2. INTRODUCTION:
Buddhist system of education was a new system of
education was developed by Buddhist
Monk,(Bikshus) which was known as Buddhist
system of education.
Buddhist system of education was mostly given in
Math and Viharas.
During this period of education was considered to be
as the process or mean to achieve the knowledge.
Buddhist system of education was totally based on
Darshan, Spiritual control.
3. MAIN FEATURES OF BUDDHIST
EDUCATION:
Administration and Finance:
A) Control of Buddhist are on Sanghas over education so not
an individual basis.
It is patronized by kings (states).
Here buildings are prepared by kings and handed over to the
Bikshus.
Free Primary education, here Primary education was free of
cost and Higher education students have to pay some amount
of fees.
4. Structure and Organization of
education:
Primary education
A) Prabajja ceremony or Sanskar
Its start from 6 to 12 years of age mostly in Maths and
Viharas, During admission time Prabajja ceremony
was conducted.
The student took oath in front of Head Bikshus
Buddham sharnam Gachami
Dham sarnam Gachami
Sangham sarnam Gachami.
The students are called as Sharman or Samner

The student have to take 10 Sikhapadani,
Follow Non-Violence
Speak truth
Develop moral character
Not accepting outside things
Do not wear Alms, Gold, Silver, Bronze,
Then took admission.
6. HIGHER EDUCATION:
It starts from 12 year of age and complete at the age
of 20-25 age complete.
Bikshu education:
When higher education got completed then they
spread religious education.
If he wants to be in teaching they have to undergo
UPPASAMPADA CEREMONY.
Those student go back to their family life they went,
and those who want to for Bikshu education undergo
for Upsampadda Ceremony

Student have to take oath :
A) Sleep under the tree
B) begging system
C) Having food in the same utensil
D) They have to wear simple clothes
E) Do not steeling something
F) Do not do killing.
8. Bikshu education:
Bikshus education begins at the age of 8 years here
they are able to give religious education.
Celibacy means nit to married, Follow Sanghas rules
and regulations.
If any news is found untruth, whether it belongs to
Student or Teacher he should be out of the Sanghas.
But one thing is different in Buddhist education i.e.
student choose their own teacher.
9. AIMS AND IDEALS OF BUDDHIST
EDUCATION:
Development of knowledge means “Nirvan ki prapti”
is the main aim of education.
Buddhist system of education is totally based on
Darshan.
Education of social behavior: Human welfare. Which
emphasis on Passion and Kindness.
Student have to teach social behavior , so that they
can develop social behavior towards themselves.

Buddha says these words:
“Sansar dukh me hai”
“Inse chutkara pana sambhav hai”
“Chutkara hi niravan hai”
“Nirvan ki prapti ke liye Jap Tap nahi balki manav
kalyan ki bhavna utpann honi chaiye”
11. CIRRCULUM OF HIGHER
EDUCATION:
Duration is 12 years.
Subjects like, Grammar, Religious education,
Astrology, Ayurveda and Philosophy after then
specific education was given.
Curriculum of Bikshus education:
Duration is 8 years.
Those Bikshus who intended to acquire higher
knowledge in Buddhist religion and philosophy
continue their education, again they have to took oath
i.e. 10 Sikhapadani, plus 8 more.
Curriculum Triptak - 3 Baskets and comparative
study of different religion.
12. HIGHER EDUCATION:
Provision for specialization in any of the field.
Higher education divided into two parts:
Wordly curriculum, Religious curriculum.
In Wordly curriculum: For General students, Buddhist,
Jain, Hindu religion. Reading, Writing, Maths, Arts,
Skills, and vocational education.
Religious curriculum: Bikshu education- Hre Tripatak,
Sumant Vinay Dham, Practical knowledge, Maths,
Adminstration should be taught.
13. METHODS OF TEACHING IN
BUDDHIST EDUCATION:
Imitation method.
Question and Answer method
Explanation method
Debate method
Conference method
Demonstration & Practice method.
Self Study method.
14. DISCIPLINE:
Generally students have to follow rules and
regulations of Sanghas , Maths and Viharas.
Those who want to pursue Bikshus education had to
follow eight more rules.
Tough discipline
Rules should follow by teacher and student and both
of them keep an eye.
15. TEACHER IN BUDDHIST
EDUCATION:
Teacher are called as (Upadhyaya), Follow rules and regulations of Maths
and their instructions was followed by students itself.
If a student and Teacher not follow the rules and regulations of the Maths,
Viharas, they should be punished.
There are some preconditions for students:
A) Not to marry
B) self control
C) Moral should be high
8 years Bikshus education, 12 yr Higher education.
16. STUDENTS:
Students are called as Shraman or Shamner.
They have to follow rules and regultions of Maths
and Viharas strictly.
17. TEACHER STUDENT
RELATIONSHIP:
Teacher treat the students just like as their Son.
Students treat their teachers just like as their father.
There is a panel of Bikshus who took examination
and degrees, were oral exam is conducted and if
they satisfied with the answers they promote
students in next class.
There is no process of written examination.
18. Examination centers:
There is no examination and degree distribution
process during Buddhist education.
But they have the centers were all exam in conducted
like:
Taxila University.
Nalanda University.
Vallabhi and Vikramshila University.
