Cardiomyopathy (KAR-de-o-mi-OP-ah-thee) refers to diseases of the heart muscle. These diseases have many causes, signs and symptoms, and treatments.
In cardiomyopathy, the heart muscle becomes enlarged, thick, or rigid. In rare cases, the muscle tissue in the heart is replaced with scar tissue.
As cardiomyopathy worsens, the heart becomes weaker. It's less able to pump blood through the body and maintain a normal electrical rhythm. This can lead toheart failure or irregular heartbeats called arrhythmias (ah-RITH-me-ahs). In turn, heart failure can cause fluid to build up in the lungs, ankles, feet, legs, or abdomen.
The weakening of the heart also can cause other complications, such as heart valve problems.
OverviewThe main types of cardiomyopathy are:
Dilated cardiomyopathy
Hypertrophic (hi-per-TROF-ik) cardiomyopathy
Restrictive cardiomyopathy
Arrhythmogenic (ah-rith-mo-JEN-ik) right ventricular dysplasia
(dis-PLA-ze-ah)
Other types of cardiomyopathy sometimes are referred to as "unclassified cardiomyopathy."
Cardiomyopathy can be acquired or inherited. "Acquired" means you aren't born with the disease, but you develop it due to another disease, condition, or factor. "Inherited" means your parents passed the gene for the disease on to you. Many times, the cause of cardiomyopathy isn't known.
Cardiomyopathy can affect people of all ages. However, people in certain age groups are more likely to have certain types of cardiomyopathy. This article focuses on cardiomyopathy in adults.
OutlookSome people who have cardiomyopathy have no signs or symptoms and need no treatment. For other people, the disease develops quickly, symptoms are severe, and serious complications occur.
Treatments for cardiomyopathy include lifestyle changes, medicines, surgery, implanted devices to correct arrhythmias, and a nonsurgical procedure. These treatments can control symptoms, reduce complications, and stop the disease from getting worse.

Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. BASED ON PATHOLOGY
Transmural
associated with atherosclerosis involving a major
coronary artery.
It can be subclassified into anterior, posterior,
inferior, lateral or septal.
Transmural infarcts extend through the whole
thickness of the heart muscle and are usually a
result of complete occlusion of the area's blood
supply.In addition, on ECG, ST elevation and Q
waves are seen.

involving a small area in the subendocardial
wall of the left ventricle, ventricular septum,
or papillary muscles. The subendocardial area
is particularly susceptible to ischemia].In
addition, ST depression is seen on ECG.

Type 1 – Spontaneous myocardial infarction
related to ischemia due to a primary coronary
event such as plaque erosion and/or rupture,
fissuring, or dissection
Type 2 – Myocardial infarction secondary to
ischemia due to either increased oxygen
demand or decreased supply, e.g. coronary
artery spasm, coronary embolism, anaemia,
arrhythmias, hypertension, or hypotension

51. CLINICAL FEATURES
Chest pain
Pain in only one part of body, or it may move from
chest(SUBSTERNAL) to arms, shoulder, neck, teeth, jaw, belly
area, or back.
The pain can be severe or mild.
It can feel like:
A tight band around the chest
Bad indigestion
Something heavy sitting on chest
Squeezing or heavy pressure
The pain usually lasts longer than 20 minutes. Rest and a
medicine called nitroglycerin may not completely relieve the pain
of a heart attack. Symptoms may also go away and come back.

Other symptoms of a heart attack can include:
Anxiety
Cough
Fainting
Light-headedness, dizziness
Nausea or vomiting
Palpitations (feeling like your heart is beating too
fast or irregularly)
Shortness of breath
Sweating, which may be very heavy

A doctor or nurse will perform a physical
exam and listen to your chest using a
stethoscope.
The doctor may hear abnormal sounds in
lungs (called crackles), a heart murmur, or
other abnormal sounds.

55. MANAGEMENT
PHARMACOLOGICAL
Medications given to treat a heart attack include:
Aspirin
Aspirin reduces blood clotting, thus helping maintain blood flow
through a narrowed artery.
Thrombolytics
These drugs, also called clotbusters, help dissolve a blood clot that's
blocking blood flow to your heart.
Superaspirins
These include medications, such as clopidogrel (Plavix) and others,
called platelet aggregation inhibitors.
56. Other blood-thinning medications
.such as heparin, to make blood less "sticky" and less
likely to form more dangerous clots. Heparin is given
intravenously or by an injection under your skin and is
usually used during the first few days after a heart
attack.
Pain relievers
If chest pain or associated pain is great, you may
receive a pain reliever, such as morphine, to reduce
discomfort.
Nitroglycerin
This medication, used to treat chest pain (angina),
temporarily opens arterial blood vessels, improving
blood flow to and from heart.
57. Beta blockers.
These medications help relax heart muscle, slow
your heartbeat and decrease blood pressure
making heart's job easier. Beta blockers can limit
the amount of heart muscle damage and
prevent future heart attacks.
Cholesterol-lowering medications.
Examples include statins, niacin, fibrates and
bile acid sequestrants. These drugs help lower
levels of unwanted blood cholesterol and may
be helpful if given soon after a heart attack to
improve survival.
58. SURGICAL MANAGEMENT
Coronary angioplasty and stenting.
Emergency
angioplasty opens blocked coronary
arteries, letting blood flow more freely to your heart.
Doctors insert a long, thin tube (catheter) that's passed
through an artery, usually in your leg or groin, to a
blocked artery in your heart. This catheter is equipped
with a special balloon. Once in position, the balloon is
briefly inflated to open up a blocked coronary artery. At
the same time, a metal mesh stent may be inserted into
the artery to keep it open long term, restoring blood
flow to the heart. Depending on your condition, your
doctor may opt to place a stent coated with a slowreleasing medication to help keep your artery open.
59. Coronary artery bypass surgery. In some cases,
doctors may perform emergency bypass surgery
at the time of a heart attack. Usually, your
doctor may suggest that you have bypass
surgery after your heart has had time to recover
from your heart attack. Bypass surgery involves
sewing veins or arteries in place at a site beyond
a blocked or narrowed coronary artery
(bypassing the narrowed section), restoring
blood flow to the heart.

Take immediate action if patient reports pain or if
patients prodromal symptoms suggest anginal

Measure vital signs and observe for signs of
respiratory distress
Administer nitroglycerin sublingually and assess
patients response
Administer o2 therapy if patients respiratory rate is
increased
