1. Who would be the audience for our media product?
Whilstthe three of us were conducting ouroriginal research, before the creationof our media
productthat is, we foundthat the type of productthat we wantedto create would have toappeal to
a mainstreamaudience of all differentagesandsex.Having
saidthis,we feltthatour proposedfilmwouldbe more
directedatthe male gender,due tothe frequencyof
violence andjumpscarescommonlyusedincrime thrillers
inwhichmalesoftenrelishmore thanfemales.Thisis
typicallyconventional.
From our targetaudience surveyinwhichwe completed, itallowed uswhen planning, toidentify
whatwe wantedandhowconventional ouropeningwasgoingtobe. The resultsof the survey
showedthat16-25-year-oldare the maintarget audience andthe genderbeingmixed, although
slightlymore orientedtomales (asstatedabove).Havingsaidthis,itdidalso show thatCrime
Thrillers still appealedtootherage groupsto a
lesserextent. Thisoftenwasbecause they
enjoyedexcitingandfastpace filmsas well the
tension andexcitementcreatedthroughout
the film.
We usedthisinformationasaninspiration
whenwe createdouropening.We decided
betweenthe three of use,thatwe wantedto
be unconventionalinsome waysbyhavinga slowerstartof the openingandincreasingthe pace
throughouttohelpwiththe creationof tension.Thispossiblymaymake the audience more likelyto
watch our filmbecause itissomethingdifferenttowhattheytypicallysee. ThiscreatesaUSP.
Our researchalsosuggestedthatour target audience maycome froma range of social classesand
backgrounds. The reasonwhywe thinkthat our product may appeal toa range of people isbecause
theywouldbe able torelate to lotsof the differentcharacteristics withinthe piece, therefore
makingitmore realistic. We alsothinkthatitisrelatable todifferenttypesof people throughthe
range of smallerthemeswhichrunthroughoutourcrime thriller, suchasgoodand evil andrich vs.
poor (binaryopposites).
The demographicsinwhichwe believe the majorityof our targetaudience fitsintoiseithergrade C,
D or E. The mainreasoningasto whywe believe thisisbecause theyare likelytobe either
unemployedorobtainlow paidjob. Thisiscouldbe as a resultof variousreasons andpossiblycould
be more inclined tostayinandwatch films, asopposedtospendingleisuretime withcolleagues,
particularlyif theyhave littlecommitments.
2. In termsof the psychographicsforourtarget audience, we foundthatthe maincharacteristicsof
our audience,wasthat theyenjoyedusingtechnologysuchasgamesconsolesandcomputers,as
well asthemregularlywatchingfilms.We alsofoundthatthe psychographicsforourtarget audience
was thattheywere alsosociable andoutgoing, althoughtheyare alsoprivate aboutcertainpartsof
theirlives. We usedthisinformationtobe able tohave similartraitsinour protagonistwhichwould
therefore make itmore relatable.
Carryingon from this, we establishedthatourtargetaudience fitsinto twocategories. The first
beingthe reformer.The otherpsychographic beingthe explorer.
The main usesandgratificationsthatispresentinourpiece isentertainmentandescapism.One of
the mainways we achievedhavingescapism inourpiece, wasby documentingasense of realism
and portrayinga real life scenariotoouraudience.Thissubsequentlyallowsour audience topossibly
relate tothe film, throughtheirownexperiences. Therefore, itcouldmake itmore personal tothem
and therefore,theymayfeel astrongerconnectionincomparisontootherthrillerfilms,givingour
productiona Unique SellingPoint,dependingonthe individual.
Anotherusesandgratificationinourpiece, ispersonal identity.The wayinwhichwe achievedthis,
wouldbe to use characters withinthe filmwhomare similaragestoour maintargetaudience.
Likewise, thiscouldcreate asomewhat‘invisible’rapportbetweenourcharactersandaudience
members.Therefore thiscouldreinforce thisideaof personal identity,particularlyastheycanrelate
to one another.
