3. Research
• A strength of my research is that I researched a diverse amount of music
magazines within the alternative genre to give me as many ideas as
possible. I looked at mainstream magazines such as Kerrang and
Rocksound.
• Another strength is that it provided as a guideline for my product, as I was
able to see what is popular in the market and what ideas are overdone
and unoriginal. I noticed that most magazines use a wide amount of
colours so I decided to make my product very limited in its colour scheme.
• A weakness of my research is that I couldn’t find existing magazines that
fit the ideas I had for my product. To improve, I could have changed my
initial ideas that mimic pre-existing styles of magazines. This would have
had a large effect on my product as it would have changed the entire
design and aesthetic.
4. Planning
• A strength of my planning is that it helped me stay on track with my
production as it allowed me to focus on relevant things and manage my
time better. Planning well helped with time management and making the
production process go smoothly.
• A weakness of my planning is that I stayed in my comfort zone and created
a product that didn’t really make me experiment or create anything
different to other products I have created. To improve, I would have
created a product that’s a lot different to what I would normally produce,
allowing me to experiment with different styles and colours.
5. Time Management
• I think I managed my time well, as I finished all of my production work on
time. If I was given more time to produce my work I would have written a
longer, more detailed article and possibly create a second double page
spread for the product.
6. Technical Qualities
Existing productMy work
Both products feature the main image
of the spread being the background,
and having the article’s body located in
the negative space of the photo.
Both products also use different
coloured text to accent and highlight
parts of the article. The same is used
with font sizing.
A difference is that in my work the article is
entirely located on one side of the spread,
whereas on the existing product the text is
spread out across the two pages.
7. Technical Qualities
My work Existing product
A similarity is that my work and the existing
product have very limited colour schemes,
being mainly black/monochromatic with
colours like red used as an accent.
A difference is that the text in the existing
product is much more out of focus, placing
the focus on the man on the cover, whereas in
my product the focus is both on the text and
the man in the photo as both are in the
centre.
8. Aesthetic Qualities
I think my product looks good and I think it was
creative as it differs from mainstream styles of
magazine covers and spreads. I like the limited
colour scheme of my product, as it makes the
bright colours really stand out
I also like the fonts I used in my
product, as I think they all work very
well together and the fonts I chose for
my titles and headers fit their roles
and are visually appealing.
To improve, I would
have changed the
typography on the
right side of the
spread to make it
more dynamic and
interesting to look at.
9. Audience Appeal
I have appealed to my target audience by featuring
musicians that would appeal to them. On the cover of
the magazine it displays names of featured artists, which
will draw in audience attention and if they see a
musician they like, they will be more inclined to read
more and purchase the product.
I have also appealed to my audience by
making the aesthetics and design of the
product reflect the musicians featured,
using dark colours that mimic the dark
tones in the music.
11. Feedback 1
• What did you like about the product?
– I like the minimal colours and how the bright
colours stand out
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
– The article could’ve been longer.
12. Feedback 2
• What did you like about the product?
– The designs and aesthetics of the product go well
with the content.
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
– Higher resolution images could have been used
13. Feedback 3
• What did you like about the product?
– The layout of the double page spread is cohesive
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
– The title colour should be changed so it stands out
more. The font could also be changed and
increased in size too.
14. Peer Feedback Summary
• What do you agree with from your peer
feedback?
– I agree that the colour scheme and the aesthetics
of my product are good. I also agree that the
article could have been longer.
• What do you disagree with from your peer
feedback?
– I disagree that the masthead colour should be
changed.
15. Peer Feedback Summary
Based on my peer feedback, I would first find images with a higher resolution. This may
require having to purchase the photos from their hosting websites but it would improve
the quality of my product.
