What have you learnt about
technologies from the process of
constructing this product?
Technology used in my main task news
bulletin
The recording studio was the mainly used for recording our
presenters. The microphone gave us a clear and professional
voice and due to the studio we manage to pick up minimal amount
of background noise. Using the pop filter when recording removed
the plosive sounds when we pronounced certain words which
helped the recording sound more formal. However a disadvantage
to the recording studio and the microphone was that is was not
portable, therefore we decided it would be best if we used a
dictaphone when recording our vox pops and outside broadcast. I
managed to learn how to use a dictaphone quickly as it has a
simple design with only a few buttons which made it easy to use.
Although the dictaphone was portable and compact the recording
were bad quality. This is shown in our outside broadcast when the
weather is bad it picked up the wind rather than quest, therefore
you are unable to understand and hear what the reply to our
question was. Due to this disaster we thought it might have been a
good idea to see if our phone would be pick up a better quality,
however, once discussed with the whole group we came to the
conclusion that using a mobile phone was not professional looking.
Technology used in my main task new bulletin
USB sticks were used a lot in the constructions of our product as it allowed us to easily transfer
work to each other. For example when Jack and I was working on jingle we were unsure if the
other group members would approve our the work we had done on it so far, therefore we put it on
a USB stick for the others to listen to when they had the chance either in lesson or if they want to
take the memory stick home and listen. This is another advantage as it is portable and can work
in any computer or device. However there a few disadvantages to USB sticks such as losing files
or not having enough megabytes to store our work. On a few occasions I was not present for
lessons which meant that the group could not finish work which was stored on my USB stick. This
caused us to fall slightly behind our work and we had to put in more time after college.
Software and Hardware I used in my production
When editing our news bulletins, jingles, vox pops and interviews I always
used Adobe Audition. Even though the software was difficult to understand
when first using it once you understood the basics it is extremely easy to use
and the layout seemed simple. Using multitrack on our jingle allowed me to
play the introduction to our radio station while layering relaxing music on the
track below so that there was not dead air. It also helped to mask any
background noise picked up in the recording and make the tone of the voice
sound less harsh. Another technique I used on the jingle and news bulletin
was the volume curves. This helped music slowly fade out so that another
track could slowly fade in meaning there would not be any abrupt or
noticeable starts or stops during the broadcast. The razor tool was used the
most in order to cut and edit clips which were imperfect. We were able to cut
out any dead silences, mumbling or mistakes. Lastly when using audition
towards the end of the project I learnt out how to use the volume levels, this
helped me a lot when layering different recordings such as presenters
headline clips with the soundbed. The soundbed needed to be on a lower
volume so that the presenters could be heard, also due to recording outside
some of our vox pops were louder than other clips. Therefore this enabled
me to create multitracks. Every track had a different volume level to suit the
clips and make the whole clips sound more fluent.
Technical difficulties I encountered with our
project
For the majority of the time we did not find many problems
when using devices, the only main problem I faced was when
using audition. Although I could use it when it came to
finishing a draft I could make the slightest change it would all
go wrong. The problems caused in audition sometimes made
me edit the whole clip again, other times it made all of my
work and I couldn’t find any change in the tracks to show why
this had happened. All of these problems were easily and
quickly fix. However, finding out how to fix them took a lot of
time and fiddling around with other tool. On the other hand
this did help me in the future as it showed me how to use
other tools on the software.
Other media products
When creating both my preliminary project and my main task I
realised that it was a very time consuming task. This caused me to
put extra hours into the project outside of class. Also when adding
more codes and conventions into my work I noticed them more
quickly and easily in my everyday life such as listening to the radio
in the car. Also by listening to other radio stations I have realised
how hard it must be fore the presenters not to go wrong when
reading headlines. We also found that finding someone official to
interview could be a long progress and you may be rejected most
of the time.
Assessing my technical skills
Although my main struggle was using Audition I believe because of this I learnt the most from it. I
am proud of the sections in the new bulletins when I had to change the clip to a voxpop. This is
because I had to fade the original clip by using volume curves and then fade in the new clip while
lowering the sound bed. This process took me quite a while to do as it took multiple times to make
sure all the clips were in time and also make sure the volume levels matched as the vox pops were
a lot louder than our clips from the recording studio. My main concern was making sure the news
bulletin played fluently and was on a similar volume level throughout. Because this was my main
worry I was pleased when after spending a few hours editing it I thought it was consistent.
Here is a screenshot of me using four different
tracks which all have quite drastic volume
changes due how the clips have been
recorded. It is also an example of layering
different tracks. This was the draft news
bulletin before I insert volume curves to make it
flow more smoothly.
Improvements for my
product
Even though I spent a majority of my time
editing the news bulletin I still regret
spending more time on it as I feel it could
have sounded more professional. I believe
it may have been best to re-record our
outside broadcast as the quality from the
dictaphone was bad. However, we could
not get another interview, which means we
should have tried to edit our interview
better so that you could not hear the wind
or cut out parts of our broadcast in which
you can not hear a question or reply. If we
had done this I think our outside broadcast
would have sounded more professional as
it would have been more organized and
have a clear recording.
Limitations to our
creativity
Once we had picked our headlines we
began to choose which we wanted vox
pops for and which one we wanted for
an outside broadcast for. Originally I
thought we could interview someone
official related to the coca cola truck
and tell us their view on why they
chose to include Grimsby in the event
and what they thought of the local area.
Sadly, we when started this project the
truck had just left and we could not
come into contact with anyone from the
company. Therefore we used the
headline based on stagecoach as a
back up outside broadcast as we could
find someone reliable and official to
interview.
Overcoming problems in the preliminary task
Most of the problems I faced were related to the main task as it
required more, however, I did experience some during my
preliminary task. The biggest problem we encountered was based
around our jingle and finding copyright free music sources. Due to
our specific target audience we wanted our jingle to include music
relating to the 50/60’s. Sadly, when it came to finding copyright free
sources we struggled to find something we all agreed on. Therefore,
when it came to editing all of our clips together for the jingle we were
unhappy with the final outcome as we believe we it didn’t suit our
target audience as much as we possible could have. We spent more
time on editing the jingle then we would have liked to which caused
us to fall slightly behind although we did catch up with our lesson
aims in the end.
Comparing
These are two screenshots of the work I have editing for my preliminary jingle and my main task news
bulletin. As you can see from the time gap between both projects I have learnt to use more than two
different tracks for my work. Although it is not shown on the second picture I have learnt how to turn down
volume levels for each track which as you can see I did not do for my preliminary task which is why over
radio station introduction is too loud for our audience and talks over our music too much. My editing skills
in the preliminary task are extremely basic and simple whereas when I edited for part for the main task I
was able to use new tools I had learnt to use such as volume levels, volume curves and being able to
create fades using a multi-track. I was more confident with my main project as I was more confident with
using audition and was able to create better work due to this.
Main task
Preliminary task
My overall achievement and regrets on my projects
Achievements:
● Since the beginning of the this project I think my main
improvement was learning how to use audition and I
have done which has meant my editing has made me
for confident in my work and I have challenge myself
further when think of idea’s.
● I was also extremely happy with the outcome of our
vox pops as they sounded professional and clear even
though they were recording by a dictaphone. This
made them blend well with the quality of the recording
studio clips from the presenters.
● When in the recording studio we used pro tools
express which I did not know how to use but as a few
minutes figuring it out I was confident with the
software. Because of this we was able to quickly
record what we needed and saved time by doing this.
We had also left large gaps in between each recording
so that when we came to edit it on audition we knew
where to edit the clip. This once again saved us a lot of
time when editing.
Regrets/bad element:
● We had to recreate our jingle a few times as it did not
compliment our new bulletin presenter styles. Our final
jingle was slightly rushed and I think it may be seen as
slightly boring and it will not catch your attention
enough to realise that their is a change in program.
Because of this I wish I had spent more time on the
jingle until we were all 100% happy with it.
● I wish we had re-recorded our outside interview as it
did not sound professional and the quality was
extremely bad. We should have also spent more time
editing the outside broadcast to make sure there was
not any dead silences and the interviewee could be
heard clearly when he responds.
● For our ident I wish we had create a quick clip of
music to go with the speech as I believe it would
catch the listeners attention more and stand out.
This would cause them to take notice more of the
advertisments.

  • 7. Assessing my technical skills Although my main struggle was using Audition I believe because of this I learnt the most from it. I am proud of the sections in the new bulletins when I had to change the clip to a voxpop. This is because I had to fade the original clip by using volume curves and then fade in the new clip while lowering the sound bed. This process took me quite a while to do as it took multiple times to make sure all the clips were in time and also make sure the volume levels matched as the vox pops were a lot louder than our clips from the recording studio. My main concern was making sure the news bulletin played fluently and was on a similar volume level throughout. Because this was my main worry I was pleased when after spending a few hours editing it I thought it was consistent. Here is a screenshot of me using four different tracks which all have quite drastic volume changes due how the clips have been recorded. It is also an example of layering different tracks. This was the draft news bulletin before I insert volume curves to make it flow more smoothly.
  • 8. Improvements for my product Even though I spent a majority of my time editing the news bulletin I still regret spending more time on it as I feel it could have sounded more professional. I believe it may have been best to re-record our outside broadcast as the quality from the dictaphone was bad. However, we could not get another interview, which means we should have tried to edit our interview better so that you could not hear the wind or cut out parts of our broadcast in which you can not hear a question or reply. If we had done this I think our outside broadcast would have sounded more professional as it would have been more organized and have a clear recording. Limitations to our creativity Once we had picked our headlines we began to choose which we wanted vox pops for and which one we wanted for an outside broadcast for. Originally I thought we could interview someone official related to the coca cola truck and tell us their view on why they chose to include Grimsby in the event and what they thought of the local area. Sadly, we when started this project the truck had just left and we could not come into contact with anyone from the company. Therefore we used the headline based on stagecoach as a back up outside broadcast as we could find someone reliable and official to interview.
  • 9. Overcoming problems in the preliminary task Most of the problems I faced were related to the main task as it required more, however, I did experience some during my preliminary task. The biggest problem we encountered was based around our jingle and finding copyright free music sources. Due to our specific target audience we wanted our jingle to include music relating to the 50/60’s. Sadly, when it came to finding copyright free sources we struggled to find something we all agreed on. Therefore, when it came to editing all of our clips together for the jingle we were unhappy with the final outcome as we believe we it didn’t suit our target audience as much as we possible could have. We spent more time on editing the jingle then we would have liked to which caused us to fall slightly behind although we did catch up with our lesson aims in the end.
  • 10. Comparing These are two screenshots of the work I have editing for my preliminary jingle and my main task news bulletin. As you can see from the time gap between both projects I have learnt to use more than two different tracks for my work. Although it is not shown on the second picture I have learnt how to turn down volume levels for each track which as you can see I did not do for my preliminary task which is why over radio station introduction is too loud for our audience and talks over our music too much. My editing skills in the preliminary task are extremely basic and simple whereas when I edited for part for the main task I was able to use new tools I had learnt to use such as volume levels, volume curves and being able to create fades using a multi-track. I was more confident with my main project as I was more confident with using audition and was able to create better work due to this. Main task Preliminary task
  • 11. My overall achievement and regrets on my projects Achievements: ● Since the beginning of the this project I think my main improvement was learning how to use audition and I have done which has meant my editing has made me for confident in my work and I have challenge myself further when think of idea’s. ● I was also extremely happy with the outcome of our vox pops as they sounded professional and clear even though they were recording by a dictaphone. This made them blend well with the quality of the recording studio clips from the presenters. ● When in the recording studio we used pro tools express which I did not know how to use but as a few minutes figuring it out I was confident with the software. Because of this we was able to quickly record what we needed and saved time by doing this. We had also left large gaps in between each recording so that when we came to edit it on audition we knew where to edit the clip. This once again saved us a lot of time when editing. Regrets/bad element: ● We had to recreate our jingle a few times as it did not compliment our new bulletin presenter styles. Our final jingle was slightly rushed and I think it may be seen as slightly boring and it will not catch your attention enough to realise that their is a change in program. Because of this I wish I had spent more time on the jingle until we were all 100% happy with it. ● I wish we had re-recorded our outside interview as it did not sound professional and the quality was extremely bad. We should have also spent more time editing the outside broadcast to make sure there was not any dead silences and the interviewee could be heard clearly when he responds. ● For our ident I wish we had create a quick clip of music to go with the speech as I believe it would catch the listeners attention more and stand out. This would cause them to take notice more of the advertisments.
