F. Scott Fitzgerald s The Barn
Sadly, Ruth all but knows that she stays because Paul is white. She is still so ashamed of the event that
she wants to cleanse her blackness and dirtiness with Paul s whiteness and cleanliness. The binary
oppositions that have been passed on from white American culture to black American culture have
claimed another victim and Ruth is left to deal with her emotional scarring alone. Paul s touch would
never release her...whenever he touched her, she became blacker and dirtier than ever...[but] her
blackness was not Paul s fault. Neither was her guilt. She was punishing herself for something, a
crime she could not remember. You dirty...you black and dirty... (Baldwin). She wants very much to be
content with being a black woman in America, who has no reason to feel shame for being sexual, but
the event in the barn weighs heavily on her at all times. She is so desperate to be cleansed by way of
Paul s whiteness that she will not leave a toxic, unfulfilling, nearly one sided relationship. Instead, she
goes to work every day and seethes, thinking about what conquest he might acquire in her absence.
Ruth s issues with her race and sexuality also come to the fore in the office, as she shares her coffee
breaks with her female coworkers. While all the other office girls are whispering and conspiring over
the marvelous Mr. Davis, their black superior, Ruth is contemplating her mixed race relationship and
the unlikelihood that Mr. Davis would take up a gossipy office girl. Ruth, though

Revolution, heaven slowly turns into hell, and at the end of the play two revolutionary guards stand in
front of Lu s dead body, talking about how thin he looks.
Mr. Big recently completed its four day debut, from from March 31 to April 3, in at the National
Theatre Company of China, and caused enthusiastic compliments as well as fierce criticism in Beijing.
Mr. Big is about Lu Xun (1881 1936), widely recognized as the most important litterateur, and one of
the most influential figures in Chinese modern history. After the 1919 May Fourth Movement, of
which he was one of the leaders, Lu Xun began to exert a substantial influence on Chinese literature
and culture. His best known works, Call to Arms (1922) and Wandering (1925), show the
extraordinary gift of treading a fine line between criticizing the follies of his characters and
sympathizing with those very follies.

Abortion Issues In The United States
Important ways of analyzing the abortion issue in the United States can be categorized into five
classifications: government legislature, birth control conflicts, women s rights, religion, and the issue
of conception and origin of life. Based on moral or preliminary allegations in support of strict or less
oppressive abortion laws developed in America, separates millions of people. While advocates of
abortion proclaim the procedure as constitutional, the issue continues to separate politicians by their
political parties, the liberals Democrats being pro choice and the conservative Republicans being pro
life. The media paints abortion as a moral issue, discussing it from both liberal and conservative
angles. Various opinions may be claimed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The war on women is not just about TRAP laws and abortion. It is about the government preventing
women from receiving basic health services. In February of 2012, the state of Texas cut off
reproductive health services to more than 130,000 low income women. The amount of anti women
regulations in the past two years has been a record breaking number a record which hurts hundreds of
women. When it pertains to women s health, the Republican presidential candidates are trying to
remodel America after Texas example. In refusing health services to women, Texas, as well as, other
states jeopardize women s health and increase the risk of unwanted pregnancies. Republican Party
members are not just attacking abortion, but also access to birth

Tricking And Tripping Claire Sterk Summary
Claire E. Sterk s article Tricking and Tripping: Fieldwork on Prostitution in Era of AIDS published by
Social Change Press in 2000 takes into account the patterns and procedures that anthropologists take
into practice during fieldwork. She provides some useful insights and learnt lessons during her studies
with prostitutes. She also provides a close and intimate account of their lives and mental state in their
own words. Her findings are substantiated with proper examples in the accounts of the daily lives of
these women. Unlike most student s expectation of fieldwork as a leisure activity at some serene
place, Sterk observes the pain associated with the lifestyle and brings into light some important
patterns and procedures that anthropologists must consider while interviewing a research group. Sterk
establishes her point of view about importance of general study of culture by provoking the essential
human quality of compassion. She does so by describing the prostitutes as not alien and showing fine
human qualities. Their habitual formations and mental qualities are like other ordinary humans. She
emphasizes this theme by highlighting a poem written by a prostitute. The whole purpose of this initial
exercise is to create consideration among readers about the lives and activities of prostitutes. ... Show

The relevance of this study is greatly highlighted by its placement in a time when AIDS was becoming
more and more of an epidemic. During this time period prostitutes were seen as one of the greatest
carriers of the disease, this lead to them being looked down upon greatly by the majority of society.
When Sterk observed these women in their time of leisure and shows the aspects of their personality
outside their line of work it humanized the women and displayed that they were merely people who

Walden As A Mirror, Walden
Reflections: Walden as a Mirror, Walden as a Lens
When Henry David Thoreau went to Walden Pond on July 4, 1845, he had no way of knowing that
200 years later, Walden would be required reading for anyone with even a passing interest in
American literature, environmental literature, or intentional living. But Walden is so much more than
the story of one man s retreat into the woods to transact some private business. Thoreau s disarming
directness and naturalistic style aside, Walden not an incidental text. With extensive revisions,
distilling a little over two years into one, every chapter, sentence and word of Walden has a purpose
and place. Renaissance sculptor Michelangelo is credited with saying, Every block of stone has a

In fact, aside from a brief reference to the cycle of the seasons, where Thoreau says that he lived a
summer and a winter life; saw how [he] could let the years run off, buffet the winter through and see
the spring come in, this chapter gains seasonal association through the knowledge that Thoreau went
to Walden in the summer. The Ponds brings us explicitly into autumn progressing from a calm
September afternoon, to such a day in September or October, to a November after the severe frosts
have come. The Pond in Winter brings the seasonal theme into the title and finally the culmination of,
Spring. Where I Lived, and What I Lived For begins Walden s central narrative. Economy addresses
the practicalities and the surface narrative, but Where I Lived, and What I Lived For lays out the
groundwork for the extended metaphor that serves as Walden s symbolic backbone. Time is but the
stream I go a fishing in, I drink at; but while I drink I see the sandy bottom and detect how shallow it
is. Its thin current slides away, but eternity remains. I would drink deeper; fish in the sky, whose
bottom is pebbly with stars, Thoreau tells us at the end of the chapter. This quote illustrates two
concepts that recur again and again in Walden. First, the idea of water as simultaneously shallow and
deep. Thoreau first proclaims that he can see the bottom of the stream but then elaborates, implying
that there is something beyond the

Commentary on the Bat by Roethke
Aliona Fezoua My Expert Commentary The Bat Theodore Roethke: By day the bat is cousin to the
mouse. He likes the attic of an aging house. His fingers make a hat about his head. His pulse beat is so
slow we think him dead. He loops in crazy figures half the night Among the trees that face the corner
light. But when he brushes up against a screen, We are afraid of what our eyes have seen: For
something is amiss or out of place When mice with wings can wear a human face. Theodore Roethke s
poem The Bat clearly focuses on the animal the bat and effectively conveys through the latter an
important message to the reader. One could interpret this poem in various ways; however a prominent
theme would be that every ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By comparing the bat s depiction during both day and night, Roethke may be trying to convey that the
bat is actually no more than a simple and peaceful being, which has been wrongly portrayed for years.
From another point of view, the author could be wanting to convey, through the image of a bat, that
everyone has a dark side . Roethke ingeniously does so in the final line of the poem with the latter s
twist metaphorical ending; when mice with wings can wear a human face (Roethke, 10). As previously
discussed, bats are usually associated with slyness and darkness, by making the bat wear a human face
, Roethke is trying to express that bats can sometimes resemble humans and vice versa. Ultimately,
humans can also sometimes wear a bat face and have a darker side. The author also gives the poem a
very descriptive tone through a significant amount of imagery. For example, the metaphor; his fingers
make a hat about his head (Roethke, 3), provides a detailed description of the bat s upper body in such
a way that the reader is able to picture the bat as what Roethke wants him/her to picture it as. One
could also infer that the author may again be trying to make the connection between bat and man;
since men wear hats and not bats. Another metaphor would be; by day the bat is cousin to the mouse
(Roethke, 1). Of course, mouse

Foster Care System
According to the 2015 Adoption and foster care Analysis and reporting system (AFCARS), 427,910
children were in the US foster care, making foster care one of the social issues in the USA. The US
Department of Health and Human services (HHS) is working on this social issue for past few years,
but is still not getting positive results every year population of Foster care is increasing by 50,000
youths. The statistics about the Foster care system is changing every day. Some things that people don

And when children are abused, the foster care system came up to help. Foster families provide a home
for children who have been abandoned, neglected or abused. These children are in need of nurturing
families who will help them heal and grow ( Be a Foster or Adoptive Parent ). If the Foster care
system was not in this world, then today billion of children would be homeless or died, so that s why
the world need Foster Care. When children are abused or neglected by their parents, or when the
parents cannot for any of a number of reasons care for their children, someone must intervene to see
that the children are adequately looked after. That someone is usually the government, and the

laws for parents to give the children protection, shelter, and food etc (Grounds for Involuntary

The Handmaids Tale
Deisy Monterrozo English 101 S26487 Fall 2017 September 20, 2017 The Handmaids Tale Margaret
Atwood s novel, The Handmaid s Tale, is a future version of the United States. Atwood introduces
Offred as a handmaid in the Republic of Gilead. Handmaids are assigned to bear children for couples
who have trouble conceiving. Offred serves the commander and his wife, Serena Joy. Offred s
freedom is completely restricted. She can only leave the house on shopping trips, the door of her room
cannot be completely shut, and the Eyes, Gilead s secret police force, watch her every public move.

Serena Joy, she used to be a powerful woman, but Galilea s government seems without freedom or
choice. She worked as a gospel singer and anti feminist activist and crusader for traditional values in
Pre Gilead times. After that, she used to give speeches as a television personality who promoted an
anti feminist about the sanctity of the home she was advocating the women return to the home and
submission to their husbands. Now, she s the commander s wife. Atwood makes it obvious how
unhappy she is in the current domestic situation, acting as a wife, she is broken inside. This
unhappiness derives from the restrictive and male dominated society. Gilead s society cannot bring
happiness even to its most powerful women. Only men have the freedom of reading, and while he is in
the room he opens the Bible and reads a verse that Serena Joy is identified with, Give me children, or
else I die. Am I in God s stead, who hath withheld from thee the fruit of the womb? Behold my maid
Bilhah. She shall bear fruit upon my knees, that I may also have children by her. (88) This verse in the
bible is talking about how she wants to bear children. In Gilead, they make their people believe that if
they cannot have children, then they should die. If Serena could not bear children, she will be sent to
the colonies to die. Atwood shows us that Offred has not freedom of choice and she

Difference Between Mac And Pc
Difference between Mac and Pc
The world we live in today is getting very radical changes since the invention of computer. And from
time to time lots of changes have come in this field. Mac and Pc is the most popular computer. They
both have some different feature from each other in contrast software and hardware. Let s start with
knowing what exactly these two computers are.
Mac
Macintosh or mostly known as Mac was invented by Apple Company in January 24, 1984. Steve jobs
invented Mac, and since that the development towards its new versions continued and it has achieved
an unique basement in the modern technology of computers.

While they both have the same internal parts such as the Ram, Processor, Hard Drive etc. the speed
and capacity of these components vary. Macs will generally outperform low end PCs, because the
Apple product lines typically boast more expensive and better quality parts. Comparing Macs with
higher end PCs is a little more difficult. Generally, though, Macs have faster processors than their
Windows counterparts but tend to skimp slightly when it comes to RAM, hard disk space and USB
ports.
The kinds of connections and optical drives found on Macs and PCs also differ in certain ways. Macs
offer a pretty standard selection of such features, including a SuperDrive (reads and writes CDs and
DVDs), audio in and audio out, USB, FireWire (data transfer), Thunderbolt (video output), Ethernet,
and a magnetized power port. PCs offer comparable features, plus a few more, like Blu ray players,
TV tuners, touch screens and HDMI ports.
Graphics: One of the most Attracted feature in any computer is the Graphics Hardwares and both Mac
and PC has filled up their customers desires. The Mac uses Intel Irish graphic. It gives high quality
multimedia experience. Some of pc company also introducing Irish graphics in their hardware. This

United States Aggression Against Islam
United States aggression against Islam:
As noted above, the main goal of al Qaeda propaganda is to convince the Muslim world (ummah) that
the West is waging a war on (or conducting a crusade against) Islam. All of the detainees at
Guantanamo are Muslim, many were jailed without any involvement with al Qaeda, the Taliban, or
militant behavior at all, (Fox News) and some abused. (Center for Constitutional Rights) These facts,
manipulated correctly and placed into a certain context, could be used to convince a susceptible
audience that the United States is operating the prison partially to persecute Muslim men, and as an
example of the US targeting Muslims generally.
Al Qaeda uses this imagined war as a rallying cry to convince a small minority in the Muslim world to
join its cause, as well as a justification for its actions casting them as a defensive jihad against the
enemies of the faith. In situations when the faith is attacked, according to Daveed Gartenstein Ross,
each Muslim has an individual obligation to join the battle ... this must be done by all Muslims, and as
Todd Helmus writes, Al Qaeda thus calls Muslims to Islam s defense. (121)
The Canadian Center for Intelligence and Security Studies report explains that, Al Qaeda s propaganda
portrays the current socio political system as one that oppresses and discriminates against Muslims,
who are the victims of an international world order dominated by the West the aggressor and enemy of
Islam. (ITAC

The combination of a carbonyl (C=O) group and hydroxyl (−OH) group on the same carbon atom

Benefit Of Technology Essay
The Abundant Benefits of Technology
On a daily basis, both businesses and individuals rely on technology. It cannot be denied that
technology has become part of our everyday life, as individuals we all depend on technology, either
for education, health purposes, transportation, communication, romantic relationships, and business
growth . It is impossible to explore how each advancement in technology has impacted our lives as
well as how it will impact the future. Technology impacts the environment, people individually, and
the society as a whole.
As we navigate through the 21st century, technology in the classroom is becoming further
predominant. iPads are replacing our textbooks, we can also research any desired topic on our
smartphones. The impact that technology has had on today s schools has been utterly momentous.
Educators have now seen firsthand the benefits of technology in the classroom. According to a study
by IT Trade Association CompTIA, around 75 percent of educators think that technology has a
positive impact on the education process. Educators also recognize the importance of developing these
technological skills in students so they will be prepared to enter the workforce after they graduate. By
incorporating technology in the classroom, teachers are setting our students up for a successful life
outside of school. The increase of technology has even changed how teachers teach along with
students learn. Teachers are learning how to teach with emerging

to their land than lives were going to be in jeopardy. Honi began to draw a circle on in the sand. He

Citizens United V. Federal Election Commission
Money is a form of payment in America, money has little to much value. It can be seen as a coin or as
paper, which has been issued legally by the government. Money can be used in exchange for certain
things a person or group desires. With money in peoples hands, it can drive them to make certain
decisions with much power. People in politics use a form of money to pay for their beliefs in the
United States of America. For many years, elections have been organized based on privately funded

The case Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission was to regulate the spendings of candidates
campaign, but it failed to succeed. The Supreme Court ruled 5 4 in the case of Citizens United v.
Federal Election Commission. (Bentley, 2017) The case was ruled in favor of big business donating
private funds to campaigns. They argued because the first amendment protects the right to speak of
many corporations and unions, whether or not people see them as human, therefore the are aloud to
donate money to a candidate. (Bentley, 2017) In the academic journal written by Bentley, he States the
Court majority (Justices Kennedy, Roberts, Alito, Scalia, and Thomas) argued, although government
has the authority to prevent corruption or the appearance of corruption, it has no place in determining
whether large political expenditures are either of those things, so it may not impose spending limits on
that basis. This meaning the government cannot enforce spending limits on private donors due to the
government not being able to identify the big businesses as corrupted . Since the government cannot
label an organization as corrupt or unjust, therefore the donor can continue to assist the candidate. The
main problem is the United States of America seems to avoid this. There is a clear problem with
Citizens United being able to continue donating money to candidates without giving them so much
power. This can be stopped through a constitutional amendment to strip away the corporations of their
rights. (Bentley, 2017) By doing this, there will be a very successful campaign for future candidates
due to there being an equal amount of money being distributed to them

He is always trying to protect his loved ones, and goes against his emotions to defeat his spiritual
mother, queen mab. Merlin is a wizard in training but is still able to use his powers. When he does
have the ability to use them, or has prophetic visions, he is able to make wise choices as to what to use
them for, such as saving Nimue, or using his vision of the dragons to know who is next in line for the
throne, rather that using his powers for evil and the upkeep of the old ways. Merlin is also a protective
person. In the movie, the adulterous lover of Lancelot was being burned at the stake for treason.
Mordred, Merlin s son, told Merlin to burn her at the stake, but, seeing how burning her was unfair, he
used his powers to make rain, putting out the fire, and saving the princess in the last second. Being
wise and protective are great personality traits, being headstrong is what allows him to defeat Queen
Mab and the evil ways. In the movie, he goes against all of his emotions and destroys the final
creatures of the pagan ways. He even ignores her when she tells him she loves him for the first time.

John Steinbeck s Life And Accomplishments
He was born February 7th, 1902 in Salinas, California. His mother Olive Hamilton had been a teacher,
and his father was John Ernst Steinbeck, who was a manager at the Sperry Flour mill. He had 3 sisters,
Esther, Beth and Mary. From the time he was 14, he wanted to be a writer. He wrote short stories
about where he lived. His father lost his job when John was a teenager, and his father tried opening a
feed grain store, but it failed. John went to Stanford University in 1919 (but stayed there for 6 years
without getting a degree). His father became Monterey county treasurer. He wrote these novels,

and more resistant to decomposition replaced previous species. (Hansen 2016) The accumulating peat
thus increased the deposition of bog iron and available supplies for Vikings to then transform into the
spears, axes, swords, helmets, and armor that they needed to conduct extensive raiding of settlements
and battle effectively against larger European forces. More importantly, Scandinavia s iron resources
enabled the creation and widespread adoption of shipbuilding technologies that facilitated territorial
expansion overseas, in particular the infamous Viking longship. (Sharpe 1991) The longship
represented the pinnacle of Norse shipbuilding techniques in the Viking Age and contributed

No other ruling power could match in number or tactical effectiveness the unstoppable tide of Viking
ships that flooded Europe after the attack on Lindisfarne. (Jones 1984) Saint Alcuin himself expressed
his surprise that such an inroad from the sea could be made and no one at the time could fully
comprehend just how devastating Viking attacks would prove to be. Early warbands consisting of one
to five ships limited their expeditions to swift hit and run strikes on coastal settlements and religious
centers of Britain, Ireland, and France that came with little to no warning. (Carroll 2014) The longship
s contoured hull and shallow draught made it the perfect landing craft since Vikings could sail straight
into low lying harbors and onto beaches for immediate disembarking, taking inhabitants by surprise
and minimizing the chance of armed resistance. (Marsden 1995) Inland areas were not safe either;
Viking ships traveled extensively up the navigable rivers and estuaries of Europe to attack unguarded
towns and villages and make off with captured plunder before any force could be raised to stop them.
The success of these small Viking parties lay in their speed of movement and the surprise of their
onslaught against larger numbers, advantages they owed to the superior versatility of the longship.

China s Low Rates Of Air Pollution
China, after an economic boom and great success in rapidly expanding in their markets and
manufacturing, has become the perfect opposite case example to the United States in recent times.
China began its rise to a modern global economic power in the 1980s, but never once had any strong,
well enforced environmental regulations until 2013. As unregulated factory and automobile use
increased, China s rates of pollution quickly surpassed that of the United States, leaving China much
more affected by air pollution than the United States in recent times. In China, there is a much higher
rate of cardiovascular disease than in the United States due to the high rates of air pollution. In China
in 2012, 98% of people have been exposed to small particles that result from burning coal that are
known to cause respiratory conditions like asthma and lung cancer as compared to 16% in the United
States (Zhang et al 5323). An estimated 1.2 million people die from exposure to outdoor air pollution
in China as compared to 200,000 in the United States. Due to recent improvements on enforcement of
environmental protection regulations in China, that number is decreasing. (Jiang et al 2). In 2013,
more than half of the days out of the year were considered unhealthy or even worse in Chinese cities.
Levels of harmful air particles were as high as 40 times higher than the World Health Organization
recommends. By 2017, with the implementation of environmental protection regulations in the area,

Kanye West Influence
Kanye West once said, Everyone s always telling you to be humble. When was the last time someone
told you to be great? Kanye West is a world renowned Hip Hop artist with over 200 awards and
accolades as a solo artist. From, The College Dropout, to The Life of Pablo, every album that West has
released to date has been different from the previous one. The amount of originality, patience,
ingenuity, and passion that he devotes to each of his eight studio albums illustrates the genius who is
Kanye West. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, for example, personifies what Kanye thinks is his,
most perfect album, and can even be described as an epic. His first album, The College Dropout,

Although this particular album may not be West s most accredited album, this album was a visual
masterpiece. Not only was the tour a visual masterpiece, but it enabled West to work with new people
like Saul Williams, Paul McCartney, and Trent Reznor. Even though he did not have a natural singing
voice, one of his most significant inspirations, Michael Jackson, encouraged him to keep trying. Not
being able to sing certain notes, West switched to Auto tune. Stand out songs like, Love Lockdown ,
showed the boldness in West s risk taking when using Auto tune. Nonetheless, West was still hurting
and mourning the death of his mother and felt truly lonely after His ex fiance, Alexis Phifer and he
broke up. Coldest Winter , is an extremely haunting track, of a broken down West, singing a mournful
goodbye to his mother. Then, there were the music videos. There was pop art expressed in Heartless ,
experimentation in, Welcome to Heartbreak , and a tribal theme in Amazing . Lastly, is Track 12,
Pinocchio Story , a live freestyle that West performed while putting on a full album show at the
Hollywood Bowl. With stairways to heaven, a golden woman, choirs, an orchestra, and most chilling,
a representation of his mother, West created a wonderful show for his audience, as well as a truly

Persuasive Essay On Boxing
Boxing has elements to it that teaches you more about fighting than you think is possible. People who
have never tried it think that because boxing only involves using the hands/fists without any kicking
or other moves that it s not real fighting. Those who have tried boxing know that it s tough sport that
involves strict training and tough competition. It s genuine athletics that requires raw speed, stamina,
and power. Your reflexed in boxing need to be quick and that involves fast reaction time on the part of
the boxer.
All types of fighters from mixed martial arts should learn to box because they will benefit from it.
Even if the punches and techniques aren t interesting to you, it s still a good sport to learn and master.
It will improve your athletic performance, speed, stamina, and your reflexes and reaction time. It
builds confidence and gives you polished moves.
Here are 5 viable reasons why every fighter should get some boxing skills.
1. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Speedy Reflexes are important in boxing. Boxing matches are faster paced than other fighting/combat
sports. The opponents are closer in proximity with both attacking and defending at the same time. You
don t hear the bell, walk out and walk around in boxing. You step out and start fighting. Sure, that s
great for hand to hand, but what about with weapons or kicking? The techniques used in boxing
improve your reaction time and reflexes, which helps you be faster when you need to be, and teaches
you how to use your hands when you re without a weapon or unable to kick.
2. Master the Art of Slickness by learning to box. You can master the art of slickness known as the
sweet science of boxing. Art + Efficiency = Slickness. That s the equation. Being slick helps you
overwhelm and shutdown your opponent. While it s a rare occurrence, slickness looks like a beat
down with all the boxing combinations being thrown. It also gives you a way to show your own
personal artistic expression in any

The Lessons Learned From Park Play
Governments Are Overfunding Parks The lessons learned from park play are not comparable to what
sidewalk play has to offer. Learning Responsibility on City Sidewalks by Jane Jacobs opens the reader
s eyes on the benefits of simple street play. In her passage, Jane Jacobs compares the more beneficial
effects of sidewalk play compared to the overpraised parks. Jacobs tells us that parks don t build a
stronger form of morality and help with developing more knowledge on city life like sidewalk play do.
Park children are given less of a chance to visually learn how to become well rounded citizens in
society from adults around them. Parks are not as amazing as they re believed to be from the public.
They do not offer the many chances to learn compared to what sidewalk interactions have to offer.
Plus, the playgrounds do not have enough adults to actually watch over and teach children the good
and the bad. Playgrounds are built for the concept of having fun, but they do not guide and raise
children to be good citizens. I believe that government should not heavily fund parks because parks do
not revere the essential teachings needed in society such as social abilities. I believe that instead of
overfunding parks we could benefit more by having the government actually invest more in club
sports because I think club teams open up more of an opportunity for people to develop their social
skills, instead of playing in a park. Club sports are provided in many cities but each one I

My Life Of My Mother
Literacy has always been close to my identity as a person. My mother wanted the best for her children,
and therefore would sing and read to us as soon as we were born. She encouraged out love of words
and books by taking us to the library for reading time and always seemed to find the most amazing
books for us to explore. My mother is very musically gifted, so songs were part of our daily routine.
There are still little songs that pop into my head about daily tasks that she created to help us learn and
make work and learning fun. When I grew a bit older, around the age of four, my mother formed a
group with other women in our neighborhood to form a preschool. They used the Joy School
curriculum and took turns having all of us over to their homes so that we could learn and play
together. I remember there was lots of music, reading many books, playing all sorts of games, and a
yearly Christmas program. Around this time, I began to learn about phonics and loved figuring out
which letters made which sounds. My mother tells me that I liked to rhyme a lot as a little child
because I found it fun. She said she thinks this is when my love of poetry started to develop. As I
transitioned into early elementary school, I was well prepared to enter Kindergarten. Because I have
always been pretty independent and self driven, my mother did not really have to push me to read. I
started reading the summer before Kindergarten and knew most sight words and how to sound out

What Is Ancient Greecenaean Culture
Ancient Greece
Greece is an important ancient civilization that is still alive today. Greece is an amazing country with
amazing culture . Greece has a rich and interesting history.
At various times in its history Greece included all of Epirus, Macedonia, and Thrace, part of Asia
Minor, and Magna Graecia. Archaeological remains show that Greece had a long prehistory, dating
from the Neolithic Age (c.4000 B.C.). By the Bronze Age (c.2800 B.C.) important cultures had
developed. The Aegean civilization had several phases, two of the most important being the Minoan
civilization and the Mycenaean civilization. These cultures had disappeared by 1100 B.C. The Greek
speaking Achaeans migrated into the Peloponnesus during the 14th and 13th cent. B.C. The Aeolians
and the Ionians apparently preceded the Dorians, who migrated into Greece before 1000 B.C. The
Ionians, moving forth, possibly as refugees, possibly as conquerors, settled in the Ionian Islands and
on the shores of Asia Minor, which became a part of the Greek world. ... Show more content on

Homeric Greece (named for the great epic poet Homer) was dependent on the agriculture of relatively
unproductive fields but was already open to the sea. Although the Greeks never rivaled the
Phoenicians or the later Carthaginians and Romans as mariners, the sea offered them an opportunity
for expansion and commerce. In the 8th, 7th, and 6th cent. B.C., the Greeks established colonies,
many of which became separate city states, from the Black Sea and the Bosporus (where Byzantium
was founded) to Sicily, S Italy (Magna Graecia), Mediterranean France, the northern shores of Africa,
and Spain. These colonies had a great influence on the history of the Greek mainland, where the city
states were developing in quarrelsome

Analysis Of Chris Ofili s No Woman No Cry
Painter Chris Ofili is well known in his highly decorative style to playfully explore the notion of black
cultural identity. British born to Nigerian parents artist Chris Ofili often makes work highlighting
political conversations. In 1998 he won the Turner Prize, the painting No Woman, No Cry was one of
the works included in exhibition which won him the prize. It was made while he was living and
working in London, a time period of Ofili s practice, beginning in 1996, in which he shifted from
making predominantly abstract paintings with loosely representative elements to pictures that
primarily focused on large scale individual figures. In particular, it is one of a number of paintings he
made in 1998 and 1999 that depict black women from the chest upwards. No Woman, No Cry(fig 1) is
a large, complex layered painting that depicts a crying black woman set in a background amongst
various abstract patterns. The black woman is shown in profile wearing blue eye shadow, red lipstick,
a string of coloured beads that form a necklace, the jewel of her necklace represented by ball of
elephant dung frequently used in Ofili s paintings. A stream of tears falls from her eyes, which all
feature in their centre a very small photograph of a boys face. When exhibited, Ofili has also used
elephant dung to make two rests on which to display the work while it leans against the gallery wall.

Iron Curtain Chapter Summary
The advent of high altitude reconnaissance, to include aerial and satellite platforms, had at least as
much impact on US intelligence efforts as the Ultra SIGINT intelligence program had on Allied
intelligence efforts during World War II possibly even greater. The Iron Curtain of the Cold War
served to not only keep people in, but prevent almost any attempted penetration by Western
intelligence agencies. Western powers knew the Soviet Union had ambitions to spread communism to
neighboring nations and intended to do what they could to minimize and contain the communist swell.
In order to succeed, the United States would have to better understand Soviet intentions and
capabilities as well as deter the Soviet threat through military posture. However, the United States had

At times, the detail provides comforting clarification on the individual s qualifications and their
historical levels of determination. At other times, unnecessary information, such as the type and color
of car that Richard M. Bissell s mother preferred to drive (yellow roadster), creates a sense that
Taubman doesn t have a filter. It often seems that Taubman simply included every bit of information
he collected into his book in order to create a false sense of expertise on the subject, almost negating
the amount of research that he obviously put into the book. Regardless, when Taubman does manage
to stay on topic, the information he provides is quite interesting and brings to light why many decision

necessary tools to operate during the Cold

  • 2. F. Scott Fitzgerald s The Barn Sadly, Ruth all but knows that she stays because Paul is white. She is still so ashamed of the event that she wants to cleanse her blackness and dirtiness with Paul s whiteness and cleanliness. The binary oppositions that have been passed on from white American culture to black American culture have claimed another victim and Ruth is left to deal with her emotional scarring alone. Paul s touch would never release her...whenever he touched her, she became blacker and dirtier than ever...[but] her blackness was not Paul s fault. Neither was her guilt. She was punishing herself for something, a crime she could not remember. You dirty...you black and dirty... (Baldwin). She wants very much to be content with being a black woman in America, who has no reason to feel shame for being sexual, but the event in the barn weighs heavily on her at all times. She is so desperate to be cleansed by way of Paul s whiteness that she will not leave a toxic, unfulfilling, nearly one sided relationship. Instead, she goes to work every day and seethes, thinking about what conquest he might acquire in her absence. Ruth s issues with her race and sexuality also come to the fore in the office, as she shares her coffee breaks with her female coworkers. While all the other office girls are whispering and conspiring over the marvelous Mr. Davis, their black superior, Ruth is contemplating her mixed race relationship and the unlikelihood that Mr. Davis would take up a gossipy office girl. Mr. Big opens with Lu Xun s soul heading to heaven after his death. Using imagery from the Cultural Revolution, heaven slowly turns into hell, and at the end of the play two revolutionary guards stand in front of Lu s dead body, talking about how thin he looks. Mr. Big recently completed its four day debut, from from March 31 to April 3, in at the National Theatre Company of China, and caused enthusiastic compliments as well as fierce criticism in Beijing. Mr. Big is about Lu Xun (1881 1936), widely recognized as the most important litterateur, and one of the most influential figures in Chinese modern history. After the 1919 May Fourth Movement, of which he was one of the leaders, Lu Xun began to exert a substantial influence on Chinese literature and culture. His best known works, Call to Arms (1922) and Wandering (1925), show the extraordinary gift of treading a fine line between criticizing the follies of his characters and sympathizing with those very follies. • 5. Tricking And Tripping Claire Sterk Summary Claire E. Sterk s article Tricking and Tripping: Fieldwork on Prostitution in Era of AIDS published by Social Change Press in 2000 takes into account the patterns and procedures that anthropologists take into practice during fieldwork. She provides some useful insights and learnt lessons during her studies with prostitutes. She also provides a close and intimate account of their lives and mental state in their own words. Her findings are substantiated with proper examples in the accounts of the daily lives of these women. Unlike most student s expectation of fieldwork as a leisure activity at some serene place, Sterk observes the pain associated with the lifestyle and brings into light some important patterns and procedures that anthropologists must consider while interviewing a research group. Sterk establishes her point of view about importance of general study of culture by provoking the essential human quality of compassion. She does so by describing the prostitutes as not alien and showing fine human qualities. Their habitual formations and mental qualities are like other ordinary humans. She emphasizes this theme by highlighting a poem written by a prostitute. The whole purpose of this initial exercise is to create consideration among readers about the lives and activities of prostitutes. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The relevance of this study is greatly highlighted by its placement in a time when AIDS was becoming more and more of an epidemic. During this time period prostitutes were seen as one of the greatest carriers of the disease, this lead to them being looked down upon greatly by the majority of society. When Sterk observed these women in their time of leisure and shows the aspects of their personality outside their line of work it humanized the women and displayed that they were merely people who are in an unfortunate ... • 6. Walden As A Mirror, Walden Reflections: Walden as a Mirror, Walden as a Lens When Henry David Thoreau went to Walden Pond on July 4, 1845, he had no way of knowing that 200 years later, Walden would be required reading for anyone with even a passing interest in American literature, environmental literature, or intentional living. But Walden is so much more than the story of one man s retreat into the woods to transact some private business. Thoreau s disarming directness and naturalistic style aside, Walden not an incidental text. With extensive revisions, distilling a little over two years into one, every chapter, sentence and word of Walden has a purpose and place. Renaissance sculptor Michelangelo is credited with saying, Every block of stone has a statue ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In fact, aside from a brief reference to the cycle of the seasons, where Thoreau says that he lived a summer and a winter life; saw how [he] could let the years run off, buffet the winter through and see the spring come in, this chapter gains seasonal association through the knowledge that Thoreau went to Walden in the summer. The Ponds brings us explicitly into autumn progressing from a calm September afternoon, to such a day in September or October, to a November after the severe frosts have come. The Pond in Winter brings the seasonal theme into the title and finally the culmination of, Spring. Where I Lived, and What I Lived For begins Walden s central narrative. Economy addresses the practicalities and the surface narrative, but Where I Lived, and What I Lived For lays out the groundwork for the extended metaphor that serves as Walden s symbolic backbone. Time is but the stream I go a fishing in, I drink at; but while I drink I see the sandy bottom and detect how shallow it is. Its thin current slides away, but eternity remains. I would drink deeper; fish in the sky, whose bottom is pebbly with stars, Thoreau tells us at the end of the chapter. This quote illustrates two concepts that recur again and again in Walden. First, the idea of water as simultaneously shallow and deep. Thoreau first proclaims that he can see the bottom of the stream but then elaborates, implying that there is something beyond the ... His fingers make a hat about his head. His pulse beat is so slow we think him dead. He loops in crazy figures half the night Among the trees that face the corner light. But when he brushes up against a screen, We are afraid of what our eyes have seen: For something is amiss or out of place When mice with wings can wear a human face. Theodore Roethke s poem The Bat clearly focuses on the animal the bat and effectively conveys through the latter an important message to the reader. By comparing the bat s depiction during both day and night, Roethke may be trying to convey that the bat is actually no more than a simple and peaceful being, which has been wrongly portrayed for years. From another point of view, the author could be wanting to convey, through the image of a bat, that everyone has a dark side . Roethke ingeniously does so in the final line of the poem with the latter s twist metaphorical ending; when mice with wings can wear a human face (Roethke, 10). As previously discussed, bats are usually associated with slyness and darkness, by making the bat wear a human face , Roethke is trying to express that bats can sometimes resemble humans and vice versa. Ultimately, humans can also sometimes wear a bat face and have a darker side. The author also gives the poem a very descriptive tone through a significant amount of imagery. For example, the metaphor; his fingers make a hat about his head (Roethke, 3), provides a detailed description of the bat s upper body in such a way that the reader is able to picture the bat as what Roethke wants him/her to picture it as. One could also infer that the author may again be trying to make the connection between bat and man; since men wear hats and not bats. Another metaphor would be; by day the bat is cousin to the mouse (Roethke, 1). Of course, mouse ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. United States Aggression Against Islam United States aggression against Islam: As noted above, the main goal of al Qaeda propaganda is to convince the Muslim world (ummah) that the West is waging a war on (or conducting a crusade against) Islam. All of the detainees at Guantanamo are Muslim, many were jailed without any involvement with al Qaeda, the Taliban, or militant behavior at all, (Fox News) and some abused. (Center for Constitutional Rights) These facts, manipulated correctly and placed into a certain context, could be used to convince a susceptible audience that the United States is operating the prison partially to persecute Muslim men, and as an example of the US targeting Muslims generally. Al Qaeda uses this imagined war as a rallying cry to convince a small minority in the Muslim world to join its cause, as well as a justification for its actions casting them as a defensive jihad against the enemies of the faith. In situations when the faith is attacked, according to Daveed Gartenstein Ross, each Muslim has an individual obligation to join the battle ... this must be done by all Muslims, and as Todd Helmus writes, Al Qaeda thus calls Muslims to Islam s defense. (121) The Canadian Center for Intelligence and Security Studies report explains that, Al Qaeda s propaganda portrays the current socio political system as one that oppresses and discriminates against Muslims, who are the victims of an international world order dominated by the West the aggressor and enemy of Islam. • 16. Summary Of The Circle Maker By Mark Batterson The spiritual formation book that I chose to read was, The Circle Maker: Praying Circles Around Your Biggest Dreams and Greatest Fears. Mark Batterson begins his book by telling a story about a guy named Honi. Honi and his community were in the middle of a long drought. If rain did not come soon to their land than lives were going to be in jeopardy. Honi began to draw a circle on in the sand. He gets on his knees and begins to pray to Elijah for a torrential downpour of rain. He makes it clear to God that he will not move from the circle he drew until he sends rain to his land. Lo and behold God sends rain to the land Batterson begins the first chapter talking about how the world needs more circle makers. He has a quote in his book that has ... This was not a problem at the beginning of my time at Hope because I was busy at work with Night to Shine. They argued because the first amendment protects the right to speak of many corporations and unions, whether or not people see them as human, therefore the are aloud to donate money to a candidate. (Bentley, 2017) In the academic journal written by Bentley, he States the Court majority (Justices Kennedy, Roberts, Alito, Scalia, and Thomas) argued, although government has the authority to prevent corruption or the appearance of corruption, it has no place in determining whether large political expenditures are either of those things, so it may not impose spending limits on that basis. This meaning the government cannot enforce spending limits on private donors due to the government not being able to identify the big businesses as corrupted . Since the government cannot label an organization as corrupt or unjust, therefore the donor can continue to assist the candidate. The main problem is the United States of America seems to avoid this. There is a clear problem with Citizens United being able to continue donating money to candidates without giving them so much power. This can be stopped through a constitutional amendment to strip away the corporations of their rights. More importantly, Scandinavia s iron resources enabled the creation and widespread adoption of shipbuilding technologies that facilitated territorial expansion overseas, in particular the infamous Viking longship. No other ruling power could match in number or tactical effectiveness the unstoppable tide of Viking ships that flooded Europe after the attack on Lindisfarne. (Jones 1984) Saint Alcuin himself expressed his surprise that such an inroad from the sea could be made and no one at the time could fully comprehend just how devastating Viking attacks would prove to be. Early warbands consisting of one to five ships limited their expeditions to swift hit and run strikes on coastal settlements and religious centers of Britain, Ireland, and France that came with little to no warning. (Carroll 2014) The longship s contoured hull and shallow draught made it the perfect landing craft since Vikings could sail straight into low lying harbors and onto beaches for immediate disembarking, taking inhabitants by surprise and minimizing the chance of armed resistance. (Marsden 1995) Inland areas were not safe either; Viking ships traveled extensively up the navigable rivers and estuaries of Europe to attack unguarded towns and villages and make off with captured plunder before any force could be raised to stop them. The success of these small Viking parties lay in their speed of movement and the surprise of their onslaught against larger numbers, advantages they owed to the superior versatility of the longship. • 27. The Lessons Learned From Park Play Governments Are Overfunding Parks The lessons learned from park play are not comparable to what sidewalk play has to offer. Learning Responsibility on City Sidewalks by Jane Jacobs opens the reader s eyes on the benefits of simple street play. In her passage, Jane Jacobs compares the more beneficial effects of sidewalk play compared to the overpraised parks. Jacobs tells us that parks don t build a stronger form of morality and help with developing more knowledge on city life like sidewalk play do. Park children are given less of a chance to visually learn how to become well rounded citizens in society from adults around them. Parks are not as amazing as they re believed to be from the public. They do not offer the many chances to learn compared to what sidewalk interactions have to offer. Plus, the playgrounds do not have enough adults to actually watch over and teach children the good and the bad. Playgrounds are built for the concept of having fun, but they do not guide and raise children to be good citizens. I believe that government should not heavily fund parks because parks do not revere the essential teachings needed in society such as social abilities. I believe that instead of overfunding parks we could benefit more by having the government actually invest more in club sports because I think club teams open up more of an opportunity for people to develop their social skills, instead of playing in a park.
