DESCRIPTION OF COMMERCIAL VARIETIES AND
HYBRIDS IN PEA
 It is winter vegetable in plains and summer vegetable in
hills
 Based on growth habit, there are three types
1)Bush type
2) Medium Tall type
3) Tall type(pole type)
 The tender fully developed seeds are the economic part
 Based on the seed, the pea varieties are grouped into two types
1) Round Seeded or Smooth Seeded
2) Wrinkled Seeded
 Round seeded varieties are more tolerant to high temperature than
wrinkled seeded varieties
 The pods are harvested and used for either fresh market or freezing,
canning or dehydration

rainfed conditions and 12.9 t/ha
under irrigation
 Resistant to white fly

 It is a popular and widely
cultivated variety
 The green pod yield is about
100q/ha. The crop matures in 100
days giving a seed yield (sole
crop) of 15q/ha
 The seeds are wrinkled, green
having a 100 seed weight of 17g
 Being early, it escapes the attack
of powdery mildew, but under
late planting, it is highly
susceptible

 The yield of green pods is around 110q/ha.
 The crop matures in 130–135 days.
 The seed yield is about 11q/ha.
 This is highly susceptible to powdery mildew.

 This is a large pods-bearing variety.
 sickle-shaped pods
 the green pod yield being 100q/ha.
 seed yield is 10q/ha.
 This is highly susceptible to powdery mildew.

 The green pod yield is 50q/ha.
 It is susceptible to powdery mildew but may escape due to earliness.

 It matures in 125 days,

  • 2.  It is winter vegetable in plains and summer vegetable in hills  Based on growth habit, there are three types 1)Bush type 2) Medium Tall type 3) Tall type(pole type)  The tender fully developed seeds are the economic part
  • 3.  Based on the seed, the pea varieties are grouped into two types 1) Round Seeded or Smooth Seeded 2) Wrinkled Seeded  Round seeded varieties are more tolerant to high temperature than wrinkled seeded varieties  The pods are harvested and used for either fresh market or freezing, canning or dehydration

  • 5.  Early badger  Little marvel  Perfection  New line  Ooty-1  Azad  Arkel  Sylvia- Appearance as French bean. Suitable for late sowing Dwarf, early wrinkled seeded variety

Ooty 1  It is a pureline selection (PS- 33-1) among 40 germplasm types maintained at Horticultural Research Station, Ooty  The crop duration is 90 days  The plants are dwarf with dark green, long and smooth pods with 9 seeds  The crop yields 11.1 t/ha under rainfed conditions and 12.9 t/ha under irrigation  Resistant to white fly
  • 7. Arkel  It is a popular and widely cultivated variety  The green pod yield is about 100q/ha. The crop matures in 100 days giving a seed yield (sole crop) of 15q/ha  The seeds are wrinkled, green having a 100 seed weight of 17g  Being early, it escapes the attack of powdery mildew, but under late planting, it is highly susceptible
  • 8. Jawahar Matar 1  The yield of green pods is around 110q/ha.  The crop matures in 130–135 days.  The seed yield is about 11q/ha.  This is highly susceptible to powdery mildew. Jawahar Matar 2  This is a large pods-bearing variety.  sickle-shaped pods  the green pod yield being 100q/ha.  seed yield is 10q/ha.  This is highly susceptible to powdery mildew. Jawahar Matar 3  The green pod yield is 50q/ha.  It is susceptible to powdery mildew but may escape due to earliness.
  • 9. Jawahar Matar 4  The green pod yield is about 80q/ha  It matures in 125 days,  The seed yield is 8q/ha  The variety escapes from powdery mildew due to earliness
  • 10.  Jawahar Matar 5  A powdery mildew resistant garden pea  The green pods yield is 110q/ha  It matures in 130–140 days. The seeds are wrinkled and yellow  The seed yield is 12q/ha
  • 11.  Jawahar Peas 83  This is resistant to powdery mildew  The green pod yield is 125– 130q/ha  The crop matures in 125–130 days  The seeds are wrinkled, yellow and medium-sized  The seed yield is 13–16q/ha
  • 12.  Pantnagar Matar 2  Green pod yield is bout 50q/ha  The crop matures in 110 days  The seed yield is about 5q/ha  The seeds are wrinkled, green and medium- sized  This variety suffers badly due to powdery mildew attack.
  • 13. Pusa Pragati  Pods are long (10 cm)  First picking in 60-65 days  Resistent to powdery mildew  Yield 70 q/ha Pusa Himlata  Its plants are vine type  Its beans are long, fleshy, light green string less and straight  Its seeds can be used as rajmash  Yield is 17-20 t/ha
  • 14. Asauji  From IARI, New Delhi  Early variety, Bush type  pods are ready for harvest in 60 DAS Bonneville  It is a medium tall, mid season variety  Seeds are light green and wrinkled Alaska  Early, heat tolerant, canning variety
  • 15. Lincoln  Introduced from France  Early season variety  Mature seeds wrinkled  Yield – 8-10 t / ha ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------  Resistant to rust and powdery mildew: Arka Karthik and Arka Sampoorna
