 The Study to Predict the effect of a proposed activity/project on the
environment.
 It Provides a framework and an information basis for decision
making on activities affecting the environment.
 Environmental Impact Assessment is a process of evaluating the
likely environmental impacts of a proposed project or
development, taking into account inter-related socio-economic,
cultural and human-health impacts, both beneficial and adverse.

 Enhance social aspects.
 Modify and improve design.
 Identify key impacts and measures for mitigating them.
 Inform decision-making and condition-setting.
 Avoid serious and irreversible damage to the

7. History of EIA

 The USA in the late 1960s, this led to the first
introduction of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA).
 NEPA was designed in 1969. It created the EIA process
as a means to integrate the generation and dissemination
of environmental information.
 Following the USA initiative, several countries began to
provide EIA systems - Australia (1974),Thailand (1975),
France (1976), Philippines (1978), Israel (1981) and
Pakistan (1983).

8. History of EIA in Bangladesh

 EIA has been practiced in Bangladesh since the late 1980s.
 Frist Chittagong Uria Fertilizer Ltd. Initiated EIA process in 1984-85.
 EIA conducted for big Bridge Construction in 1987-89.
 National Environmental Policy (GoB, DOE, 1992) mentioned about EIA.
 EIA was incorporated in legal system under ECA-1995.
 EIA is mandatory for the red category industries / projects under ECR-
1997.
