Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202
The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

3. Research
One of my main strengths when researching was analysing and picking apart different magazines.
With each magazine I feel like I went into a lot of detail talking about the colour schemes and how
they work with that specific genre of the magazine and how they reflect its theme. I also analysed
the fonts and how they have used bolder and bigger texts to help titles stand out and less in your
face fonts for the less important pieces of text. As well as the different fonts they have used to
make the titles stand out I have also taken notes on what sort of colours they have used to help it
stand and not disappear into the background.
Analysing this helped me massively as it gave me ideas as to what colour works with what
pictures. For example 'the 90's are back' page, I found a font that gives of a 90's vibe, stands out
making it easy to read and used colours from the picture behind to make sure it doesn’t clash.
Looking through all of the magazine covers also helped me to work out what sort of layout works
best for me. It helped me make the decision to make the model central of the front cover and write
around her.
A weakness I have found is the variety of what I have researched. I feel like I should have
researched more, such as articles. I struggled a lot making my article so I feel like if I had read a
few more it would have been a lot easier for me to write mine and would have given more ideas
how to lengthen it out and make it more interesting to read. Another weakness of my evaluation is
probably the amount I actually researched. Even tho I got a clear image as to what works and
what doesn’t I feel like I could have explored more and got a better idea as to what looks better
and is more visually pleasing.
4. Planning
One of my main strengths when planning my magazine was the layouts and
designs of the pages. I feel like I went into great detail on what colour scheme,
fonts and positioning I wanted. I also went into detail on why I chose the
specific fonts and colours and why they would work with that specific area of
my magazine. When reflecting on my planning and looking at the end product I
feel that the comparison between the two are very similar.
Planning my magazine in great detail enabled me to complete the product
quickly, efficiently and to the standard that I needed – encoperating all aspects
that were required.
I feel that the weaknesses I had in the planning of this magazine were not
experimenting with different layouts before finalising a page and that I should
have planned exactly what I was going to write in certain articles.
The effect of more productive planning would be that the article would be more
interesting and easier to read.
5. Time Management
In terms of time management, I feel like at times I struggled to get work done for that specific
deadline. At the start I managed to get most of my work done on time but as we went into a
lockdown and werent at college I started to get behind because I didn’t have the same
motivation I would have had at college.
When it came to the production and making sure I had all the photos, this is when everthing
slowed down because it was hard to get all my models and take their photos in different
locations. In total it took me over two weeks to get all the photos which set me back and then got
me behind on writing up articles and interviews which I struggled to get done.
If I was given more time I would have improved the detail to my magazine such as the amount I
have written up for my interview and article, because I think I have been really brief with what I
have spoken about. I would have also taken more time looking into outfits and getting the style I
wanted more specific instead of rushing and just using the models own clothes.
6. Technical Qualities
Both have big
titles using a
bold font at the
top of the page
The pictures have
both been taken in
cities giving it that
proper urban effect
Barcodes have been
placed in different
positions
Positioning and
sizing of text is
completely
different My magazine is in colour
and the existing product is
in black and white
Existing Product
My Product
7. Technical Qualities My Product
Existing Product
They both have one page
dedicated to a picture of
the model, however mine
has been taken outside and
the existing product has
been taken in a studio
In terms of writing
there is about the
same amount in a
very similar layout
Both titles and sub
headings are also very
similar and are placed in
nearly the exact same
position. Both pages with
writing on have a
plain white
background making it
easy to read
8. Technical Qualities
Existing Product My Product
They both have
white backgrounds
so it doesn’t look
too busy
All the contents is listed
down the side of the page
The title glamour goes all
the way across the top of
the existing product but
my title only goes half
way across
My pictures are in colour
however the picture
from the existing
product is in black and
white
9. Aesthetic Qualities
I feel that the strongest and most aesthetically pleasing part of the magazine are my
photographs. I believe that I have caught the mood of the picture with the colour and
backdrop used. This is evident in the 90's double page spread where I paid particular
attention to the correct clothing style and models look.
Even though I felt that I chose the fonts well to match to theme of that page I could
possibly have improved the font type on the front cover for the names of the people
that feature in it to make them stand out a bit more.
10. Audience Appeal
I would consider my target audience to be 15 – 25 year olds – a younger
gerneration with an interest in present day fashion. I have appealed to them by
dressing the models in fashionable, colourful and affordable clothes. I have also
tried not to make the article too wordy or busy as a younger audience tend not to sit
and read long articles.
11. Aesthetic Qualities/ Audience Appeal
Bold title, easy
to read
Competiton with pink
background to make it
stand out. This appeals
to the audience because
it is targeted at young
fashionable people and
the price would be very
benefitial to them
The barcode is in the
corner so it doesn’t out
power the front cover
Colours of font fit
in with the colour
of her clothes
and the building
behind her
12. Aesthetic Qualities/ Audience Appeal
The font I have used has
a slight graffiti look to it,
which fits in with the
photos I have used
I have used a dark blue
background with white
writing to make the
writing easy to read
I have added pictures to
split apart the writing, so
it is not to overwhelming
13. Aesthetic Qualities/ Audience Appeal
I have used
a brush sort
of font to try
and reflect
the 90's
theme that
is going on
in the
double
page
spread
To make the
page less
overwhelming
and busy, I
have spaced
out all of the
writing.
Especially as it
is aimed at a
younger
audience I feel
like this would
be a lot more
appealing to
The colour scheme I have used is quite bright and
colourful to fit with the 90's theme, so I have used
calmer colours on the right hand page to split it up a bit
14. Aesthetic Qualities/ Audience Appeal
Bold title to
make the
models
name stand
out
Purple
subheading
made using
the colour
picker tool to
fit in with the
colour scheme
Bright costume to make the model stand out
from her background. I feel like the style of
clothes she is wearing will appeal to the
audience as its quite funky and on trend
Instead of having all my photos in a
rectangular or square shape, I
thought I'd change it up by putting
one of my pictures in a circle
16. Feedback 1

Keiran Johnson
19. Peer Feedback Summary
• What do you agree with from your peer feedback?
• Personally I agree with most of the feedback given especially
the feedback about my strongest area been the photography
and the editing of the photos to bring the colours out.
• What do you disagree with from your peer feedback?
• I slightly agree that I needed to go into more detail in my
article but at the same time I didn’t want it to be too
overpowering and boring to read, so that’s why I kept it short.
20. Peer Feedback Summary
If I could make improvements off my peer feedback, one thing I'd
definitely do is add more pictures that I have taken to make it more
aesthetically pleasing on the eye. Another thing I would have done
is researched more into the different subjects so that I could add
more detail to my article.
