Work Experience
Tesco Express Deputy Manager 2012 – present
As an Express Deputy Manager I am responsible for leading a team of around 25 people
including 3 team leaders. I work alongside the Store Manager in supporting all aspects of the
stores steering wheel and putting together business cases to enable the store to deliver KPI
targets, audit compliance, consistent store standards and ensuring staff scheduling is kept at a
premium. My accountability as the stores Deputy Manager is to oversee all aspects of the cash
and banking processes, this requires keen attention to detail as it is my responsibility to review
the processes carried out day to day and to problem solve any errors that can occur. To make
this accountability easier, I ensure all members of the management team have the capability to
understand the processes required to ensure what the store is banking is accurate and that they
have the confidence to rectify any errors immediately. I have worked in a number of stores of
different geographies, I was signed off as a Deputy Manager in 2012 in a high profile store
where I remained for 2 years, a sense of urgency is a must and I always thrived on the fast paced
environment that came with working in a store that could turnover £320,000+ per week.
More recently I was fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to assist in opening a brand
new store which was previously subject to an arson attack, during the rebuild this involved
overseeing numerous aspects of the development including liaising with suppliers, ensuring
compliances were in place prior to store opening, coaching a new management team to
demonstrate what is expected as well as liaising with staff members about what was happening
throughout the store rebuild and ensuring adequate staff schedules were in place in time for the
stores opening date. I am currently on the development programme for Store Manager, this has
given me the confidence to push myself further, hone my existing skills and most importantly,
develop new skills.
2. Tesco Superstore / Tesco Express Team Leader / Duty Manager 2009 – 2012
Due to the lack of career progression routes within the design industry I decided to move back
into retail. Having built up a solid reputation within the 5 years I had worked there before, I was
soon put forward for the Tesco development programme. Shortly into this I was approached by
a Store Manager from an Express format store and offered a Team Leader position.
As the Team Leader / Duty Manager I am responsible for the day to day running of a store which
turns over approximately £65,000 - £70,000 a week plus almost £140,000 a week in fuel sales. It
is a high pressure role and one that I thrive on. Daily duties include delivering KPI’s including
sales, unknown loss, waste and payroll budgets. I am competent in all areas from stock control,
price integrity, cash management, to ensuring the store is running safe and legal which includes
carrying out regular audits on all areas of store operations including health and safety, food
safety, safe and legal and personnel. I would also take responsibility of staff holidays and rota
management to ensure we always have people where and when we need them. My main
accountability within my job role is training which is something I take a lot of pride in ensuring
staff are fully up to date on all training and legal refreshers. Attention to detail is imperative, I
have always put a lot of care and attention into how the store is presented as this is one of the
key focusses many customers undergo when visiting the store and often determines whether or
not they will shop with us again.
Lemon Zest Creative Ltd Graphic Designer 2007 – 2009
During my time at Lemon Zest Creative Ltd, I have produced artwork for Stockport Metropolitan
Borough Council, Wigan Metropolitan Borough Council, Manchester Mental Health and the
North West Improvement and Efficiency Partnership amongst others. As well as the design
aspect of the job I was also responsible for handling client quotations and carrying out follow up
calls to gain feedback on the prices quoted, processing confirmation orders, purchase orders
and delivery notes. I would also negotiate quotations from suppliers to ensure that we got the
best price possible which could then be passed onto the client.
Working at Lemon Zest Creative has also given me the opportunity to expand on my skills both
as a Designer and a dedicated team player. The role has also taught me the interpersonal skills
required when dealing directly with clients and suppliers. Building a strong rapport and working
1 on 1 with clients was extremely important to me and throughout my experience has taught
me to keep in close contact with them to ensure that their requirements were always met. This
often entailed liaising with the client during the initial concepts stage through to the completion
of the finished artwork. Due to my positive work ethic I have built solid relationships with all of
the clients that I have worked with. In addition to working with clients, I also worked very closely
with the other members of the team thus enabling me to develop good communication and
team working skills, which ultimately ensured client satisfaction at the end of a brief.
The Marlin Group Graphic Designer 2006 – 2006
During my three years at University I was required to complete a 4 week work placement.
Having soon settled in I was dealing with briefs such as website graphics, catalogues and
3. packaging designs for some of the company’s main clients. I built strong relationships with both
the Creative Director and the owner of the business. I was given a small client base and was
responsible for liaising with them on a daily basis as well as been a first point of contact.
The placement was originally planned to take place over a four week period, however due to my
enthusiasm for the role and my ability to work well with others, I was asked if I would consider
working for the company throughout the summer period. I took this opportunity and felt that
the skills I had learned gave me a real insight as to what would be expected of me once I had
completed my degree.
Tesco PLC Customer Assistant 2002 – 2007
Upon leaving school I began working at Tesco. This was a part time Customer Assistant role and
involved duties such as shelf filling, dealing with customers, taking care of deliveries and
working on checkouts. I used this job to fund my College and University fees. During my five
years there, I was recommended by the Personnel Manager and Store Manager to become fully
trained as a Section Manager due to my competence, punctuality and overall commitment to
the job. I soon built strong relationships with the other members of the team and the
customers. I was often praised for my high motivational skills and was approached by section
managers whenever they had any work related issues. As such, these skills were recognised and
I was subsequently given extra responsibility such as training new starters.
