script and will have it with me through the production
of the book pages to make sure it fits the imagery.
The references I use for the characters No/Yes
To get references I can use the internet and google different
people to use for my characters. I will not be using cartoon
characters as they would look very similar when created.
Digital Flats Yes
I have the digital flat plans and will use them to help create the
characters and background for the book pages.
Production Schedule:
Delivering your project on time is vital. In order to do this, you need a solid plan of action. This will help you divide up your work in
to manageable chunks to be tackled one at a time. It will also allow you to plan which tasks need to be done in which order. It will
also allow you to track your progress each day. If you are falling behind, you will need to modify the way you work. If you work
faster than expected, you can clearly see what the next steps you need to take are.
Each session is a half day of college.
Session 1: March 13 Monday
All characters will be created after the page backgrounds. For this first session I will be using the digital
plans to get an idea of how I’m going to create my background images for each page. I will also begin
creation for the first page of the book using the Rotoscope tool. I might have already created this on a
test page as I liked it very much.
Once finishing the first page I will begin created the page 2 background. Since the page 2 background
is the same for the second, third and fourth page this will save me time as I can use the same
background 3 times and change the position of the characters. It will take the rest of the session to
create the page 2-4 since they’re going to be very busy pages as they contain lots of content.
Session 2: March 13 Monday
For session two I will be creating the background for page 5, this will be easy as I have already created
the page 1, since they are both the same thing but page 5 is zoomed into the castle front gate I can use
page 1 and zoom into the front gate then insert the character and give it more detail. This will save me
time as I won’t have to create a basically new background. After creating the background for page 5 I
will have more time before the session ends, I will use this time to being the page 6 background. The
page 6 background will be used for 2 pages’ backgrounds, page 6 and 8. This will also save me time as
I only have to move the characters around and change their position. Creating this scene is going to
take time as it’s a very complicated image which means it’s going to need more time to create. I will use
the rest of the Monday session to create the background for page 6 and 8’s background.
Session 3: March 14 Tuesday
For this session I will using Photoshop to create the page 7 background and door. This will be easy as
It’s a very passive image. I will create a door and wall which will lead outside into the castle courtyard.
This page will also be created from scratch and will be created without a reference. I will be creating all
the textures myself and will have two characters in this image later on. It will probably take 2 lessons
from this session to create so once I’ve created this image background then I will begin to make the
background for pages 9, 10 and 11. All these pages will have the same background as the scene takes
place in the bedroom and it shows the transformation of the werewolf turning into the prince.
Session 4: March 16 Thursday
For this session I will be carrying on using Photoshop and continue with the creation of page 9, 10 and
11’s backgrounds. It will probably take the whole session to create the rest of the backgrounds.
Session 5: March 17 Friday
For this session I will hopefully have finished the page 9,10 and 11 backgrounds for the pages and I will
begin the final page’s background (page 12). This page is also going to be an original page made from
scratch. I will be using the Rotoscope tool in all of these background images. I will also be using shapes
as well to create the bases for each of the images and to create simple shapes and such. Once creating
page 12, if I have enough time to start creating the characters then I will but if I don’t then I will leave that
for the next session.
Session 6: March 20 Monday
For this week I will be focusing upon creating the characters for each image and finalizing the book.
Firstly, for the first session I will begin with creating each character for their first reveal on each page.
Since each character is going to have a different position for each page. So firstly I will begin created the
princess, creating the basis for each character is going to be hard because they cannot be copied from
the internet. I will probably use a real human and use their body form to create the basis for the
character. I will then refer back to a number of different cartoon characters and add different details to
her body. I will make sure that all the main body parts, arms, legs, eyes, head and hands can move. This
will make it easy to change the position of the character making it easier to create different expressions.
Session 7: March 20 Monday
Once finishing off the princess I will begin creating the werewolf, creating the werewolf will be just as
hard as the princess and I will make sure all the body parts can move to save me creating the werewolf
again. If I have enough time in this session, I will quickly make the basis for the prince. This will help for
the next session as I am focusing on creating him.
Session 8: March 21 Tuesday
For this session I will carry on creating the prince and make sure that all of his body parts can move I will
probably do the same as all the other character with this image. I will begin with a human form
rotoscope. Then I will turn it into a cartoony look and refer back to other cartoon princes. I will take some
details from those cartoon characters and apply them to my own. It won’t be similar to the references. If I
have enough time in this session, I will use it to create the basis of the king. The good thing about the
king is he will only be sat in one position throughout the whole book as he’s only in 2 pages.
Session 9: March 23 Thursday
Today I will finish off the King and will firstly look at human king’s and slowly turn it into a cartoon then
refer from different cartoon kings that have already been created to get some details that I wouldn’t
usually get. This will make the king look unique and original.
Session 10: March 24 Friday
For this session I will have all the characters and I will place them all in their positions on the
backgrounds in each image. I will also use this session to place the text in their right positions.
In between the two session weeks I will also be doing work at home over the weekend so I might have
already done a few of these steps which will give me more time in class to carry out improvements.
Health and safety:
Your health and safety and that of those around you is very important. Just like in industry, an accident could prevent you from
working. Whilst we don’t work in a highly dangerous environment, there are still risks. Some are short term, such as trips and
spillages whilst others, such as long term damage to eyesight or back problems, may affect you much later in life.
Consider the risks based on the activities you will be undertaking during the project. Explain how you could prevent them from
happening.
Ensure you reference appropriate pieces of legislation, design to protect people at work.
Health and Safety Issue How can you prevent it?
When sitting at the tables people leave their chairs left out
when they stand up, this is a trip hazard and someone
could seriously injure themselves if they trip over a chair
leg and smack their head on a table or the floor.
When everyone stands up after sitting at the desks, make
sure they all push their chairs in. This will prevent anyone
from tripping on the chair legs.
Laptop charger wires could be low on the ground but still
elevated. This is another trip hazard which could also
seriously injure someone.
To avoid this, you can make sure that all laptop chargers
and kept on the desk and do no cross a walk way
between the desks. (all laptop uses stay on the outside
tables)
People could get eye problems or feel sick from looking at
the computer screen for too long.
To avoid this, we have breaks in between each lesson
which is longer then 5 minutes. This is enough time to
help the student out.

Planning booklet

  • 1. Digital Graphic Narrative Planning Use this booklet to help structure your planning and collate your planning documents. Considerations: There are lots of things to consider in this project. Fill out each section in detail to show you have thought about each one. You should imagine that this is a live project, so considerations like cost, quantity and codes of practice must be thought about in that context rather than just as a college project. Costs: During the creation of my book. There will be no costs. All of the equipment I use will be college property therefore I can use it for free. All sources are free. The only thing that would actually cost would be the paper costs and time used when creating the book but since the book will be created at college it will all be free. All the images created in Photoshop will be my own creations to avoid copyright. Available resources: All the resources I will be using are available. The computer is free and can be used for more than three hours a day. All the software I need are available at college and at home on my own computer. All images, background and characters used in the book will be my own creations. I will be using 21x21 cm paper (A4 at first then cut down to 21x21cm).
  • 2. Quantity: When creating my book there will be 12 pages inside the book and a cover and back for the book. The book will be produced over 100 times. If the reviews on the book turn out to be good the book will be produced over 1000 times. This all depends on how the book does in its first day of release. Audience and Target Market: This book is aimed at the younger audience aged from 3-9 years of age. The gender is aimed at both genders as the book contains a prince, princess and werewolf. The book doesn’t have a class specific tag, it’s aimed at all classes and will be affordable by all classes. Quality Factors: To ensure the quality of the book is up to scratch I will use my time as efficient as possible to make sure all factors of the book at good. I will make sure to create a clear plan of what I will achieve in each session. This will give me a clear result of how the book will turn out at the end of the two weeks. If I have any spare time over the weekend between each session period, I can use that time to make sure everything is up to scratch and can also use that time to resolve any problems. Codes of Practice: If my project as a (real world) project then after creating the book I will need someone to publish the book. The code of practice allows me to follow a set of guidelines/rules which will help me see if my book is ready for sale. The publisher and author must keep in close contact over the contract formed. The publisher must suggest as many opportunities for amendments as possible over the course of production. Also the contract must set out the anticipated timetable for publication.
  • 3. Regulation: When regulating the book, the 2010 Equality Act may come into play if the content in your book has a racial and cultural background. If the characters in your book at African American and are displayed in a bad way this comes over the equality act as the book is discriminating a race. Also when regulating your book, the obscene publications act 1959 may come into play. If the book contains obscene imagery or text, the book can be regulated under this act. This act helps prevent younger audiences from experiencing any obscene imagery and text. Copyright: When creating my book, I will make not to copy anyone else’s work and all my work will be original. This book will be my own creation. Although I will be using a fairy tale, most fairy tales were created a long time ago and they aren’t considered copyright since the person that created the fairy tale is probably dead and doesn’t exist anymore. Over the years the fairy tale will have been manipulated more and more so the original will probably be lost. Also I have changed some of the characters in my book so that it doesn’t fully match the original story. This has allowed me to create my own original characters and background. Ethical Issues: My book doesn’t contain any cultural sensitive content. I have made sure to keep all the characters new and original with no backstory. This avoids all cultural and racial discrimination if it was involved in the book in the first place. Different characters may be different colours but that’s just how I’ve created them. My book will avoid all ethical issues as most of the book is brand new. The only thing that could create ethical issues would be the original fairy tale itself but since I’ve changed the characters this avoids that problem.
  • 4. Resources: A successful project relies on good planning. Considering all the resources you will need for a project and then assessing which you already have and which you need will help ensure you are ready to start your project. If there is a resource you don’t currently have, then consider how you are going to get it before you go in to production. Resource: Do you have it? What do you need to do to get it? Computer Yes I have a computer at college and home, this allows me to do work in both locations increasing my work time. Software needed for the projects creation. Yes I have the software at both college and home allowing me to be efficient with my time and how I spend it. My Script Yes I have my script and will have it with me through the production of the book pages to make sure it fits the imagery. The references I use for the characters No/Yes To get references I can use the internet and google different people to use for my characters. I will not be using cartoon characters as they would look very similar when created. Digital Flats Yes I have the digital flat plans and will use them to help create the characters and background for the book pages. Production Schedule: Delivering your project on time is vital. In order to do this, you need a solid plan of action. This will help you divide up your work in to manageable chunks to be tackled one at a time. It will also allow you to plan which tasks need to be done in which order. It will also allow you to track your progress each day. If you are falling behind, you will need to modify the way you work. If you work faster than expected, you can clearly see what the next steps you need to take are. Each session is a half day of college.
  • 5. Session 1: March 13 Monday All characters will be created after the page backgrounds. For this first session I will be using the digital plans to get an idea of how I’m going to create my background images for each page. I will also begin creation for the first page of the book using the Rotoscope tool. I might have already created this on a test page as I liked it very much. Once finishing the first page I will begin created the page 2 background. Since the page 2 background is the same for the second, third and fourth page this will save me time as I can use the same background 3 times and change the position of the characters. It will take the rest of the session to create the page 2-4 since they’re going to be very busy pages as they contain lots of content. Session 2: March 13 Monday For session two I will be creating the background for page 5, this will be easy as I have already created the page 1, since they are both the same thing but page 5 is zoomed into the castle front gate I can use page 1 and zoom into the front gate then insert the character and give it more detail. This will save me time as I won’t have to create a basically new background. After creating the background for page 5 I will have more time before the session ends, I will use this time to being the page 6 background. The page 6 background will be used for 2 pages’ backgrounds, page 6 and 8. This will also save me time as I only have to move the characters around and change their position. Creating this scene is going to take time as it’s a very complicated image which means it’s going to need more time to create. I will use the rest of the Monday session to create the background for page 6 and 8’s background. Session 3: March 14 Tuesday For this session I will using Photoshop to create the page 7 background and door. This will be easy as It’s a very passive image. I will create a door and wall which will lead outside into the castle courtyard. This page will also be created from scratch and will be created without a reference. I will be creating all the textures myself and will have two characters in this image later on. It will probably take 2 lessons from this session to create so once I’ve created this image background then I will begin to make the background for pages 9, 10 and 11. All these pages will have the same background as the scene takes place in the bedroom and it shows the transformation of the werewolf turning into the prince. Session 4: March 16 Thursday
  • 6. For this session I will be carrying on using Photoshop and continue with the creation of page 9, 10 and 11’s backgrounds. It will probably take the whole session to create the rest of the backgrounds. Session 5: March 17 Friday For this session I will hopefully have finished the page 9,10 and 11 backgrounds for the pages and I will begin the final page’s background (page 12). This page is also going to be an original page made from scratch. I will be using the Rotoscope tool in all of these background images. I will also be using shapes as well to create the bases for each of the images and to create simple shapes and such. Once creating page 12, if I have enough time to start creating the characters then I will but if I don’t then I will leave that for the next session. Session 6: March 20 Monday For this week I will be focusing upon creating the characters for each image and finalizing the book. Firstly, for the first session I will begin with creating each character for their first reveal on each page. Since each character is going to have a different position for each page. So firstly I will begin created the princess, creating the basis for each character is going to be hard because they cannot be copied from the internet. I will probably use a real human and use their body form to create the basis for the character. I will then refer back to a number of different cartoon characters and add different details to her body. I will make sure that all the main body parts, arms, legs, eyes, head and hands can move. This will make it easy to change the position of the character making it easier to create different expressions. Session 7: March 20 Monday Once finishing off the princess I will begin creating the werewolf, creating the werewolf will be just as hard as the princess and I will make sure all the body parts can move to save me creating the werewolf again. If I have enough time in this session, I will quickly make the basis for the prince. This will help for the next session as I am focusing on creating him. Session 8: March 21 Tuesday For this session I will carry on creating the prince and make sure that all of his body parts can move I will probably do the same as all the other character with this image. I will begin with a human form
  • 7. rotoscope. Then I will turn it into a cartoony look and refer back to other cartoon princes. I will take some details from those cartoon characters and apply them to my own. It won’t be similar to the references. If I have enough time in this session, I will use it to create the basis of the king. The good thing about the king is he will only be sat in one position throughout the whole book as he’s only in 2 pages. Session 9: March 23 Thursday Today I will finish off the King and will firstly look at human king’s and slowly turn it into a cartoon then refer from different cartoon kings that have already been created to get some details that I wouldn’t usually get. This will make the king look unique and original. Session 10: March 24 Friday For this session I will have all the characters and I will place them all in their positions on the backgrounds in each image. I will also use this session to place the text in their right positions. In between the two session weeks I will also be doing work at home over the weekend so I might have already done a few of these steps which will give me more time in class to carry out improvements.
  • 8. Health and safety: Your health and safety and that of those around you is very important. Just like in industry, an accident could prevent you from working. Whilst we don’t work in a highly dangerous environment, there are still risks. Some are short term, such as trips and spillages whilst others, such as long term damage to eyesight or back problems, may affect you much later in life. Consider the risks based on the activities you will be undertaking during the project. Explain how you could prevent them from happening. Ensure you reference appropriate pieces of legislation, design to protect people at work. Health and Safety Issue How can you prevent it? When sitting at the tables people leave their chairs left out when they stand up, this is a trip hazard and someone could seriously injure themselves if they trip over a chair leg and smack their head on a table or the floor. When everyone stands up after sitting at the desks, make sure they all push their chairs in. This will prevent anyone from tripping on the chair legs. Laptop charger wires could be low on the ground but still elevated. This is another trip hazard which could also seriously injure someone. To avoid this, you can make sure that all laptop chargers and kept on the desk and do no cross a walk way between the desks. (all laptop uses stay on the outside tables)
  • 9. People could get eye problems or feel sick from looking at the computer screen for too long. To avoid this, we have breaks in between each lesson which is longer then 5 minutes. This is enough time to help the student out.
