Have you ever asked your self…
•Where did people come from?
•Where did animals come from?
•Where did non-living things come
from?
•Human beings have tried to explain
their origin.
•There are two major theories that
explains the origin of man.
Theory of Creation
• It is the religious theory.
• It is found from the
religious books.
• According to the Bible,
Torah and Quran man
was created by God.
• God created the first
man and he reproduced.
His descendent
dispersed to all part of
the earth.
Theory of Evolution
• This theory explains
the origin of man by
describing the changes
that our ancestors
underwent until they
were like modern man.
• The theory was
introduced by the
scientist called Charles
Darwin.
• He believed that plants
and animals that exists
today evolved from
simple living cells.
Evolution of Man
According to the evolution
theory…
• Man evolved from the very small reptile.
• Over millions of years man acquired new shape and size as per
environmental demand.
• The clear changes of man can be traced from the Chimpanzee
look to the modern man.
• Man is believed to undergone the following stages during
evolution:
I. Australopithecus
II. Homo Habilis
III. Homo Erectus
IV. Homo Sapiens
V. Homo sapiens sapiens
Australopithecus
• Australopithecus
means ‘southern ape-
man’.
• They believed to have
lived around four
millions years ago.
• Fossils have been
found in East Africa;
Olduvai Gorge, Laetoli
and near lake Natron.
Physical Outlook of
Australopithecus
At this stage man …
• Used his hands to
defeated himself
from enemies and
holding some
objects.
• He ate the remains of
prey , fruits, nuts and
raw tubes.
• Australopithecus
evolved to Homo
Habilis.
Homo Habilis
• Homo Habilis means
‘man with ability’.
• This name is due to
the fact that at this
stage man could
make and use of
tools.
• It emerged 2.5
million years ago.
At this stage man …
• Had a brain of 500 to
800 Cubic's.
• His skull had the same
size as that of the
modern man.
• He used crude tools
from pebbles.
• He ate plants and
animals fresh.
• Homo Habilis evolved
into Homo Erectus
Homo Erectus
• Homo Erectus means
‘upright man’ this is
due to the fact that
he could walk with
two legs and his back
straight.
• He is estimated to
have lived for over
two million years
ago.
At this stage man …
• Could walk on two legs
while upright.
• Had a large brain than
homo habilis 700 to 1250
cubic centimeters.
• They lived in a group of 30
or more.
• They hunted together.
• Homo Erectus discovered
fire and made a quit
advanced tools for hunting
and cutting.
• Homo erectus evolved to
Homo Sapiens.
Homo Sapiens
• Homo Sapiens means
‘intelligent man’.
• This man lived
between 200,000
and 50,000 years
ago.
• He learned to
cultivate land and
domesticate animals
At this stage man …
• Was able to cook food.
• Lived in the caves and
started to paint
• Division of labor started.
• Labor were divided on
the basis of sex and age.
• Men were hunters and
women took care of the
younger ones.
• Homo sapiens evolved
into Homo sapiens
sapiens
Homo sapiens sapiens
• Homo sapiens
sapiens is the
modern man.
• Has a large brain and
great intelligence.
• They are able to
think, to plan for the
present and future
through research.
Recent modern man…
• Has developed
technologically.
• He has developed
tools in all spheres of
life; like agriculture
tools, war and
military weapons,
industrial tools and
information and
communication
technology.
