Charles Dickens had a difficult childhood, being forced to work in a factory at age 12 after his father was sent to debtors' prison, which influenced his later writing career. He found success as a writer in his early 20s with works like Sketches by Boz and The Pickwick Papers. Dickens became one of the most popular authors in England and made two tours of the United States, though he was disappointed by aspects of American society. He died at his home, Gad's Hill Place, in 1870 at the age of 58 while working on a new novel.
