3. Existing Products Research
• Haunted House soundscape
This audio product uses lots of different sound effects to create a haunted feel. From
what I can hear some of these sound effects are Foley for the sound of footstep and a
sound that I think is meant to sound like a knife scraping the wall. Most of these are
also diegetic sounds.
There is no narrator is this audio product but I don’t think it needed one because the
idea of this audio was to create an atmosphere and not to tell a story.
There is a little bit of voice over of someone screaming in the background and also
someone crying. I think this worked well with all the scary and mysterious Foley
sounds.
There is no dialogue, Soundtrack or non-diegetic audio throughout the product.
8. Idea Generation/Initial Reaction
My initial reaction to doing an audio ghost/horror story
was to make up my own story of an event. I knew that the
main source of audio I wanted to use Foley because I've
watched some videos on this in the past and you can get
some much more realistic sound from it. I was also just
something that I thought would be quite fun and
experimental. I thought if I could combine these Foley
audios along with a story they would work quite well
together. So, I've decided that I'm going to get someone
to explain my ghost story and in between you will hear all
the sounds that the person would have heard using
Foley.
9. Idea Generation/Initial Reaction
Here are some of my Foley ideas for my story:
• Fire Place: Crumpling a crisp packet
• Gunshot: Pop balloon
• Rustling Leaves: Rustling strips of paper
• Thunder: Stones in box and move box around
11. Foley
• I recently did a Foley project where I had a clip from a film called Shaun of the Dead but.
There was no audio, so we had to record our own audio and add it to the clip to make it look
and sound like a normal video. I fell that this project went well, me and 2 of my friends got so
convincing sounds and they fit well into the clip well and you couldn’t even tell at the end
that the clip originally didn’t have and sound. We also thought carefully about sounds that
you could hear in the distance e.g., the fridge in the background of the shop, the zombies
further away and the cars in the distance. I think one thing that would have been better is if
we had a bit more of a quiet place to record our sounds in because some of them were
recorded in public areas so there are some background noises in there that were not
intentional. Something I learnt whilst doing this project is that in Foley the sound doesn’t
have to be the actual action to get thee realistic sound. For example, in the Shaun of the
Dead clip he slipped on liquid in the shop. But instead of slipping on water to get the sound I
juts made a squeak noise by skimming my shoe across the floor and I still got a realistic slip
sound.

12. • During recording the sounds for Shaun of the Dead we recorded at about 3
different locations. Some of them sounded better than others when we reviewed
them. The 3 locations were college, outside and Tesco. In some ways recording in 3
different locations was a positive thing. For example, in the clip there were 2
locations that the person in the clip walked in. One was outside and one was inside
a shop. We knew that these two would sound slightly different because of the
different floors. So having an outside location and a shop location allowed us to
film the two different walks to make it sound better when added to the clip as it
meant the same sound wasn’t being used for both. However, some locations were
easier to record at than others. In all 3 locations there was a lot of background
noises that we didn’t want in the recording. This included cars driving by, people
talking and shopping, music in shop and others. On the audio recorder you can
turn it up or down to make it focus in more on the sound you're recording and try
and block out any other sounds. But despite this, we still had unwanted sounds in
our recordings. This was a major problem whilst filming in Tesco as it was quite
busy and there was lots of other noises. The way we fixed this a little bit was by
turning the volume down on the sound so you couldn’t hear all the background
noise. We had to do this a lot anyway to make the sound more convincing and to
so you could manipulate how far away or how close it sounded to the listener.
Recording
13. • I think the effect off having things like two
different walks on two different floors meant
you could hear when the person in the clip
were in a different location. This with
influence my project because there will be no
video so only the audio can explain everything
that is going on and needs to allow the
listener to know where the person is and what
is happening.

16. Story
• Man is spending the night in a hotel where people had recently
reported hearing weird sounds in the night, and some had claimed
to have seen ghosts. After hearing a constant creaking door coming
from the other room, he leaves his hotel room to go and knock on
the next door to see what is going on. After there is no answer, he
goes down to the lobby to see if anyone is there. There is not. He
heads back up to his room and on the way back the door of the
room he knocked on before opens with no one there. He hears a
girl crying from the bathroom. He slowly walks into the room and
heads towards the bathroom door before the door slams behind
him. Still, no one there. He stares at the door intensely for about 10
second. He turns back and walks slowly over to the bathroom door.
He pulls the door handle down all the way. In one quick motion
yanks the door open. A final gunshot can be heard before the audio
ends.

24. Daily Reflection Day 1
• Got all recording done on day 1 filming in the
woods.
• Had a bit of difficulty with the audio recorder
at first but quickly got past it.
• Took about 1hour 30mins
25. Daily Reflection Day 2
• Put all audio into premiere and edited all
them together into one piece.
29. Research
• Strength of my research was that I found lots of different sounds that I
could use in mine which made me have to figure out my own ways to
make those sounds using foley which made it more unique. It also showed
me lots of different types of audio e.g., some have narrators, and some
don’t. Some also have dialogue and some don’t. This allowed me to
investigate different aspects and take ideas from different products to use
in my own.
• I think a weakness of my research was I did look into many that had
background music in them. This meant that I didn’t have any in my final
product because I didn’t really look too deeply into it. If I had researched
music and had some in my piece it would have created a different kind of
atmosphere as I already know an atmosphere can be changed depending
on how the music sounds.
30. Planning
• I think a strength of my planning was that I had planned out exactly what
foley sounds I was going to use and how I was going to create them. This
helped my product because 1 I already knew what I was doing so there
was no waste of time and 2 I already tested then beforehand so I knew
how they would sound and knew that they all worked in the way wanted
the too.
• I think a weakness of my planning was that I didn’t test how long the audio
was going to last. This meant that upon editing I did not have enough
audio to reach the suggested time and came off very short. A longer audio
product would have allowed to 1 reach the time I needed and 2 allowed
me to put more of my ideas into the piece.
31. Time Management
• I think overall I did manage my time well. During the music video project, I
explained that I ran out of time to film due to lack of time management
but in this one it was well planned out. I recorded for one day and then
used the rest of the time for editing. I had time left over at the end as well
which I just used to add bits here and there to the product. I still think my
product would have improved with additional time because I would have
gone for a second recording session to fill in the left-over time as it was
cut short due to lack of audio. That’s what I would have done with
additional time.
32. Technical Qualities
• My work is similar to other products in the sense that it uses lots of
different foley sounds to create the atmosphere.
• A difference is that lots of audios have a narrator to explain what's
happening but mine doesn’t.
• I wouldn’t say my piece was technically detailed or complicated, but I just
tried to keep it simple. I did use some foley techniques underneath the
dialogue, but some are more noticeable than others. The idea was that
the foley sounds were there, but you weren't meant to know that’s what
they were. They were just in the background.
• I used an audio recorder to record.
33. Aural Qualities
• I think overall my work does sound good. I took a few different ideas like
Foley, dialogue and made them into one project which I feel was creative. I
like all the foley sounds I used e.g., the rustling leaves on my shoes. I
would improve the dialogue by recording it closer up and it sounds a bit
distance on the recording.
34. Audience Appeal
• The bits where the character is running through the woods would appeal
to my target audience (13–17-year-olds) because it creates tension and is
dramatic. This is the same at the end
