3. Research
• By conducting primary research I learned that my podcast should have an upbeat intro track to grab the
listeners attention and that it sounds the best when it slightly fades out and overlaps the beginning of the
voiceover.
• From listening to the existing products, I learnt that if you spend too much time talking about a single
topic that it can become boring, so to ensure that I kept my audiences attention, I kept my voiceover short
and to the point.
• Also, when I listened to the existing products I found it a little boring when the host waffled on and went
off topic, so I made sure that I stuck to the topic that I was talking about to ensure that my audience
wouldn’t find my product boring.
• A weakness of my research was that I could only find podcasts that had several hosts discussing the topic,
so I wasn’t able to see how a single host presents their information.
• Another weakness of researching an existing product was that, without realising, it led me to alter one of
the games that I was going to mention as a later topic in my podcast, to one that I had heard about in one
of the podcasts. It wasn’t until looking back at my initial plans that I realised I had even altered my idea.
However, the Kingdom Hearts 3 game that I mentioned still fit perfectly within my podcast and was still
relevant for my target audience and had I made the full podcast, then I would have been offering a more
diverse genre of games which would have appealed to a wider audience.
• If I had conducted quantitative or qualitative research in the form of surveys or interviews, I perhaps could
have gotten some early feedback on whether my target audience would enjoy listening to my podcast. But
then if they didn’t like the idea then I would have had to change my idea entirely and that would have cost
me a lot of time. Not to mention, the scale on which I could conduct both types of research would be so
small, it wouldn’t be large enough to accurately represent my target audience, if I took my product into
the real world.
4. Planning
• My planning helped me with my product because after creating my mind map in my
initial plans, I already had a clear idea of what I wanted to talk about and what my
target audience would be. I did stray slightly away from what side topics I would
mention, as I’d planned those out in my mind map, but the later topics I did refer to,
still fit my primary and secondary audiences and would have appealed to a larger
audience.
• By completing the hardware/props and resources within my pre-production planning, I
was able to plan what equipment I needed to use in order to create my product; this
saved me a lot of time when it came to producing my podcast.
• By completing my contingency planning within my pre-production, I knew exactly what
to do when the volume levels of my voiceover, sound effects and music were at
different levels. I simply altered the volumes until they sounded consistent, which saved
me time and reduced the pressure of finding a solution.
• A weakness of my planning was that I had written my script in a way that gave me audio
cues as to what topics I needed to talk about and how long I had to discuss them. When
it came to recording my script I really struggled to know what to say without visual cues
from a game or video so, in the end, I had to revise my script with a full narration to
read out. This worked perfectly, though, as it meant that within a few attempts I had
successfully recorded my voiceover. However, it did cost me valuable time that I could
have better used elsewhere, sourcing or recording sound effects.
5. Time Management
• Yes, I feel that my time management went very well for producing my product. I was
able to produce my podcast within the time scale that I had planned because I had a
clear schedule to follow in my Pre-Production planning.
• A few things that did go wrong when producing my product were that the script I had
planned was too vague, so I had to revise it and write a speech and that the Two Point
Hospital radio advert that I wanted to use was over the 30 second rule. If I were to take
the product in to the real world I would have caused a copyright issue so I had to source
a new clip. However, by planning out my schedule in detail, I had allowed for a small
margin of error, so therefore these two issues didn’t cost me any production time.
• By completing my contingency planning, I ensured that I recorded in a quiet
environment, so that I didn’t end up with any unwanted background noise in my
recording. This ensured that I didn’t have to spend additional time re-recording my
voiceover.
• If I had additional time to produce my product, I think it would have been good for me
to gain some extra knowledge on audio creation. Audio work is definitely not my strong
point, because I just do not understand much about sound editing and such. With
additional time I maybe could have learnt different ways to edit my sound and
therefore improve the quality and appeal of my podcast.
6. Technical Qualities
GamingCast
Podcast
Existing
Product
• Both the existing product and my podcast have a musical intro track which fades out, with the voiceover
overlapping. The existing product’s intro, fades out for a longer period of time, where as my product’s intro
fades out within 5 seconds. I made it shorter so that it kept the audience engaged.
• In the existing product, when the intro begins, the hosts speak in a very fast paced tempo, which I found a little
bit too frantic. In my product I tried to make my intro dialogue upbeat and enthusiastic but at a reasonable
tempo for it not to sound rushed.
• Both products have clear audio with no background noises making it easy to listen to. I used a professional
microphone to record my audio and ensured that I recorded in a quiet environment to achieve this. Also, in
both the existing product and my product, the voiceovers are spoken in a clear and easy to understand way.
The tempo of the existing products dialogue is at times slightly fast paced, but in an enthusiastic way so that
it’s not difficult to keep up with. The tempo of my dialogue is slower and more evenly paced but not too slow
as to bore the audience.
• In the existing product the structure for the topics of conversation is very loose and vague. So without listening
to it all the way through, the audience doesn’t know whether the podcast is worth listening to, whereas in my
product I made it clear what topics would be discussed and kept it structured.
• In the existing product the hosts have a very informal discussion which often deviates slightly from the topic of
conversation and is based on their thoughts on the topic, whereas in my product I stuck to the topic of
conversation and gave a more informative narration, this made it easier for me to edit.
• The existing product has mostly just talking audio, apart from around 17-18mins where a very short intro track
plays and an advert begins to play. In my product I tried to make it more appealing by added in a sound effect
in order to create excitement about the topic, I used a short transitional intro track to introduce the topic of
conversation and I added in a fake advert for humour which is from the Two Point Hospital game which is the
main topic of conversation.
7. Aural Qualities
• I feel that my work does sound good. The audio is clear and free from background noises. I used a
professional microphone to record my audio, to ensure that the quality of the sound would be clear
and made sure that I recorded in a quiet environment to avoid unwanted noises.
• The narration is clear and easy to understand, to achieve this I made sure that I spoke clearly into
the microphone, ensuring that I wasn’t sat too close to it. I paced my voiceover so that it was easy
to follow and enunciated each word, so that my dialogue was understandable.
• I feel the sounds effects and intro music used, fade in and out well with the voiceover and the
volume levels sound consistent.
• I feel that my work was creative. I edited a small clip from an existing song to create an upbeat
intro. I recorded a radio advert clip from the Two Point Hospital game to link in with the topic,
mostly for added humour and I added in a short intro/outro using a clip of Kingdom Hearts 3 music
to introduce the topic and end the podcast.
• The main improvement I would make is that after I recorded the initial intro at around 38secs, the
voiceover sounds slightly different and a bit more serious. This is because I recorded the voiceover
in two halves. If I had chance I would re-record that part of the audio, to make it sound similar to
the intro speech.
• As an additional idea, I wanted to see what my audio would sound like with background music.
Unfortunately, I couldn’t find any that were suitable and that wouldn’t distract from the topic of
discussion. Instead, I decided it would be better to leave it without music and keep the audio clear
and easy to listen to.

8. Audience AppealGamingCast
Podcast
To make my product appeal to my primary target gender, females, I used an upbeat intro track and
spoke about the Two Point Hospital Interior Designer update as I feel this update would appeal to
them. Also I am a female host and by talking about a game I feel passionate about, they may connect
with me, more than they would a male host.
To make my product appeal to my secondary target gender, males, I talked about a hospital
management simulation game, which fits into the simulation/strategy genre which is typically aimed at
men.
To make my product appeal to my primary age group, 16-24 years, the topics of conversation were
about current popular games
To make my product appeal to my secondary age group, 25-44 years, the main topic of conversation
that I spoke about is a remake of an older game, which has been anticipated and desired for a long
time.
To make my product appeal to my primary psychographic, Belongers, and to my primary
socioeconomic status, the working class, because I talked about a free update for a branded game,
which is highly desired and affordably priced. Also the other topics that I mentioned that would be
discussed later in the podcast are also reasonably priced games.
My product will appeal to my secondary psychographic, Achievers, because the update that I talked
about would give them the opportunity to customise the rooms of their hospitals, appealing to their
need to be individual and unique.
My product will appeal to my secondary socioeconomic status, the middle class, because I have
recorded a well-spoken podcast, with no bad language and the game being discussed is a reasonably
priced brand game which they can definitely afford.
10. Feedback 1
• What did you like about the product?
– The product is vocally well delivered with clear pronunciation.
Each section cleverly closed with sound effects which works well to start and
finish the different topics covered.
The presenter comes across passionate and seems genuinely interested in the
topics. They explain the product well and make it sound exciting.
The sound quality of the product appears fluent, throughout.
Overall a clear, well presented podcast, with great use of sounds, creating
some elegant humorous moments and delivering a lot of information to the
listener in a short space of time.
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
– The only improvement I would make is that it is a nice idea to play an
advertisement as it fades in well, but it seemed to end a bit abruptly.
11. Feedback 2
• What did you like about the product?
– The podcast starts with a suitably-short, pleasant and simple tune, and this fades out
nicely into a clear and up-beat welcome and introduction of the host and the topics to
be covered. Unlike some podcasts with rambling introductions, this engaged me within
seconds, rather than prompting me to hit the stop button. The introduction began by
mentioning other topics to be covered later in the program, which increased my
engagement. I also liked the short jingles interspersed with the content. Again, these
were short and simple and were not in any way intrusive.
– The content of the podcast itself was well-scripted and delivered in a natural, pleasant
and upbeat, suitably-journalistic voice and professional manner, and it gave the
impression that the podcaster knew and was enthusiastic about their subject. The
podcaster gave clear descriptions of what the product was about, which encouraged the
listener to have a look at the product after the podcast. I was pleasantly surprised to find
that the product was actually a free update, and given what I was told about the
product, I would probably have gone to the web site to get hold of it and give it a go.
The presentation catered not only for the creative consumer, but also for those without
those abilities.
• What improvements could have been made to the product?
– I really can't think of any improvements that could have been made to this delightful
piece.
– There was an advert in the podcast, and I am not keen on adverts in programming,
however, the advert was pleasant-enough and, like the podcast itself, was not noisy and
had an element of humour.
12. Feedback 3
• What did you like about the product?
– The sound effects give nice additional context and bring in the
audience
– The delivery is clear and done with enthusiasm which engages
the listeners.
– The content is well structured and doesn’t go off topic. It is also
well researched and informative.
• What improvements could have been made to the
product?
– The advert isn’t clear it is from a game if the audience are
unfamiliar with it, this could lead them to think it is a genuine
advert which is misleading.
– Other guests or views/opinions from others could be a good
segment as it is currently only one presenters opinion.
13. Peer Feedback Summary
• What do you agree with from your peer
feedback?
– I agree that the radio advert that I used from the Two Point Hospital game, could be perceived
as a real advert and therefore be misleading. I used it to add humour and thought that the
people who would be most interested in the update news would be fans of the game already.
It was an oversight on my part that it could be thought of as real.
– I agree that the podcast could have been more interesting with more hosts. So that it’s a
discussion rather than a delivery of information. This however wasn’t possible for me to create
and also I find when there’s multiple people talking it can lead to the topic of conversation
going off track. However, I maybe could have given more in depth thought on how I feel about
the update being discussed rather than just sticking to the script.
• What do you disagree with from your peer
feedback?
– From the feedback given, I’ve found it hard to find something to disagree with, because
overall the feedback was very positive. The only real thing I could disagree with slightly is how
to end the radio advert and fade it out into the voiceover. I couldn’t fade out the end of it as it
would have ruined the effect of it, but I maybe could have altered the timing of my voiceover.
14. Peer Feedback Summary
From reading the peer feedback, the main thing I would change about my product
would be the advert. On reflection, although the advert was mostly received with
humour, as it was intended, it probably could be seen as an unnecessary intrusion to a
useful piece of information and could be perceived as a real advert.
The advert did end a bit abruptly or my voiceover started too fast. If I was able to make
changes to the product, I would try to find a way to blend the two better. Fading out the
radio advert would have ruined the ending, but maybe I could have put more of a delay
on when my voiceover restarted, or use a small intro clip, reintroducing the
conversation.
Also, I would try to find one or two more hosts to join in the conversation, to at least
see if I feel it works. That way it would a more diverse opinion on the topics discussed
and would create more of a discussion. At least then it would give me the cues I need to
not have to read from a script.
Overall, the feedback was extremely positive and the general feeling about my product
was that it was clear, interesting, engaging and cleverly put together, which makes me
feel really happy about the product I created.
