The American Filipino War And The Filipino Revolution Essay
The American Filipino war, the Filipino Revolution, the Filipino Insurrection, whatever name
you give to the armed conflict between America and the Philippines that occurred at the end the
eighteenth century and the beginning of the nineteenth century, it happened and it stays as a
footnote on both America s history and the Philippines history. This war, or how my friend
humorously called it, A chain of war atrocities , ended in the Americans favor. However, the
question stands, did the Filipino forces ever stand a chance against the Americans? Also, did the
Filipino war help the Filipinos get what they wanted all along, Filipino Independence? For the
former, you have to look at the belligerents on both sides as well as their tactics along with the
reasons of why my friend called the conflict a chain of war atrocities rather than a war; for the
latter, you must instead look at the different states the Philippines was in after the war leading
up to its independence in order to find out if the American Filipino war acted as a factor.
Philippines for a long time could be considered the Russia of the Pacific. Nations just kept on
coming to conquer them. However, unlike Russia, the Philippines failed to keep its independence
every single time. After America, Japan came and took over for a while. Before America, the
Spanish occupied the Philippines. Ferdinand Magellan was a Portuguese explorer who had a
mission, to circumnavigate the world. His ship and crew would follow him

Blackrock Essay
Blackrock Major Essay Assignment
Blackrock by Nick Enright is a drama piece constructed to challenge dominant social ideology of
twentieth century Australian youth. The text presents a very critical attitude towards Australian
society in particular the notion of mateship is criticised and exposed in a negative light, as are the
justifications, and outcomes of youth independence, and the marginalisation of females. Blackrock,
being inspired/based on a the real life rape and murder of schoolgirl Leigh Leigh (in Stockton, near
Newcastle, Australia on 3 November 1989), provides powerful, direct, criticism of dominant
Australian (male) youth culture, and highlights how seemingly harmless attitudes and ideologies
can lead to the most severe ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In such a contrast the writer is criticising the submissiveness of the female population, and
conveying the concept of fighting for your rights and defending your beliefs as does Cherie.
Tiffany s boyfriend Ricko, who is the dominant male in the Blackrock youth group, clearly
objectifies Tiffany through the symbolic use of his surfing trophy, representative of Tiffany,
through his eyes she is just a trophy, just an object which he desired and thus conquered. Ricko s
objectification of her is reinforced through the dialogue, Once, for him and Jason...I m not doing
nothing like that ever again, to which Ricko replies , You ll do what you always do...Cause you
are what you are. What you ll always be. So shut up and put out. Ricko s mind set and
personality are evident through this cruel and contemptuous verbal abuse, which demonstrates
his objectification of her, in that he only tolerates her for her body to satisfy his sexual lust and
that she is useless in every other way to him. Tiffany s character was created by Enright to be a
perfect example of female marginalisation and disempowerment, as she really has no power within
the Blackrock community and even in her attempts to assume rapport she is rejected Her
promiscuity is an attempt to gain status in the Blackrock community yet she is abused and
objectified by her boyfriend Ricko and pushed even lower in social status(as a sex object),

St Thomas Aquinas Research Paper
ST. Thomas Aquinas was a philosopher who was born in 1225 and has strongly influenced the
academic and theological fields since then. He studied under Alfred the Great when he joined the
Dominican order. After he graduated he went on to teach in Bologna, Paris, Rome, Cambridge,
and Cologne. Surprisingly he came up from a aristocratic family and was the son of a wealthy
banker, the story goes that he decided to join the Dominican order, so his family locked him away
for a year trying to persuade him from joining. Thomas Aquinass most famous work was the
Summa Theologica, it is a brief overview of all the questions and answers explained in the vast

For years Thomas Aquinas devoted all his time and energy to accomplish the Summa
Theologica, but unfortunately he never finished it. The story went that he had a vision while he
was sleeping and when he awoke he professed that all of his works were mere straw compare to
what he envisioned. One of his best know works is the potentiality and actuality theory,
potentiality is the concept that anything has the potential to be in a specific place or do a specific
action, but the actuality is the object being moved from its original state to its new state of being.
For example, if an spoon was sitting on a table, it has the potential to be moved to the counter, but
the actuality part would be me or someone moving that spoon on the counter. What a lot of people
don t understand is that he isn t making the argument that the universe had to have some form of
actuality to be created because if he did someone else could make the argument that God had to
have something actualize him in order to be in

A Soft Drink Tax According to John Stuart Mill
The Justification for a Soft Drink Tax
The Coca Cola brand has built itself into a staple of American culture. This is a terrifying thought
for public health advocates who see Coke and other soft drinks as being major culprits behind a
growing national health crisis. Empirical evidence shows that over consumption of soft drinks
clearly causes harm to the individuals who consume them, however, the waging battle over soda
legislation will not be won on the grounds of health alone. The argument that Coca Cola, Pepsi, and
other soft drink firms present is deeply rooted in American values and cannot easily be trumped.
What they argue for is freedom of choice.
In his book On Liberty, John Stuart Mill states, over himself, over his own body ... Show more

Therefore, in order to present a stronger argument for a ban on soft drinks, advocates would do
well to prove that in drinking soda pop, individuals cause harm not only to themselves, but also to
others.
To consume soft drinks to the point of excess can lead to the deterioration of an individual s
health. This may appear to be a self regarding action until one considers the cost such individuals
impose on taxpayers. Citizens whose unhealthy lifestyles regularly land them in the hospital eat up
government health care, at which point their actions cease to be self regarding and become
harmful to society at large. With this in mind, are we still to protect individuals liberty to drink
soda pop?
Soft drink firms may point to Mill in arguing that the accountability for such harm lies not with
soda, but with the society that raises gluttonous individuals. If grown people are incapable of
properly taking care of themselves, society must consider that it has had absolute power over
them during all the early portion of their existence; it has had the whole period of childhood and
nonage in which to try whether it could make them capable of rational conduct in life (80). It is on
this point that we must consider the role that mass media plays in the world today. The
pervasiveness of corporate advertising in the U.S.

Reflective Commentary On Alison Bechdel s Fun Home
Creative Response Reflective Commentary
I reworked Daniel Defoe s Roxana in the graphic novel style of Alison Bechdel s Fun Home.
Initially, the reason I chose the two novels was to see how well the oldest text on the course could
be adapted into the newest. Interestingly the texts proved to be quite similar in narrative; both are
versions of autobiography (although one fictional and one true), both feature a retrospective first
person, self conscious narrator (Booth 155), and both centre around a female protagonist deviating
from societal norms of the time. Fittingly enough Roxana also mentions her father in the beginning,
although she leaves him dead quite quickly. Adapting a novelinto a graphic novel is a drastic
stylistic change, and my biggest concern was to keep my adaption steadily tied with the two texts,
whilst trying not to get too carried away in the creative process.
I based my process of making the comic on an interview with Alison Bechdel, where she explains
how she planned the text in Adobe Illustrator, sketched and inked by hand, and finally rendered
the panels digitally ( Alison Bechdel ). Like Bechdel, I relied extensively on Google images for
various details of 17th ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The italicised words and German capitalization gets lost in the all caps form of the graphic
novel, yet something lingers in terms of autonomy of the author. It has a disregard of normal
stylistic considerations affected not only by Defoe as a writer but also a progress towards a
more factual prose in the late seventeenth century (Watt 105). Nowadays, the fixed structure of
grammar allows for little waywardness in format, apart from in the graphic novel. Like Defoe, the
individual artist has a certain freedom of choice, affected only by general conventions, of where to
place the text and how to guide the reader it is an interesting case of a rare anarchic individuality in

Flaws In Othello Essay
Research Essay: Othello by William Shakespeare
Was Othello a victim of circumstances or his own flaws? by Alijaeh Go 9B4 First performed in the
court of King James I on November 1 1604, The Tragedy of Othello: The Moor of Venice was
written by William Shakespeare between 1601 and 1604. The basic premise of the play is the
protagonist s (Othello s) marriage with the daughter of the senator, Desdemona: Their marriage,
unfortunately, is sabotaged by the envious Iago, insinuating to Othello of his wife s alleged
infidelity. The play reaches its climactic peak when the general s jealousy vows to exact bloody
revenge on the perpetrators (Desdemona and Cassio) that caused him to be a cuckold . All of
Iago s schemes come into fruition when the noble Moor smothers his wife to death: The play
spirals further downhill with most of the cast either dead, severely injured or in Iago s case, on the
process to be tortured. Based from this summary, a mere observer would conclude that the reason
for Othello s downfall is his hamartia his incessant jealousy that caused for his rash actions.
However, numerous opinions and facts beg to differ; they lead to state that external factors ... Show

Nine Levels In Greek Mythology
[A] war broke out in Heaven: Mi chael and his angels battled with the dragon, and the dragon and
its angels battled, but they did not prevail, nor was a place found for them any longer in heaven.
So down the great dragon was hurled, the original serpent, the one called Devil and Satan, who is
misleading the entire inhabited earth; he was hurled down to earth, his angels were hurled down
with him (Revelation 12:7 9). When Godbanished Lucifer from the Heavens and casted him down

potentialities of modern technology (Beauchamp 53). The author is begging the question

Susan B Anthony Research Paper
Throughout their lives Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton worked tirelessly to bring
about various social and political changes. From abolition, and temperance, to the varying long
denied rights of women throughout the country; from divorce rights, guardianship of children,
equal pay and control of earnings, property rights, education, to the vote. Together they created the
National Women s Suffrage Association, the Women s State Temperance Society, the Women s

time. With the amendment passed and the freedom of African Americans secured the league
disbanded and Anthony and Stanton formed the Equal Rights Association, whose chief goal was
the suffrage of all women and African American men. However, with the 15th guaranteeing the vote
only to African American men, and the subsequent abandonment of former allies like Fredrick
Douglas, the two founded the National Women s Suffrage Association. It was during this time that
the two launched their weekly newspaper The Revolution, with Stanton as chief writer and editor,

recognition and the vote caused the emergence of a rival, more conservative group, the American
Woman s Suffrage Association. While the AWSA sought to obtain the vote via state by state

Fear In The Odyssey
The Hero s Journey, as defined by Joseph Campbell, is a set of stages a protagonist must undergo
to reinter into his known and normal world after facing many challenges. One specific challenge
the hero must face is described as the Supreme Ordeal, which is the moment the greatest fear is
confronted. In The Odyssey, Odysseus must killthe suitors who took over his household to reach
the next stage of his journey. As Odysseus slaughters the suitors in the hall of his home in Book
22, not only does he enter the Supreme Ordeal stage of the Hero s Journey to face his greatest
fear, but also is one phase closer to reintegrating with society. Joseph Campbell, an American

While earlier books in The Odyssey describe Odysseus fear in his own words, Book 22 is the
first incident in which his fear is physically both described and displayed. This display of fear is
further expressed when Athena as Mentor asks Odysseus, Where s it gone, Odysseus your
power, your fighting heart? (22.236) This question not only represents the great fear circulating
through the hero in the moment, but also symbolizes his hitting bottom. Athena, once greatly
praising the courage of Odysseus, hit new heights of rage (22.234) when he became overcome
with fear as more suitors and enemies gathered in the hall, waiting to kill him. Athena then goes
as far as to mock the fear that overcame Odysseus when she states now you ve returned to your
own house, your own wealth / bewail the loss of your combat strength in a war with suitors?
(22.242 243) This emphasis on suitors shows both their inner weakness and the disgust Athena
has towards them, giving Odysseus the advantage in the slaughter. This advantage is
demonstrated when six of the suitors attempt to attack Odysseus and his comrades with spears,
but Athena sent the whole salvo wide of the mark (22.269). Immediately after, Odysseus and his
comrades return the attack and successfully kill four of the opposing men. After another round of
slaughtering success, Odysseus begins to overcome the fear of the Supreme Ordeal. This fear is
not lost; however, for it is turned around and placed on the remaining suitors by Athena when she
terrifies the suitors out of their minds, and down the hall they panicked / wild, like herds
stampeding, driven mad as the darting gadfly / strikes in the late spring when the ling days come

To make matters even more confusing, there are those within the Business Analyst community who
have begun to distinguish between business analysts who focus on defining software requirements
and those business analysts who are focused on improving business processes. SAP, for example,
has set up a website1 for Business Process eXperts (BPXs), a group of analysts with more
extensive business process capabilities.
This vagueness between BA and BPM roles creates confusion in practice and academia, which
impacts on role designs, skills assessment, human resource development, recruitment and
professional development. The impact of such was made clear at a Leonardo Process Days 2010
conference panel where BA and BPM role differentiation was reviewed. An outcome of this
discussion was a consensus that i) Practitioners struggle to recognise and articulate the skills
required (BA, BPM or both?) for various organisational initiatives and how to locate appropriate
talent to fill these roles ii)
Academics fail to position BA and BPM as separate professions and often bundle them as the same
in their course descriptions and marketing iii) Students and prospective candidates for employment

Lord Of The Flies Evil Character Analysis
In William Golding s novel Lord of The Flies he shows how evil exists inside of everyone, it is
the situation a person finds themselves in allows evil to grow or be controlled. The three boys are
an example of this. Jack who only thinks about himself he wants everything immediately which
makes his evil grow. Ralph, however, thinks about others but at times can be selfish which can
make his evil grow, but Ralph tries to keep his evil at bay. Simon on the other hand only thinks
about others, he does not think about himself which stops his evil from arising. Therefore, controlof
the situation is control of evil self.
To begin with Jack, Jack wants power and leadership. The situation Jack is in makes his evil
grow. Jack is letting the situation control him which is increasing the evil inside of him. The evil
inside him is making him more selfish and violent. For example, at the starting of the novel when
Jack had failed to kill the pig he cries to Ralph, [Jack] tried to convey the compulsion to track
down and kill that was swallowing him up. I went on. I thought, by myself The madness came
into his eyes again. I thought I might kill. (Golding 51). The quote shows how at the starting of
the novel Jack had good inside of him as he had feared killing an animal which makes sense as he
is a kid. This shows that Jack was not evil from the beginning. But the situation and atmosphere
increase the evil inside of him when he says, I thought I might kill this shows how the

Analysis Of Isaiah Berlin s Two Concepts Of Liberty
In Two Concepts of Liberty , Isaiah Berlin examines two different conceptions of freedom:
positive and negative liberty. He begins by discussing negative freedom, which he defines as the
area within which the subject ... is or should be left to do or be what he is able to do or be,
without interference by other persons (169). Under this definition, an individual is not free if he
is coerced by another individual from making a decision he or she would naturally make. When
discussing negative freedom, Berlin acknowledges that there is a fundamental level of freedom
that is necessary for personal development that should not be intruded on by others (174). He
contrasts this conception of negative freedom with positive freedom, which is concerned with
the source of control or interference that can determine someone to do, or be, this rather than
that (169). When discussing positive freedom, Berlin introduces the concept of the divided self,
where an individual has two selves, a higher, rational self and a lower, instinctual self (180).
Positive freedom focuses on the ability to develop the self mastery over the lower self and
appeals to the higher self. Berlin argues that the positive conception of liberty is flawed because
the concept of appealing to the higher self can be abused when the idea of a higher and lower
self is applied to a collective group or society (181). An authoritarian government can use the
rhetoric of appealing to an individual s or group s higher self to

Social Order In Elizabethan England
For my research project, I am focusing on social order in Elizabethan England and how the
Great Chain of Being might have affected that order. Marjorie K. McIntosh s Poverty, Charity,
and Coercion in Elizabethan England highlights how the upperclass gave assistance to the lower
classes because their Christian faith guided them to do so. However, A. L. Beier s Vagrants and
the Social Order in Elizabethan England takes a more cynical approach to the issue of social order
and argues that the poor vagrants were not given widespread assistance. Although Beier and
McIntosh disagree upon the extent to which the poor were given assistance and the upper class s
views of the lower classes, they are similar in that they both acknowledge that the only... Show

The purpose of her article is to demonstrate the varied views of the upper class and the multiple
efforts that were made to help the poor vagrants. McIntosh s article covers how members of the
upper class helped vagrants, the steps that the government took to help the impoverished, and how
the members of the lower class responded to aid. Throughout her article, McIntosh s sources of
evidence include other scholarly articles, census information, and population studies, but she also
repeatedly cites her own works. In her article, McIntosh reflects upon the difficulties of providing
enough aid to the poor, and she concludes this article by stating that many government officials had
to figure out how to balance genuine religious and social concern for the poor with the need to
maintain order and discipline, and how to do so without inordinate expense (479). Despite the
desire to help the needy, there were many difficulties in providing aid, and the devotion to the Great
Chain of Being s strict economic divisions prevented members of the upper class and the
government from deviating from the norm and helping the poor vagrants. McIntosh highlights that
even though many tried to help the poor, there was not enough support in the

The Organizational Structure Of The Walt Disney Company
The Walt Disney Company is considered to be one of the most active family entertainment

the world s premier family entertainment company through the ongoing development of its

An organizational design of the Walt Disney Company has a horizontal structure. It is seen in the

Advantages And Disadvantages Of The Medical Model
1.The medical model approach describes mental illness as a function caused by genetics that is
passed down to each individual. The medical model defines mental illness as a biological disease
that is caused by malfunctioning neurophysiological process. The DSM 5 is used in the medical
model as a classification system of psychological disorders to help the clinician diagnosis and treat
mental illnesses. There are strengths and limitations of focusing on the medical model and the use
of the DSM when working with clients. The strengths when working with clients on a medical
model perspective is that the use of the DSM provides a common language to use in the medical
community. The DSM provides reliability and structural guideline to each mental disorder. The
structural guidelines in the DSM provide an organized list of criteria and specifiers to help
determine the severity of the mental disorder. When diagnosing a client, there are many similar
signs and symptoms to each mental disorder; thus, the DSM provides the clinician information
about differential diagnosis, prevalence, possible co morbidity, age of onset, and progressive
development of symptoms. Hence, focusing on the medical model and using the DSM can be
beneficial to both the client and the clinician providing treatment. Nonetheless, there are limitations
associated with the medical model and the DSM. These limitations include focusing on the
symptoms rather than focusing on other factors in the

My Experiences After Attending The Practice Of Public...
Reflective Assignment
This paper discusses my experiences after attending the Practice of Public Health Leadership
(PPHL) subject in 2015, reflecting on important lessons learnt, the relevance to my work and the
support required for my improvement.
When I enrolled in this PPHL, I was not sure that I will get the best out of the subject due to
previous experiences of attending theoretical leadership trainings. However, at the end of the
subject, I was challenged, groomed, humbled and inspired as a leader. The subject has helped
more to bring a lot out of myself, stimulated the urge for personal authenticity and an
appreciation of the power of vulnerability in leadership. Through personal interactions with other
students and presenters as well as the group activities, I have realised that the success of the
team depends on recognising each other s strengths and complementing on the weaknesses. In
addition, I have learnt that effective leadership depends on team work, incorporating people
with different skills and abilities. I have learnt the importance of personal reflection and
meditation in leadership. Furthermore, taking time to know myself or who I am, has been one
of the great lessons from this subject. It has enabled me to focus on the roles of a leader instead
of striving to do everything myself as the case before. In addition, learning the skills of gaining
the trust of the people you are leading as well as inspiring them was a remarkable lesson.

Essay On European Exploration
During the early fifteenth century, Europeans began exploring through the Indian Ocean and to
other continents. An era caused with no initial intention, European exploration caused many
changes throughout both American and European civilizations. The desire to test human capability,
obtain goods non native to their region, and religious conversions were all reasons to explore.
Better known as the Three G s; glory, gold, and God, these motives were all causes for the

The map in Document two shows Portuguese sailors sailing around the coast of Africa and up
to India. This voyage was made in hope of finding gold, spices, and slaves. Literal gold was a
huge part of European Exploration and caused voyagers to leave their countries in search of it.
Other non native and important goods such as ivory, cotton, slaves, and spices had caused a
boom in European exploration because it required countries to begin trading and partaking in
voyages. The last component apart of the Three G s is God. In terms of God, religious
conversions, especially amongst Christianity, was a major reason as to why countries would
begin exploring. Document three is an excerpt from Christopher Columbus journal which
depicts his desire of traveling to India and converting the people to his holy faith. Alongside
other religions, people of Christianity had left their home countries in search of other lands
where they could freely follow practice their faith. The European Age of was caused for many
reasons. Testing human capability, obtaining non native goods, and religious conversions were

aspect of colonization in the Americas as well as the development of new trade

Endgame Figurative Language
Mankind has always had one question no living person can answer. What is the meaning of our
existence? Are we just here to just run around this planet doing nothing but survive or does
everything we do have a purpose? Samuel Beckett, a well studied French writer, seems to write in a
way that makes his readers feel like mankind cannot find its identity. He validates the idea that
humans are just wondering about life with no meaning with his writing in Endgame. Samuel
Beckett s Endgame uses Freud s psycho analytical idea of melancholia to develop the thought that
life is meaningless. The bleak diction, connotation, and symbolism used makes man rethink the
meaning of existence. The idea that mankind has no meaning in Endgame is explained through...

As people get older they experience more, which gives them the chance to be let down, and
disappointed. When this happens people get led into Freud s idea that once they get let down
they become trapped in a world of disappointment as shown when Hamm states, I once knew a
madman who thought the end of the world had come. He was a painter and engraver. I had a
great fondness for him. I used to go and see him, in the asylum. I d take him by the hand and
drag him to the window. Look! There! All that rising corn! And there! Look! The sails of the
herring fleet! All that loveliness! (Pause.) He d snatch away his hand and go back into his
corner. Appalled. All he had seen was ashes. (Pause.) He alone had been spared. (Pause.)
Forgotten. (Pause.) It appears the case is ... was not so ... so unusual (Beckett). The madman is
just an older gentleman who sees no meaning in the world, therefore he is seen as crazy to
Hamm. The way Hamm describes the madman suggest they are suffering from the same
pathological sickness. When the characters look out the window they see nothing but grey just as
the madman did. Dilworth explains Beckett s personal connection to the madman when he states,
Furthermore, Artaud, like Beckett s nameless figure, was mad, suffering for most of his life from
schizophrenia (Dilworth). This quote explains how Beckett had a close who was very much like
the madman which suggest that the character in his play was based of his friend. The madman is
a symbol of melancholia feelings and mourning for his friend. Beckett writes the play as if all
people become that madman who sees nothing but ashes when they look out the window because
of wounded egos. He uses the madman as a symbol to create the illusion that all humans will
eventually see the world as meaningless and ponder

Robinson Crusoe Literary Analysis
In the novel Robinson Crusoe, a young man desires to be independent and self reliant by going
out to sea without consent from his parents. Along the way, he has many challenges like being
taken prisoner in Sallee and having to escape an island. In today s society, many people have to
become self reliant when their parents no longer support them. They will go through many
hardships like not having enough money to buy food or pay rent, but they will have to be
independent and find a way to make it through.
The book Robinson Crusoe, written by Daniel Defoe demonstrates a young man and his desire
of being independent and self reliant. Crusoe s wants to remove himself from his shielded life
that his parents provide. Crusoe rebels against his parents and tries to discover his purpose in
life and goes out to sea. When he goes out to sea, he becomes self reliant and independent by
learning how to fend for himself. During his adventure, he becomes more mature and learns new
lessons and tricks for living on his own, for example how to trade slaves and goods. This theme
relates to life. Many teens like to rebel against their parents to prove that they can be self reliant and
independent. In the novel, Crusoe decides he wants to be independent and self reliant and
independent by going to sea without his parent s approval. I consulted neither father nor mother
anymore so much as sent them word of it, but leaving them to hear of it as they might, (Defoe 7)

John Stuart Mill And Plato
Throughout history, many philosophers have argued different ideas about government, but only a
few have discussed women s roles in government and society. Two great thinkers John Stuart Mill
and Plato, are apart of this small group of philosophers and have even been described as feminists.
In this essay, I will discuss the ideas of Mill and Plato that have led to their feminist epithets and
whether or not I think it is true.
Mill is considered to be one of the earliest feminists in history because of his campaign for gender
equality. In Mill s essay Subjection of Women , he argues strongly for women s rights, and gender
equality, which are the main principles of feminism. In chapter 1, Mill challenges the idea that
women are by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
[149] This argument can be refuted by using Mill s natural argument. He states that What is now
called the nature of women is an artificial thing the result of the forced repression in some
directions, unnatural stimulation in others. [152] In other words Mill is stating that the subjection
of women is something that has been ingrained in society for so long that is custom. Even the
ones who are oppressed, which are women, in this case, will even start to believe it, (which is why
they might prefer being housewives). Mill uses this argument to explain that custom is the reason
for the subjection of women and not the so called natural differences. To conclude this point, Mill
argued that the inequality of women was a relic from the past , and had no place in the modern
world. [150] This supports the notion that he was, in fact, a feminist. He believed that women
should be on an equal playing field with men and that having effectively half the human race unable
to contribute to society is a hindrance to human development . [134] Even though Mill s ideas are
important to feminist texts of the nineteenth century he still inspires feminists around the world
even till this day.
In Book V of The Republic Plato discusses his ideas about women s role in his ideal state. Plato
feels that women should receive equal administrative occupations, including the rule of the city as
well as its defense. Plato may be described as

The sequencing of the human genome involves the vision of an advanced medical science and
academic research. Nowadays, genetic databases are making a loud noise to easily determine the
relationships between lifestyle, environmental exposures, and genetic diseases. These databases
large lean on collective data in contribution to genetic information and research materials that deal
with the genetic cases of diseases. For the reason that genetic databank has a great potential of

Ethical principles for the prospective use of human genetic material and data have been introduced
in several European countries. The British Clinical Genetics Society and the Danish Council of

in the Data Surveillance Authority in Denmark which has the sovereignty over its genetic banks

In a summary judgment case, a person with a qualifying disability is the first step, along with the
threshold step for plaintiffs in making the prima facie case of discrimination requisite. There are
two elements of the plaintiff s prima facie case (in the absence of direct evidence of
discrimination) are that the plaintiff was qualified for the position, with or without

In the empirical study by Beford in 2013 , one assumption is that the ADAAA will result in fewer

Essay about The Possible Mechanisms of Scrapie Contraction
The Possible Mechanisms of Scrapie Contraction
Scrapie was first discovered in Great Britain in the late 1900 s. The first case of scrapie in the
United States was found in Michigan in 1947 when the flock owner had imported sheep of British
origin several years prior. Since then scientists have researched to find the cause of the scrapie
agent that are classified as transmissible spongiform encephalopathy. At the present, scientists have
presented three main theories that explain why the scrapie agent holds a dangerous threat against
its host and how it elicits its symptoms. Scientists are finding genetic alternatives to prevent and
dampen the spread of scrapie within sheep and goat flocks. They use methods such as tatoing and

Because of the mysterious nature of the disease, the origin of scrapie and the damage it causes the
body can only be theorized. The three main theories of scrapie and its structure s effect on the
symptoms it causes sheep and goats all present potential information about the disease and its cure
(Scrapie Fact Sheet. August 2001: http://www.animalagriculture.org/scrapie/AboutScrapie
/FactSheet.htm)
The uncertainty of the origin and cause of scrapie is due to the insufficient research to find a
solution to the epidemic because it is still considered a relatively new disease and not an immediate
threat to humans. There have been three main theories of the cause of scrapie and its resistant
nature to all previous experimental cures. The first theory is that the agent is a virus with unusual
characteristics. The second theory is that the agent is a prion, which is an exclusively host coded
protein that is modified to a protease resistant form after infection. The last theory is that the agent
is a virino, a small nucleic acid coated with a host derived protective protein that allows it to resist
scientists futile attempts at destroying it (Scrapie Fact Sheet. August 2001: http:/
/www.animalagriculture.org/scrapie/AboutScrapie/FactSheet.htm).
The first theory of the scrapie agent being an unusual virus presents a serious problem to scientists
because viruses do not respond to antibiotics and other chemicals of that nature. Scientists would

The Federal Reserve System ( Money )
^The Federal Reserve System Money, it certainly does make the world go round, and the reason it
is able to do so, is because people have trust in this little piece of paper. Around the globe there is
no piece of paper that inspires more confidence. Officially, the US Dollar bills are Federal Reserve
notes. Every note that is spent or received is part of a complex organization known as the Federal
Reserve System. The Federal Reserve System is the integral component that keeps the American
banking system afloat. It is, in essence, the governing body of banking and is responsible for
many policies, laws, and regulations that have shaped the American banking system into what it
is today. This institution has garnered a lot of support, as well as faced a lot of backlash in
times of financial turmoil. However, observing the facts and analyzing the history of the Federal
Reserve System will show that is has largely been a positive force in America. The Federal
Reserve System plays a large role in both the national and world economies and is therefore
heavily scrutinized. Under such scrutiny, one can find that a positive and significant relationship
exists between the Federal Reserve System and the economy because of the policies the Federal
Reserve enacts, the Federal Reserve s regulation of interest rates, and the Federal Reserve s
response to crises in direct connection to economic stability. In order to firmly grasp the driving
concepts behind the Federal Reserve s policies

The Origin Of The Land
Enticingly, the Spanish colonists came to this land with a passionate goal to develop the land

The medical community needs to realize it is not appropriate to use fetus cells in vaccines for
many reasons. Some wonder how the cells are even used in vaccines. There are two specific cells
used in vaccines (depending on what the vaccineis for). WI 38 and MRC 5 are the two types. WI 38
was first discovered in 1964 when many pregnant women with Rubella were advised to abort

Because almost all vaccines use fetus cells in vaccinations, many people choose not to vaccinate
their children, because the use of the aborted cells in the vaccine is against their religion. By not

give more people the opportunity to be vaccinated, because it would no longer be against their

their community had also not been vaccinated for the same reason, and because of this, a major

Pork Production in the United States
In recent years, pork production has become a big business in the United States. In the past, the
raising of swine was handled by small farming operations. Today, however, pigs are raised in large
factories, some of which have the capacity to hold more than 100,000 animals (Lynch 14). This has
created problems in terms of handling large amounts of excremental waste. These problems recently
became evident in the state of North Carolina. A few years ago, North Carolina became the primary
location for large scale hog raising operations. In particular, large companies like Coharie Hog Farm
and Murphy Family Farms began locating along the eastern side of Interstate 95. This area was
found to be suitable for hog farming because it is a coastal plain where the land is flat, the rivers
wide and human habitation scattered ( The Brown Lagoon 24). The state of North Carolina was
also favorable for large scale swine operations because there was a lack of laws regulating that type
of business. In order to ensure their ability to operate without being heavily regulated, the major
swine companies in North Carolina donated huge amounts of money to the leading politicians in
the state. Thus, the major swine farmers were able to gain a sense of immunity as a result of their
powerful political connections. At the same time, the state s leading politicians tended to encourage
such operations because they were providing employment and thus improving the overall economic
welfare of

A Groundbreaking Pilot And Inspirational Figure
A groundbreaking pilot and inspirational figure, Amelia Earhart became the first woman to fly
solo across the Atlantic Ocean and set many other records throughout her career. Her
disappearance in 1937 during an attempt to revolve the globe devastated admirers across the
United States and around the world. Her public career lasted less than a decade starting at 1928 and
ending in 1937. She used her fame to promote two causes dear to her: the advancement of
commercial aviation and the advancement of women. Earhart symbolizes the fascination that
aviation held for Americans in the 1920s and 1930s. Aviator Amelia Earhart
was born on July 24,
1897 in Atchison, Kansas. In 1923, Earhart, known as Lady Lindy, became the 16th woman to be...

Earhart came to know many of the wounded who were pilots. She developed a strong admiration
for aviators, spending much of her free time watching the Royal Flying Corps practicing at the
airfield nearby. In 1919, Earhart enrolled in medical studies at Columbia University. She quit a year
later to be with her parents, who had reunited in California.
Women, like men, should try to do the impossible. And when they fail, their failure should be a
challenge to others. Earhart was legally declared dead in 1939. Earhart s entire life had a certain
restless quality. By 1928, she had found a calling of sorts as a social worker in Boston who flew
in her spare time. When New York publisher George Palmer Putnam asked if she wanted to be
the first woman to fly the Atlantic, she agreed. June of 1928 Amelia flew from Newfoundland to
Burry Port, Wales, made her an instant celebrity, although she was quick to note that she had
been merely a passenger, a sack of potatoes, who kept the log. When she flew solo in the Atlantic
during 1932, another first for women, she proved to the world and, more important, to herself that
1928 had not been an accident. Amelia did not have many supporters in the beginning, during this
time women were not believed to have a role as such a pilot like Amelia did. After midnight, the
moon set, and I was alone with the stars. I have often said that the lure of flying is the lure of
beauty, and I

The Life of the Famous Author Charles Dickens
Charles Dickens was born in Portsmouth, England, on February 7, 1812, to John and Elizabeth
Dickens. He was the second of eight children. His mother had been in service to Lord Crew, and his
father worked as a clerk for the Naval Pay office. John Dickens was imprisoned for debt when
Charles was young. Charles Dickenswent to work at a blacking warehouse, managed by a relative
of his mother, when he was twelve, and his brush with hard times and poverty affected him deeply.
He later recounted these experiences in the semi autobiographical novel David Copperfield.
Similarly, the concern for social justice and reform which surfaced later in his writings grew out of
the harsh conditions he experienced in the warehouse.
As a young boy, Charles Dickens was exposed to many artistic and literary works that allowed
his imagination to grow and develop considerably. He was greatly influenced by the stories his
nursemaid used to tell him and by his many visits to the theater. Additionally, Dickens loved to
read. Among his favorite works were Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes, Tom Jones by Henry
Fielding, and Arabian Nights, all of which were picaresque novels composed of a series of loosely
linked adventures. This format no doubt played a part in Dickens idea to serialize his future works.
Dickens was able to leave the blacking factory after his father s release from prison, and he
continued his education at the Wellington House Academy. Although he had little formal schooling,

The Hero s Journey By Joseph Campbell
THESIS
The main points of the hero s journey by Joseph Campbell is the basis of most stories throughout
history, Divergent and The Epic of Gilgamesh being prime examples.
PURPOSE
These stories follow the format of the hero s journey because it shadows the steps that Campbell
explained. In his study of world hero myths Campbell discovered that they are all basically the
same story retold endlessly in infinite variations (Vogler). Campbell s idea of this journey that all
heroes complete is present in the duration of most stories that have been told throughout history and
in modern day works today.
INTRODUCTION
Throughout these stories the steps of the Hero s Journey are found to move the story along.
Beatrice and Gilgamesh were both called to fulfill their destiny becoming the heroes of their own
stories, fighting for what they thought was right, and bringing their society into a position of
security. Society today is using this method with or without trying making this route able to touch
the author in a more personal way, his archetypal development of characters and the exposition of a
portion of his own personal Hero s Journey illustrated through the protagonist s Hero s Journey.
(Dingman). The author can bring his own our eyes into the story not realizing that they re lives are
also journeys that they have yet to discover.
Joseph Campbell s hero s journey consists of three major parts: the Departure, Initiation, and
Return. Each of these categories containing

Moral Absolutism And Moral Relativism
Moral Relativism is classified under any positions concerning the differences in moral judgments
between people and the culture. Moral relativism is the position that ethical or moral propositions
make claims regarding cultural or personal circumstances. Moral Relativism affirms relative form
of validation of moral statements but doesn t deny them. Moral relativist typically view the
ethical standards of right or wrong are culturally based and are issued to a person s individual
decision. Instead of making their decision on what is right, decisions are based on self interest.
This procedure has a negative impact on behavior and will affected the way we treat others. Moral
absolutismis a moral view that certain actions are inherently right or wrong. Moral absolution, in
more depth, is a belief that there are established standards against moral questions that can be
judged and certain actions are considered right or wrong. Absolutism represents that ethicsand

Homelessness And Suicide Essay
Suicide and Homelessness
Homeless adults are committing suicide every day. Half of most suicides happen in men, ages 25
through 65, with the teenagers and women accounting with the other half. Based on the calculated
population, people commit suicide every 13.3 minutes (Peter Jon). Mental illness is the factor that
causes these deaths; mental illness refers to disorder that affects mood, thinking and behavior, this
is the most frequent cause for suicide. People who suffer from depression are impulsive and use
alcohol or drugs. Homeless adults who have mental disorders often commit suicide because of
depression, abandonment, and the lack of education.
Many human deaths are caused by depression, depression can be described by feeling sad,
unhappy, or miserable. Research has shown that 90 percent of people who kill themselves
suffered from depression, or another diagnosable mental or substance abuse disorder that leads
them to this horrible tragedy called suicide (Wilson). Depression can lead to suicide if its not
being treated, in the worst case. A harmful life event or events can lead to be a cause of a suicide
attempt. If your wife died and you feel like you ca not deal with it, you drown yourself into drugs
and drinking, you are left alone your children are now adults and are gone away somewhere
married and they can not come with you. So you continue to drown yourself, until you do not have
any more money and you go homeless, you then think and start talking to yourself

seasons are typically on the warmer side regardless of lack of humidity. However, Floridian wet

Why Americans Should Learn a Second Language
The major languages in the United States are English, Spanish, and Chinese, with these last two
quickly gaining prominence, and about 17.9 percent of Americans speak a language other than
English at home. Keeping this in mind, it is almost essential today to learn a second language.
Being bi , tri or multilingual has many advantages, the more obvious being that one can
communicate with exchange students, immigrants, and fellow online gamers, chatters, and forum
users, as well as to bridge cultures and societies through lingual commonality and better
understanding. It also can give a person a fresh eye for their own society and culture, and even
improve understanding of the mechanics of one s own language, all by comparison.

If people don t understand you all you have to do is speak slowly and turn up the volume. You
can more or less get away with this, as long as you stick to popular tourist resorts and hotels
where you can usually find someone who speaks English. However, if you want to venture beyond
such places, to get to know the locals, to read signs, menus, etc, knowing the local language is
necessary.
Americans who travel abroad for the first time are often shocked to discover that, despite all the
progress that has been made in the last 30 years, many foreign people still speak in foreign
languages.
(Dave Barry)
A basic ability in a foreign language will help you to get by , i.e. to order food and drink, find
your way around, buy tickets, etc. If you have a more advanced knowledge of the language, you
can have real conversations with the people you meet, which can be very interesting and will add a
new dimension to your holiday.
Should foreign language instruction start earlier in the U.S.?
Abbott: It is critical that foreign language instruction be available to all students throughout their
PK 12 academic experience. Knowing other languages and understanding other cultures is a 21st
Century skill set for American students as they prepare to live and work in a global society. No

Essentially, the marketing manager will seek to understand how a competitive advantage may be

is one of the leading hotels in the world. Nevertheless, as a newer hotel in Melbourne, Hilton is
facing some serious challenges from competitors such as Grand Hyatt Melbourne and Sheraton

Meanwhile, Sheraton Melbourne Hotel will launch a new full service as part of a 2013

Teaching Methods Essay
1.Discuss the reasons for selecting the teaching methods used.
In the micro teach session delivered to my peers at college as part of an Assessment, I chose to use
the following teaching methods: * Initial assessment * Brainstorming * Group work *
Differentiation * Constructivist teaching.
Science is a practical subject that requires an academic approach. The methods used are to promote
active learning strategies that engage the student.
As I already teach at KS4, I assumed that this particular group would already be at the level of
teaching and learning in my class, although I did consider initial assessment methods in my
planning. I set out the learning objectives and learning outcomes so that each ... Show more content

One of the methods I used was to allow the students to share their knowledge with each other
through mind mapping and then through working together on a true /false questionnaire.
2.Critically discuss two of the teaching methods used and examine each one in terms of their
strengths and weaknesses.
The first method I would like to discuss is the constructivist approach an active way of building on
students knowledge, ensuring students use and apply the knowledge given. In my view this
method covers all the positive points for exploring a specific subject, by using the method of the
students building their own interpretations of the information given, as Petty explains: What does it
mean exactly to have a full grasp of a new topic, and to be able to use your learning successfully
even in new situations? (Petty 2004, p. 7), going on to explain the theory behind Bloom s
taxonomy, a hierarchy of learning and putting the attributes to learning in order. In simple terms,
the knowledge a student requires at the beginning is rather basic; then comprehending the
knowledge means that a student has been able to move on by understanding and explaining.
Once a student has comprehension they (with the help of a teacher) can apply that comprehension.
For example, during the micro teach session once I had given an overview of the heart, students
were able to complete a questionnaire. I could see from the answers that they had gained

Motion Picture Production Code
Ever since its first introduction in 1893, motion pictures have become a remarkably successful
medium that portray drama and arouse the audiences emotions. It allowed for the audience to
escape from the hassles of everyday life and immerse themselves into the world of the story s
narrative. From the 1920s to the 1960s, motion pictures began to dramatically develop, building on
the practices established from the previous years of film. Prior to this period, motion pictures were
only silent films. In 1927 and the early 1950s, the addition of sound and color began to
revolutionize film aesthetics and the industry as a whole. There was also the introduction of new
genres such as gangster films, westerns, and musical. Due the large volume of films... Show more

These guidelines came to be known as the Motion Picture Production Code. This Production Code
outlined for film studios and their motion pictures what was appropriate or inappropriate for a
public audience. The guidelines for this code were no film should lower the moral standards of its
audience, appropriate etiquette should be presented, and no ridicule of the law as well as no
presentation of violating it2. Under this code, content showing nudity, profanity, drug use, criminal
acts, etc. were banned3. By self imposing this code it addressed issues such as children being
exposed to indecent material or films influencing children to become violent or commit crimes.
Although the Production Code was strictly enforced at first, after a series of cases in 1952 the
Supreme Court recognized motion pictures as a form of expression entitled to constitutional
guarantees of freedom of speech (Bates, 1970, p. 620). Meaning that any direct intervention,
whether through prior restraints or censorship, would be unconstitutional. Consequently, film
producers and exhibitors began relaxing on the Production Code s

Melvin B. Tolson s The Great Debates

College Texas. In the year 1935, Mr. Melvin B. Tolson

first debateteam. The team made it all the way up to compete with Harvard in the national
championship, furthermore, Harvard was known as the best. The debate team was a team of four

that time. He sternly told them that his father was strip of his clothes with each leg tied to two

causing him to ripped apart. Basically he was telling them the slave masters take their minds but
kept their bodies. Therefore, they should keep their minds, especially being young and on the
debate team (Washington, Black, Forte, Roth, Winfrey, Eisele Porro, 2008). Denzel Washington
was graphic and serious while he was telling the students about his father. However, I believe he
had thought them a good lesson in the dialogue. I believe the moral of the dialogue is to keep your
mind regardless of what may happened in your life. Because if someone control your mind they
basically control your life, for example, the slaves. Nevertheless, Denzel Washington used
intercultural communication ethics which I think was good.
However, in another scene, Denzel Washington employs Public discourse ethics. Public discourse
ethics protects and promotes a place of conversation for diversity of ideas and persons (Arnett,
Fritz, Janie Bell, 2008). Moreover, Denzel Washington was in a secret and private barn with
approximately fifty five other men, they were African Americans, Hispanics as well as Caucasian.

I have read all four articles given in the assignment and familiarized myself with the concept of a
social institution from our textbook. Pay Gap Is Because Of Gender, Not Job is the title of the
article I chose. I identified the social institution in the article as economic .
Economic Institution
There are five common types of social institutions: economic, governmental, family, educational,
religious. They are the principal structures in all societies and relate to general factors of social life
and life overall. The chosen article relates to salary matter of males and females that is a part of the
economic institution.
General information
In the textbook Introduction to sociology stated that in sociology, economy refers to the social
institution through which a society s resources are exchanged and managed. In past years
economies were considered as a trade, i.e. a general exchange when people traded goods with each
other. Clearly, the modern economy is much more diverse and complex than simple transactions in
past yet the aim remains the same: to satisfy human needs and wants we exchange products and
services. (400)

Software Patent Law Essay
Software Patent Law
A patent can be defined as a legal document granted by the government giving an inventor the
exclusive right to make, use, and sell an invention for a specified number of years. 1 These special
rights are given to the inventor as a means of incentive to further advance technology. The origins of
patents are unknown, though the distinction of the longest continuous patent system belongs to
Great Britain. The British patent system originated in the 15th century, when the Crown first started
dealing with the granting of privileges to manufacturers and traders. The earliest known British
patent was issued in 1449 for a method of making stained glass.2

How do U.S. and European policies affect the global perspective on patenting software?
In the sections that follow, the policies of the U.S. and Europe will be analyzed to see how these
ethical questions may be answered.
Background Information: Governing Bodies
Up until recent times, the organization of the global patent system has simply been that each
country has their own patent laws and offices. These offices deal with their own domestic patent
filings, as well as those of foreigners seeking protection against infringement in that particular
country. Manufacturers have come to embrace the idea of distributing their goods to the world
market; so as globalization grows, so does the need for international patents.
In 1973, thirteen European countries signed the European Patent Convention (EPC), with the
objective of developing a uniform patent system (the European Patent Organisation) in order to
make patent protection in Europe easier and less costly. Four years later, the European Patent
Office (EPO) was founded as the executive branch of the Organisation. The EPO currently has
twenty seven member countries, and is still expecting more to join. Though the EPO does include
all fifteen members of the European Union (EU), it is important to note that the EPO is not
governed by the EU.3 Each country still maintains its own patent office and applies its own laws.
However, since the goal of the EPO is to harmonize

  • 2. The American Filipino War And The Filipino Revolution Essay The American Filipino war, the Filipino Revolution, the Filipino Insurrection, whatever name you give to the armed conflict between America and the Philippines that occurred at the end the eighteenth century and the beginning of the nineteenth century, it happened and it stays as a footnote on both America s history and the Philippines history. This war, or how my friend humorously called it, A chain of war atrocities , ended in the Americans favor. However, the question stands, did the Filipino forces ever stand a chance against the Americans? Also, did the Filipino war help the Filipinos get what they wanted all along, Filipino Independence? For the former, you have to look at the belligerents on both sides as well as their tactics along with the reasons of why my friend called the conflict a chain of war atrocities rather than a war; for the latter, you must instead look at the different states the Philippines was in after the war leading up to its independence in order to find out if the American Filipino war acted as a factor. Philippines for a long time could be considered the Russia of the Pacific. Nations just kept on coming to conquer them. However, unlike Russia, the Philippines failed to keep its independence every single time. After America, Japan came and took over for a while. Before America, the Spanish occupied the Philippines. Ferdinand Magellan was a Portuguese explorer who had a mission, to circumnavigate the world. His ship and crew would follow him ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Blackrock Essay Blackrock Major Essay Assignment Blackrock by Nick Enright is a drama piece constructed to challenge dominant social ideology of twentieth century Australian youth. The text presents a very critical attitude towards Australian society in particular the notion of mateship is criticised and exposed in a negative light, as are the justifications, and outcomes of youth independence, and the marginalisation of females. Blackrock, being inspired/based on a the real life rape and murder of schoolgirl Leigh Leigh (in Stockton, near Newcastle, Australia on 3 November 1989), provides powerful, direct, criticism of dominant Australian (male) youth culture, and highlights how seemingly harmless attitudes and ideologies can lead to the most severe ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In such a contrast the writer is criticising the submissiveness of the female population, and conveying the concept of fighting for your rights and defending your beliefs as does Cherie. Tiffany s boyfriend Ricko, who is the dominant male in the Blackrock youth group, clearly objectifies Tiffany through the symbolic use of his surfing trophy, representative of Tiffany, through his eyes she is just a trophy, just an object which he desired and thus conquered. Ricko s objectification of her is reinforced through the dialogue, Once, for him and Jason...I m not doing nothing like that ever again, to which Ricko replies , You ll do what you always do...Cause you are what you are. What you ll always be. So shut up and put out. Ricko s mind set and personality are evident through this cruel and contemptuous verbal abuse, which demonstrates his objectification of her, in that he only tolerates her for her body to satisfy his sexual lust and that she is useless in every other way to him. Tiffany s character was created by Enright to be a perfect example of female marginalisation and disempowerment, as she really has no power within the Blackrock community and even in her attempts to assume rapport she is rejected Her promiscuity is an attempt to gain status in the Blackrock community yet she is abused and objectified by her boyfriend Ricko and pushed even lower in social status(as a sex object), essentially the ... • 4. St Thomas Aquinas Research Paper ST. Thomas Aquinas was a philosopher who was born in 1225 and has strongly influenced the academic and theological fields since then. He studied under Alfred the Great when he joined the Dominican order. After he graduated he went on to teach in Bologna, Paris, Rome, Cambridge, and Cologne. Surprisingly he came up from a aristocratic family and was the son of a wealthy banker, the story goes that he decided to join the Dominican order, so his family locked him away for a year trying to persuade him from joining. Thomas Aquinass most famous work was the Summa Theologica, it is a brief overview of all the questions and answers explained in the vast Summa Contra Gentiles. However his works are not limited to just the Summa Contra... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For years Thomas Aquinas devoted all his time and energy to accomplish the Summa Theologica, but unfortunately he never finished it. The story went that he had a vision while he was sleeping and when he awoke he professed that all of his works were mere straw compare to what he envisioned. One of his best know works is the potentiality and actuality theory, potentiality is the concept that anything has the potential to be in a specific place or do a specific action, but the actuality is the object being moved from its original state to its new state of being. For example, if an spoon was sitting on a table, it has the potential to be moved to the counter, but the actuality part would be me or someone moving that spoon on the counter. What a lot of people don t understand is that he isn t making the argument that the universe had to have some form of actuality to be created because if he did someone else could make the argument that God had to have something actualize him in order to be in ... • 5. A Soft Drink Tax According to John Stuart Mill The Justification for a Soft Drink Tax The Coca Cola brand has built itself into a staple of American culture. This is a terrifying thought for public health advocates who see Coke and other soft drinks as being major culprits behind a growing national health crisis. Empirical evidence shows that over consumption of soft drinks clearly causes harm to the individuals who consume them, however, the waging battle over soda legislation will not be won on the grounds of health alone. The argument that Coca Cola, Pepsi, and other soft drink firms present is deeply rooted in American values and cannot easily be trumped. What they argue for is freedom of choice. In his book On Liberty, John Stuart Mill states, over himself, over his own body ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Therefore, in order to present a stronger argument for a ban on soft drinks, advocates would do well to prove that in drinking soda pop, individuals cause harm not only to themselves, but also to others. To consume soft drinks to the point of excess can lead to the deterioration of an individual s health. This may appear to be a self regarding action until one considers the cost such individuals impose on taxpayers. Citizens whose unhealthy lifestyles regularly land them in the hospital eat up government health care, at which point their actions cease to be self regarding and become harmful to society at large. With this in mind, are we still to protect individuals liberty to drink soda pop? Soft drink firms may point to Mill in arguing that the accountability for such harm lies not with soda, but with the society that raises gluttonous individuals. If grown people are incapable of properly taking care of themselves, society must consider that it has had absolute power over them during all the early portion of their existence; it has had the whole period of childhood and nonage in which to try whether it could make them capable of rational conduct in life (80). It is on this point that we must consider the role that mass media plays in the world today. The pervasiveness of corporate advertising in the U.S. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Reflective Commentary On Alison Bechdel s Fun Home Creative Response Reflective Commentary I reworked Daniel Defoe s Roxana in the graphic novel style of Alison Bechdel s Fun Home. Initially, the reason I chose the two novels was to see how well the oldest text on the course could be adapted into the newest. Interestingly the texts proved to be quite similar in narrative; both are versions of autobiography (although one fictional and one true), both feature a retrospective first person, self conscious narrator (Booth 155), and both centre around a female protagonist deviating from societal norms of the time. Fittingly enough Roxana also mentions her father in the beginning, although she leaves him dead quite quickly. Adapting a novelinto a graphic novel is a drastic stylistic change, and my biggest concern was to keep my adaption steadily tied with the two texts, whilst trying not to get too carried away in the creative process. I based my process of making the comic on an interview with Alison Bechdel, where she explains how she planned the text in Adobe Illustrator, sketched and inked by hand, and finally rendered the panels digitally ( Alison Bechdel ). Like Bechdel, I relied extensively on Google images for various details of 17th ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The italicised words and German capitalization gets lost in the all caps form of the graphic novel, yet something lingers in terms of autonomy of the author. It has a disregard of normal stylistic considerations affected not only by Defoe as a writer but also a progress towards a more factual prose in the late seventeenth century (Watt 105). Nowadays, the fixed structure of grammar allows for little waywardness in format, apart from in the graphic novel. Like Defoe, the individual artist has a certain freedom of choice, affected only by general conventions, of where to place the text and how to guide the reader it is an interesting case of a rare anarchic individuality in ... • 7. Flaws In Othello Essay Research Essay: Othello by William Shakespeare Was Othello a victim of circumstances or his own flaws? by Alijaeh Go 9B4 First performed in the court of King James I on November 1 1604, The Tragedy of Othello: The Moor of Venice was written by William Shakespeare between 1601 and 1604. The basic premise of the play is the protagonist s (Othello s) marriage with the daughter of the senator, Desdemona: Their marriage, unfortunately, is sabotaged by the envious Iago, insinuating to Othello of his wife s alleged infidelity. The play reaches its climactic peak when the general s jealousy vows to exact bloody revenge on the perpetrators (Desdemona and Cassio) that caused him to be a cuckold . All of Iago s schemes come into fruition when the noble Moor smothers his wife to death: The play spirals further downhill with most of the cast either dead, severely injured or in Iago s case, on the process to be tortured. Based from this summary, a mere observer would conclude that the reason for Othello s downfall is his hamartia his incessant jealousy that caused for his rash actions. However, with the 15th guaranteeing the vote only to African American men, and the subsequent abandonment of former allies like Fredrick Douglas, the two founded the National Women s Suffrage Association. One specific challenge the hero must face is described as the Supreme Ordeal, which is the moment the greatest fear is confronted. In The Odyssey, Odysseus must killthe suitors who took over his household to reach the next stage of his journey. As Odysseus slaughters the suitors in the hall of his home in Book 22, not only does he enter the Supreme Ordeal stage of the Hero s Journey to face his greatest fear, but also is one phase closer to reintegrating with society. While earlier books in The Odyssey describe Odysseus fear in his own words, Book 22 is the first incident in which his fear is physically both described and displayed. This display of fear is further expressed when Athena as Mentor asks Odysseus, Where s it gone, Odysseus your power, your fighting heart? (22.236) This question not only represents the great fear circulating through the hero in the moment, but also symbolizes his hitting bottom. Athena, once greatly praising the courage of Odysseus, hit new heights of rage (22.234) when he became overcome with fear as more suitors and enemies gathered in the hall, waiting to kill him. Athena then goes as far as to mock the fear that overcame Odysseus when she states now you ve returned to your own house, your own wealth / bewail the loss of your combat strength in a war with suitors? (22.242 243) This emphasis on suitors shows both their inner weakness and the disgust Athena has towards them, giving Odysseus the advantage in the slaughter. This advantage is demonstrated when six of the suitors attempt to attack Odysseus and his comrades with spears, but Athena sent the whole salvo wide of the mark (22.269). Immediately after, Odysseus and his comrades return the attack and successfully kill four of the opposing men. After another round of slaughtering success, Odysseus begins to overcome the fear of the Supreme Ordeal. This fear is not lost; however, for it is turned around and placed on the remaining suitors by Athena when she terrifies the suitors out of their minds, and down the hall they panicked / wild, like herds stampeding, driven mad as the darting gadfly / strikes in the late spring when the ling days come round (22.313 315). This vagueness between BA and BPM roles creates confusion in practice and academia, which impacts on role designs, skills assessment, human resource development, recruitment and professional development. The impact of such was made clear at a Leonardo Process Days 2010 conference panel where BA and BPM role differentiation was reviewed. An outcome of this discussion was a consensus that i) Practitioners struggle to recognise and articulate the skills required (BA, BPM or both?) for various organisational initiatives and how to locate appropriate talent to fill these roles ii) Academics fail to position BA and BPM as separate professions and often bundle them as the same in their course descriptions and marketing iii) Students and prospective candidates for employment vacancies therefore remain confused about the specific skill sets required of a BPM professional a nd/ or a Business Analyst. • 16. Lord Of The Flies Evil Character Analysis In William Golding s novel Lord of The Flies he shows how evil exists inside of everyone, it is the situation a person finds themselves in allows evil to grow or be controlled. The three boys are an example of this. Jack who only thinks about himself he wants everything immediately which makes his evil grow. Ralph, however, thinks about others but at times can be selfish which can make his evil grow, but Ralph tries to keep his evil at bay. Simon on the other hand only thinks about others, he does not think about himself which stops his evil from arising. Therefore, controlof the situation is control of evil self. To begin with Jack, Jack wants power and leadership. The situation Jack is in makes his evil grow. Jack is letting the situation control him which is increasing the evil inside of him. The evil inside him is making him more selfish and violent. For example, at the starting of the novel when Jack had failed to kill the pig he cries to Ralph, [Jack] tried to convey the compulsion to track down and kill that was swallowing him up. I went on. I thought, by myself The madness came into his eyes again. I thought I might kill. (Golding 51). The quote shows how at the starting of the novel Jack had good inside of him as he had feared killing an animal which makes sense as he is a kid. This shows that Jack was not evil from the beginning. But the situation and atmosphere increase the evil inside of him when he says, I thought I might kill this shows how the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 17. Analysis Of Isaiah Berlin s Two Concepts Of Liberty In Two Concepts of Liberty , Isaiah Berlin examines two different conceptions of freedom: positive and negative liberty. He begins by discussing negative freedom, which he defines as the area within which the subject ... is or should be left to do or be what he is able to do or be, without interference by other persons (169). Under this definition, an individual is not free if he is coerced by another individual from making a decision he or she would naturally make. When discussing negative freedom, Berlin acknowledges that there is a fundamental level of freedom that is necessary for personal development that should not be intruded on by others (174). He contrasts this conception of negative freedom with positive freedom, which is concerned with the source of control or interference that can determine someone to do, or be, this rather than that (169). When discussing positive freedom, Berlin introduces the concept of the divided self, where an individual has two selves, a higher, rational self and a lower, instinctual self (180). Positive freedom focuses on the ability to develop the self mastery over the lower self and appeals to the higher self. Berlin argues that the positive conception of liberty is flawed because the concept of appealing to the higher self can be abused when the idea of a higher and lower self is applied to a collective group or society (181). An authoritarian government can use the rhetoric of appealing to an individual s or group s higher self to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 18. Social Order In Elizabethan England For my research project, I am focusing on social order in Elizabethan England and how the Great Chain of Being might have affected that order. Marjorie K. McIntosh s Poverty, Charity, and Coercion in Elizabethan England highlights how the upperclass gave assistance to the lower classes because their Christian faith guided them to do so. However, A. L. Beier s Vagrants and the Social Order in Elizabethan England takes a more cynical approach to the issue of social order and argues that the poor vagrants were not given widespread assistance. Although Beier and McIntosh disagree upon the extent to which the poor were given assistance and the upper class s views of the lower classes, they are similar in that they both acknowledge that the only... McIntosh s article covers how members of the upper class helped vagrants, the steps that the government took to help the impoverished, and how the members of the lower class responded to aid. Throughout her article, McIntosh s sources of evidence include other scholarly articles, census information, and population studies, but she also repeatedly cites her own works. In her article, McIntosh reflects upon the difficulties of providing enough aid to the poor, and she concludes this article by stating that many government officials had to figure out how to balance genuine religious and social concern for the poor with the need to maintain order and discipline, and how to do so without inordinate expense (479). Despite the desire to help the needy, there were many difficulties in providing aid, and the devotion to the Great Chain of Being s strict economic divisions prevented members of the upper class and the government from deviating from the norm and helping the poor vagrants. • 20. Advantages And Disadvantages Of The Medical Model 1.The medical model approach describes mental illness as a function caused by genetics that is passed down to each individual. The medical model defines mental illness as a biological disease that is caused by malfunctioning neurophysiological process. The DSM 5 is used in the medical model as a classification system of psychological disorders to help the clinician diagnosis and treat mental illnesses. There are strengths and limitations of focusing on the medical model and the use of the DSM when working with clients. The strengths when working with clients on a medical model perspective is that the use of the DSM provides a common language to use in the medical community. The DSM provides reliability and structural guideline to each mental disorder. The structural guidelines in the DSM provide an organized list of criteria and specifiers to help determine the severity of the mental disorder. When diagnosing a client, there are many similar signs and symptoms to each mental disorder; thus, the DSM provides the clinician information about differential diagnosis, prevalence, possible co morbidity, age of onset, and progressive development of symptoms. Hence, focusing on the medical model and using the DSM can be beneficial to both the client and the clinician providing treatment. Nonetheless, there are limitations associated with the medical model and the DSM. These limitations include focusing on the symptoms rather than focusing on other factors in the ... Reflective Assignment This paper discusses my experiences after attending the Practice of Public Health Leadership (PPHL) subject in 2015, reflecting on important lessons learnt, the relevance to my work and the support required for my improvement. When I enrolled in this PPHL, I was not sure that I will get the best out of the subject due to previous experiences of attending theoretical leadership trainings. However, at the end of the subject, I was challenged, groomed, humbled and inspired as a leader. The subject has helped more to bring a lot out of myself, stimulated the urge for personal authenticity and an appreciation of the power of vulnerability in leadership. Through personal interactions with other students and presenters as well as the group activities, I have realised that the success of the team depends on recognising each other s strengths and complementing on the weaknesses. In addition, I have learnt that effective leadership depends on team work, incorporating people with different skills and abilities. I have learnt the importance of personal reflection and meditation in leadership. Furthermore, taking time to know myself or who I am, has been one of the great lessons from this subject. It has enabled me to focus on the roles of a leader instead of striving to do everything myself as the case before. In addition, learning the skills of gaining the trust of the people you are leading as well as inspiring them was a remarkable lesson. Reflecting on my ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

He states that What is now called the nature of women is an artificial thing the result of the forced repression in some directions, unnatural stimulation in others. [152] In other words Mill is stating that the subjection of women is something that has been ingrained in society for so long that is custom. Even the ones who are oppressed, which are women, in this case, will even start to believe it, (which is why they might prefer being housewives). Mill uses this argument to explain that custom is the reason for the subjection of women and not the so called natural differences. To conclude this point, Mill argued that the inequality of women was a relic from the past , and had no place in the modern world. [150] This supports the notion that he was, in fact, a feminist. He believed that women should be on an equal playing field with men and that having effectively half the human race unable to contribute to society is a hindrance to human development . • 38. Farewell Speech For Farewell Honorable Members of the head table, dear teachers, beloved parents, friends and guests all very good night. Is a great honor and a great responsibility to express through a few words the feelings of an entire group being completed a stage, which covers a myriad of experiences and emotions that even the most beautiful words are insufficient to express them. This path was not easy, we had to face disillusionments, disappointments, sorrows, sacrifice outings and many times even friends and family, several times we wanted to throw in the towel and give up; but we did not, we rose up in the face of adversity, learned from them and went forward, because as Mario Benedetti says the glory is not in never falling, but rather on the times you may need to get up . There were moments of distress as well as moments of plenitude; we met people that over time we called classmates, to then call them friends. People that marked our lives and that will surely marked theirs, we have learned something from each one of you, because everyone is different. • 40. Pork Production in the United States In recent years, pork production has become a big business in the United States. In the past, the raising of swine was handled by small farming operations. Today, however, pigs are raised in large factories, some of which have the capacity to hold more than 100,000 animals (Lynch 14). This has created problems in terms of handling large amounts of excremental waste. These problems recently became evident in the state of North Carolina. A few years ago, North Carolina became the primary location for large scale hog raising operations. In particular, large companies like Coharie Hog Farm and Murphy Family Farms began locating along the eastern side of Interstate 95. This area was found to be suitable for hog farming because it is a coastal plain where the land is flat, the rivers wide and human habitation scattered ( The Brown Lagoon 24). The state of North Carolina was also favorable for large scale swine operations because there was a lack of laws regulating that type of business. In order to ensure their ability to operate without being heavily regulated, the major swine companies in North Carolina donated huge amounts of money to the leading politicians in the state. Thus, the major swine farmers were able to gain a sense of immunity as a result of their powerful political connections. At the same time, the state s leading politicians tended to encourage such operations because they were providing employment and thus improving the overall economic welfare of ... Her disappearance in 1937 during an attempt to revolve the globe devastated admirers across the United States and around the world. Her public career lasted less than a decade starting at 1928 and ending in 1937. She used her fame to promote two causes dear to her: the advancement of commercial aviation and the advancement of women. Earhart symbolizes the fascination that aviation held for Americans in the 1920s and 1930s. Aviator Amelia Earhart was born on July 24, 1897 in Atchison, Kansas. And when they fail, their failure should be a challenge to others. Earhart was legally declared dead in 1939. Earhart s entire life had a certain restless quality. By 1928, she had found a calling of sorts as a social worker in Boston who flew in her spare time. When New York publisher George Palmer Putnam asked if she wanted to be the first woman to fly the Atlantic, she agreed. June of 1928 Amelia flew from Newfoundland to Burry Port, Wales, made her an instant celebrity, although she was quick to note that she had been merely a passenger, a sack of potatoes, who kept the log. When she flew solo in the Atlantic during 1932, another first for women, she proved to the world and, more important, to herself that 1928 had not been an accident. Amelia did not have many supporters in the beginning, during this time women were not believed to have a role as such a pilot like Amelia did. • 42. The Life of the Famous Author Charles Dickens Charles Dickens was born in Portsmouth, England, on February 7, 1812, to John and Elizabeth Dickens. He was the second of eight children. His mother had been in service to Lord Crew, and his father worked as a clerk for the Naval Pay office. John Dickens was imprisoned for debt when Charles was young. Charles Dickenswent to work at a blacking warehouse, managed by a relative of his mother, when he was twelve, and his brush with hard times and poverty affected him deeply. He later recounted these experiences in the semi autobiographical novel David Copperfield. Similarly, the concern for social justice and reform which surfaced later in his writings grew out of the harsh conditions he experienced in the warehouse. As a young boy, Charles Dickens was exposed to many artistic and literary works that allowed his imagination to grow and develop considerably. He was greatly influenced by the stories his nursemaid used to tell him and by his many visits to the theater. Additionally, Dickens loved to read. Among his favorite works were Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes, Tom Jones by Henry Fielding, and Arabian Nights, all of which were picaresque novels composed of a series of loosely linked adventures. This format no doubt played a part in Dickens idea to serialize his future works. Dickens was able to leave the blacking factory after his father s release from prison, and he continued his education at the Wellington House Academy. Although he had little formal schooling, ... • 43. The Hero s Journey By Joseph Campbell THESIS The main points of the hero s journey by Joseph Campbell is the basis of most stories throughout history, Divergent and The Epic of Gilgamesh being prime examples. PURPOSE These stories follow the format of the hero s journey because it shadows the steps that Campbell explained. In his study of world hero myths Campbell discovered that they are all basically the same story retold endlessly in infinite variations (Vogler). Campbell s idea of this journey that all heroes complete is present in the duration of most stories that have been told throughout history and in modern day works today. INTRODUCTION Throughout these stories the steps of the Hero s Journey are found to move the story along. Beatrice and Gilgamesh were both called to fulfill their destiny becoming the heroes of their own stories, fighting for what they thought was right, and bringing their society into a position of security. Society today is using this method with or without trying making this route able to touch the author in a more personal way, his archetypal development of characters and the exposition of a portion of his own personal Hero s Journey illustrated through the protagonist s Hero s Journey. In my view this method covers all the positive points for exploring a specific subject, by using the method of the students building their own interpretations of the information given, as Petty explains: What does it mean exactly to have a full grasp of a new topic, and to be able to use your learning successfully even in new situations? These offices deal with their own domestic patent filings, as well as those of foreigners seeking protection against infringement in that particular country.
