Cognitive Reading Strategies - Overview

  • 6. think about how what they already know relates to what they’re reading. think about how their personal experiences relate to what they are reading. think about how what they’re reading connects to themselves, to other texts they’ve read, and to the world.
  • 8. consider the author’s purpose – inform, entertain, or persuade. preview titles and subtitles and other visual clues on the page. think about what’s been read and what might happen next. support predictions with evidence.
  • 10. can jot down questions they have about the text as they’re reading. identify what is significant or important information in the text. understand the different kinds of thinking needed to answer different types of questions. formulate questions to self-test for understanding and recall.
  • 12. picture in their minds what’s happening in the text. can draw a sketch or symbol to represent what they have read. recognize sensory images. picture characters, setting, and action.
  • 14. use multiple strategies to make sense of text. reread text when necessary for understanding. discuss what they’re reading. summarize parts before going on. clear-up confusing vocabulary.
  • 16. can restate what they’ve read in their own words. know how to select the main idea and most important parts from the text. can leave out unnecessary or redundant information. can combine and organize ideas from different sources.
  • 18. stand back after finishing a text and ask, “So what?” dig deeper to uncover the message or theme of the story. consider how their understanding of the meaning of the text changes as they read. consider how the theme or big idea relates to their own lives.
  • 20. notice words, phrases and figurative language that the author is using. think about the author’s style and its effectiveness. can pick out words, lines, phrases, sections and describe why they were meaningful. attempt to use similar strategies in their own writing.
