3. YOUR IDEA
Explain why you have chosen your particular idea, this could be for a specific
reason or a combination of reasons, all specific to you. Provide as much detail as
possible
I have chosen this idea because I was inspired by a film called “shot caller” and
have taken its plot structure and implemented it into my own idea basing a film
around it. I have also chosen this idea because it relates to a large number of
teenagers at the ages of 15-19. It brings to what drugs can do to a person and
what selling them brings to someone. It includes a large amount of violence and
stress put on by both involving yourself with drugs and procrastination. The main
character James is a drug uses and uses drugs to relieve stress put on by his
parents. He doesn’t do his school work and skips class to hang out with his
friends. One day James wants to buy drugs from his dealer but doesn’t have
money to pay the dealer. They decide to make a deal that in a weeks time James
will have the money and will pay 10% interest on the original price. But a week
passes and James still hasn’t paid the dealer. The dealer decides that enough is
enough and decides that James needs to pay the consequences. The dealer turns
up at James and tries to fight him, James ends up killing him and buries his body
in the garden. He then realises that the house the dealer uses to sell drugs has a
huge amount of stock inside and that he could use the dealers keys to enter. Later
that night James decides to visit the dealers house and finds a huge stash of
money and drugs. He then decides to take the place of the drugs dealer and
becomes the new dealer.
4. PRIMARY TARGET
AUDIENCE RESEARCH
You MUST conduct a questionnaire/survey/interview or a combination of all
three. Summarise this and add in any other primary research you feel is
appropriate
I decided to conduct a survey using Survey
Monkey, a website designed for creating
surveys. I asked 10 questions on the survey,
each providing information which I can use to
evaluate my film idea and change aspects of it
according to what the audience want. The first
question allows me to get an idea if my gender
balance is one sided or not. The graph shows
that male is the majority of my audience which is
something I want as my film idea relates mostly
to adult teenage men portraying similar life
experiences. The second graph shows the age
gap of my audience. This too is perfect as my
main character is a teenager meaning it will
relate to most of the audience through.
5. Question 3 on the survey is asking about
what kind of plot they prefer, the graph
shows that the results are close but simple
plot is still the majority. My film idea’s plot
isn’t too complex but isn’t that simple. I feel
like this result is good as it’s in the center.
Question 4 I have used to see if people will
like my films specific genre. This is great as
all the answers are yes. Knowing this allows
me to keep the genres the same and
progress with building my film around them.
Question 5 is a questions to gather
information on what platform the film should
primarily be shown on. The majority of the
answers are for Online which is where I’m
aiming for. Cable/TV , multiplex’s are also
viable but wont be as useful as Online is
much bigger and will get more viewers.
6. SECONDARY TARGET
AUDIENCE RESEARCH
Research viewing figures, sales figures, demographic and psychographic
info. Look up article, features or stories related to your potential audience
After researching many films for different reasons. “Shot Caller” a film about
gangs and prison violence. I have taken huge interest in the plot of the film
and how it’s lay out. This films stats aren’t shown on YouGov but looking at
online sources with similar content the main demographic is 16-30 year olds.
This sort of age group are generally interested in this kind of content as it’s
mostly people their age that end up in the bad situations that end up in
prison through violence and drugs.
This YouGov is for the audience profile
for people who like Kill Bill Volume 1. Age
25-39. Professions - Entertainment
industry. Media and Publishing. This
YouGov is to help me understand what
kind of people like heavy action based
films.
7. IDENTIFY TARGET
AUDIENCE
For this you should summarise your primary and secondary research, through
this you should then be able to produce an audience outline that you intend to
target. For this you could also produce an audience profile.
From my primary research I have found that the majority of my audience are male
who like crime/thriller genre with a bit of both simple and complex plot. The
majority have chosen online as how they watch films the most which is beneficial
to me as my film will be shown online. The questionnaire showed my audiences
age gap is between 18-20 years of age.
From my secondary research I have found out similar audiences for similar films.
For the film “Shot Caller” I have found from online sources that the films
demographic age is 16-30 because of the interests in crime. I also looked at a
similar audience for Kill Bill volume 1 as it’s got similar scenes. The demographic
age 25-39 is much higher than previous films I’ve researched as it’s a much older
film.
After gathering this research I have designed an audience profile which gives me
a baseline on who my audience are. For Age I have gone with 18-30, for gender I
have decided to primarily target the male audience by creating relatable
situations and experiences to someone watching. The audiences like both simple
and complex plots, so if I have a bit of both it could attract both demographics.
8. AUDIENCE APPROPRIATE
CONTENT
Given your idea generation and your audience research, what sort of content
would you define as the appropriate. Consider issues of taste, certification
[BBFC might be a good starting point for this], etc. Look at what you’d like to
include and what you are allowed to include.
Audience appropriate content is hard to figure out as the film I am making show
the passion of drugs and the practice of selling them. I still don’t know If I will be
showing the use of drugs but if so the film is definitely going to be an 18+. From
the BBFC, they state that the use of drugs in infrequent and innocuous ways is
fine for 18+ and that the issues will only become issues if the drugs misused and
shown as good. “Works which show drug misuse while emphasising the dangers
may receive a less restrictive age rating than works that present drug misuse in a
neutral manner” Shot Caller the film I have been looking at which I believe has a
similar demographic to the film I am going to create contains a large amount of
violence. Mine wont contain strong blood violence which this film does contain
meaning that my age restriction will be lower but because mine contains the
possession, use and supply of drugs it will be equivalent.
9. PRODUCTION
TECHNIQUES RESEARCH
Research potential production techniques you might want to use or
feel would be most appropriate.
You should watch films/tv shows/music videos that are of a similar
genre/style/audience as what you want to make.
You should collect clips/still images/how to guides/etc that might
help you. When watching scenes from films, etc you could also ask
potential target audience what they think.
You will need to add extra slides!
With each technique you should assess whether you can use it or
how you might employ or why you may want to disregard it
completely
10. PRODUCTION
TECHNIQUES RESEARCH
Camera techniques: Using a slider there are 4 main camera
movements you can do, slide, boom, push/pull and the parallax.
Each of these techniques add a different aspect to the shot and
give a different effect, the slide is simple, it’s the camera sliding
alone one angle. The boom is having the camera slide up and
down on a steep angle. The push/pull is when you have the camera
push towards your target or pull away from your target and the
parallax is when you have the camera slide whilst locking to the
target so the camera rotates with the target. These kind of
techniques can be used for tracking and pan tracking on the
subject. It allows smooth movement for specific shots which can
then be matched with the camera when the subject is moving.
11. PRODUCTION
TECHNIQUES RESEARCH
Will Steph Wilson. (2003). KILL BILL Volume 1: Fight Scene in Pasadena & Vivica A.
Fox's reflection. Available: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yL4xB9Hpj5o . Last
accessed 20th April 2018.
In Kill Bill Volume 1 there is a fight scene between two of the
characters. This scene contains a large number of match cuts and fast
paced action. Through the scene multiple different camera angles and
transitions are used. The props are also used for transitions which I
might also try and recreate. The main reason I looked into this specific
piece of work is because my film contains a fight scene which I want to
be similar to this in the way that its shot. It’s basically 50 different
camera angles in a short period of time which match every action
between the shots. So if one character was punching in one shot but
didn’t finish before the next shot, The next shot will be a carry on of that
punch but from a different angle. This makes the scene a lot more
exciting and entertaining to watch as a viewer. I don’t believe this is a
specific production technique but it is used in a lot of films to make the
action more exciting and thrilling.

13. CONSTRAINTS ON
PRODUCTION
List all the potential constraints that might affect or limit your production, you should
consider issues from each of these categories:
Time/Personnel/Cost/Technical/Location/Organisational/etc
Time is definitely a constraint that will affect my work, although I might have a large
number of weeks to film, other factors like weather and different times the equipment is
available will affect this.
Personnel is also going to affect how my project is produced. I need to find two people
that are willing to give up a few days to dedicate to my work. That is hard as most
people wont care as much about your work as they aren’t getting anything out of it. I
have have to bribe them into helping otherwise finding someone that will have
motivation to make something good will be hard.
Costs aren’t a problem as all of the equipment personnel and locations are free, the
only costs that will give constraints are the fuel costs, meaning that we wont be able to
travel long distances.
There is one location constraint and that is the house is unavailable when needed but
this is a very low chance. The locations are in the local area.
Organisational constraints are an aspect of bringing everything together, this can be
affected by personnel not turning up on organised days or having the weather rain on a
certain day everyone is planned to meet on. This could frustrate many of the personnel
causes some to stop helping and leave.
14. PRODUCTION
MANAGEMENT
CONSIDERATIONS
Think about how you intend to manage your project, considering all that you
have assembled in this file. Are there areas that will need more work than
others? How do you intend to go about getting your production made?
I intend to create a detailed pre-production plan to help form a schedule
including dates and times of filming which will give a good idea of how the
production will take place. Areas like filming and getting personnel and
props will need more work than others. Using a boom stick is also going to
be a challenge as I’ve personally never used one before. If the boom stick in
unavailable at the time or we don’t have enough personnel to operate with
one we will use a third party camera microphone which will also provide
good quality audio. Because I am boring equipment from both college and
friends it will be hard to get the right equipment when it’s needed. From
college there is only a certain number of cameras and tripods available so If
they are all booked out I am going to have to change the schedule to
different days. The film will rely heavily on the use of the steadicam which
isn’t owned by college. This means it will be more available as there will only
be three people using it. Once the full plan is made I will go straight into
production so that I can have a head start on using the equipment freely.
15. MODIFICATIONS AND
REVISED FINAL IDEA
Have you had to alter your idea based on the research you have performed?
Have you had to modify your idea due to your pitch/proposal? Or any other
reasons? Track it here and justify what you have decided to alter.
From feedback given I have been suggested to alter my main plot and get rid
of a few characters. The original story consisted of the main character
James having controlling parents and turning to drugs to distress himself,
then not paying the dealer, killing him then having a package turn up at his
door with a note saying “You’re the dealer now”. The end of the story has
been altered, the dealer now shows up at James house and they have their
fight, James kills the dealer and buries him, he then remembers where the
dealer lived and knows there will be more drugs, after searching his body
and burying him, James travels to the dealers house and finds a huge stock
of all types of drugs, the phone rings, James picks it up and its someone
ordering drugs. James realises this is a good way to make money and
becomes the new drug dealer. This is the only part of the story I have
changed.
