Existing Products Research
– Adam22 Show
This is more of an interview/documentary type
podcast/radio show, it features a lot of musical
content related to what they speak about in the
podcast, there is also a short piece of intro music at
the beginning of every show but the main focus is
music. Its far from the final product I would produce
but I thought to include it in my product research
because the vocal style is interesting. There is no
sound effects or music in the background
Existing Products Research
– Lets read podcast – Horror Stories
The show uses ambient noises in the background
underneath the dialogue to add effect and uses
ambient noises to transition between stories. There
was no use of music throughout the whole podcast
which adds certain creepy atmosphere throughout
the podcast. The readers voice is very monotone but
it also adds an atmosphere in its own way. I want to
incorporate the silence into my project because its
extremely minimal but effective.
Existing Products Research
Price Of Fear
Intro music, no music used after the introduction until the
climax of the story, the voice was engaging and moved with
the story, it wasn’t monotone, other actors were used in the
show which made it a lot more easy to listen to, there was a
lot of sound effects that made you feel a lot more immersed
in the show even though there is no visuals which even
makes it a lot more interesting than some modern podcasts.
The producers describe the environment and setting really
well and allow you to visualise it in your mind really easily. I
want to incorporate the style of sound effects used in this
because especially for the era they are really good.

Ideas
Story
• People on a camping trip telling scary stories,
stories come to life, people get killed le ded
Idea Generation/Initial Reaction
• My initial thoughts to the project is that it
could be interesting to do because there is
many different possibilities to explore and
work with.
Proposal
Working Title: The tale of the missing mouse
What is it called? This can change if you think of something better later
Audience:
My audience is 16-18 year old males. My project would appeal to this demographic because they tend to enjoy
the horror genre more than the rest of the different age category’s.
Project Concept
My project is going to be a short podcast style horror story, its going to be around 5-8 minutes
long and include an opening piece of music , during the research I learnt how to use audition
which I will use to add effects. I will use Garage band to make the music for my podcast, using
synths drums and piano. During my research I found many possibilities I could explore, such as the
possibility of doing it in a podcast style, but ultimately I am going to do the story style.
Experiments
Foley
• A lot of the recording in my foley experiment
went well, sounding clean and like it should be
in the project. I could of improved on a few
sounds quality throughout the project. I have
learnt how to use a sound recorder and sync
up audio to film.
Recording
• Recording outside makes the recording around a
lot more wet and less echoey than if you record
inside. When recording inside the recordings are
very dry and have a lot less background noise
than outside
• When recording for the foley experiment sounds
happening outside we needed to record outside
and the same for inside, because it didn’t sound
right
Garage Band
• I experimented with creating soundtracks in
Garage band which I found difficult due to not
having access to a midi keyboard or a drum
pad but I found some nice sounds to use. I
found some good sounding soundscapes I can
use throughout my project.

Resource Owned/Cost What sound effect will it be
used for?
Production
Daily Reflection Day 1
• I recorded my main audio clip for my story and
added effects such as reverb to the parts that
needed it. I also recorded necessary sound
effects to my project. For this I used garage
band and Adobe Audition.
Daily Reflection Day 2
• I created a short soundtrack for my project,
added it to the main audio and added the
necessary sound effects in the correct places. I
used Garage band for this.
Daily Reflection Day 3
• I finalized my main audio and compressed it
down into one file. I added extra sound effects
to the project to give it extra depth. I added
layers of background noise to make it sound
more realistic. I used Garage band and Adobe
audition for this.
Evaluation
Research helped my project because it gave me
a lot of clarity and ideas I could use for my own
project. Some strengths of my research was that
it was in depth and showed me a lot of different
types of audio types and styles I could use.
Planning
Planning helped my end product, like the
planning, giving me clarity so I could easily finish
the project in good time. Some strengths were
writing the drfats for the script. I could of
improved my planning by possibly adding more
depth to it.
Time Management
I think I have managed my time extremely well
on this project, finishing my actual audio in 3
days and completed most of the written work a
week before the final deadline.
Technical Qualities
I think my work is quite technically detailed. I used some foley
techniques to make sound effects such as walking on different
surfaces to get different walking sounds. To record all of the audio
apart from sfx I used a condenser microphone and for the sfx I used
a hand held audio recorder.
Comparing my work to The Price of Fear, a similar radio horror story
show its similar in its narration style with it switching between
narration and performance. I also chose to similarly recreate the
foley style used in that too. Its different in many technical aspects
especially with the recording equipment obviously being a lot newer
and having many more readily available foley effects to use.
Aural Qualities
I think my work overall sounds okay but could
improve in some areas, such as leveling on some
of the sounds. I would of made the narration a lot
louder and some of the sound effects a lot
quieter. I think the use of continuous background
music makes it sound a lot more interesting too. A
strength was making the background music in
garage band but a weakness was mastering the
overall end product because its very limited to do
in garage band and audition.
Audience Appeal
I think the overall appeal of my is quite high
because it fits into most of the criteria for a 16-21
year old audience with it being relatively short but
engaging. I think the story as a whole is appealing
to my target audience because it switches a lot
between narration and storyline, it also has a lot of
sound effects to keep the audience engaged

Editor's Notes

  1. Go over as many slides as necessary. Research at least 3 products. Discuss the use of sound effects, music and performance. How have the producers suggested a location/time period and created a tone/feel Try to break down what you can hear. How do the different sound elements work together? How do sound effects add to the drama? What part does music play in the work? Try to listen to a variety of different types of radio programme. If you listen to drama and documentary, you will give yourself a better understanding of what exists and what is possible. It will also help guide your project.

  4. Using Neil’s Toolbox, log all the resources you have used
  5. Provide a brief summary of the story/stories you have chosen
  6. Log your initial thoughts regarding the set brief- What stories could you use? How do you feel about the different potential formats? What are the positives about this project? What could be some difficult aspects? Create a mind map of all the things you need to think about for your project.
  7. Initial draft of your script. This should then be refined.
