Audio Story
Task 2: Initial Responses
Initial Responses and Idea Generation
Log your initial thoughts regarding the set brief in this document
What stories could you use? How do you feel about the different potential
formats? What are the positives about this project? What could be some difficult
aspects? Etc
Use the format on this document to guide this response – some are set as a
question on one slide, but you should look to add further slides as necessary
Which stories have you researched and looked
as potential starting points?
• The Archers: The episode I listened too involved a couple renewing
there wedding vowels. Although it’s a series, you cant see anything so
the creators have to embrace sound effects so the listener instantly
knows what’s happening. For example at the beginning of the episode
the generator stalled and you heard the sound it made with the lights
turning off and I instantly knew before any f the dialogue from the
characters that there was a generator that just failed, and its
important when recreating audio story's that the sound effects are
obvious and clear so the listener is fully aware of what's happening.
Which stories have you researched and looked
as potential starting points?
• Dr Who Clip: This snippet from an episode of Dr Who plays some very
intense sounds with an effect over the dialogue of the characters to
show the danger of the situation and how powerful the Dr really is.
The different selection of sound effects for different moments through
out the clip make who ever is listening understand that the Dr is
punishing others for the harm they have caused and it’s a good clip to
use when planning for my own project as the sounds were really
effective for what they were used for and it’s a good goal to use sound
effects to create the same intensity in my own project.
Which stories have you researched and looked
as potential starting points?
• Haunted House Soundscape: The video progressed from someone
walking outside into them walking into a haunted house. You heard
sounds get more intense as the audio progressed. What started as
floor boards creaking turned into intense sound effects playing till it
calms back down again with the outside ambience. Its important that
the sound used make who ever is listening more tense as they make
there way to the climax where loud sounds play until it eventually
calms down again along with the listener calming down from the
moment. Otherwise you fail the objective of making the listener feel
creeped out.
Which research into existing products has been the
most useful? Includes examples and explanations
I have found listening to other soundscapes in general most helpful. Its easy
to get little bits of inspiration from different sections in different
soundscapes to then implement into yours in some form to try and get the
most impact on the listener. I found sudden loud sounds, disturbing sound
effects and sudden silence was the most impactful to me so I want to be able
to recreate those style of effects into mine.
Which production format [drama, narration,
etc] do you feel fits your idea best and why?
I want to be able to create an intense, scary atmosphere as a soundscape
meaning I cant use narration so its important that my sound effects are
impactful to whoever is listening. The genre I aim to go for is horror as I want
who ever is listening to feel on edge at the climax's of the story and to feel
the impact from the story.
Which story have you settled on and why?
I want to make a soundscape based on walking through a Haunted House. I
chose to do this as it gives me the ability to use a wide range of effects as a
lot of different things could happen in a haunted house. I could have echo's
playing, children laughing, or sounds from mythical creatures such as witches
or skeletons. But there are more sound I could have hiding in the background
such as breathing gradually intensifying, the outside noises quietly playing as
ambience and they're just a few options for what I could use and together,
they could create a discomforting experience for the listener.
If you had to sell your story quickly, what is the
title and the logline?
I plan on calling the story Oldfield Avenue. I decided on having a street name
of a haunted house for the title as the story is someone exploring the horrors
inside of the house and I saw that as a good fit.
For a logline, I would summarise it as ‘Someone daring entered a haunted
house to try prove that there was nothing haunted about it, until they
encounter what they thought were just rumours and try escape! But do they
actually make it out alive?’
What ideas have you had for sound effects,
narration and storytelling?
Because I chose a soundscape, I wont include any narration. Instead I will
rely on using sound effects to create the atmosphere. I plan to use bad
weather for the outside, Creaky floor boards with unknown protagonist
breathing as they explore the house. I plan to use disturbing sounds from a
range of creatures, ranging from witches too a young child giggling. I'm
hoping that the combination of those different sounds and more will create
the intended atmosphere that will creep out whoever listens.
Initial feelings…how do you feel about the
project currently?
I am looking forward to the creating of the project. I purposely chose a
soundscape as I found that the most interesting and my excitement towards
making it should also push my motivation, resulting in a better project.
Recording different sounds to create an atmosphere sound fun and it makes
me confident that I will have a well produced product at the end!
What other research do you think you need to
do?
I think what is most important is reflecting back on what audio clips I found
most impactful. For example the violent sounds that came from the Dr in the
Dr Who clip was more impacting on me and so I want to be able to recreate
that in my own, but with the appropriate sound effects. So it may be a case
of having sudden loud sounds from a range of creatures in mine to try jump
scare who ever is listening to my project.

Editor's Notes

  1. Think about creative and technical elements, it could be you like the idea of evoking a sense of place or you have the perfect person in mind as a narrator? Or are you keen to start writing a story and take it from there? Ideas and development are personal, try and get across where your idea is and what has got you to that point.
  2. Add as many slides as needed from the work you did on Urban Legends, York Ghost stories and other inspirations you have considered. Which story have you gravitated toward and why?
  3. Add as many slides as needed from the work you did on Urban Legends, York Ghost stories and other inspirations you have considered. Which story have you gravitated toward and why?
  4. Add as many slides as needed from the work you did on Urban Legends, York Ghost stories and other inspirations you have considered. Which story have you gravitated toward and why?
  5. Think about why this idea rather than any other…is it because it has the best scope for sfx, narration, etc. Reasons can be personal, but you need explain them.
  6. A logline is a one sentence description or summary of the audio story. Loglines distill the important elements of your script/story—main character, setup, central conflict, antagonist—into a clear, concise teaser. The goal is to write a logline so enticing that it hooks the listener into your idea
  7. Think about creative and technical elements here, it could be you like the idea of evoking a sense of place or you have the perfect person in mind as a narrator? Or are you keen to start writing a story and take it from there? Ideas and development are personal, try and get across where your idea is and what has got you to that point.
  8. Consider pros and cons here, what are you excited about, what is a worry…
  9. This could be audio recording, post-production, getting cast/narrator, etc…it might be just organising your idea into a workable project…
