Production Process Evaluation
Research
One strength of my research is that I did it quite thoroughly for all of my chosen
magazines, I picked up in depth and detail little pieces out of all of them to
implement into my own magazine. My research helped my do this as I looked at a
lot of other similar magazine covers and took little snippets into my head of them
and decided to borrow some ideas such as where to place the masthead or how
big the centre image needs to be, this helped in the production of my magazine as
if I did it all alone I would have got stuck and being unsure about if it looked
professional enough.
Another strength of my research is how I looked at a few different magazine
concepts to give me an idea of the variation between brands of fashion magazines
such as vogue and GQ etc. This gave me a deeper understanding of what makes
certain magazines stand out and what changes them from the crowd.
A weakness of my researching would have been not looking at enough variation
between magazine brands as I did for quite a few but the genre was still very
similar whereas it would have benefited me further in my production if I had
looked at a more broad category of magazines compared to just fashion ones. If I
had done this my final product may have had more different features to it instead
of a generic fashion magazine.
Planning
• My planning helped greatly because I already had everything sorted in my head
what I needed to do, this was a big advantage because I was ahead of schedule
with all what I need to plan out meaning I had more time for the production of my
final piece. Specifically my planning helped primarily with what type of magazine
genre I would like to do and how I would put it together.
• Another strength of my planning was the contingencies I planned for, if I did not
plan for them then I would have had trouble doing certain things in my project
such as the layout size. I originally had a layout size set and then it turned out as I
neared finishing that the size was too small, luckily I had a backup layout size in
case of this happening due to me planning it in the contingency part.
• One more thing which was a great help to my finishing product was the mock-up
planning I did for both the cover and the double page spread. The mock-up gave
me a general idea of what I would like to design and place on the magazine, with
this information and help I gathered a good understanding and general idea of
what I wanted my front cover and double page spread to look like.
• A weakness of my planning was having a very limited colour palette to work with,
in the end I decided to move away from my originally planned colours which were
more autumn looking compared to the cold winter vibe I decided to go with in the
end. To improve my final project I could have added a lot more ideas onto my
planning slides like fonts and colours to give me a broader range of ideas rather
than just settling with just one. This would have had a positive effect on my final
product because there would have been more choice for me to work with and
overall I would have chosen more corresponding colours which complimented
each other compared to just one general solid colour.
Time Management
• I feel as though I managed my time efficiently due to a few factors one of
those being my planning helping me thoroughly, with such things as the
layout plan and contingency planning.
• I did complete my project on time but I certainly believe that with more
time my final product could have improved a lot due to the fact I was a bit
short on time at the end but I still managed to finish.
• If I had more time on the project I would have made a few changes and
one of those changes would have been to make my cover more
aesthetically pleasing to look at. Some of the colours I included on the
cover clash with the background, due to it snowing when I took the
pictures the colours clashed and it made the font and text harder to see, I
would have improved this by adding different fonts and colours and also
trying to tone down the background colour as it overpowered a lot of the
cover with the piercing white.
Technical Qualities
Similar mast head
No barcode
Similar font style
Different shots for main image
Quite similar main image style, one page to itself
Same columned writing
Both has a title over the main image, referring to the model
Both include solid
background colour
Aesthetic Qualities
I believe my final products looked great due to the diversity of the front cover being
in the snow as well as featuring some quite luxurious shoes which attract attention.
My work was creative because of the lengths I went to try and make it look as
professional as possible as well as diverse. I tried to accomplish this by using a
professional looking font as the masthead over my main centre image. I would most likely
want to improve the quality of the main cover photo due to the fact it was taken on an
iPhone in winter so the quality was sacrificed, I feel as though this would heavily increase the
aesthetic quality of my final product. I would improve this matter by booking out a camera
from college which has great quality that would not be sacrificed by the conditions.
Audience Appeal
Clean design for aesthetic
qualities
Columned text
Contrasting weather
Famous logos
Outfit labelling
My product heavily appeals to my target audience because of some features I included
in my magazine, one of these ideas I thought particularly applied to my target audience
was choosing a professional looking font like the one used on VOGUE magazine as this gets
a lot of attention, especially on the genre of streetwear. The most specific thing featured in
my magazine which appeals to my audience is the shoes featured which I am wearing and
what appear on the plug. This helped my product appeal to my target demographic because I created a streetwear fashion
magazine featuring an English dress sense followed by quite sought after shoes giving the cover of my magazine aesthetic
qualities and a good look for my audience. My questionnaire helped me appeal to my target audience because I decided to
add a lot of features which were mentioned by people who answered my survey such as; An aesthetic backdrop, for this I
took a photo in February when it was snowing quite heavily which contrasted with the blue I was wearing. I also chose to
wear all blue because of the subtle connotations it gives off such as; winter, low temperatures and ice. Another way I appeal
to my target audience is through my double page spread. On my double page I found an image of A$AP where he was
wearing easily distinguishable clothing which I could analyse and find online, from here I added the prices and names from
the items he is wearing to let the audience know due to this being their main interest and reason for purchasing the
magazine.
Peer
Feedback
Feedback 1
• What did you like about the product?
– The centre image and the presentation of it as
well as its quality.
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
– Easier to read sub-headings as colours clash
Feedback 2
• What did you like about the product?
– The double page layout, as it included both a styled
photo which appealed to the magazine as well as a
large about section with in depth information,
including the clothing brands and prices.
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
– The product could have been improved by adding
more colour and images to the double page layout.
Feedback 3
• What did you like about the product?
– I liked the cover of the magazine as it looked highly
professional and it looks like it had a lot of effort put
into it
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
– I would say the front cover could have more
complementing colours instead of just white and black
but this would have been hard giving the background
colour.
Peer Feedback Summary
• What do you agree with from your peer
feedback?
– I agree with almost all of my peer feedback.
• What do you disagree with from your peer
feedback?
– I do not agree that the double page layout needs
more colour and images as it is already quite
crammed with text and a couple of logos.
Peer Feedback Summary
I would take a few pieces of my peer feedback into consideration before changing my
final product idea to suit them but I do think there were some great ideas which would
be very fitting in my magazine and help boost the appeal to my target audience. One
main change to my final product would be changing the sub-heading font colours, I
would choose this because I agree with the statement one of the reviewing peers made.
They spoke on how it was quite difficult to read due to the colours contrasting too much,
if I were to make some changes to my product it would be this mainly due to the fact the
colours don’t correspond making the whole image look a bit unprofessional.
Another change I would make based on my peer feedback would be adding more
corresponding colours on my main image but as the reviewee said; it would be quite
difficult considering my centre image and the colours based off of that. If I were to
change this though I would add some darker colours into my palette and make my image
have a more solid background because this would make it easier to add different
coloured text without it fading into the background.

Research One strength of my research is that I did it quite thoroughly for all of my chosen magazines, I picked up in depth and detail little pieces out of all of them to implement into my own magazine. My research helped my do this as I looked at a lot of other similar magazine covers and took little snippets into my head of them and decided to borrow some ideas such as where to place the masthead or how big the centre image needs to be, this helped in the production of my magazine as if I did it all alone I would have got stuck and being unsure about if it looked professional enough. Another strength of my research is how I looked at a few different magazine concepts to give me an idea of the variation between brands of fashion magazines such as vogue and GQ etc. This gave me a deeper understanding of what makes certain magazines stand out and what changes them from the crowd. A weakness of my researching would have been not looking at enough variation between magazine brands as I did for quite a few but the genre was still very similar whereas it would have benefited me further in my production if I had looked at a more broad category of magazines compared to just fashion ones. If I had done this my final product may have had more different features to it instead of a generic fashion magazine.
  • 4. Planning • My planning helped greatly because I already had everything sorted in my head what I needed to do, this was a big advantage because I was ahead of schedule with all what I need to plan out meaning I had more time for the production of my final piece. Specifically my planning helped primarily with what type of magazine genre I would like to do and how I would put it together. • Another strength of my planning was the contingencies I planned for, if I did not plan for them then I would have had trouble doing certain things in my project such as the layout size. I originally had a layout size set and then it turned out as I neared finishing that the size was too small, luckily I had a backup layout size in case of this happening due to me planning it in the contingency part. • One more thing which was a great help to my finishing product was the mock-up planning I did for both the cover and the double page spread. The mock-up gave me a general idea of what I would like to design and place on the magazine, with this information and help I gathered a good understanding and general idea of what I wanted my front cover and double page spread to look like. • A weakness of my planning was having a very limited colour palette to work with, in the end I decided to move away from my originally planned colours which were more autumn looking compared to the cold winter vibe I decided to go with in the end. To improve my final project I could have added a lot more ideas onto my planning slides like fonts and colours to give me a broader range of ideas rather than just settling with just one. This would have had a positive effect on my final product because there would have been more choice for me to work with and overall I would have chosen more corresponding colours which complimented each other compared to just one general solid colour.
  • 5. Time Management • I feel as though I managed my time efficiently due to a few factors one of those being my planning helping me thoroughly, with such things as the layout plan and contingency planning. • I did complete my project on time but I certainly believe that with more time my final product could have improved a lot due to the fact I was a bit short on time at the end but I still managed to finish. • If I had more time on the project I would have made a few changes and one of those changes would have been to make my cover more aesthetically pleasing to look at. Some of the colours I included on the cover clash with the background, due to it snowing when I took the pictures the colours clashed and it made the font and text harder to see, I would have improved this by adding different fonts and colours and also trying to tone down the background colour as it overpowered a lot of the cover with the piercing white.
  • 6. Technical Qualities Similar mast head No barcode Similar font style Different shots for main image Quite similar main image style, one page to itself Same columned writing Both has a title over the main image, referring to the model Both include solid background colour
  • 7. Aesthetic Qualities I believe my final products looked great due to the diversity of the front cover being in the snow as well as featuring some quite luxurious shoes which attract attention. My work was creative because of the lengths I went to try and make it look as professional as possible as well as diverse. I tried to accomplish this by using a professional looking font as the masthead over my main centre image. I would most likely want to improve the quality of the main cover photo due to the fact it was taken on an iPhone in winter so the quality was sacrificed, I feel as though this would heavily increase the aesthetic quality of my final product. I would improve this matter by booking out a camera from college which has great quality that would not be sacrificed by the conditions.
  • 8. Audience Appeal Clean design for aesthetic qualities Columned text Contrasting weather Famous logos Outfit labelling My product heavily appeals to my target audience because of some features I included in my magazine, one of these ideas I thought particularly applied to my target audience was choosing a professional looking font like the one used on VOGUE magazine as this gets a lot of attention, especially on the genre of streetwear. The most specific thing featured in my magazine which appeals to my audience is the shoes featured which I am wearing and what appear on the plug. This helped my product appeal to my target demographic because I created a streetwear fashion magazine featuring an English dress sense followed by quite sought after shoes giving the cover of my magazine aesthetic qualities and a good look for my audience. My questionnaire helped me appeal to my target audience because I decided to add a lot of features which were mentioned by people who answered my survey such as; An aesthetic backdrop, for this I took a photo in February when it was snowing quite heavily which contrasted with the blue I was wearing. I also chose to wear all blue because of the subtle connotations it gives off such as; winter, low temperatures and ice. Another way I appeal to my target audience is through my double page spread. On my double page I found an image of A$AP where he was wearing easily distinguishable clothing which I could analyse and find online, from here I added the prices and names from the items he is wearing to let the audience know due to this being their main interest and reason for purchasing the magazine.
  • 10. Feedback 1 • What did you like about the product? – The centre image and the presentation of it as well as its quality. • What improvements could have been made to the product? – Easier to read sub-headings as colours clash
  • 11. Feedback 2 • What did you like about the product? – The double page layout, as it included both a styled photo which appealed to the magazine as well as a large about section with in depth information, including the clothing brands and prices. • What improvements could have been made to the product? – The product could have been improved by adding more colour and images to the double page layout.
  • 12. Feedback 3 • What did you like about the product? – I liked the cover of the magazine as it looked highly professional and it looks like it had a lot of effort put into it • What improvements could have been made to the product? – I would say the front cover could have more complementing colours instead of just white and black but this would have been hard giving the background colour.
  • 13. Peer Feedback Summary • What do you agree with from your peer feedback? – I agree with almost all of my peer feedback. • What do you disagree with from your peer feedback? – I do not agree that the double page layout needs more colour and images as it is already quite crammed with text and a couple of logos.
  • 14. Peer Feedback Summary I would take a few pieces of my peer feedback into consideration before changing my final product idea to suit them but I do think there were some great ideas which would be very fitting in my magazine and help boost the appeal to my target audience. One main change to my final product would be changing the sub-heading font colours, I would choose this because I agree with the statement one of the reviewing peers made. They spoke on how it was quite difficult to read due to the colours contrasting too much, if I were to make some changes to my product it would be this mainly due to the fact the colours don’t correspond making the whole image look a bit unprofessional. Another change I would make based on my peer feedback would be adding more corresponding colours on my main image but as the reviewee said; it would be quite difficult considering my centre image and the colours based off of that. If I were to change this though I would add some darker colours into my palette and make my image have a more solid background because this would make it easier to add different coloured text without it fading into the background.
