What is a learning strategy?
0 A learning strategy is a person's approach to learning
and using information. Learning strategies are used
by students to help them understand information and
solve problems.
0 Learning strategy instruction focuses on making the
students more active learners by teaching them how
to learn and how to use what they have learned to
solve problems and be successful.
0 We can find two types: METACOGNITIVE and
COGNITIVE
Cognitive Strategies
0This kind of learning strategies
make a process in which the learner
captures the necessary information
manipulating it for the good
exercise of the learning.
Cognitive strategies
0 In this strategies we can find so many process like:
0 Repetition, when imitating others speech
0 Resourcing, having recourse to dictionaries and
other materials
0 Translation, that is, using their mother tongue as a
basis for understanding and/or producing the
target language
0 Note-taking
0 Deduction
Cognitive strategies
0 Contextualization, when embedding a word or
phrase in a meaningful sequence
0 Transfer
0 Inferencing, when matching an unfamiliar word
against available information (a new word etc)
0 Question for clarification, when asking the teacher
to explain, etc.
Metacognitive strategies
0 This type of strategies consist in the different kind of
resources that the learner can use to plan, take control and
evaluate the learning development
0 Directed attention, when deciding in advance to
concentrate on general aspects of a task
0 Selective attention, paying attention to specific aspects
of a task
0 Self-monitoring, i.e., checking one's performance as one
speaks
0 Self-evaluation, i.e., appraising one's performance in
relation to one's own standards
0 Self-reinforcement, rewarding oneself for success.

Cognitive and metacognitive strategies

  • 2. What is a learning strategy? 0 A learning strategy is a person's approach to learning and using information. Learning strategies are used by students to help them understand information and solve problems. 0 Learning strategy instruction focuses on making the students more active learners by teaching them how to learn and how to use what they have learned to solve problems and be successful. 0 We can find two types: METACOGNITIVE and COGNITIVE
  • 3. Cognitive Strategies 0This kind of learning strategies make a process in which the learner captures the necessary information manipulating it for the good exercise of the learning.
  • 4. Cognitive strategies 0 In this strategies we can find so many process like: 0 Repetition, when imitating others speech 0 Resourcing, having recourse to dictionaries and other materials 0 Translation, that is, using their mother tongue as a basis for understanding and/or producing the target language 0 Note-taking 0 Deduction
  • 5. Cognitive strategies 0 Contextualization, when embedding a word or phrase in a meaningful sequence 0 Transfer 0 Inferencing, when matching an unfamiliar word against available information (a new word etc) 0 Question for clarification, when asking the teacher to explain, etc.

Metacognitive strategies 0 This type of strategies consist in the different kind of resources that the learner can use to plan, take control and evaluate the learning development 0 Directed attention, when deciding in advance to concentrate on general aspects of a task 0 Selective attention, paying attention to specific aspects of a task 0 Self-monitoring, i.e., checking one's performance as one speaks 0 Self-evaluation, i.e., appraising one's performance in relation to one's own standards 0 Self-reinforcement, rewarding oneself for success.
