Proposals
• The proposal is one of the most important aspects in
pre-production, as it is where a lot of the core ideas,
like names, genre, and styles are discussed, its
normally a very weak point for me as ideas necessary
to the proposals tend to come to me later in stages of
pre-production such as research. Although I think I
have done relatively well with my main proposal, they
were still lacking in areas, especially in the rationale,
although this is one of the less important areas I would
have liked to include more. My preproposal was quite
weak to begin with, as I had little idea as to what the
answers were to the questions that early in the
planning stages, but as I progressed through the pre-
production, my ideas became more solid, and I was
able to return and fill it out more.
Research – Contextual &
Theory
• I found the contextual & theory research easy
compared to the rest of the pre-production. I
started by choosing 3 directors, Jordan Peele,
Stanley Kubrick and Alfred Hitchcock who all
specialized in horror/thriller, to give me an idea
about how they created their films, I spent a lot of
time looking into their personal lives, which wasn’t
particularly relevant to filmmaking, but I hoped it
would give me an insight into their individual
creative processes. I then investigated genre specific
theory's, which again I hoped would help me break
down what I needed to do to create the best style
of horror film, whilst sticking to the specific theory's
and conventions of the genre.
Research – Contextual Proposal
• I found the contextual proposal
easy to write after doing the
research, as all I had to do was
explain why I chose the specific
genre theories and people in
that genre to research. I also
explained what scenes from the
chosen directors' films had
inspired me and why.
Research - General
• The general research was one of the key aspects of the
pre-production, but I also struggled with it the most. I
was set back by the lack of responses on my audience
research, as a lot of them were unusable but I managed
to collect enough data in the end to make it useable. In
terms of the rest of the research, I chose to investigate
already existing films, Hush and Birdbox, since they were
generally related to my original idea and although my
idea changed throughout the production stage, due to
the first idea not being able to work, they were still
relevant to my final production. I also chose to
investigate existing posters and DVD covers, as I chose to
make 3 posters and a DVD cover to go alongside my final
production. I do think I could have gone into more detail
on the films, but I am happy with the results
Experiments
• The pre production experiments
were a vital part of my pre
production, as it gave me time to
practice and try and get techniques
down before I started my final
production. For my experiment I tried
color grading, as I wasn’t familiar with
the process and didn’t want to waste
too much time in the final process
figuring out how to do it.
Problem Solving
• The problem solving aspect proved to be a
very vital aspect of the pre production as
there was multiple problems I had to face
during latter stages of pre production and
many parts of my production. When
problems like footage corrupting and not
being able to access saved doccuemtns
arose I was able to use the plans I had put
in place with my problem solving to make
sure I always had access to these files that
were corruoted and some psd files that had
been deleted.
Planning
• In this area of planning, I planned for my
main film trailer. This area of planning was very
important to my project as it was the stage
where everything was set in stone for my final
project. To create my storyboard, I used
storyboard.us as it was free and easily
accessible online, although it doesn't look as
professional as I would have liked it to, it was
better than drawing a storyboard out and then
scanning it in. The shot list was also vital to
ensuring success in the production stage.
Normally planning out shots is not my strong
point as I tend to deviate from the list and get
distracted but I managed to stick to this shot list
relatively well and got most shots I had planned
out.
Planning
• In this area of my planning, I worked
on planning out things for my posters,
such as the color schemes I was going
to use, and the fonts I was going to
use. The planning of fonts I was going
to use also doubled up as fonts to use
in my trailer. Although most of this
planning wasn’t actually used when
creating my posters, it was still helpful
to do this planning.
Time Management
• Time management is something I have struggled with a lot, especially
in past projects. Although I was behind schedule with a lot of pre-
production I managed to stay on track and get most of the work near
to completed before I started on with my production. During
production I did manage time to an extent I was happy with,
completing everything I wanted to complete early and being able to
move on to evaluation early. I did suffer a few setbacks that pushed
creating my film trailer back due to college WIFI being slow and the
only way I could access my footage was via download, but I managed
to edit it together a few days faster than I expected too once it was all
downloaded. Overall, I am happy with how Ive managed time on my
FMP.
Final Production –
Poster 1
• The first poster I created was intended as
the main poster, to go on social media,
main form of advertising etc. This poster is
the most detailed one I made, whilst I
didn’t follow the planning, I had set out for
my posters I am very happy with the way it
turned out. I wanted to make this poster
very dull and colorless, with the only color
in Calvin's face, but with that reduced
massively. I would potentially make the
text slightly larger and less opaque so it
was easier to read.
Final Production –
Poster 1
• I took a lot of inspiration from the Friday
the 13th. Some of the similarities between
the two are, the dark forest in the
background with the shadowy character in
the background. The differences between
the two posters are the placement of the
text on mine, as the title and credits are at
the top and the tagline is at the bottom, my
poster has the extra character in Calvin,
behind the shadowy character. I also used a
wholly white whereas on the Friday the
13th the text is red.
Final Production –
Poster 2
• I chose a very minimalist approach
to this poster, only including the
film's title and the release date. Like
the first poster I didn’t really stick to
the ideas set out in my planning to
create this poster but again I am
happy with the way it turned out,
even if it is very minimal. I didn’t
take inspiration from any poster to
create this one making it quite
unique.
Final Production –
Poster 3
• With my final poster, I stuck to the
fonts chosen and a color scheme I
had created in planning, and I was
very happy with the end result.
Although sticking to the origional
planning is something I find diffuclt
I am very happy that I did stick to it
whilst creating this poster, as the
results are really good, and it has
recived the most positive feedback
from peers.
Final Production –
Poster 3
• I took a lot of inspiration from the
Kill Bill minimalist poster, especially
in the color scheme. I tried to make
mine stand out from the Kill bill
poster by using a darker yellow,
different text placement and I made
it unique by adding a smashed
effect using the line tool in
photoshop. Im really happy wth
how the poster as a whole turned
out.
Final Production – DVD
Cover
• I'm fairly happy with the end result of
my DVD cover, although there is
several ways, I think I could have
improved it by adding more things to
the front because there is a lot of
empty space that I don’t really like,
but I wasn’t sure what to fill it with at
the time. Overall, I am happy with
the final result but there is a few
things I would change.
Final Production – DVD
Cover
• I am much happier with the final
result of the back of the DVD cover.
I feel like I managed to learn from
the front cover and manage to fill
the space and make the back side
look a lot less empty, although I am
not happy with the size of the text I
put on the back as I feel like it
makes it look a lot less professional,
but I am happy with the result.
Final Production – Trailer –
Aesthetic
• I am really happy with the overall aesthetic qualities
of my final trailer. I was going for a dark feeling and
look for the majority of the trailer and I think I
achieved it through color grading and filters. I'm
really happy with the shadowy effect I created when
the from the shadows text comes on the screen,
although I think I made the sky too bright, and it
stands out slightly too much from the sky in the rest
of the trailer. I really like how the glitch effect
turned out too, with it adding some extra dimension
to some boring clips I didn’t really know what to do
with. I'm not too happy with the choice of music I
used, as I had made a song for the original idea, and
I don’t think it fit in too well with the revised idea
but I didn’t want to let it go to waste.

Final Production – Trailer –
Technical
• I found the technical aspects of editing my trailer
quite difficult in places, as I had a lot of difficulties
with the machine I was working on. Obviously, this
was the most important part of my production, so I
had to work around the computer going slow, and in
the end, I got the result I wanted. Although the
focus of my project was a lot more aesthetic based
than technically based I still had to put a lot of work
in on the technical side to get the aesthetic I
wanted. To achive the looks I wanted I had to cut a
lot of the footage up into individual frames, wich
made it difficult to work with, especially with the
computer running so slowly, as any minor
movement to the wrong place took 5/10 minuites
to resolve.
Peer Feedback
Questions
• Is there enough information about the film
included within the trailer?
• Is the quality of footage consistent throughout?
• Does the song at the beginning fit with the
trailer?
• Are the fade transitions the right lengths?
• Are some of the shots too shaky/wobbly?
Peer Feedback
• Peer 1
• Is there enough information about the film included within the
trailer?
I think there could have been a little bit more information about the
actual release date and possibly made it clearer what the title was.
• Is the quality of footage consistent throughout?
The overall quality was consistent although some shots were a bit too
dark.
• Does the song at the beginning fit with the trailer?
The song fits nicely.
• Are the fade transitions the right lengths?
The transition second fade transition was a bit too long, the rest were
good though
• Are some of the shots too shaky/wobbly?
No, I think all the shots were steady, especially the running shot.
Peer Feedback
• Peer 2
• Is there enough information about the film included within the
trailer?
I think enough information was there, although maybe a set release
date would have been good.
• Is the quality of footage consistent throughout?
The overall quality is very good all the way through.
• Does the song at the beginning fit with the trailer?
I think the general sound fits the trailer, but the lyrics don’t make
much sense to the actual film.
• Are the fade transitions the right lengths?
I think the fades are too long on all of them.
• Are some of the shots too shaky/wobbly?
I think a few of the panning shots were shaky but the rest were good.

evaluation

  • 2. Proposals • The proposal is one of the most important aspects in pre-production, as it is where a lot of the core ideas, like names, genre, and styles are discussed, its normally a very weak point for me as ideas necessary to the proposals tend to come to me later in stages of pre-production such as research. Although I think I have done relatively well with my main proposal, they were still lacking in areas, especially in the rationale, although this is one of the less important areas I would have liked to include more. My preproposal was quite weak to begin with, as I had little idea as to what the answers were to the questions that early in the planning stages, but as I progressed through the pre- production, my ideas became more solid, and I was able to return and fill it out more.
  • 3. Research – Contextual & Theory • I found the contextual & theory research easy compared to the rest of the pre-production. I started by choosing 3 directors, Jordan Peele, Stanley Kubrick and Alfred Hitchcock who all specialized in horror/thriller, to give me an idea about how they created their films, I spent a lot of time looking into their personal lives, which wasn’t particularly relevant to filmmaking, but I hoped it would give me an insight into their individual creative processes. I then investigated genre specific theory's, which again I hoped would help me break down what I needed to do to create the best style of horror film, whilst sticking to the specific theory's and conventions of the genre.
  • 4. Research – Contextual Proposal • I found the contextual proposal easy to write after doing the research, as all I had to do was explain why I chose the specific genre theories and people in that genre to research. I also explained what scenes from the chosen directors' films had inspired me and why.
  • 5. Research - General • The general research was one of the key aspects of the pre-production, but I also struggled with it the most. I was set back by the lack of responses on my audience research, as a lot of them were unusable but I managed to collect enough data in the end to make it useable. In terms of the rest of the research, I chose to investigate already existing films, Hush and Birdbox, since they were generally related to my original idea and although my idea changed throughout the production stage, due to the first idea not being able to work, they were still relevant to my final production. I also chose to investigate existing posters and DVD covers, as I chose to make 3 posters and a DVD cover to go alongside my final production. I do think I could have gone into more detail on the films, but I am happy with the results
  • 6. Experiments • The pre production experiments were a vital part of my pre production, as it gave me time to practice and try and get techniques down before I started my final production. For my experiment I tried color grading, as I wasn’t familiar with the process and didn’t want to waste too much time in the final process figuring out how to do it.
  • 7. Problem Solving • The problem solving aspect proved to be a very vital aspect of the pre production as there was multiple problems I had to face during latter stages of pre production and many parts of my production. When problems like footage corrupting and not being able to access saved doccuemtns arose I was able to use the plans I had put in place with my problem solving to make sure I always had access to these files that were corruoted and some psd files that had been deleted.
  • 8. Planning • In this area of planning, I planned for my main film trailer. This area of planning was very important to my project as it was the stage where everything was set in stone for my final project. To create my storyboard, I used storyboard.us as it was free and easily accessible online, although it doesn't look as professional as I would have liked it to, it was better than drawing a storyboard out and then scanning it in. The shot list was also vital to ensuring success in the production stage. Normally planning out shots is not my strong point as I tend to deviate from the list and get distracted but I managed to stick to this shot list relatively well and got most shots I had planned out.
  • 9. Planning • In this area of my planning, I worked on planning out things for my posters, such as the color schemes I was going to use, and the fonts I was going to use. The planning of fonts I was going to use also doubled up as fonts to use in my trailer. Although most of this planning wasn’t actually used when creating my posters, it was still helpful to do this planning.
  • 10. Time Management • Time management is something I have struggled with a lot, especially in past projects. Although I was behind schedule with a lot of pre- production I managed to stay on track and get most of the work near to completed before I started on with my production. During production I did manage time to an extent I was happy with, completing everything I wanted to complete early and being able to move on to evaluation early. I did suffer a few setbacks that pushed creating my film trailer back due to college WIFI being slow and the only way I could access my footage was via download, but I managed to edit it together a few days faster than I expected too once it was all downloaded. Overall, I am happy with how Ive managed time on my FMP.
  • 11. Final Production – Poster 1 • The first poster I created was intended as the main poster, to go on social media, main form of advertising etc. This poster is the most detailed one I made, whilst I didn’t follow the planning, I had set out for my posters I am very happy with the way it turned out. I wanted to make this poster very dull and colorless, with the only color in Calvin's face, but with that reduced massively. I would potentially make the text slightly larger and less opaque so it was easier to read.
  • 12. Final Production – Poster 1 • I took a lot of inspiration from the Friday the 13th. Some of the similarities between the two are, the dark forest in the background with the shadowy character in the background. The differences between the two posters are the placement of the text on mine, as the title and credits are at the top and the tagline is at the bottom, my poster has the extra character in Calvin, behind the shadowy character. I also used a wholly white whereas on the Friday the 13th the text is red.
  • 13. Final Production – Poster 2 • I chose a very minimalist approach to this poster, only including the film's title and the release date. Like the first poster I didn’t really stick to the ideas set out in my planning to create this poster but again I am happy with the way it turned out, even if it is very minimal. I didn’t take inspiration from any poster to create this one making it quite unique.
  • 14. Final Production – Poster 3 • With my final poster, I stuck to the fonts chosen and a color scheme I had created in planning, and I was very happy with the end result. Although sticking to the origional planning is something I find diffuclt I am very happy that I did stick to it whilst creating this poster, as the results are really good, and it has recived the most positive feedback from peers.
  • 15. Final Production – Poster 3 • I took a lot of inspiration from the Kill Bill minimalist poster, especially in the color scheme. I tried to make mine stand out from the Kill bill poster by using a darker yellow, different text placement and I made it unique by adding a smashed effect using the line tool in photoshop. Im really happy wth how the poster as a whole turned out.
  • 16. Final Production – DVD Cover • I'm fairly happy with the end result of my DVD cover, although there is several ways, I think I could have improved it by adding more things to the front because there is a lot of empty space that I don’t really like, but I wasn’t sure what to fill it with at the time. Overall, I am happy with the final result but there is a few things I would change.
  • 17. Final Production – DVD Cover • I am much happier with the final result of the back of the DVD cover. I feel like I managed to learn from the front cover and manage to fill the space and make the back side look a lot less empty, although I am not happy with the size of the text I put on the back as I feel like it makes it look a lot less professional, but I am happy with the result.

  • 19. Final Production – Trailer – Aesthetic • I am really happy with the overall aesthetic qualities of my final trailer. I was going for a dark feeling and look for the majority of the trailer and I think I achieved it through color grading and filters. I'm really happy with the shadowy effect I created when the from the shadows text comes on the screen, although I think I made the sky too bright, and it stands out slightly too much from the sky in the rest of the trailer. I really like how the glitch effect turned out too, with it adding some extra dimension to some boring clips I didn’t really know what to do with. I'm not too happy with the choice of music I used, as I had made a song for the original idea, and I don’t think it fit in too well with the revised idea but I didn’t want to let it go to waste. • 20. Final Production – Trailer – Technical • I found the technical aspects of editing my trailer quite difficult in places, as I had a lot of difficulties with the machine I was working on. Obviously, this was the most important part of my production, so I had to work around the computer going slow, and in the end, I got the result I wanted. Although the focus of my project was a lot more aesthetic based than technically based I still had to put a lot of work in on the technical side to get the aesthetic I wanted. To achive the looks I wanted I had to cut a lot of the footage up into individual frames, wich made it difficult to work with, especially with the computer running so slowly, as any minor movement to the wrong place took 5/10 minuites to resolve.
  • 21. Peer Feedback Questions • Is there enough information about the film included within the trailer? • Is the quality of footage consistent throughout? • Does the song at the beginning fit with the trailer? • Are the fade transitions the right lengths? • Are some of the shots too shaky/wobbly?
  • 22. Peer Feedback • Peer 1 • Is there enough information about the film included within the trailer? I think there could have been a little bit more information about the actual release date and possibly made it clearer what the title was. • Is the quality of footage consistent throughout? The overall quality was consistent although some shots were a bit too dark. • Does the song at the beginning fit with the trailer? The song fits nicely. • Are the fade transitions the right lengths? The transition second fade transition was a bit too long, the rest were good though • Are some of the shots too shaky/wobbly? No, I think all the shots were steady, especially the running shot.
  • 23. Peer Feedback • Peer 2 • Is there enough information about the film included within the trailer? I think enough information was there, although maybe a set release date would have been good. • Is the quality of footage consistent throughout? The overall quality is very good all the way through. • Does the song at the beginning fit with the trailer? I think the general sound fits the trailer, but the lyrics don’t make much sense to the actual film. • Are the fade transitions the right lengths? I think the fades are too long on all of them. • Are some of the shots too shaky/wobbly? I think a few of the panning shots were shaky but the rest were good.
