CHAPTER 9
TRAIN THE TRAINER
PLANNING A TRAINING SESSION
4/22/2021
2
• The planning process must obviously start with
the identification of training need which will
lead to the definition of target population and
topic.
• The Aims and Objectives of the training
session must then be carefully thought out.
These will help identify suitable teaching
methods and lesson structure.

• Teaching Methods include lectures, lessons
demonstrations, discussions, case studies,
discovery methods, tutorials, projects, games;
roles play exercise, simulations, programmed
learning, directed private study, individual
practice, brainstorming, seminars and
debates.

Lesson Structure will usually consist of:
i. An introduction, linking with previous
sessions (if appropriate), motivating the
trainees, and giving an overview of the
present session;
ii. Teaching points, clearly and logically
presented; and
iii. A conclusion, summarizing the session and
reinforcing key points, testing the objectives,
and linking to the future sessions.

Visual Aids should be used where appropriate to
aid understanding, always remember that:
• -the best aid is often the real material
• -if other aids are used they should be
designed to illustrate a specific point simply
and clearly

At this stage a Training session plan can be
construed, with the aims and objectives, outline
lesson structure (including timing), and list of
equipment for aids recorded.
Now you have decided how you plan to teach
the session. Before you go any further consider
the session from the Learner’s point of view.

7
Motivation-will the trainees see the relevance of
what they are doing, will they understand the
information given, and will they be sufficiently
stimulated by the approach?
Organisation –is the timing realistic for the
target population? Is the material presented in a
logical sequence, building on the trainee’s
existing experience? Is there sufficient variation
in activity to hold the trainee’s attention?

8
Trainee Involvement –Will the trainees be
actively involved in the session? What notes (if
any) do you want them to take?
The Training Session Plan is not suitable for
use in the lesson; Training notes should be
prepared for this purpose.
These take the lesson structure from the training
session plan and add the detailed technical
information required in the session.
