Project area shows the material
you can use or have imported
Preview and effects area. You
can fully render then preview
what you’ve created. You can
search for all your effects and
choose them from this location.
This is the tracker area which can be replaced
with other option. Basically another quick
access box with different types of effects you
can use for example the tracker which I used
on previous work to track a phone that
showed a text message pop up. I tracked the
phone so the animated pop-up would say
perfectly next to the phone when the phone
moved position.

5. Workspace

This area shows your sequence, all your files that are in
the sequence, different time stamps, key frames, effects
and much more. This is the most useful area in after
effects and you will be using it 100% of the time.
This small box is to get general information like X and Y
positions of the mouse and the colours you are hovering
the mouse over, it also shows the audio information.
This bar shows the tool you have selected,
ranging from the general cursor to the ping tool
Key frames, key frames are used
to keep settings the same at one
point and make the progressively
change as the slider point moves

away from another key frame
which can be set at different

Adobe After effects Sequence setup Importing files is something you
must know when using after
effects. Importing is very easy and
can be done in lots of different
ways. The best way to import files is
to click “file”, look for “import”,
then once the options show up click
“File…” this will allow take you into
your documents and you can
search for the file you want to
import.
Another way to get
your documents into
after effects is by
finding them first
then dragging them
into the project box.
This will import them
without you having
to open file making it
a faster process.

8. Key Framing
Key Framing: Key framing is when
you click the Time-Vary stop
watch, this will create the first
key frame on the sequence.
Multiple key frames can be create
at the same time. Once the key
frame is created it will have the
settings it’s set at. Once you have
made your first key frames you
can drag the time indicator along
the sequence or play the
sequence to get to the point you
want another key frame. Once
you reach where you want the
next key frame, any settings you
change will create a key frame in
that spot. You can change these
settings as much as you want and
can be used to create very create
imagery.
Here I have the same sequence showing what happens when you use key frames and how the
image will change, because these are screenshots it doesn’t show the actual animation motion,
it shows the start and the end result and how much the image has changed and moved. As you
can see in the image above the time indicator is at the beginning with the original key frames and
on the image below you can see that the lions head legs and general body has moved position,
the foreground grass has blurred and moved position. Key frames can be used for anything
including all effects. So you can be as creative as possible.

9. Layers
Layers: Layers are basically layered 2D images, whatever is on top will show on top. Layers can
be moved around and changed to give different objects backgrounds. In after effects layers
work just the same as Photoshop but you can change them more than you can in Photoshop.
One thing I’ve been doing is changing the Z axe’s of the images to make the Plant and the lion
stick out in front of the background, I have done this so that I can turn them into 3D objects
and make them look 3D using the camera in After Effects. When using the Orbit Camera you
can see the Z axe’s of each layer and if you have changed the layers Z axe’s it will show in front
of the background giving it a 3D effect.
On Photoshop, layers are used to bring images to
the background or foreground, you cannot make
them 3D, they will always be 2D images in
Photoshop, you can have as many layers as you
want and you can merge the layers together.

10. Technique: Using the After Effects Camera to create 3D imagery from
2D images.
The camera layer can be found by right clicking on your layers box and clicking
new>Camera, this will create the Camera 1 layer. For this technique you will be using key
frames to move the camera. Once you have the camera layer you will be given loads of
effects you can change. If you go to the top bar and click on
the Camera tool it will show 3 options which allow you to
move the camera around. The Orbit Camera Tool will allow
you to change the Y axe’s and will show how far forward and
backward each layer is placed. The Track XY Camera Tool
allows you to move the image Left, Right, Up and Down, using
the key frames you can use this to create a panning effect.
The Track Z Camera Tool allows you to zoom in and out, if you
apply all these effects together you can make the image look
3D, first you apply the XY and Z trackers then you finish it off
with the orbit camera, this will give the illusion that the image
is actually 3D when it’s not.
