Aristotle And Aristotle s Philosophy
Both Plato and Aristotle were prominent philosophers during their time and even today remain some
of the most well known philosophers ever. Aristotle was a student of Plato s and Plato s influence was
noticeable throughout Aristotle s work. Though Aristotle believed and would later teach a lot of
Platonic philosophy, that did not mean that he agreed with everything that Plato taught. One thing that
Aristotle would critique about Plato s teaching was his idea of what he called Forms and their role in
the world. Although both Aristotle and Plato believed that something s form helped classify what it is,
I found Aristotle s understanding of form to be more convincing because he believed that Forms
consisted within the one world in which we all already live as opposed to Plato who thought that the
world of Forms was separate from the world of everything else. Both men make very compelling
points to back up their beliefs, but I just felt Aristotle s theory was more believable.
For Plato, the sense of the forms was about the understanding of something higher. Plato believed that,
when one beholds the Forms, one exercises Pure Reason, and one is like the liberated prisoner [from
the allegory of the cave] who gazed upon the trees and mountains in the sunlit upper world (Palmer
67). Palmer simplified Plato s conception of the forms in saying that, Forms are the eternal truths that
are the source of all Reality (Palmer 67). One example that Plato used to show this was by

Paradox Of Thomas Gray
Literature past and present is often a reflection of desire and intimacy, one s most inner thoughts
feelings. A writers thoughts spilling onto the page, a cleanse of sorts. While other times it may be a
commentary on society or a satire to highlight the numerous ills within a community of culture and so
in many ways nothing has to remain unwritten, nothing can remain untouched by an authors hand, and
yet even with seemingly all reaching grasp an author has when producing literature, there are however
things that simply cannot be said the every looming unsayable that dictates that which must be left
untouched, a paradox. But the question is not only what the unsayable is in context of time place,
gender, and cultural influence, but what the accumulative role of the unsayable is within literature; this
then leads to a discussion as to its role as a literary device.
Thinking in paradoxes, poetry is both one of the most constrained, yet free forms of literature and a
poet who particularly demonstrates the both as one and thus exploring the role of the unsayable is
Thomas Gray. Gray s poetic style is often very much conforming to certain styles, especially in his
sonnet [on the death of Richard West] , whereby he adheres to the common 14 lines that the sonnet
form requires, while simultaneously having a rather scattered rhyme scheme of a,b,c,d. A,b,a,b.
E,f,g,h, with the final couplet being g,h. The fact that the two are on opposing scales demonstrates

Benjamin Netanyahu Qualities
Benjamin Bibi Netanyahu was born on October 21,1949 in Tel Aviv and is a prominent world leader
and the current Prime Minister of Israel. Truth be told, it was not always smooth sailing for Netanyahu
and for most parts, it was an uphill battle for him. Despite all the impediments he faced along the way,
he remained focus, had confidence and exhibited persistence (some of the many qualities of a true
leader) and he persevered to get where he is today.
In 1963, Benjamin Netanyahu took residence in the United States of America, particularly in the state
of Philadelphia where he and his family moved as a result of his father Benzion Netanyahu receiving
academic post. Benjamin returned to Israel at age 18 and got enlisted in 1967 in the Israeli military
where he became a soldier and spent five years. Netanyahu was apart of an elite unit called Sayeret

that of the average man, According to the trait perspective, Netanyahu displayed intelligence seeing
that he was academically accomplished in his early days as well as his fluency seeing that he lead
several successful military operations. One could analyze and use the trait perspective to interpret the

Analysis Of William Wordsworth s Macbeth Essay
STORY ANALYSIS WORKSHEET
The Protagonist: Romney Wordsworth
The Protagonist s Chief Want: Wordsworth chief want is to reveal to the chancellor that every human
being has purpose, worth, and a voice. The value of one s life is not simply based on his or her
conformity to the various edicts set forth by the State. In order to achieve his chief want, Romney is
willing to sacrifice his own life. At the end of the story, Romney relinquishes his life and the
chancellor escapes. After Romney s death, it seems as though the chancellor learned nothing from his
near death experience in Wordsworth room; yet, upon being pronounced obsolete , the chancellor
desperately screams in anguish that his life contains purpose and worth. Thus, Wordsworth fulfilled
his chief want through his life and death.
The Inciting Incident: The inciting incident begins when the chancellor finds Wordsworth guilty of
being an obsolete man. Wordsworth understands that merely arguing his position will yield unfruitful
results; rather, he will only convince the chancellor through his actions.
Antagonists:

Hippocrates And The Modern Western Europe Essay
In the medieval western Europe times medical knowledge was ascribe to faith and religion. A

to the knowledge that some physician might have accumulated, some disease could not be cure by the
practitioner; therefore, leaving the patients having to reach out to the hagiographical leader for advice

Music and the Mind Essay
When Albert Einstein was a young kid, his teachers believed that he was too stupid to learn They
suggested to his mother that he just skip school and start manual labor early, because he was a
hopeless case. But despite everything, his mother continued to make him go to school; in addition, she
also bought him a violin. Violin soon became one of his greatest passions, and he even stated himself,
that playing the violin was what made him intelligent. His friend, G.J. Withrow had said, that
whenever Einstein had trouble figuring out an equation he would go and improvise on the violin.
One reason that suggests this may have really helped him is that music has been proven to have short

There is, however, evidence behind Mozart and the slight improvement in test scores. It s
effectiveness is shown through the results of an IQ test performed on three groups of college students.
The first group listened to Mozart s Sonata for Two Pianos in D Major before taking the IQ test. The
second group listened to a relaxation tape and the third group had nothing to listen to. The results
showed that the first group s average had a difference of 9 points (119) compared to the third group
(110), who had sat in silence, while the second group only had a one point increase from the group
who sat in silence. So Mozart can increase your IQ up to 9 points, it may not be a huge, but there s
still a noticeable difference.
A method created by Dr. George Lozanov, a very well known Bulgarian psychologist, was proven to
teach foreign languages to students in just a fraction of time it usually took. The system had students
learn the same amount of grammar and vocabulary typically learned in one school term (about 1,000
words and phrases) taken in all within a day. To do this, he used certain classical music pieces from
the Baroque period that contained the 60 beat per minute pattern in his lessons.
Through his method he proved that foreign languages can be learned with 85 100% efficiency in only

The United States is a country located in North America bordering the vast Atlantic Ocean and Pacific
Ocean. The neighboring countries are Canada (north) and Mexico (south). The geography of the
United States is varied with mountains in the west (the Rockies), and a broad central plain, and low
mountain in the east (the Appalachians). The government system is a constitution based federal

The United States is divided into 50 states, plus the District of Columbia. Mainly known as the lower
48 states or also commonly known as the contiguous states, all of the states excluding Hawaii and
Alaska, which don t attach to the larger part of the country. Hawaii is an island state located in the mid
Pacific Ocean and Alaska is located just northwest of Canadas edge. The 3.7 million square miles that
makes up the United States makes it the third largest country on earth, standing behind Russia and
Canada. While Canada is just a little larger than the United States in land mass, Russia is almost just
as twice as large compared.
Population wise, the United States is the third largest country compared to China and India. Based on

Influence of Iliad to Troy
First off, Homer s Iliad was the main source of influence for Wolfgang Petersen s film, Troy. However,
even though it is directly influenced by the poem, Troy does not stay true to the poem for the entire
movie. Some major difference s between Homer s Iliad and Wolfgang Petersen s film Troy, is that
there was no mention of the Gods being participants in the battle of Troy. This was a major plot point
in Homer s Iliad, as the Gods who fought on the battlefield had somewhat of an influence on the
outcome of each battle and eventually the outcome of the war. By taking out the God element that the
original poem had, Wolfgang Petersen has given the film more room for human emotions. This allows
themes like love to be much more emphasised than ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By doing this Petersen gave the film a sort of good guy gets the girl type feeling, as Paris is shown to
be innocent and harmless, even though he caused the war. In the film he may be seen as a hero type

because he cause the Trojan war.
Petersen s version of the Trojan war, stays true to the basic plot line of the actual Trojan war detailed
in Homer s Iliad. However the basic plot line which Petersen retains is not enough to give viewers,
details on what really happened in the Trojan war. Petersen sacrifices key plot points for themes that
will appeal to the more modern audience as his version contains the drama that a modern audience
loves and the theme of romance and love, which the modern audience also enjoys. This would not be
the case for an ancient Greek audience, as the ancient Greeks preferred a much more violent,
philosophical story, with literary opinions on the Gods, which they

Build Your Redesign Vocabulary Organizations are constantly changing over time to keep up with
internal and external environmental demands. When organizations are in the process of changing, an
organizational redesign is in the works. The purpose of this assignment is to discuss redesign
challenges that Community Health Center of Central Wyoming (CHCCW) faces during its redesign
phase of organizational change. Fundamentals of Organizational Redesign Organizational redesign is
the process in which changing an organization s informal design is due to shifting dynamics in the
organization s environment (Spector, 2013, p. 78). This happens for a variety of reasons, and an
organization should strategically consider both the internal and external environment for causes in the
dynamic shift. Organizational redesign does not just effect policy and process development, but also
the behaviors and norms of the organizational culture. One reason for leaders of an organization to
consider an organizational redesign is financial status of the organization. This is the case for
CHCCW. CHCCW has been in the process of an organizational redesign for lack of financial
sustainability, along with improving the cultural and morale of the organization for the past couple of
years. Organizational Redesign Challenges There are many different redesign challenges that
organizations must comprehend. By being aware of the potential challenges, leaders can develop a
strategic plan to be prepared if

Difference Between Art And Contemporary Art
Christian Casas
Rafael Hernandez
LIT3400
The Everyday
A typical way of relating social/political issues to art assumes that art represents the thing one way or
another. But there can be a more interesting perspective, which is looking at the field of art as a place
of work. Basically look at what it does not what it shows. Amid all other forms of art, fine art has been
associated with post Fordist ideology. Post Fordism is a popular system of economically based on
production, consumption and has been in most industrialized countries since the late 20th century.
Contemporary art is not an out of this world discipline hidden away in some remote building. In fact,
it s the opposite because it positions itself in the thick of things. It can function as a brand name
without a brand feeding off the bits and pieces of social and political issues. Presently, contemporary
art has grown apart from important hubs, which gives the artist a wider range of production and
provides various opportunities for showcasing the work. In contrast, this has not always been the case.
Artist in novels about portraitures are depicted as servants due to the flow of cash. Art should be
functioning on its own without the need of an institutional backing in order to create separation
between the artist and their work as well as what the work can do .
Portraits appear as an object already existing in the world and about whose producer and the process
of production not much (most often nothing) needs

Racial Differences In Basketball Essay
In my opinion, I definitely think there is a racial difference when it comes to athletic ability. For the
most part, something that we can all agree on, is that we can see the racial differences in sports
especially when it comes to basketball. When trying to find individuals who are good at playing
basketball, most likely the team will consist of a majority of individuals who comes from an African
descent. The question however is, why is this the case? I believe that there are two theories to explain
this concept.
The first theory that I feel like might be the answer is because, it is something that they have grown up
and have done throughout several generations. When children see certain activities that are constantly
repeated throughout their family, or those who look similar to them race wise, they feel like it is
something that they have to do as well. If we view this situation in the eyes of a child who is African
American, when he or she sees that there is a famous man from an African descent who is the best
player within the entire basketball team, the child now believes that those who are black are better at
playing basketball, which encourages the child to follow the footsteps of those who belongs in their
race. However, if the same child watches a soccer match, the child sees that there isn t anyone on the
soccer team who is black. So, in the child s mind, he or she is already making assumptions that, those
who are African American are the ones who play

In Section 3 we discuss empirical implementation. We present the results of the decomposition for the
Indian income tax in Section 4. Section 5 concludes. 2. Decomposing Income Tax Revenue Changes
Before formally setting out the decomposition, we explain its logic. Comparisons of revenue
performance are made with a pre selected (here pre reform) base year. In order to examine revenue
loss, we define potential revenue at base year tax rates as the revenue that would obtain in the absence
of base erosion due to deductions and evasion, if the base year tax rate structure was in operation.
Conceptually, to arrive at potential revenue we tax potential DECOMPOSING REVENUE
EFFECTS 179 income, which we take as given.6 Deductions and exclusions (other than for costs of
earning income) cause taxable income to be narrower than potential income. Due to tax evasion by,
for example, failing to file a return, understating receipts or overstating expenses, potential income
itself may not be fully revealed to tax authorities. What the decomposition analysis does is to separate
the difference between potential revenue and revenue actually collected in any year into components
reflecting losses due to tax schedule changes, base erosion, and evasion. Potential revenues will,
however, differ across years, even if the tax schedule is unchanged, due to changes in aggregate
income and its distribution. To account for this, we normalize the difference

one of the main countries that faced imperialism. The Boers, also known as the Dutch descendents or
Dutch farmers, were the first to colonize South Africa in 1652. Later on, the British came and took
Cape Colony from the Dutch in 1795. The British at first mainly wanted to colonize South Africa as it

There were many important positive effects. First of all, there was a huge advance in agriculture.
Early, when the Dutch settled in South Africa, they taught South Africans new farming techniques that

tools to South Africans. The discovery of gold helped the British use gold efficiently as they made
different kinds of jewelry which increased the economy enormously. The British bought many African

In fact, most Japanese American s recount this moment in history as a traumatic experience as they

that [Americans] cannot discriminate among [citizens] on the ground of racial origin (Irons 41).
American s are raised to believe the founding fathers had the best interests of all citizens, and the

considered to cover at least 200 years between 1400 and 1600. The word renaissance is derived from
the French and translated literally means rebirth. The Renaissance period in art history resembles a
time during the western age of discovery and exploration. Art and sculpture, during this time, became
appreciated as a personal manner of communication and expression. Sculptors were the first to present
new Renaissance forms during the early 15th century. The oldest sculptor was Filippo Brunelleschi.
Brunelleschi later became an architect and was widely known for designed the octagonal dome of
Florence Cathedral which was completed in the year 1436. Brunelleschi is known for developing a

the following generations. Over the duration of the 15th and 16th century, the influence of the
Renaissance spread all throughout Italy, France, and northern Europe. After this time, there was a rise
in the interest of classical learning and values and the time period created an environment of growing
prosperity and knowledge. Overall, art during the Renaissance age did an excellent job at capturing

Hegemonic Masculinity Summary
R.W. Connell s (1995) concept of hegemonic masculinity is the most significant theoretical device for
understanding the masculinity hierarchy. Demetriou (2001) states how hegemonic masculinity
expresses two different social practices, from a social constructivist view. The first is that men benefit
from the patriarchal system of society. The second process is that there is an intramasculine hierarchy
by which the social order of men is created and maintained. Connell (1995) argues that this is the
reason for the societal gender order where not only do men uphold power over women, but also
certain men are dominant over other men. Demetriou (2001) criticises Connell s term of hegemonic
masculinity for being too broad, as the main focus is usually placed on the intramasculine process. He
therefore believes this process to be internal hegemony (ibid).
In terms of the intramasculine order , Connell argues that there is a specific type of masculinity that is
revered the most and holds dominance over all other. Men who most closely exemplify this archetype
are considered to hold the most social capital. In this model Connell states that gay men are at the
bottom of the order and straight men that embody certain characteristics sit atop the hierarchy. Connell
s model furthers Brannon s (1976) work. In this he suggests four rules by which men should follow.
Hence, in Connell s (1995) model homophobia is a significant factor in sitting at the top of the
hierarchy and

majority of the poor households in the developing countries easily access the machine s services, and
thus, increase their chance of accessing clean drinkable water through purification of the available

around the world just like the mobile phones technologies have done. Planning remains an integral
part of every innovation as its manager endeavors to having it serve its purpose in addition to him
reaping its benefits; hence, Dean s innovation is no exception in this managerial process. Managing an

Japanese Comfort Women
Japanese Comfort Women
It is estimated that between one and two hundred thousand female sex slaves were forced to deliver
sexual services to Japanese soldiers, both before and during World War II. These women were known
as comfort women and the Imperial Conference, which was composed of the emperor, representatives
from the armed forces and the main Cabinet ministers, approved their use by Japanese soldiers.
(Walkom)
The term comfort women refers to the victims of a premeditated systematic plan originated and
implemented by the government of Japan to enslave women considered inferior and subject them to
repeated mass rapes, said Michael D. Hausefeld, one of over 35 lawyers in his firm representing the
former sexual prisoners in a class ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In Japan, infected women were killed. Their food was mixed with cyanide, their bodies taken to a cave
and finally, the cave was blown up with a grenade.
The comfort houses made money off these women and it is believed that the Japanese government

Imperialist guards disappeared without trace. Most comfort women describe the experience this way,
Suddenly, the soldiers came no more, and upon asking we found that the war had ended. In other
regions, as the Japanese committed harikari , the women were forced to do the same. In extreme cases,
the women were put in a cave and blown up.
After the war, many of the comfort women were too sick to be moved and were taken under the care
of the American army. Most of the women were left with no place to go, as they were in a strange
country with no money, and were too humiliated to go home. According to one comfort woman, my
body s wasted, therefore I do not dare go home in fear of being ignored and looked down upon.
Even after the war ended, the comfort women were not free. Their guilty minds and inferiority
complexes kept them from returning home and they stayed in foreign countries. The small amount that

Socrates
Socrates was one of the greatest Greek philosophers. His work was not to propose any specific
knowledge or policy: it was to show how argument, debate, and discussion could help men to
understand difficult issues. Most of the issues he dealt with were only political on the surface.
Underneath, they were moral questions about how life should be lived. Such is the influence of
Socrates that philosophers before him are called the Presocratic philosophers. Socrates made enemies,
three of whom brought charges against him. Socrates was tried for his life in 399 BC, found guilty,
and put to death by drinking hemlock. The story of his trial and death is the subject of a tract by Plato
which is called the Apologia. Most of what we know about ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

In Plato s works, Socrates says he knows nothing, but can draw out other people s ideas just as his
mother helped other women to give birth. In 399 BC, when Socrates was an old man, three citizens
Meletus, Anytus and Lycon brought charges against Socrates. A trial was held. In ancient Athens the
procedure was quite different from the present day. There was a jury of 500 men drawn from the
citizens. Both the accusers and the defendant had to make speeches in person to the jury. Guilt or
innocence was by majority vote. There was no preset penalty if the verdict was guilty . Both the
accuser and the defendant would make speeches proposing what the penalty should be. Again, a vote
was taken. There were two charges against him. The general theme was that Socrates was a menace to
society. The first charge was of heresy, disbelief in the Gods. It was probably meant to cause prejudice
amongst the jurymen. Actually, Socrates observed all the correct procedures of the religion of his
times. The charge had been used successfully against another philosopher, Anaxagoras. The second
charge was that he corrupted the youth with his teachings. What was meant by this? Apparently, this
was not about his personal relationship with his pupils. It was about the way he was thought to
influence their political views. His circle had included a number of right wing aristocrats whose ideas
were now rejected by most citizens. The brilliant

The Revolt Of Mother
American Realism: The Movement American Realism is defined as a literary movement in which the
author focused on writing about life as it actually was. Realist authors, such as William Dean Howells,
Mary E. Wilkins Freeman, and Charles Chesnutt, wrote about common life experiences rather than on
how one wanted their life to be like. The whole movement of American Realism involved a transition
of the reader s mind from the previous movement, American Romanticism. American Romanticism
focused on the ideal lifestyle involving imagination and emotion. Realistic author s purpose in their
writing was to get people to view life as it was when they woke up in the morning. This is only one

Wilkins Freeman s, the author of The Revolt of Mother, purpose in writing this story was to bring
awareness to feminism, which could also be the Cult of Domesticity. The Cult of Domesticity was a
collection of attitudes that associated true womanhood with the home and family. Women were to
manage their homes, children, and husbands. They were not allowed to engage in hard labor, political
life, nor eth competitive individualism of the industrial economy, just like feminism. In the story,
Mother wants to know why were there men digging in the field and after she kept asking Father, he
told her that they were building a cellar for a new barn. She asked him why he would build a barn
when they needed a house but he did not answer and he left. She asked her son, Sammy, what was
Father going to do with the barn and he told her that Father was going to buy four cows. Her actions
of washing the dishes vigorously made it known that she was upset but she did not say a word. While
washing dishes, her daughter, Nanny, asks her if she thought it was too bad that Father was building a
new barn as much as they needed a house. Mother tells her that they are women and women know
only what men folks think we do, so far as any use of it goes, an how we d ought to reckon men folks

it s not a woman s place to question a man about his work even if she disagrees. After dinner Mother
had a talk with Father about a new house versus a new barn. She stood her ground on why they needed
another house by pointing out the flaws in the current house such as limited space. Father did not
answer Mother s question of whether he thought it was right to build another barn when they needed a
house. Instead he went back to the field. Time passes and Father gets an opportunity to go to Vermont

Progressivism, The And, And The Stock Market Crash
In America s pastime, there were many conflicts that continued to help shape America. Citizens were
becoming more aware and concerned about how America was managed, as conflict was becoming a
regular misfortune for the country. Events such as progressivism, the roaring twenties, and the stock
market crash may have seemed like a negative time in the United States at face value, but the overall
impacts and effects helped establish innovations that still positively influence the lives of citizens
today. Progressivism can be loosely defined as a way to progress towards better conditions, which is
what many people aspired to do for their country during the Gilded Age. This ideal came about when
people began to see poverty become more popular throughout the country, and many blamed the
government. Americans believed the solution was to have the government fixed before it could fix
other problems. Muckrakers were the first people to articulate progressive ideas by uncovering
corruption, targeting government and social problems, and raising awareness through journalism and
literature. Herbert Spencer was one man who tested the idea of natural selection through his book, On
the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection. Spencer strongly reinforced individualism by
applying the theory of evolution and natural selection to human society. He believed society became
better because only the fittest survived and those who didn t gradually died. Some industrial leaders

ANALOGICAL NORMATIVE ARGUMENTS Normative Arguments
Analogies are often used in normative arguments, where the conclusion is a normative statement that
something should (or should not) be done, should (or should not) be legal, or that something is good
(or bad) or right (or wrong). Normative statements are often understood as statements about what is
morally or ethically right or wrong.
To support a normative conclusion, an argument must have at least one normative premise. A
normative feature such as is morally wrong or should be done can t just appear out of nowhere in the
conclusion it must first appear in a premise. An analogical argument with a normative gives us just
what we need to follow this rule: a normative premise to support the normative conclusion.

An Unexamined Life Is Not Worth Living
The Examined or Unexamined Life Socrates was a classical Greek philosopher who lived from 470
BC to 399 BC. Today he is credited with many influential philosophical ideas and quotes, but one in
particular An unexamined life is not worth living . What Socrates means by this quote is that a life
without the pursuit of wisdom and knowledge is no life at all. Socrates reflects on this idea to his
audience of jurors during his trial. The men of Athens felt threatened by Socrates, believing him
spreading his philosophical ideas would disrupt their way of life and order in the city of Athens.
During his trial Socrates pleads his ignorance about the world around him and that all he wishes to do
is to explore his thought and attempt to gain as much knowledge as he can. Throughout his life
Socrates has gained a number of enemies and critics just for being a curious person. He understands
this and preaches it to his jurors at the trial explaining to them that he would venture around the city
conversing with professionals of a certain craft, not for the purpose of exposing their ignorance of the
world around them but to learn for himself along with attempting to teach them to think critically and
on their own. Socrates uses the craftsmen as an example in his defense. He explains that he
approaches the craftsmen to become more knowledgeable about their profession and that they would
be wiser than he was about the subject, he goes on to say the good craftsmen seemed to me to have the

The Communication of Window displays

This coldness, along with the strong clutch of the prop, which is the hand, create a language or

significant value to the window, allowing the window to reflet the brand image. This supports the idea
that retail design is more reactive than product design, since the added value in the window given to
the shoes made them more attractive to buy.

The localized light in Figure 4 establishes coziness in the window. It seduces the customer to look into
the window. This lessens the effect of the exxagerated walls and floor. The light also removes the
attention off the mannequins clothing and onto the shoes around her. The props here may, to some
people, override everything else. Still, they create a surprising element, causing a passerby to come
back for more, according to Mary Portas. Also, although they are random, they still hang together with
the merchandise and make it more graphic. These three windows get emotions excited by allowing the
customer to be a part of something much larger, tightening the retailer s relationship with the
consumer.

The Frameworks Of New Literacy Studies ( Nls ),...
Theoretical Frameworks
I am going to theorize my study in the frameworks of New Literacy Studies (NLS), multimodality,
and sociocultural identities theory. NLS looks at literacy learning in the 21st century as a social and
cultural phenomenon; multimodality uses a variety of modes such as visual, audio, and spatial
representations to achieve the purpose of meaning making; sociocultural identities theory focuses
identity construction in social contexts where individuals interact with the social world such as their
literacy activities of reading and writing in various social and cultural contexts; I will briefly introduce
each individual theory and explain how they are going to connect with and help theorize this study.
New Literacy Studies (NLS). The New London Group (1996) has broadened our understanding of
being literate from learning to read and write in page bound, official, standard forms for the national
language (p. 61) to incorporating multimodal methods such as textual, visual, audio, gestural to make
meaning out of the social and cultural context. NLS perceives literacy learning as a social and cultural
practice that should be understood and studied in a variety of contexts, including cognitive, social,
cultural, historical, and institutional (Gee, 2009). The perspective of literacy as a social practice seeks
to shed light upon how students cultures, contexts, and histories are embedded within their literacy
learning. Moreover, a social perspective of literacy

prostitution will be legalizing promiscuity, which destroys many families and brings about social

Legalizing prostitution can also lead to the spread of sexually transmitted diseases. The government
spends a lot of money to curb the sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV/AIDs epidemic. This
happens even when prostitution is illegal. Most individuals ignore the use of protection when having
sex with prostitutes. These prostitutes have multiple sex partners and thus they can act as a good route
of transmission for these diseases. Legalizing prostitution can also increase the instances of human

chimpanzee heart transplant the baby only lived 20 days which is longer than she would live without it
because there are no human hearts available for her. If you knew that she may not live for long but in
the time, she is living a human heart could become available but if she survives she will have to be on
anti rejection medication for the rest of her life would you continue with the procedure and give your
child a chimpanzee heart? (Thesis Statement) Medical technology has improved since the 1600s when
the first blood transfusion with sheep blood was transferred into a patient in 1667. Xenotransplants are
when you are transplanting organs or tissues from one species into another. There are many animals
used like pigs and monkeys as well as many others. Animals like chimpanzees and baboons are used
because they are genetically closer to humans which means there is less chance of rejection of the
organ but there is a limited supply so they are not used as often.

Analysis Of Hands By Xiao Hong
In the short story Hands by Xiao Hong, the main character, Wang Yaming, experiences this sort of
pain in her boarding school. In this story, the main character is being tormented by students and staff
because of her black, stained hands. Her hands are this way because, she is the dyer s daughter and
wants to make ends so she can afford to go to school. When fellow classmates and the Principal of
Wang Yaming criticized her for her hands, it made depictions of how people will treat you unfairly
because of your flaws. Judgment towards someone based off of looks is unacceptable, since you don t
know who the person really is.
First, we notice how the other students reacted towards Wang Yaming, their judgment towards her is
unbearable. When a student insulted her, she said, As far as I m concerned, she said, this won t do at
all. It s unsanitary. Who wants to be with her, with those vermin all over her body? (Hong 172). After
looking through the short story, it shows that the author is explaining that flaws are usually a source of
humiliation and bullying. When a group of Wang Yaming s classmates disapproved of her sleeping in
their dormitory, some said that, She s got lice, I m not going to sleep next to her, and I m not going to
either (Hong 173). Based off of reading a small part of the short story, it shows that the author is
explaining that trying to fit in is not always easy and the flaws and weaknesses a person has will play
a role.
We also perceived the abuse and

The information that scientists have gathered can be viewed as a set of inheritable instructions for the
function of a person s development. People still use the tools scientists made during the Human
Genome Project to extend their efforts for characterizing all of the genomes of many different
organisms. Its used a lot in biological research for mice, fruit flies and flatworms. Not only did they
increase the materials scientists can use, they also provided new advanced methods for understanding
and organizing information that came from the Human Genome Project for scientists and other people.
The DNA the scientist used for the project came from volunteers whose identity was kept a secret.
They provided the scientist with samples of DNA for sequencing. This gave them more than enough
DNA to sort through and gather information

Jim Crow Law Effect
During the time period when the Jim Crow Law was in effect, African Americans suffered drastically
in the state of Louisiana including sharecroppers, factory workers and laborers. It was a law that
separated blacks and whites, giving the whites the ability to denote and feel superior to African
Americans. The Jim Crow laws economically affected African Americans in Louisiana prior to the
Civil Rights Movement for a variety of reasons. The first reason is that the Jim Crow Law lead to
unemployment; black farmers earned very little which caused them to go in debt forcing thousands of
them to migrate. Another reason is that the Jim Crow Law affected African Americans socially causing
a less opportunities for them to succeed, therefore affected them economically. Violence was another
effect from the Jim Crow Law which traumatize and torture blacks during this dreadful time, which

The Jim Crow Law lead to unemployment for African Americans, which cause many African
American families to struggle finding homes and a job that will provide them with a place to leave and
food to eat. The Jim Crow Law segregated blacks and whites, which meant that there was really little
work for blacks since white people where the ones that owed most of the compaies or the ones
offering jobs. In fact, due to the segregation and inequality the Jim Crow law performed, the pay was
different depending on skin color. African American s wages were extremely lower than white people
because of their skin color and their limited in skills. At times, black people were able to find jobs but
the pay was miserable. This inequality in pay caused blacks to work for many hours to support their
families, but still then they couldn t afford much for their families and were again treated as

In The Belly Case Study
Essay Two: In The Belly As human beings, we are taught at an early age to always do the right thing
morally and ethically, which follows us into adulthood. This is what Tom T. a radiology technician

situation, where a young lady suffering from abdominal pain, he noticed evidence of metallic material
from her x rays. The patient then becomes inquisitive about why a resident on duty instructed Tom to
take more x rays. Then two days later the patients has been released stating to Tom that Dr. K didn t
see nothing on the x rays, and this Tom knows this is a lie. Tom s feels as if he lost his ability to do the
right thing and doesn t know what to do, when he says goodbye to the patient as she exits the building
unaware. Throughout this essay the ethical dilemmas, rights of the patient vs, duties of heath care
providers, and a suggested decision model for Tom will all be addressed. 1) There are several ethical

Impact Of The Renaissance
Whenever I think about the renaissance, I think of the of the dark ages. The Renaissance was a period
in European history, that took place during the 14th through the 17th century. Accordant Leonardo da
Vinci he describes the culture of the Renaissance as the cultural bridge between the Middle Ages .
Renaissance started in Italy during the period of medieval, then it slowly spread throughout Europe.
The term Renaissance over the years, has become synonymous with ideas of expanding, rebirth and
cultural expansion. To begin with, a renaissance is a revolution of the rebirth of ideas within a country

In Italy, the humanist educational program won rapid acceptance and, by the mid 15th century, many
of the upper classes had received a humanist education. Some of the highest officials of the Catholic
church were humanists with the resources of a mass important library. The much humanist effort went
into improving the understanding and translations of the biblical and early Christian texts. According
to the American Humanist Association, define humanism as is a progressive life stance that, without
supernaturalism, affirms our ability and responsibility to lead meaningful, ethical lives capable of
adding to the greater good of humanity.
The romantic music movement was an intellectual movement that originated in the second half of the
19th century in Europe, that strengthened in reaction to the industrial revolution. It was a revolt
against social and political norms of the ages of enlightenment. The romantic music movement was
embodied most strongly in the visual art, music, and literature, but had a major impact on history and
education. In the romantic period, music became more expressive and emotional, expanding to
encompass literary, artist, and philosophical themes. During the romantic period, music often took on
a much more nationalistic purpose. During the late 19th century there was a dramatic expansion in the
size of the orchestra and the diversity of instruments used in this ensemble. The public concert became
a key part of urban middle class society,

Importance Of Religion In Puritan Society
During the Puritan Era of American history, religion was ingrained in every aspects of society.
Literature written in or set in that time shows how religion impacted daily life. Many famous pieces,
including The Scarlet Letter, The Crucible, and Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God clearly shows
the harsh Calvinist ideals of the Puritan Age. These famous works depict the Puritan s strict social
justices, a gospel based legal system, and an overall societal fear of displeasing an unseen power in
any way. Every text set in this time can be characterized by its substantial theme of religion and God.
Historians have said that the Puritan laws and restrictions were some of the harshest in all of the early
American colonies. The people back then firmly believed that words of God were law, and any who
deviated from them deserved to be punished. This harsh punishment is a major theme in The Scarlet
Letter. The first pages of the novel depict Hester Prynne s punishment for committing adultery and
having a bastard child. For this crime, Hester is confined in prison, put on display on the scaffolding,
moved into insolation, and for the remainder of her life she is forced to wear, [o]n the breast of her
gown, in fine red cloth surrounded with an elaborate embroidery and fantastic flourishes of gold
thread, ... the letter A . (Hawthorne 51) This severe punishment, for what today is not even considered
a crime, was justified to the Puritans because of their unwavering belief in the rules of the Bible. In the
Puritan Era, there was no laws that separated the church and state. Rather, in tiis time the church was
the state. Government officials were elected to implement the laws of God and this system of humans
enforcing of the Bible carried into their judicial system. The Crucible is centered around the Salem
witch trials. People were sent to hang because of the testimonies of a few young girls. Though there
was no evidence other than the girls claims, the judges firmly believed that those accused of witchcraft
were guilty. This hysteria continued for many months, causing about twenty innocent people to be
hanged. The main reason for this prolonged insanity is the major flaws in the court system. Danforth,

Values And Values In Beowulf
Character can be easily identified through motivations and the decisions they influence. It also shows
what a culture or a person values as significant. The epic of Gilgamesh provides insight into the way
that Sumerian culture worked by focusing on certain aspects of day to day life. The same happens in
the epic of Beowulf, where the day to day life of each character sheds light on the values that the
Anglo Saxons prized, such as loyalty to family. The actions and motivations of characters in the epic
poem Beowulf showcase the Anglo Saxon mindset of the importance of family.
Beowulf s reason for coming to the Denmark is not simply to prove himself or to save the Danes out
of the goodness of his heart, but to repay his father s debt. Hrothgar points this out by saying:
There was a feud one time, begun by your father
... finally I healed the feud by paying: I shipped a treasure trove to the Wulfings and Ecgtheow
acknowledged me with oaths of allegiance ( Beowulf 459, 470 473) Beowulf acknowledges the debt,
showing that he feels bound by his father s mistakes. This gives the insight into Anglo Saxon culture
that mistakes and wrongdoings are not merely the responsibility of the people who make them, but
also their entire families. After Beowulf fights Grendel, Hrothgar speaks to him about how much he
loves him. He thanks Beowulf profusely for killing the monster, saying,
What you have done is draw two peoples, the Geat Nation and us neighboring Danes, into shared
peace

Difference Between Deep Ecology And Western Worldview
Every person has a different way of viewing the world that is based on what a our simple beliefs are
and with our basic beliefs and values. We are able to make sense of the world and to gain an
understanding of knowing where our place and purpose in the world, through this we are able to
choose between the behaviours of right and wrong. This is called the western worldview, where we
have an understanding of being placed in the world that is based on human dominance over nature, the
restricted use of natual resources, and increased economic growth to manage an expanding industrial
base (Linda R. Berg, 2008 ).
Western Worldviews on the Environment
When it comes to the environmental beliefs there two main worldviews, the Western worldview and
the deep ecology worldview. Although both of these worldviews are broad generalizations (Linda R.
Berg, 2008 ) they are at opposite ends of a range of different worldviews that are related to the the
issues of global ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Together, along with philospher George Sessions they discuss how deep ecology is an understanding
of knowing where we stand as humans in the world alongside nature and spiritual respect for life. It is
also knowing that both humans and other species are of equal earth (Linda R. Berg, 2008 , p. 32).
Unlike the Westen worldview, the deep ecology worldview constitutes an extreme shift in how
humankind can relate themselves to the environment (Linda R. Berg, 2008 , p. 32). Deep ecology
expressess that humans are no different to other species on the earth and that everything that breaths
life have the right to exist. It challenges individuals and cultures to share the same inner spirituality
that is connected to the natural world, but many people in this day in age have not embraced the
Western worldview or the deep ecology

The Athletes And Endurance Training
The summer Olympics of 2016 held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil averaged approximately 27.5 million
viewers. Many of these 27.5 million spectators watched the amazing performance given by Usain Bolt
in the Men s 100 meter and 200 meter sprints as he took gold in both races. Mo Farah also had
outstanding achievements at the Rio Olympics, earning gold medals in the Men s 5,000 and 10,000
meter races. Many pondered who the greatest runner in the world was if both these men were able to
produce the incredible feats they did in Rio with seemingly flawless execution. There is the question
of if endurance or speed wins out. Of course both these men are incredible athletes, but they did not
get to be gold medalists on pure chance alone. These men had to mold their bodies into running
machines, and the way they construct and maintain their machines is different for them both. Athletes
with endurance training, such as those who participate in marathons, have been found to have a higher
abundance of type I skeletal muscle whilst athletes who train for shorter length activities such as
sprinting, have been found to possess type II skeletal muscle in higher quantities. Other factors such as
composition of the different types of muscle, energy requirements for the muscles and the amount of
training also contribute to the runners different abilities. Type I skeletal muscle differ from type II in a
few ways. Some adaptations of type I muscle cells include, slow contraction speed, slow

  • 2. Aristotle And Aristotle s Philosophy Both Plato and Aristotle were prominent philosophers during their time and even today remain some of the most well known philosophers ever. Aristotle was a student of Plato s and Plato s influence was noticeable throughout Aristotle s work. Though Aristotle believed and would later teach a lot of Platonic philosophy, that did not mean that he agreed with everything that Plato taught. One thing that Aristotle would critique about Plato s teaching was his idea of what he called Forms and their role in the world. Although both Aristotle and Plato believed that something s form helped classify what it is, I found Aristotle s understanding of form to be more convincing because he believed that Forms consisted within the one world in which we all already live as opposed to Plato who thought that the world of Forms was separate from the world of everything else. Both men make very compelling points to back up their beliefs, but I just felt Aristotle s theory was more believable. For Plato, the sense of the forms was about the understanding of something higher. Plato believed that, when one beholds the Forms, one exercises Pure Reason, and one is like the liberated prisoner [from the allegory of the cave] who gazed upon the trees and mountains in the sunlit upper world (Palmer 67). Palmer simplified Plato s conception of the forms in saying that, Forms are the eternal truths that are the source of all Reality (Palmer 67). One example that Plato used to show this was by ... • 3. Paradox Of Thomas Gray Literature past and present is often a reflection of desire and intimacy, one s most inner thoughts feelings. A writers thoughts spilling onto the page, a cleanse of sorts. While other times it may be a commentary on society or a satire to highlight the numerous ills within a community of culture and so in many ways nothing has to remain unwritten, nothing can remain untouched by an authors hand, and yet even with seemingly all reaching grasp an author has when producing literature, there are however things that simply cannot be said the every looming unsayable that dictates that which must be left untouched, a paradox. But the question is not only what the unsayable is in context of time place, gender, and cultural influence, but what the accumulative role of the unsayable is within literature; this then leads to a discussion as to its role as a literary device. Thinking in paradoxes, poetry is both one of the most constrained, yet free forms of literature and a poet who particularly demonstrates the both as one and thus exploring the role of the unsayable is Thomas Gray. Gray s poetic style is often very much conforming to certain styles, especially in his sonnet [on the death of Richard West] , whereby he adheres to the common 14 lines that the sonnet form requires, while simultaneously having a rather scattered rhyme scheme of a,b,c,d. A,b,a,b. E,f,g,h, with the final couplet being g,h. The fact that the two are on opposing scales demonstrates Gray s ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Truth be told, it was not always smooth sailing for Netanyahu and for most parts, it was an uphill battle for him. Despite all the impediments he faced along the way, he remained focus, had confidence and exhibited persistence (some of the many qualities of a true leader) and he persevered to get where he is today. In 1963, Benjamin Netanyahu took residence in the United States of America, particularly in the state of Philadelphia where he and his family moved as a result of his father Benzion Netanyahu receiving academic post. Benjamin returned to Israel at age 18 and got enlisted in 1967 in the Israeli military where he became a soldier and spent five years. • 5. Analysis Of William Wordsworth s Macbeth Essay STORY ANALYSIS WORKSHEET The Protagonist: Romney Wordsworth The Protagonist s Chief Want: Wordsworth chief want is to reveal to the chancellor that every human being has purpose, worth, and a voice. The value of one s life is not simply based on his or her conformity to the various edicts set forth by the State. In order to achieve his chief want, Romney is willing to sacrifice his own life. At the end of the story, Romney relinquishes his life and the chancellor escapes. After Romney s death, it seems as though the chancellor learned nothing from his near death experience in Wordsworth room; yet, upon being pronounced obsolete , the chancellor desperately screams in anguish that his life contains purpose and worth. Thus, Wordsworth fulfilled his chief want through his life and death. The Inciting Incident: The inciting incident begins when the chancellor finds Wordsworth guilty of being an obsolete man. Wordsworth understands that merely arguing his position will yield unfruitful results; rather, he will only convince the chancellor through his actions. Antagonists: Antagonists: 1. The State believes that individuals, not contributing to the advancement of their perfect society, have no purpose. Declaring Romney Wordsworth vocation unneeded in their advanced society, the state, thus, seeks to liquidate him in order to maintain balance and harmony. 2. But despite everything, his mother continued to make him go to school; in addition, she also bought him a violin. Violin soon became one of his greatest passions, and he even stated himself, that playing the violin was what made him intelligent. His friend, G.J. There is, however, evidence behind Mozart and the slight improvement in test scores. It s effectiveness is shown through the results of an IQ test performed on three groups of college students. The first group listened to Mozart s Sonata for Two Pianos in D Major before taking the IQ test. The second group listened to a relaxation tape and the third group had nothing to listen to. The results showed that the first group s average had a difference of 9 points (119) compared to the third group (110), who had sat in silence, while the second group only had a one point increase from the group who sat in silence. So Mozart can increase your IQ up to 9 points, it may not be a huge, but there s still a noticeable difference. The system had students learn the same amount of grammar and vocabulary typically learned in one school term (about 1,000 words and phrases) taken in all within a day. To do this, he used certain classical music pieces from the Baroque period that contained the 60 beat per minute pattern in his lessons. • 10. Influence of Iliad to Troy First off, Homer s Iliad was the main source of influence for Wolfgang Petersen s film, Troy. However, even though it is directly influenced by the poem, Troy does not stay true to the poem for the entire movie. Some major difference s between Homer s Iliad and Wolfgang Petersen s film Troy, is that there was no mention of the Gods being participants in the battle of Troy. This was a major plot point in Homer s Iliad, as the Gods who fought on the battlefield had somewhat of an influence on the outcome of each battle and eventually the outcome of the war. By taking out the God element that the original poem had, Wolfgang Petersen has given the film more room for human emotions. This allows themes like love to be much more emphasised than ... Petersen s version of the Trojan war, stays true to the basic plot line of the actual Trojan war detailed in Homer s Iliad. However the basic plot line which Petersen retains is not enough to give viewers, details on what really happened in the Trojan war. Petersen sacrifices key plot points for themes that will appeal to the more modern audience as his version contains the drama that a modern audience loves and the theme of romance and love, which the modern audience also enjoys. This would not be the case for an ancient Greek audience, as the ancient Greeks preferred a much more violent, philosophical story, with literary opinions on the Gods, which they ... Build Your Redesign Vocabulary Organizations are constantly changing over time to keep up with internal and external environmental demands. When organizations are in the process of changing, an organizational redesign is in the works. The purpose of this assignment is to discuss redesign challenges that Community Health Center of Central Wyoming (CHCCW) faces during its redesign phase of organizational change. Fundamentals of Organizational Redesign Organizational redesign is the process in which changing an organization s informal design is due to shifting dynamics in the organization s environment (Spector, 2013, p. 78). This happens for a variety of reasons, and an organization should strategically consider both the internal and external environment for causes in the dynamic shift. Organizational redesign does not just effect policy and process development, but also the behaviors and norms of the organizational culture. One reason for leaders of an organization to consider an organizational redesign is financial status of the organization. This is the case for CHCCW. CHCCW has been in the process of an organizational redesign for lack of financial sustainability, along with improving the cultural and morale of the organization for the past couple of years. • 13. Difference Between Art And Contemporary Art Christian Casas Rafael Hernandez LIT3400 The Everyday A typical way of relating social/political issues to art assumes that art represents the thing one way or another. But there can be a more interesting perspective, which is looking at the field of art as a place of work. Basically look at what it does not what it shows. Amid all other forms of art, fine art has been associated with post Fordist ideology. Post Fordism is a popular system of economically based on production, consumption and has been in most industrialized countries since the late 20th century. Contemporary art is not an out of this world discipline hidden away in some remote building. In fact, it s the opposite because it positions itself in the thick of things. It can function as a brand name without a brand feeding off the bits and pieces of social and political issues. Presently, contemporary art has grown apart from important hubs, which gives the artist a wider range of production and provides various opportunities for showcasing the work. In contrast, this has not always been the case. Artist in novels about portraitures are depicted as servants due to the flow of cash. Art should be functioning on its own without the need of an institutional backing in order to create separation between the artist and their work as well as what the work can do . Portraits appear as an object already existing in the world and about whose producer and the process of production not much (most often nothing) needs ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 14. Racial Differences In Basketball Essay In my opinion, I definitely think there is a racial difference when it comes to athletic ability. For the most part, something that we can all agree on, is that we can see the racial differences in sports especially when it comes to basketball. When trying to find individuals who are good at playing basketball, most likely the team will consist of a majority of individuals who comes from an African descent. The question however is, why is this the case? I believe that there are two theories to explain this concept. The first theory that I feel like might be the answer is because, it is something that they have grown up and have done throughout several generations. When children see certain activities that are constantly repeated throughout their family, or those who look similar to them race wise, they feel like it is something that they have to do as well. If we view this situation in the eyes of a child who is African American, when he or she sees that there is a famous man from an African descent who is the best player within the entire basketball team, the child now believes that those who are black are better at playing basketball, which encourages the child to follow the footsteps of those who belongs in their race. However, if the same child watches a soccer match, the child sees that there isn t anyone on the soccer team who is black. So, in the child s mind, he or she is already making assumptions that, those who are African American are the ones who play ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Section 3 we discuss empirical implementation. We present the results of the decomposition for the Indian income tax in Section 4. Section 5 concludes. 2. Decomposing Income Tax Revenue Changes Before formally setting out the decomposition, we explain its logic. Comparisons of revenue performance are made with a pre selected (here pre reform) base year. In order to examine revenue loss, we define potential revenue at base year tax rates as the revenue that would obtain in the absence of base erosion due to deductions and evasion, if the base year tax rate structure was in operation. Conceptually, to arrive at potential revenue we tax potential DECOMPOSING REVENUE EFFECTS 179 income, which we take as given.6 Deductions and exclusions (other than for costs of earning income) cause taxable income to be narrower than potential income. Due to tax evasion by, for example, failing to file a return, understating receipts or overstating expenses, potential income itself may not be fully revealed to tax authorities. What the decomposition analysis does is to separate the difference between potential revenue and revenue actually collected in any year into components reflecting losses due to tax schedule changes, base erosion, and evasion. Potential revenues will, however, differ across years, even if the tax schedule is unchanged, due to changes in aggregate income and its distribution. To account for this, we normalize the difference ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 22. Hegemonic Masculinity Summary R.W. Connell s (1995) concept of hegemonic masculinity is the most significant theoretical device for understanding the masculinity hierarchy. Demetriou (2001) states how hegemonic masculinity expresses two different social practices, from a social constructivist view. The first is that men benefit from the patriarchal system of society. The second process is that there is an intramasculine hierarchy by which the social order of men is created and maintained. Connell (1995) argues that this is the reason for the societal gender order where not only do men uphold power over women, but also certain men are dominant over other men. Demetriou (2001) criticises Connell s term of hegemonic masculinity for being too broad, as the main focus is usually placed on the intramasculine process. He therefore believes this process to be internal hegemony (ibid). In terms of the intramasculine order , Connell argues that there is a specific type of masculinity that is revered the most and holds dominance over all other. Men who most closely exemplify this archetype are considered to hold the most social capital. In this model Connell states that gay men are at the bottom of the order and straight men that embody certain characteristics sit atop the hierarchy. Connell s model furthers Brannon s (1976) work. In this he suggests four rules by which men should follow. Hence, in Connell s (1995) model homophobia is a significant factor in sitting at the top of the hierarchy and ... In 399 BC, when Socrates was an old man, three citizens Meletus, Anytus and Lycon brought charges against Socrates. A trial was held. In ancient Athens the procedure was quite different from the present day. There was a jury of 500 men drawn from the citizens. Both the accusers and the defendant had to make speeches in person to the jury. Guilt or innocence was by majority vote. There was no preset penalty if the verdict was guilty . Both the accuser and the defendant would make speeches proposing what the penalty should be. Again, a vote was taken. There were two charges against him. The general theme was that Socrates was a menace to society. The first charge was of heresy, disbelief in the Gods. It was probably meant to cause prejudice amongst the jurymen. Actually, Socrates observed all the correct procedures of the religion of his times. The charge had been used successfully against another philosopher, Anaxagoras. The second charge was that he corrupted the youth with his teachings. What was meant by this? Apparently, this was not about his personal relationship with his pupils. It was about the way he was thought to influence their political views. His circle had included a number of right wing aristocrats whose ideas were now rejected by most citizens. The brilliant ... Today he is credited with many influential philosophical ideas and quotes, but one in particular An unexamined life is not worth living . What Socrates means by this quote is that a life without the pursuit of wisdom and knowledge is no life at all. Socrates reflects on this idea to his audience of jurors during his trial. The men of Athens felt threatened by Socrates, believing him spreading his philosophical ideas would disrupt their way of life and order in the city of Athens. Theoretical Frameworks I am going to theorize my study in the frameworks of New Literacy Studies (NLS), multimodality, and sociocultural identities theory. NLS looks at literacy learning in the 21st century as a social and cultural phenomenon; multimodality uses a variety of modes such as visual, audio, and spatial representations to achieve the purpose of meaning making; sociocultural identities theory focuses identity construction in social contexts where individuals interact with the social world such as their literacy activities of reading and writing in various social and cultural contexts; I will briefly introduce each individual theory and explain how they are going to connect with and help theorize this study. NLS perceives literacy learning as a social and cultural practice that should be understood and studied in a variety of contexts, including cognitive, social, cultural, historical, and institutional (Gee, 2009). One day the nurse from the hospital tells you that they can do Xenotransplantation where they use a chimpanzee heart in this case instead of a human heart. At first, you are nervous because it is a heart from a chimpanzee not a human but they reassure you that it is sterile and free of infection and disease and it could save her life. After telling you that, they tell you that after the last chimpanzee heart transplant the baby only lived 20 days which is longer than she would live without it because there are no human hearts available for her. • 46. Values And Values In Beowulf Character can be easily identified through motivations and the decisions they influence. It also shows what a culture or a person values as significant. The epic of Gilgamesh provides insight into the way that Sumerian culture worked by focusing on certain aspects of day to day life. The same happens in the epic of Beowulf, where the day to day life of each character sheds light on the values that the Anglo Saxons prized, such as loyalty to family. The actions and motivations of characters in the epic poem Beowulf showcase the Anglo Saxon mindset of the importance of family. Beowulf s reason for coming to the Denmark is not simply to prove himself or to save the Danes out of the goodness of his heart, but to repay his father s debt. Hrothgar points this out by saying: There was a feud one time, begun by your father ... finally I healed the feud by paying: I shipped a treasure trove to the Wulfings and Ecgtheow acknowledged me with oaths of allegiance ( Beowulf 459, 470 473) Beowulf acknowledges the debt, showing that he feels bound by his father s mistakes. This gives the insight into Anglo Saxon culture that mistakes and wrongdoings are not merely the responsibility of the people who make them, but also their entire families. After Beowulf fights Grendel, Hrothgar speaks to him about how much he loves him. Many of these 27.5 million spectators watched the amazing performance given by Usain Bolt in the Men s 100 meter and 200 meter sprints as he took gold in both races. Mo Farah also had outstanding achievements at the Rio Olympics, earning gold medals in the Men s 5,000 and 10,000 meter races. Many pondered who the greatest runner in the world was if both these men were able to produce the incredible feats they did in Rio with seemingly flawless execution. There is the question of if endurance or speed wins out. Of course both these men are incredible athletes, but they did not get to be gold medalists on pure chance alone. These men had to mold their bodies into running machines, and the way they construct and maintain their machines is different for them both. Athletes with endurance training, such as those who participate in marathons, have been found to have a higher abundance of type I skeletal muscle whilst athletes who train for shorter length activities such as sprinting, have been found to possess type II skeletal muscle in higher quantities.
