3. Research
• There where many strengths of my research, for example because of my
research I was able to take inspiration from existing popular podcasts that are
praised for their high production value. I think doing this helped my podcast
out exponentially, some of the things I included in my work I wouldn’t have if I
didn’t research. Another strength was making myself more familiar with the
podcast style of media, I have no previous experience with anything to do with
podcasts, so my research improved my knowledge which definitely had a
positive effect on my finished product. A weakness of my research is probably
that I didn’t do enough of it, I was slightly behind at the time of conducting my
research and had to finish off previous work, so I didn’t get to conduct as
much research as I would have liked. Another weakness was not getting
specific with my research, I mainly researched generally and never thought to
do any research on the exact type of podcast I was doing (fashion/music
podcast). I could have improved my time management which would have
allowed me to conduct more research, I also could have conducted more
specific research for my podcast. These 2 improvements would have
dramatically increased the quality of my work.
4. Planning
• There where many strengths of my planning, one for example was the fact
that in the podcast keeping up consistent conversation was extremely easy
since I had already planned all of the topics we where going to talk about and
had it on display, this helped a lot with the quality of my work. Another
strength was that because I had already planned the set and how it was going
to be composed, when it came to the actual day of filming production I could
quicky and efficiently set up the set so that we could get on with doing the
actual production as fast as possible. A weakness of my planning was that I
didn’t really plan for anything to go wrong, I assumed everything would go
smoothly an didn’t come up with any backup plans for if something went
wrong. Luckily nothing did go wrong but if it did I would have been able to
solve the problem way better and quicker if I planned for it beforehand. I
could have planned better by coming up with multiple different plans for a
certain part of my podcast so that I could experiment with both and decide
which one I like the most. This would have made my product more appealing
to me and probably more appealing to others in my target audience too since
me and them probably have similar interests.
5. Time Management
• Overall I think I managed my time pretty well, although I did fall slightly
behind once or twice overall I managed to get all of the required work
submitted on time. My products will definitely have improved with a bit
more time but not by a lot, there would have been a slight production
quality increase in terms of the editing and reflection work. If I had more
time to produce my work I would have gone more in depth with the script
so that the content we where discussing in the podcast could have been
more consistent. I would have also added more detail to my planning and
research PowerPoints.
6. Technical Qualities
On the left is the cufboys show, on the right is my own podcast, in terms of similarities, the
amount of cast members and set is pretty similar. The positioning of the people in both
podcasts are pretty much the same, also the fact that the hosts/host and guests/guest are
clearly separated is also the same between the 2 podcasts. The topics of conversation
discussed in both of these podcasts is also extremely similar, the cufboys show on the left is
a podcast that mainly focuses on underground and mainstream music, the guests are
normally music artists, the right podcast also is very music related and the majority of the
runtime is music underground music conversation. The differences are quite cear, for
example, the lighting is different and in the left example you can see the microphone
equipment and advertisement signs.
7. Technical qualities
The similarities between these 2 podcasts are the usage and consistent theme of black
clothing, the black clothing in the right example conveys a theme of underground
fashion, since that solidifies and makes the topics of the podcast more prominent, this
helps to get the message across better. In the left example I think it sort of does the
same thing, since the guests in the left example are actual underground artists and the
black clothing they wear fits their theme and image, these 2 podcasts both use clothing
as a way of underground expression. In terms of differences. I think the left example
portrays an overall more professional look and feel too it, they have a microphone for
every guest and their own company logo.
8. Aesthetic Qualities
I think my work looks pretty good visually, the purple lightning fits the theme of the
underground and portrays a certain theme that I like. To be honest I wouldn’t say it
was creative, it was just a simple and slightly generic podcast set with 3 cast members,
although I don’t necessarily think being generic is a bad thing in certain aspects. Some
specific aspects of my podcasts visuals I like include the lightning and the positioning
of the cast. I would improve the quality of the audio by putting a bit more time into
the editing of the audio, this would have made it sound way better and professional. A
strength would include the fact that the aesthetic of my work relates to the topics that
are actually being talked about in the podcast, for example, the clothing the cast
members are wearing are very underground like, same with the lighting, the aesthetic
qualities link to the main theme and topic of the product. I think a weakness would be
that
9. Aesthetic Qualities
Underground style clothing
items to match the theme
of the podcast. Skulls,
skeletons and horror movie
characters to match the
underground theme.
Purple lighting which
also matches the
theme of the
underground.
10. Audience Appeal
I have appealed to my target audience through the usage of certain themes and
aesthetics that appeal to the audience, my target audience is people who enjoy
underground style fashion and music, to appeal to them I simply converse about those
exact topics. This will help them feel familiarized and comfortable with the product
before even watching/listening to it since they are already aware of the content. I
think the clothing, lighting/set and the topics of conversation would appeal to the
target audience.
11. Audience appeal
In this screenshot, the clothing items we are wearing are all from certain different types
of underground clothing brands that the audience that I am trying to reach might be
familiar with, seeing these certain clothing items will draw them into watching/listening
to the podcast. Also the purple led lighting (which is commonly used at underground
artist shows) will intrigue them also.
13. Feedback 1
• What did you like about the product?
– Well structured, the topics were discussed in good depth and it was all
straight to the point. It was edited to keep it all tight.
– Even though it’s a podcast, there was effort put into the visuals.
There’s coloured lighting and everyone is in frame.
– The music blends in well and doesn’t intrude on the talking, it’s very
well mixed in terms of volume and it’s well-suited.
• What improvements could have been made to the product?
– You could maybe add subtitles to make it accessible for deaf people.
Anything else visual would be welcome, maybe like an image of
whoever you’re talking about when you say their name.
– Maybe a more detailed or animated outro/intro to give it more
personality. That outro could also be something audible instead, or
you could simply increase the music’s volume when you all stop
talking.
14. Feedback 2
• What did you like about the product?
– I like that there was some clear thought into the set of the podcast.
For example the purple lighting works really well with the relaxed tone
that I feel you’re going for.
– The backing track that was used also fits really well with the tone of
the podcast, it helps immerse the audience into the podcast without
being intrusive and in the way.
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
• I feel as if you could have tried playing with multiple camera angles,
maybe a camera for each guest if possible to enhance the technical side of
your project.
15. Feedback 3
• What did you like about the product?
– I like the use of common product features like an intro song and a
“coming up next” section
– Background music is not too overwhelming and helps bring into the
mood of the podcast
– Visual side is appealing as well with the unique lighting and cast
positioning
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
• Most of the intro-card didn’t seem relevant to the product
• More visual editing techniques would be nice, like having images of
certain brands come up on screen when mentioned
16. Peer Feedback Summary
• What do you agree with from your peer feedback? I
agree that I could have added picture examples of
some of the artists that we where talking about.
• What do you disagree with from your peer feedback? I
disagree with the claim that I should have added a
camera angle for each one of the podcasts, I disagree
with this because I think this would go against the
nature of a podcast since normally there is just one still
camera shot displaying the whole cast.
17. Peer Feedback Summary
I would add photographic examples of some of the
people we where talking about in the podcast so
that I could familiarise the viewers with who we are
talking about.
